    Too many purists here judging what things sound like through an oscilloscope. Since when do people listen to things with their eyes? Listen with your ears. If you don't like it, spend out on an SH-101 from eBay and it's maintenance costs in years to come. Roland are giving people the sound of their classics in an affordable form. I don't see Korg re-issuing the polysix or Monopoly anytime soon. You have Behringer copying other companies classics (not innovative whatsoever), Korg giving us nothing but volcas and re-issues of... more mono synths, Yamaha with re-face (no comment)... Roland are actually giving people what they want but in newer affordable forms. If you don't like mini keys, connect it to a midi controller. ACB sounds great - it's stable, solid state and within a mix you cannot distinguish what is analogue or not. And how many of the people who listen to your music made with these instruments sit there saying "I don't like this song because it wasn't recorded with an original 101"...

    • @notgonnatakeit1

      i dont judge things based on an oscilloscope. I judge them based on A: Do I like them and B: Do other things do what this does but better for similar money? If it sounds like a virtual analog but does cool stuff or sounds good in ways analog can't: awesome. From this video it's clearly trying to be a simplistic analog. Sorry but a Korg Volca Bass does that better for alot less money, or a Minilogue kills it for slightly more. I can distinguish analog or not in a mix btw... One interesting fact about that though which I have noticed lately, being a mix engineer and all, is once you put enough plugins on an analog synth it does lose some of that magic and it's a little harder to tell analog from not. I do use analog mixing stuff, but just can't all the time, too time consuming.

      One of life's regrets was not picking up an original for the same price this new thing goes for... But I agree with what you're saying here, especially when considering the added feature/functionality factor as well. I have yet to GAS for any of the other boutique series boxes and a couple demos in...

    • @maccagrabme
      @maccagrabme 7 років тому +2

      These boutiques are useful devices, I have a couple and am happy with them for the price but there is a reason that these pretty simple synths and drum machines got so popular and that is because they had a very specific sound.With the Sh101 it has a particular sweet spot and I don't think that Roland quite nailed it here.
      The 101 is very basic and in my opinion is best for basslines but the boutique doesn't seem to quite capture that rubbery lo-fi grainy quality. Its not about whether I can distinguish them in a mix, its whether I can be inspired to make a track in the first place. I can fully understand the younger generation thinking they are great but I grew up in the 80s and was surrounded by that real analogue sound and that's the sound that does it for me, my ears can tell the difference when playing them especially the low end. I still think Roland should go back to analog for the pro market as there are a lot of us willing to spend to get that exact sound we all love.

    • @EnochDark
      @EnochDark 7 років тому

      Yeah, the one I got to play with felt alive and inspired me to keep going for sure but I think a lot of interesting things can come of this modern edition as well. It's kinda like cars, like yeah a late 60's early 70's classic Dodge would be sweet but I wouldn't mind owning one of them new retro looking ones either.

    I have an original SH101 and this is close, but I can't stand the tiny controls on the SH-01a and the fact you have to buy that crappy mini keyboard at extra cost, (£349 for the SH-01a + £79 for the keyboard adapter = £428, I only paid £495 for a vgc original SH101 with flight case!). I also tested the sequencer on it in my local music store and they've changed it in some way, as it doesn't function exactly how the original does, the original you simply hit the record button play the notes in and rests and legato's however you want and then press play and you got an instant pattern, I tried to do this on the SH-01a and it was all over the place, it seemed to change the pattern I programmed somehow.
    I'm not a purist but I'm not 100% convinced this is a replacement I would consider buying instead of the original. Also heard about the buzz you get from plugging the USB into a computer USB bus socket so the audio would have to come from the mini jack socket very annoying as nearly all mixers and audio interfaces have 1/4" sockets, I'm not a real fan of jack plug adapters.

    I knew there'd be loads of haters out for this straight away.
    Look, a real SH101 sounds lovely. But mine is totally f**ked. It's more than 30 years old. The keys are falling off. The pots are crackly. It needs calibrating. The casing is starting to crack. The membrane under the keyboard is starting to wear through and some of the keys don't make proper contact. There's a weird low 60 Hz hum which was just about acceptable 15 years ago and now is intolerable. I had an expert look at it a couple of years ago and he quoted me 'at least' £250 to fix it all.
    This doesn't sound as nice, but it's new, it's got MIDI, and it's polyphonic. By the time I've smeared it in reverb and layered it up in a mix, I reckon it'll be near enough! Part of what you pay for is the convenience rather than the sound.

    • @unemployablegraduate
      @unemployablegraduate 7 років тому +1

      Yes, Roland could probably have made a brand-new all-analogue SH-101. But I suspect that what they want to invest their R&D in is improving these ACB algorithms instead, as to them that represents moving forward rather than looking backward. It's like CGI; it still doesn't convince, but it's loads better than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. In another five years it will be better still. In the meantime, Roland have made this SE-02 thing for people who just have to have real analogue! Also: Roland have probably realised that KORG have the 'cheap real analogue' market sown up, so maybe they're trying to go down a different path.

