I had a similar experience with seeing the movie before knowing that it was even based on a show, then not wanting to watch the show, but eventually watching it and immediately loving it. Can't say that I've had any problems with the names though. Maybe that's just because I'm bad at remembering names in general, and I'd forgotten most of the pronunciations in the movie by the time I watched the show.

My uncle hates animation with a passion. He thinks it only works when it’s Looney Tunes or anything similar, and if any animation features good story or characters or drama, he only hates it even more since to him all those things only mean anything if they have “real people” presenting it, otherwise it’s all wasted. I thought showing him Avatar would convince him, but he still hated it. Then he went ahead and saw the movie, and given how everyone hated it I thought he’d finally get it, but no. He liked the movie more purely because it’s live action, and nothing else mattered. Sometimes I don’t get him.
my immediate reaction to finding out that they're making a live action ATLA series was "wait, what? why? i thought we already did that one, and it was bad."

Worth mentioning that the show's intro, when showing all four elements, shows actual, ancient Chinese writing in the background. The movie's recreation of the intro has random bullshit nonsense pen strokes, that vaguely sort-of resemble Chinese (to me anyway, I don't speak Chinese so maybe it really looks nothing like it to a fluent speaker.) Reminds me of how 4Kids anime dubs got rid of every reference to Japanese culture and changed names for no reason other than Americanizing it. The removal of actual Chinese, on top of the whitewashing, makes me feel some kind of emotion I can't describe, but it's not a good emotion.
I am so happy that despite barely watching Avatar and only have seen a handful of scenes and episodes when I was very young during the first release (that and some of Korra), that I was introduced to that first Most vivid memory is Sokka hallucinating in the desert currently waiting for the right time to just binge watch the entire series.
I was a child, like at most 3rd grade. I watched this in the theater with my dad and older sister, and I was so hyped. I came out of that film so full of disdain my dad got mad at me and said we’d never go to the theater again if I kept acting like that.
A time of peace when Avatar: the last airbender was one of the greatest animated media to grace our screens, but that all changed when the live action adaptation attacked…
The kid who played Aang in the movie was in only one other film around the same time called Cowboys and Aliens, and I actually remember being stunned when I found out that was the same kid because his acting was actually pretty emotive and half decent in that movie. It just goes to show you how actors of all skill levels seem to forget how to act when Shyamalan starts directing them. Also whenever I'm having a bad day, I like to look up the pebble dance scene, because half a dozen earthbenders doing a dance so they can very slowly levitate a small rock into the face of a guy who's probably too stunned at how stupid this is to get out of the way is hilarious to me. It's the only good scene in the entire film.
I remember my family rewatching this mess when it showed on TV, my sister walked in to Zuko, screamed he's supposed to be caucasian not indian, then left.
the first time i saw any part of this movie was a clip of aang saying "my name is ong" and that made me think that ong was a different character than aang
Wow, I would never expect one of M. Night Shyamalan's movies to be one of the worst films in history. He's created so many astonishing movies and then there's just The Last Airbender in the middle of them.
wait until they read the children’s book “the dark is rising” which got American fried, the main anganist removed, the main character’s master removed, and the plot is now about a dude whose brother is in a snow globe.
The TV series adaptation gonna be shit too. People need to learn that not every animated thing needs a live action remake. The continual process of remaking animation to live action is a show of how executives view animation as a “lesser” medium
I used to watch the series all the time with my dad and sister, my dad watched the movie, told me how terrible it was. The first thing he complained about was the names being incorrect and I immediately hated it. Also he told me about the earth bending being terrible and seeing that they need FIVE earth benders to move a rock I could have moved the exact same way is hilarious and sad. I hope I never have the unfortunate experience of seeing it.
saw this movie in theatres when I was seven and remember nothing that happened (i also never saw the show) I just got to the part of the video where they mention Sokka being played by Jackson Rathbone and I'd like to ask why he somehow looks nothing like Jackson Rathbone in the screencap provided (3:06)
I watched this travesty of a movie years before I saw the show. I legitimately couldn't keep Iroh and Zhao straight. I didn't even realize Zuko had a scar for crying out loud! I didn't hate the movie at the time, but it didn't seem that good either. Just eh. Then, I finally saw the show. Before the end of the first episode, I realized two things. I realized that the movie was a pile of hot garbage, and I realized why everyone loves the show so much. I binge watched the entire show in a about a month (which is saying something considering I was in high school at the time). I couldn't get enough of it. Everything is so good. I've rewatched the show a couple times since then because it's just that good. How did they mess up the movie so badly? I don't understand how it's even possible to start with the show as a source material and end with the movie.
Seems like m. night shyamalan took the screenplay of atla, put it into google translate 50 times, shortened it, and then translated it back to english for his movie's screenplay
Funny thing is, M. Night supposedly changed the pronunciations of names to be more "accurate" but didn't realize how weird it'd be to change the characters' names after them being pronounced a certain way for years. He also didn't consider that the "accurate" pronunciations could clash with the characters' origins. Sokka is the biggest example of this. His name is based off the Japanese word for "I understand" and the way they pronounce it in the movie is how it's "accurately" pronounced, but Sokka himself is from the Water Tribe, which is very Inuit/Native American coded. So changing his name to the Japanese pronunciation just feels weird and off considering the culture he's from.
Source: your ass. Who said Sokka was from japanese for "I understand" ??? Also even with Native spelling it should also sound like "Soh-kaa" anyway rotfl
This is a terrible live-action adaptation, but it's not the WORST. At least you could tell Shyamalan WATCHED the animated series, unlike the people who made Dragonball: Evolution.
When i was little i watched a lot of Avatar: the last airbender, and even then i hated this movie, i can't remember much of it but i do remember it was VERY bad.
I thought I watched this in 2018-19 or something, and yet I forgot about it. I didnt know it was that old 😯. Time really flied since I watched that movie. It really flew over my head.
I wouldn’t want to “um, actually” all these people, but there’s an interview or behind-the-scenes thing that says they said the character’s names how they would be pronounced ethinically (I think that’s the word I mean).
ethnically. Also like v ironic that they were trying to pronounce the characters' accurately to their respective ethnicities, but then white-washed most of the cast.
I was looking for this comment! How we say Aang is like the "americanized" version of the word. I just recently understood why people were so mad at the movie for saying """Ong""" because I watched the TV show dubbed in my native language and they also pronounced it "Ong"
“We’re gonna make the pronunciations of these characters more accurate to how it would be pronounced ethnically, but also change their skin colour and butcher the martial arts, the things already representing the ethnicities of these characters.”
@@lysiamoreno7431yeah, same for me. But the live action is still english, so I think they should've used the same pronunciations as the original english.
@@aurzellitrue. The bending in the original series looked so good because there was a unique look to every bending style, which also tied up with the element itself(airbending- wavy and quick motion, waterbending- smooth body movement, earthbending- rigid and steadfast body movement, firebending- energetic and aggressive movement). This was just cheap dance.
I wanted to watch the series since I never did as a kid but my parents wanted me to suggest a film we could watch with the whole family so I said this movie as a joke and we actually watched it… I laughed almost the whole time bc of how badly done it was, I could see the potential and how badly they fucked it up

