Having lived abroad, I found London's drivers to be very polite actually. You should see what they drive like in Naples, though I lived in Rome, which was already terrible enough.
London is the worst by far. It beats the impatients taxi drivers in NY, the edgy Parisians and the crazy Romans. It's like when they see a pedestrian crossing they must accelerate. And riding a bike is frankly dangerous in every large world city except in the NL.
The best thing i learned in safely driving for a living in central london in the 90s was to drive defensively. Speed reduction is the key. Always to expect the unexpected. I expect the same philosophy would apply for cyclists too.
This is a very correct comment. There's lots of poor judgement from other road users on show here, but this is also not a good example of cycling per Highway code recommedations
Good video and decent cyclist but I’d seriously consider slowing down after so many near misses. Appreciate no laws are being broken from a speed perspective but you have to account more for other people’s mistakes, which are guaranteed to happen.
Momentum is everything in cycling, and you go slow you get bonked from behind on those london cycling superhighways. They are intense. I think the riders should be forced to switch to Dutch bikes for a more relaxed pace.
As a road user, wether you drive aLorry, Van, Car, Bus or Cyclist. It's down to you to drive with due care and attention In a perfect world everyone would obey all the rules of the road But we live in an imperfect work The best way to avoid crashes and accidents is to assume everyone else on the road has no idea what they are doing. Just because you may have right of way doesn't mean ignore everything around you In bigger cities with congestion expect pedestrians to emerge from nowhere, anticipate a door opening in stationary traffic, or vehicles not indicating, even cyclists weaving in and out of traffic. The amount of times I've seen road users not paying attention to their surroundings because they have right of way, you may have right of way, and the other person is at fault, but you also need to proceed with due care and attention People should follow the rules of the road, but we don't live in paradise. Keep yourself safe by assuming every other road user is incompetent
This is exactly correct and the hierarchy of road users specifically states that cyclists should be looking out for pedestrians with the onus on the cyclist to ensure the safety of the pedestrian.
I've been cycling in London for just over a year now and I have the mindset of "no one can see me, everyone is trying to hit me" so I rarely if ever try and overtake and don't weave through traffic if I can help it. Had one or two run ins with impatient cyclists, absent minded pedestrians and careless drivers but for the most part it hasn't been too bad. Then again the pandemic has reduced traffic quite a bit.

Often they bring their cars over with them. I love cars so it's great to see so many awesome supercars in London in the summer months.
When I was learning to drive my dad drove me to parliament Square at rush hour and got and told me to drive home (wimbledon). Yes it was hard looking out for cyclists and pedestrians and trying to read the road signs but I swear that's the best thing my dad did for me learning to drive.
2:19 when the light turns green you must wait for pedestrians to clear the crossing. Bullying them out of the way is not how its done, any pedestrian already in the road has priority. So many times you don't even slow down and just weave around them, can't demand respect when you don't respect more vulnerable road users
@@benschuster9792 Beautiful theory, but sadly lots of pedestrians refuse to wait for cyclists, like those in my video who start crossing despite the red figure showing on the crossing. If I just sit and wait, the pedestrians will just keep streaming across. Only time they stop is if a car comes, and if I’m sat there waiting I’ll get beeped at by the car for my trouble. Sad but that’s how it is, I have to set off otherwise they won’t stop crossing. And no, pedestrians do not have default right of way in the road any more than cyclists have default right of way over cars. You’ve misunderstood the road hierarchy, rules still continue to apply to all road users including pedestrians. Rule 22 tells them not to start to cross when they have a red figure on the crossing, and rule 7, especially 7 (d) says that, before crossing pedestrians must stop, look, IF TRAFFIC IS APPROACHING LET IT PASS, and wait for a safe gap before crossing.