    • @patrickbateman7444
      @patrickbateman7444 7 років тому +3

      The CGI comparison is absolutely stupid. CGI is great technology for images, that are impossible to achieve otherwise. ACB is the thing that is actually backwards. The SH101 is from 1982, that is 35 years ago, and it sounds a lot better than this pathetic emulation. So where is the progress, bringing the same synth 35 years later, that sounds way worse than the original? 4-voice polyphony? LOL. It is a blatant, disgusting money grab by roland, plain and simple. I'm sure they have huge margins on this boutique crap, it's a flimsy little controller on a cheap DSP sold for a couple hundred bucks. They don't even have to sell much of them, to return a profit.

    • @unemployablegraduate
      @unemployablegraduate 7 років тому

      What I wrote was;
      'as to them that represents moving forward rather than looking backward. '
      The keys words here are 'to them'. They're working with ACB DSP because they're working towards a Holy Grail, which is DSP that has a sonic quality indistinguishable from analogue. Someone like Roger Meyer would say that this is actually theoretically and practically impossible to achieve because analogue waveforms are always changing slightly, and even if you could model this behaviour with wavetables, wavetables will always be stepped even if one were to use a million steps. But Roland want to chase it because it represents a new challenge to them, which analogue doesn't.
      I wasn't saying it was better for us consumers! We're the guinea pigs for their experiment, in a sense.

    • @unemployablegraduate
      @unemployablegraduate 7 років тому

      It's developing technology, in other words. Who knows what it'll sound like in another ten years? I agree that it still has a long way to go. Maybe it's not even achievable.

      @patrickbateman7444 7 років тому

      This "new" one isn't new, it's the same recycled code that Roland used for the Plugout. And it certainly doesn't sound like the original, the filter sweep makes it painfully obvious. yeah, this is getting absurd Roland. So basically you could put any of these VST modeled synths on the system 1 and 1m or 8 but b/c you want to make more money and have less theft via software your creating a ton of tiny synths that only in-experienced or low budget musicians will think of using for about a year and then on to the ebay 2nd hand market.
    Quit making micro-machine synths. I agree ACB is THE SHEET!! Now make the System series worth it's salt and put these VST's out for that and drop this boutique cracker box joke. the SE-02 is actual analog, but the controls are for little people. You want to make some actual analog do that, but these digital flavor boxes are basically for people who don't know how to make the system 1 engine produce the iconic sound of these other synths, and basically you could just have a nice patch set to sell or the plug outs that give people instant access to the desired palette of sound. I'm not buying crap tons of gear. 2 synths and a sampler with efx unit and a drum machine is enough.

      Ubiquitous Reverser You're quite right. Forget about Roland, with just one really fat analog monosynth like the MFB Dominion 1, perhaps a poly, a sampler, maybe a rompler, an analog mixing desk, some FX, some sample CDs and you are ready to rave.

      However if you have a System-1M then you can add Boutique synths to do some extraordinary stuff along with other Plug Outs., possibly justifying price tag of Boutique Synths😎🔥🔥...However System-1 needs some love & have gates to connect up to a 1M like the System 8 gate for System- 1M Connection.

    It's crazy to think that for the same price you can have a Bass Station II or a Minibrute who are real size analog synths with more features. Instead you have a digital toy who sounds like a vst.
    Roland is doing it all wrong lately

    Boards of Canada are known for there use with a real sh101 and I can't imagine this reproducing that fat baseline of roygbiv.

    The SH-01a is a great synth.

    I really wanted this thing to be great, since i always wanted an SH-101. But it isn't, it is an overpriced piece of shit. An SH-101 can (and has obviously) carry a whole track, just with its massive, fascinating presence. This thing might sound somewhat like it, but it lacks all these intangible qualities. The difference in character are massive. This "ACB" is just a marketing term for a very flawed emulation. It is not even close. The Behringer D is close to the Minimoog Model D. This is just a mediocre vst, delivered in an overpriced package.
    Welcome to 2017, where Behringer builds better Synths than Roland.

      The Behringer D is almost an exact replica, the most recent version atleast.

      Nonsense. The SH101 was cheap when it came out for a reason. It's not hard to emulate well. No wonder millennials are making inferior music.

    I'll stick with my vermona mono lancet for that kind of sound.

      No idea how you think that. Unless you never heard a 101

      I owned a 101 and an mc-202. Sold both and kept the vermona. 101 is great for performance, but it has a very 'plastic' mid-range focus sound that while interesting, but was too precise/sharp for me. The 202 was also cool, but I flipped it and made a $500 profit.

      I have owned my 101 since 86' To say this sounds terrible seems just a bit snobbish. and bs to boot. You probably would damn a 101 since at this point not one sound alike

      Amen. Disgusted by Roland. Must be the shittiest company in the music business right now. Who would have ever thought, that Behringer would be a respected Synth Builder, and Roland would be absolute dogshit???

    Very good demo of a very bad product...Its a shame Roland keeps on acting in such a shameless way. This is basically a very very limited VST (super limited vco, only one adsr, not the best modulation options...) inside a very uncomfortable enclosure (I hate the boutique series faders), with an okaysh sound at a very high price.