Why don't we all collectively agree that this trash movie is now a parody? The next time I watch it, I'm going to pretend it was supposed to be a parody so maybe I'll get some enjoyment out of it this time. I also watched it before I watched the show, and I wasn't aware of how bad it was, so I wasn't excited for the show. I loved the show, and now I get it. Shame on me.
The thing about the name is funny for me, since its the german version of the name Aang. Like, the writing ist the same but the pronunciation is different. Maybe M. Night Shyamalan just liked the german name better? Idk
My dad said it was amazing and that people that made this movie were using their "artistic vision" of the movie as if it's something new and not a live action version of an anime 😭
I'm just gonna start off by saying that this film is pure disrespect to the original script of the original series. In the original, Aang seems like a brave and strong boy who fights for the people he loves, but in the film he is a scared child who gives up everytime he's being attacked. Not just that, but the cgi and the actors are horrible, I mean.. 6 earthbenders doing a 10 second ritual to move a single pebble? And don't even get me started on the pronounciations of the names. I don't even want to talk about it, but after painfully watching the film to the end only because I adore this fandom I have to talk about it. Saying Ovatar instead of Avatar, saying Ong instead of Aang, saying Soukka instead if Sokka and saying Eeroh instead of Iroh. Disgusting. The scar on Zuko's face represents the trauma he had from that one day, vut in the movie, it's barely shown and he doesn't show his deep feelings and isecurities showing that it deeply reminds him of a horrible day. I'm commenting this because I deeply care about the show and I want to express my feelings for this peice of garbage. Hope they go bankrupt. Thank you for anyone who read this to the end ❤