@@ingmarneple6072 Yes, the people weren't right either but if your cycling through one of the world's biggest cities, people can't hear you, see you and are in a rush so it just takes some common sense to slow down until you're in a less populated area
On a green light, it means go if its clear. You dont just aggressively surge forward and shout at others to move. At any crossing pedestrians generally have the right to cross if they are already crossing. A lot of pedestrians just blindly walk out when the cammer is 2ft away, but the cammer needs to allow other to finish crossing also.
Yes, I follow the rules and wait at the crossings, those other cyclists didn’t. So I will call them out. It’s the duty of all road users to follow the rules irrespective of their mode of transport, pedestrians too.
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 You’re probably better behaved than 90% of cyclists in London, but you’re not following all the “rules”. Peds already in a crossing, even if green for traffic, still have the right of way!
@@lheroisme Nowhere in the Highway Code does it say that Paul. All road users have a duty to take actions to avoid a collision. In all cases I have stopped for or avoided the pedestrian, that duty falls on them too. They do not have default right of way just because they ignored the crossing rules.
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 in fact it does, in the section on traffic lights. “GREEN means you may go on if the way is clear. Take special care if you intend to turn left or right and give way to pedestrians who are crossing” Totally agree with your observations on pedestrians, but as age-old wisdom dictates, two wrongs don’t add up to right. Peds are unpredictable, and very unlikely to have any liability in case of any accidents. Appreciate that it is frustrating to keep losing momentum at crossings, but that’s the nature of city riding. If you don’t like it, buy a motorcycle and stick to cycling on country roads / spin classes. BTW I am a cyclist, a motorcyclist, and sometimes even a pedestrian in London.
@@lheroisme I found a clear gap on all of those green crossings, and if someone walked into that gap I stopped for them or went around. A few started to walk out without looking and heard my warning and stopped. They have a duty to let on coming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. Because they step one foot out without looking doesn’t give them right of way and I stand by my statement that the Highway Code does not state that they do. Reality of cycling in a busy city like London during rush hour is that there are a vast number of pedestrians who are in the road as either they don’t look, or they do, see you and just don’t care. So if no road traffic can proceed when a pedestrian has ignored the rules and is in the road then we should an all traffic and pedestrianise everything. That’ll be a massive blow to social mobility, deliveries, and the economy at large. A realistic solution is to do more to teach people from a young age the importance of following the crossing rules and to look where they are going. This is what’s behind the jaywalking rules in many states in the US. Personally I think that’s a bit draconian but we need to do something as these pedestrians take no responsibility yet risk not only their health but the health of others!

Imagine how much money police would "earn" if incidences like these were taken more serious and penalties were applied strictly starting from pedestrians passing red lights at Tottenham Court Road / Oxford Circus.
You want to fine people for running a red light, on their bike, with no incoming crossing cars? Seriously? Just have guys like this film them, calling them idiots. That is the appropriate punishment.
Oh good lord! That bloke at 1:36 had my heart up in my throat. I've seen first hand what it looks like when lorrie meets bike. Short version, the lorrie wins to a degree that it puts you off your mortal kombat, not to mention your tea. Anyway, thank you for filming and sharing your road experience. It aught to be compulsory watching for anybody who takes part in traffic (and that expressly includes the pedestrians. By god, step blindly into a bike lane like that here in Amsterdam and there will be choice words, if not worse).
Sorry that you've had to witness that. Lorries are the main cause of death for cyclists in the city, I just don't see the point in taking the risk with them! @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 Cheers Ryan. I too hope your country gets to see that change. Growing up in the early 80's, i saw it happen here. Back when i first learned to ride, city traffic here looked a lot like what we can see in this video. One of the main reasons the infrastructure in my country has changed so much was because of the lorrie meets bike issue. The No-Zone problem simply made separating bike traffic from heavy motorized traffic a necessity. It took a few decades of infrastructure remodeling and educating everybody, but it was well worth the results. And if we weird swamp-dwellers can manage it, the old empire can certainly manage it. Here's hoping. Happy trails and ride safe, good sir.
@@aosagi79 We do have a few properly segregated lanes now which work well (when the pedestrian don't walk in them). There is a space limitation in London however which complicates it. Since new rules the number of inconsiderate cyclists increased so I started to walk in the middle of cycling lanes. No such thing as Jay walking in the uk (such a shit rule in the US IMO). Pedestrians can cross at any time, and they have right of way on the road according to the Highway Code hierarchy of road users. Faster moving traffic and more dangerous vehicles have to slow down. Safety is much more important than right of way.

