    When motorists see cyclists going through red lights it just confirms the general opinion that cyclists ignore traffic laws.
    Though this video is a sky training run they should really obey local traffic laws regardless of how famous you are or where you are.
    TBH it is a fair video of police just doing their job.

      When cyclists read about drivers killing people, it just confirms the general opinion drivers endanger lives and enjoy killing people. Though this video is a sky training run they did a really great job of paying attention to everything around them and kept themselves safe regardless of how famous you are or where you are.
      TBH it is a video of police pulling cyclists over instead of paying attention to cars that are endangering lives.

      What these cop are doing is totally useless. They just make numbers, by filling quotas. If all cyclists would perfectly respect the rules, they would invent or provoke infractions to "prove" they did something to their boss. They tell it themselves : they need signatures.
      And concerning the "confirmation" Tyson is speaking about, that's just confirmation bias, which touches so much idiots, who think they're the justiciaries of the road.

      Yes but Im a little anfry on sa police. They give me 100$ fine for not wearing a safety helmet on a child push scooter. SA has very aggressive helmet laws. Not only cyclists but also adult skaters, inliners and push scooter rider must wear a helmet. They can stop you, even the helmet straps are not correctly fastened.

    Have to say that, even though my instinct as a cyclist is to defend fellow cyclists, the police did well to stop these guys. Turning right over tram lines where there's a no right turn is pretty daft, and a good way to get knocked off by a tram. Yes, you probably should have said something you silly bleep, and why are you following them doing the same thing? These guys are paid professionals who get to ride on closed roads all the time. It's not a huge ask that they adhere to red lights, especially considering that they're so recognisable. Stop at lights, follow the road signs, not difficult.
    Any suggestion that anyone was riding in a way that would endanger anyone is obviously ridiculous though. Yes they should have waited for the red light to change at the pedestrian crossing before going, BUT they did wait for the pedestrians to clear the crossing before moving off at about 1.5kmph. However, you have to wait guys!
    I don't see anything wrong with them filtering through traffic to get ahead of stopped vehicles either. This is every cyclists instinct, and it's the safest thing to do. Getting boxed in by cars and buses is not fun. Not only because of the fumes, but also because you do not want to be moving off in this situation. This is why you see a large marked box for cyclists at traffic lights in many cities.
    The argument that cyclists should stay in the bike lane just doesn't wash. In so many cases, the bike lane is the worst place to be due to parked cars, cars suddenly pulling over, buses stopping etc. I'm not going to sit behind a great big bus which is blocking the bike lane, no way.

    • @WalrusRiderEntertainment
      @WalrusRiderEntertainment  7 років тому +11

      All good points except the first one about being knocked over by trams. My commentary clearly states they are doing tram works. There are no trams running along KW St from Vic Square for a week after this video was taken. They stop at Vic Square. The State Government could have allowed cars and bikes to turn right there while the tram works were in progress. I suspect they didn't because they didn't want cars blocking intersections. Why did I follow them? Because I trusted they were briefed and assumed that maybe they had an exemption for the training week considering the State Government has turned the city into a maze with all these tram works. I have lived here almost 47 years and even I am struggling to find ways around. There are no entry bits everywhere in Adelaide at the moment as they are also putting up infrastructure for the Clipsal 500 motor race which I can tell you makes the road closures for the Tour Down Under look laughable. Every year the Clipsal turns Adelaide into gridlock for about a month or so.. End of the day, A good urban planning solution should facilitate smooth traffic flow. I see they are trialling cyclists being able to proceed on red lights in Paris.. www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33773868 The French are always smarter than most..

      WalrusRider, I see (re: tram closure), well I hope the Sky riders knew that. All in all, much ado about nothing then!

      I have to agree. Any car that is angled to the left like that grey Corolla I tend to look behind and then pass on the right so as not to get pushed into the gutter.. I think I mentioned that point in the commentary.

    • @Paud4n
      @Paud4n 7 років тому +4

      Not to get nationalistic about it :) (well I'm not Dutch just spent most of my life in the Netherlands), but ignoring the light and taking right hand turns has been a thing in the Netherlands a very long time. On top of that many busy intersections have separate lights for bikes and also an area all the way at the front at the light only for bikes (hence less risk of getting boxed in). The Netherlands has great bike-traffic infrastructure and safety mentality. Granted a big part of that is that cycling is one of the main means of transport in cities and car drivers are just very aware of bikes.

    Sorry I'm a cyclist and I agree with the cops on this one. We can't gave it both ways. We need cultural change to end this war on bikes. Im tired of being abused on roads and how people in the ofdice talk about cyclists doing everything wrong. Every driver that sees them running the reds then sprouts the same "they all run red lights all the time crap to everyone they know and this is what breeds the hate and abuse. They were just rolling through the city, what's an extra couple of minutes waiting for a red light. In an ideal world drivers would just relax, slow down and realise the extra time behind us isn't a big deal but then again really we should do the same thing by not running red lights... perceptions of us need to change and it's not going to be the big majority that's makes that happen.

      Anything That's pretty open minded. Most commentors want to "Share the Road" but, at the same time demand the biggest slice. Usually they don't or have never driven a car. So they don't realize that we as cyclists are like gnats to motor vehicles. Buzzing around and almost impossible to see.