as someone who watched it when the movie was released when I was a kid, it was the greatest disappointment I could have witnessed. in the cartoon, bending is a few movements to bend the elements , but in the movie it's turned into a fking gymnastics routine. so many things were wrong, firebenders couldn't just create fire, katara being pretty useless despite her being awesome in the source material, no iroh going kyoshi, no moon deletion when the moon spirit is killed, no pissed off giant water monster ocean spirit singlehandedly driving back the fire nation invasion fleet. but most of all, the truly greatest fk up they did, HOW DO YOU MISSPRONOUNCE THE NAME AANG WHEN IT'S SAID SO CLEARLY IN THE CARTOON OVER AND OVER AND OVER LIKE WTF IS WRONG WITH THOSE STUPID PIECES OF UTTER ***********************.
Im so glad I got into this franchise as an adult and went into the movie knowing it was bad. If I had seen this when it first came out as a fan of the show I would have been devastated but intead I spent the whole time making fun of it and then went and looked back over the season 1 episode summaries to see how I would have done a better adaptation. And then introduced my family to the show and watched in glee as I made them suffer through the movie too. Good times. I'm looking forward to the Netflix show. It would take some serious talent to do a worse job than this did and even just from the trailers that are out it seems to be an improvement. I don't think it will be exactly like the show so I'm not going in expecting that and giving it a chance to be it's own thing.
The movie is way better than the cartoon. Netflix can adapt it all they want, they won’t top the 2010 movie. And i hope something bad happens to you if you think it’s bad
I'm watching the Netflix's version, initially, i thought it was a bit underwhelming, but then i remember this adaptation exist and it makes the Netflix adaptation a masterpiece. I mean, Netflix did quite well on being faithful to the material source, my complain was Sokka that less funny and less sexist, and Princess Yue that looks not great, other than that they did good.
I remember watching this in theaters with no prior knowledge of the show beforehand as a kid. One of the most memorable moments I can think of was how disappointed and sad everyone around me looked when I left the theater. Edit: And yeah, I found it a really long, generic, and boring film with terrible acting.
When i was growing up i was *pretty cringey* and wanted to be a fire bender purely for the power that came with the idea of it...... Now growing up i like the idea of being an earth bender but i always wondered if flora also counted as earth material because of the connection between root systems and soil so if i was i could go around thr world and solve deforestation and just.. a lot of natural problems (at least before im assassinated for it)

For clarification on Sokka’s name it’s sock (like the thing you wear on your feet) -ah

The Last Airbender was a timeless classic.
Until the Shyamalan Nation attacked.
A time of peace when Avatar: the last airbender was one of the greatest animated media to grace our screens, but that all changed when the live action adaptation attacked…
And the live action adaptation was a masterpiece and ended being way better than the terrible cartoon
@@Mr.Drew70Who the fuck invited Azula?

There was an episode where yue’s fiance mispronounced Sokka’s name and Sokka wasn’t having any of it.
Me and my brother at one point tried to ironically watch it but had to stop because it was pure agony.
Wow, I would never expect one of M. Night Shyamalan's movies to be one of the worst films in history. He's created so many astonishing movies and then there's just The Last Airbender in the middle of them.
6:02 momo looks like Zaboomafoo with bat ears
I practically have the show memorized and I still had no idea what was going on half the time during the movie.
7:29 how'd they end up fucking it up so badly that he got his German name in this?
wait until they read the children’s book “the dark is rising” which got American fried, the main anganist removed, the main character’s master removed, and the plot is now about a dude whose brother is in a snow globe.
I feel like live action adaptation and anime should usually never cross paths with each other
I don't even watch anime, but you're absolutely correct.
saw this movie in theatres when I was seven and remember nothing that happened (i also never saw the show) I just got to the part of the video where they mention Sokka being played by Jackson Rathbone and I'd like to ask why he somehow looks nothing like Jackson Rathbone in the screencap provided (3:06)
M. Night Shyamalan made this movie for his daughter who loved the cartoon... She must have been so disappointed 😭😭
Oh, boy.
The sad thing is, most of what was wrong wasn't even shamalyans fault. It was paramount interfering to "make it appeal to a wider audience."
When i was little i watched a lot of Avatar: the last airbender, and even then i hated this movie, i can't remember much of it but i do remember it was VERY bad.

I recommend Hello Future Me’s rant that’s longer than the actual movie.