Honestly a lot of these are just a standard day... pedestrians are going to walk across the road if they think nothing is coming, less experienced cyclists are going to fill a gap without looking... sometimes cars are going to cut into a cycle lane without looking or indicating too haha. Part of my learning curve cycling in London has just been to anticipate this happening and make sure I have a finger on the brakes. I'm either cycling or walking, so I can see these situations from those two perspectives pretty well, but I'm probably not aware of many pains of car drivers with cyclists and pedestrians.
So true. In my small town, pedestrians look at me with confusion when I (or cars) stop at crossings. Road users often confuse their hesitation for yielding, when they are in fact, just being cautious that you'll observe the law.
Buses and HGVs are very dangerous if you collide with them. However they can't change direction quickly so if you pay attention it's quite straightforward to stay out of their way. Too many cyclists fail to do that. Biggest danger of collision cycling in London is pedestrians, closely followed by other cyclists - in both cases due to their unpredictability. In 10 years of cycling in London I had two accidents where pedestrians just stepped off the pavement without looking, but I didn't feel in any great danger generally as I was moving at the same speed as the traffic. I now live in the countryside and don't cycle nearly as much. Mixing with cars and trucks driving at 60mph feels much more dangerous.
It seems to me like most cyclists just HATE to stop for ANYTHING. The idea of hitting the brake is completely alien to them. Once they've got their speed up it's just, get out of my way, get out of my way. And if they hit someone it's never their fault.

Agreed, there’s a lot more than can be done. The section of dedicated cycle lane I use in London frequently has pedestrians walking out into it however. Because the know cars don’t use it they think it’s safe to just step out into. So there needs to be better education on it too.
Only problem with that is after a whole lot of tax money is spent paying for this there will be a bunch of idiots with bikes made out of matchsticks who will still insist on riding in the road. As per example in video of "cycle lanes are not compulsory" such a disrespectful comment. Cycle lanes were built upon our request as cyclists for our safety and other road users yet you don't want to use it as it is not convenient enough for you!!!!! Winds me up. @@diamondsearle Trust me, where cycle lanes are available cyclists use them. They are not a silver bullet though and there are many times cyclists need to be in the road: 1. Many areas don’t have cycle lanes, or the cycle lane may be on the other side of the road where you can’t get to it easily. 2. There are often cars, taxis, buses, delivery lorries parked in the cycle lane. In these cases cycles will need to move into the road to go around them. 3. If I need to turn right at the junction ahead I’ll need to get out of the cycle lane in advance to get over to the right hand lane. 4. Similarly cycle lanes often stop before roundabouts, and cyclists will need to get into the correct lane etc. If you see a cycle ahead of you just treat it the same as if it was a slower car. Just hold back and be patient. Trust me, cyclists don’t want to be in the middle of the road with impatient drivers tucked up behind them any longer than necessary! They’ll clear out of the way soon as they can.
Most of your points I agree with (I am a cyclist also) and am just having a rant there is obviously no issues when you are at roundabouts, junctions etc traffic should be moving slower in these areas anyway. I disagree that cycle lanes are not used just because they are not as convenient or easy to get too. We have two cycle lanes on a wide pavement area off the road area as this is too narrow however not one single roadie uses the cycle lane while the majority of other bikers use them. Why is this? I can only assume its due to them not wanting to slow down for junctions. When the cycle lane is not used this causes serious and dangerous issues on this section of road, dangerous situations that are easily avoided by using the specially built cycle lanes. At least in our area. Another instance is if your holding people up you should give way and make every effort to allow people to pass. If your the slowest thing on the road anyway. Who knows (not you) why the people behind might be in a rush. I got taken to hospital with a broken leg once from a mtb accident and got held up on a single track road by 2 road cyclists who refused to move over and let us pass for over 5minutes. They gave us the finger when we beeped them. Gotally selfish attitudes. These are the people that drive me mad!! Nobody owns the roadways but slower gives way to faster and faster should stay clear.
@@diamondsearle I can only speak from my own experience in London but most cyclists use the lanes. I’ll always use them where available, much safer for a start. In a perfect world everyone would obey all the rules of the road
But we live in an imperfect work
The best way to avoid crashes and accidents is to assume everyone else on the road has no idea what they are doing.
Just because you may have right of way doesn't mean ignore everything around you
In bigger cities with congestion expect pedestrians to emerge from nowhere, anticipate a door opening in stationary traffic, or vehicles not indicating, even cyclists weaving in and out of traffic.
The amount of times I've seen road users not paying attention to their surroundings because they have right of way,
you may have right of way, and the other person is at fault, but you also need to proceed with due care and attention
People should follow the rules of the road, but we don't live in paradise. Keep yourself safe by assuming every other road user is incompetent
This is exactly correct and the hierarchy of road users specifically states that cyclists should be looking out for pedestrians with the onus on the cyclist to ensure the safety of the pedestrian.
By the look of it they are all as bad as each other in London.
Yeah, but only one cohort is responsible for killing people every year, and it is not the pedestrians doing it.