      The need for a cultural change is an amazingly honest an insightful comment. I drive more than I ride but I ride regularly and surprisingly I spend a reasonable amount of time walking places. So am I a driver, a cyclist or a pedestrian/walker. Guess what if I am honest too I have made mistakes doing all three of them. Does this make me a bad person or a criminal or even an idiot. I think not I am just human and I make mistakes. The cultural change that is needed is not between cyclists and drivers or pedestrians for that matter. It is simply that we need to all cut each other some slack and be a little more patient. Do not assume the worst of everyone who is doing something different to you at that instance in time. Most of all before you start going off about a person on a bike or a driver doing something stupid remember the time you made a mistake that was probably not that different.
      As for the legal aspects we’ll the law is the law and if you break it you can not complain when you get done. The police handled it fine and yeah they got let off with a warning. I am sure there are plenty of drivers who have been let off with a warning too. So honestly nothing that different there. We are all the same. Just people trying to get on with life the best we can and generally not wanting to adversely effect those around us.

      Have you ridden in Adelaide Anything? The red lights are unbearably long and are generally retarded. The lights are green the other way when no one is there and then turn red as cars approach. There is no way anyone can ride in Adelaide CBD without running a red. Running a red pedestrian signal is new - I thought that was a Grey area.....fanks Team Sky for clearing that one up. But yes to other comments - the SA cops are awesome - and some of them have beards which makes them even more awesome!!!

    Team Sky riders are very polite. I’m from Pasadena California and have ridden many fast group rides over the years. As in a fast group training ride situation if the pack gets a red light we mostly stop, but on some occasions we get caught in the red and run it. So sometimes we get pulled over by the police, at which point it sometimes becomes a shouting match between the police and a rude know it all cyclist in our group. So this shows the professionalism of a pro team being very polite with the police, as compared to amateur riders.

    They broke the law- in Aus cyclists have the same rights and RESPONSIBILITIES as motor vehicles (the exception is you can go onto the footpath at anytime, but this varies state-to-state). I thought this was a fair video of your part. The police didn't charge them or anything- they either lecture or charge. I can't say I always wait at a red light when the crossing is clear but I go onto the footpath if so, meaning I can stop at traffic islands if I need to. I think the police where fair enough to talk to them and I think [particularly] when it's that busy you should be following the law. City riding is shit tbh, I admire and question the sanity of anyone who tries to train by riding on roads in the city. Go someone quieter or on the bike paths (like non-road bike paths), much nicer.

So often when 'cycle safety' comes up- the focus is on cyclists, but we're the vulnerable ones and drivers can be awful. Some driver trying to gain 10 seconds on their journey and not giving us space could cost us our lives. Educate drivers I say.

      It's called victim blaming. Like the "Be Safe, Be Seen" campaign. Blame us for being hit because we aren't lit up like a Christmas Tree during daylight with a fluro vests on. How about "Use your fucken eyes Motorists" campaign? Motorists should always be looking for cyclists. I have a luminous green jersey and cars still "don't see me".

    • @cyclingvideoes
      @cyclingvideoes 7 років тому +5

      Yeah, I was lit up like a Christmas tree when I was struck by a truck. Approaching a red light and I get rear ended. No amount of lights would have saved me though, because the guy decided it was a good idea to look away from the road because his kid dropped something.... Lucky for him I'm wiry and didn't break anything, and sustained only a concussion and whiplash along with a broken bike and his insurance will hurt after this because of him not taking driving a death machine seriously.

    The bicyclists were barely moving, and although the light at the pedestrian crosswalk was red ( At 2:40 ), they were safe. I mean, after all the pedestrians were certainly undeterred by the bikes. By the standards around these parts (Berkeley, California) yes, they technically would have been breaking a rule, but the police would not bother with it. We don't have 'pedestrian' red lights here. We have flashing yellows for certain crosswalks which means proceed with caution.

    In America you all get your ID taken for a Fishing Expeditions, they will tell you you are acting nervous and then ask to search your vehicle (bike), they will place you in handcuffs for their safety, pat you down. They will say you seem intoxicated and ask you if you've been doing drugs or alcohol.. They will at the slightest protest you state of how you are being treated, get their egos hurt and assault you, slamming you to the ground and charge you for resisting an officer. If they do not kill you they will ruin your life with a felony on your record. So be careful riding a bicycle in America.

    Thanks for video and balanced commentary. I have mixed view. If we had a cycling friendly culture, this would have been police overkill as the Sky guys did nothing dangerous - eg waited until all pedestrians had crossed and then proceeded. But, unfortunately, we have a confrontational attitude in Aus society between cyclists and some others. Initiatives like the Amy G “a meter matters’” are real progress - but the flip side is we cyclists need to be squeaky clean. Not sure if the police knew this was a group of international pros (lots of people wear Sky kit), but their approach was pretty balanced... Thanks again for sharing.

    Obey the road rules and keep you safe, I'll give you over a meter when I pass you and I won't care if you filter in front of my car.
    We are all pedestrians, from getting out of the car or off the bike, being hit by a car or a bike still hurts and it's more frustrating when you hear that you're not at fault and the other person is.
    Keep yourselves safe, the cops here in SA want to keep you safe.
    Once again, I'm a driver that appreciates cyclists, one of you that's barely 50cm wide is far better than another SUV on the road, seeing 10 of you is 10 SUV's less for me to deal with.
    It's just the few cyclists that I'm pissed off about, I'm on a priority road (Prospect road) heading down and a cyclist exits a back street and heads through my path into the turning lane on my right is something that scares the shit out of me because... I can kill them, even at a mere 50kph.
    Ride safe, stay alive, go home and get paid... rinse and repeat.