At any crossing pedestrians generally have the right to cross if they are already crossing.
A lot of pedestrians just blindly walk out when the cammer is 2ft away, but the cammer needs to allow other to finish crossing also.

You’re one of the few respectful cyclists who have a genuine reaction to bad drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Cycle on mate, you’re a legend!
So true. In my small town, pedestrians look at me with confusion when I (or cars) stop at crossings. Road users often confuse their hesitation for yielding, when they are in fact, just being cautious that you'll observe the law.
Cycling on a city street full of busses and HGV's you want your head looking at but it's good I suppose for organ donation.
Thankfully still have all my organs in tact after 14+ years of daily cycling. 😉👍

Even if the cycle lanes are not ideal use them otherwise they will not improve them. Its your social responsibility to do so. Its not their fault If your bike can't handle the odd kerb or corner.
@@diamondsearle Trust me, where cycle lanes are available cyclists use them.
They are not a silver bullet though and there are many times cyclists need to be in the road:

Whilst you are reading the Highway Code, please read rule 7, specifically 7(d). Rule 7 and it’s subsections state that pedestrians, before crossing, must stop, look, if traffic is coming let it pass (road traffic has right of way), and wait for a safe gap before crossing.
Near Blackfriars u didn’t need to go on the road? There was a cycle late on the other side that I use, he had good reason to beep.
Firstly, it’s not mandatory for cyclists to use the cycle lane. So it’s never ok to beep a cyclists simply for being in the road.
Secondly, you can see in that clip that I join from the right, the cycle lane is on the other side. Not going to try and ride across four lanes of traffic and cross the central island to get to the other side.
Other side of the tunnel the cycle lane crosses to the left and then I turn into it. I’m only on that road for about 400m, the van driver should have just chilled out.
What comes to my mind: inappropriate speed!
Me too. Cammer is hardly blameless in his cycling
What comes to mind is how stupid people are
Wow you are literally the first decent cyclist I've come across. Keep it up and set a good example for the idiots.
Some cyclists a crazy. I guess they have never watched bestg*re videos...
It seems like you have a fear of loosing speed/ momentum. Are you too weak to brake and accelerate?
I stop when I need to, that my videos are filled with misses is testament to my braking.
Shame pedestrians fear losing momentum so much they can’t stop and look before stepping off the pavement! 😉👍🏻
Great to see someone pointing out how bad ALL road users can be, not just blaming 'other groups'.
you should put a warning into the title... " not recommended for the weak hearted viewers"
Ha yes, my wife said her heart rate went up when she watched it.
I never go full-pelt through the city - it's too stressful - but if it means saving a couple of hours commute time over the week, I completely understand why many do.
THINK, slow down when you see people crossing
Think, slow down and wait to cross when you see oncoming traffic! Wait for a safe gap before crossing.
Once a ped has a foot on the road unfortunately they have right of way according to the highway code
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 back in the real world of heat set on Costa coffee in hand they dont
@@GSXRI300 No, that’s not correct. If a driver turns into a side road and a pedestrian has already started to cross then the driver should give way.
Otherwise pedestrians need to use the traffic crossings, or they must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass (road traffic has right of way), then wait for a safe gap before crossing.
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 one of the proposals in last year's Highway Code consultation was to change that so pedestrians always have priority over all other users, even if they haven't yet started to cross. Hoping that isn't taken onboard, would cause all kinds of chaos for everyone. And lead to more pedestrians not paying attention to the roads.
0:20 that gave me a fright! - 1:57 loved the dodging action there. - 2:42 😍 - 5:18 was that toilet paper? 😂 - Great choice of music (should do the same and put my tunes really low volume). Great compilation by the way 😊👍
So glad that you liked the video.
I've had a commenter saying that they like the background noise, so I may try no music in my next video, see how it does.
It wasn't loo roll but similar, I think it was some sort of cleaning cloth, bit thicker which was why I was worried he'd get tangled.
Just quickly checked your channel, I've seen a few of your videos before. Great content. I've subscribed and will watch a few more later.
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 thanks for the sub! 😊 👍
everytime i hear a british lad say "f*cking hell* is the best time ever... polite and annoyed at the same time :D love it
1:49 lol))
all those wearing a gopro should chill
It is your fault. Go slowly to the city center.
What's my fault? There was no accident to be at fault for!
My average speed is 15mph, speed is not the problem. I'm slower than the cars on the same roads and they present far more danger to pedestrians.
Everyone knows that the roads are dangerous, that is why we drill into our kids to look before walking into the road. Shame many adults seem to think these crossing rules no longer apply to them!
Somebody get this man a brake pad sponsorship!
0:28 Cam cyclist definitely needs to take some responsibility for that one and learn to do better. If a car overtook him that close how would he react?
There should be a speed limit for bikes is all I fan say. You all racing in public space thats problem here
Motorists: Cyclists are too slow & should be off the road REEEEE!
Also motorists: Cyclists are too fast REEEEE!
We’re far slower than the 30mph speed limit the cars are travelling at!
@@PSNragglefraggle1 🤣 Yeah, they don’t see the hypocrisy! We’re always too fast until we’re in front of their car then it’s BEEEEP BEEEP BEEEP!
“Biker gets hit by truck”. This is why no one cares 👍
You don’t care, many do.
My most common utterance when cycling in central London: “Whoah, oh,oh, ohhh!”
🤣 I feel your pain! Keep safe my friend.
This looks so unenjoyable 😂
I would just stop riding if this was the place I lived in
You are the most brave and respectfull cyclist ever. If just half cyclist were like you, I would start think different of them.
Thank you. So glad that you understand. 🙂👍🏻
I ring my bell really loudly. It does nothing!! Often they just walk in front of me like I'm not there! 🤷♀
@@Rebecca236 So many oblivious people sadly. Keep safe out there 👍🏻
Just started cycling and some things I don't get from a cyclists perspective. At 3.30 the white car slowly nudges out to do a right turn... Plenty of time for you to slow down or stop to assist his turn in the same way that the oncoming traffic will slow down so he can filter in.
Is there some sort of 'rule' that forbids simple road courtesy?
I ride a motorbike and dive a car (40yrs now) too.... I would have slowed/stopped to enable his turn
Holly shit! That was really scary. Come to Copenhagen and see how it should be done. There is so much wrong there I wouldn't know where to start. But proper bicycle lanes would help. I'd never ride under those conditions, but kudos to you for leading the way. I hope you make it and I'll never complain about the Danish cycling infrastructure ever again!
Hello to Denmark. The UK is a long way behind many Nordic countries with cycle infrastructure and culture unfortunately. Let’s hope one day we catch up. 🙂👍🏻
Thank you for sharing your videos and suggesting "Not to bring your bike when visiting London".
That is why we Indian's Take our First Left and then Right. Because, Of British.
We still has close contact with the British.
Awesome and beautiful 👍🇮🇳
Namaste my friend. I’m not a fan of what the British did to the “colonies” back then, but glad we left some positive things with India too. Glad that India is a strong independent nation now.
My company has offices in Mumbai and I have some 2,500 colleagues in India, and visit Mumbai every few years. Love it, the people are very welcoming and the food is divine! 🙂👍🏻
You point out a lot of things people need to know about and be aware of. My one criticism is that sometimes you are going too fast for the conditions. In town centre areas there are always going to be unexpected hazards, usually people stepping out without looking. I know it's their fault not yours when you bump into them or have a near miss but I think we have to accept that is what we have to deal with right now and to ride accordingly.
This is NOT meant in a confrontational way, you're a good rider and deal with the obstructions well and without clobbering anyone and maybe the adrenaline rush might make them look out in future.
The GoPro wide angle makes it look faster than it is. My average speed on my commute is less than 15mph, and from that speed I can stop in a few metres. Have to be so alert on the city cycle though, so many people not looking where they are going.
Have a great weekend. 🙂👍🏻
London....
The armpit of England.
The wart of the UK.
Nice video. Stay safe bro.
Thank you Wes. Have a healthy 2021. 🙂👍🏻
Nice collage ;-) / I actually miss riding in London
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I’ve been working from home since March so I’m missing cycling in London too! 😉👍🏻
Fair play to you, I’m as keen as cyclist as any but cycling in London looks other worldly to me! ... absolutely bonkers. Good luck with it!
