Katie Tracy my advice is that you should finish something that you started. I’m actually not studying this semester because my family is not working but It cost me a lot of effort to enter the university that I have to finish. This is just an advice. ❣️ Hopefully it helps for your decision.

    1. Do you have advisors, counselors, or professors at Cornell you can talk to? Do so. And make the conversations ongoing.
    2. I think Cornell needs you and you need Cornell. Cornell wants to be associated with the successes you are apt to achieve. You want the Cornell name and experiences to enhance your ability to achieve those successes. However, Cornell would be fine without you and you would be fine without Cornell. If you and Cornell can continue to work towards your degree, I think you should do that.
    3. You know so well that life is uncertain. Man plans, God laughs. Keep your faith. Stay grateful. Continue to desire to help others and be of service to others. I think Cornell can help you reach those goals. And you can reach those goals without Cornell too.
    4. Keep posting your videos! Smile, laugh, cry! That’s all real stuff. Keep your videos real. That’s why they are great!

I think Zoom learning is inferior to in-person learning - the question is whether or not to trust Cornell’s safety precautions . Also remember the professors and support staff (i.e. cafeteria workers and janitors) are more vulnerable to covid complications than the students. A recent survey of Cornell professors showed 1/3 were enthusiastic to return teaching, 1/3 did not want to return yet and the other 1/3 were in the middle - this is a tough time for everybody. Also from November thanksgiving to the beginning of February is a big gap in time! Would you return home, apply for an internship or work on a side project or your thesis? Knowing you, probably some combination of these activities!

Hey Katie! I just wanted to say that IF for some reason you do decide to take a break from college and continue another time, then it's not all that bad to begin with! Trust me, I understand a bit about how you feel about the "Graduate on time" situation. I was really determined to graduate no more than 4 years in a row and stay in the average age limit that everyone else goes to school at. I started college for the first time in 2012 when I was 19 and studied for a year and a half before I made the decision to take a break (due to financial issues). I took a two-year break to work, then I went into the military for four years so I could get the Post 9/11 GI Bill to pay for school. Now I'm 27 years old about to start my 3rd semester at Cornell University! Please don't let the time or age factor impact your decision on whether to continue your education, if you really want something hard enough then I know you'll do what it takes to get your degree! I wish you all the luck on your journey through this difficult situation. YOU GOT THIS!!!

As an incoming college freshman, I am also dealing with the struggle of taking a gap year/deferring my admission. I have cried so many nights over this decision as I feel that my southern university is putting more value on my out-of-state tuition than my life. My university already threatened that any students who do not enroll in person for the fall will lose their scholarships and spot in the Honors Program. I can't imagine your struggle as an international student, but this video made me feel like I'm not the only one struggling with this decision.

Hey Katie, as a graduate i’d like to say the degree (especially one from an elite university) is really important. As far as I see a degree may not just represent the lectures and credits you got, but also the capability to cope with the stress, pressure, the uncertainties just as now. So please don’t drop out because of your impulse, though I do agree what you said about higher education. if you’re planning to take a gap year to help other people full time, please count me in! I would love to help and give my five cents back to the community❤️

Take the gap year if you can and come back, school will always be there and gain some life experience. If "Cornell" is not important on your diploma then this is the best option. I took three years off and went back to get my CPA, don't give yourself a timeline. Explode your UA-cam channel and then go back to school when you want to. Take the stigma away from young kids.

Hi katie :) i’m a highschooler from turkey. I relate with how overwhelmed you feel sometimes. Being from a well off family in turkish standards, i feel guilty when i know that some other people in my country don’t have opportunities close to that i have. I try to justify my lifestyle and education by thinking about the beneficial things that i might do in the future, but that responsibility can be overwhelming (considering i havent done much). But i think the important thing is to just do my best, and to not forget to take care of myself. There is a lot of injustice and pain in the world, but ourselves trying to feel that pain always isn’t helpful for anyone, i think instead it should be a motivation to keep going. Love your videos

I almost had the same mental breakdown like yours, it was immensely stressful. I supposed to graduate at the age of 22. Unfortunately, the uni that I plan to transfer to doesn’t accept transferees. The only option I had was to accept the idea of repeating my freshmen year again. I have talked to one of my good friends, he made me realize that education shouldn’t feel like a race that we are trying to finish earlier.

This is why I'm grateful for my university in Utah. They are having a lot of people on-campus this fall, but students who have special considerations can take classes remotely if they would like to. I'm a nursing major, so there's no online alternative for my simulation labs and my clinical rotations. I'm doing those two things in-person because I have no choice, but am opting to do my lectures online. I live in NJ which is clear across the country from my school, so I too was very worried about my school's plans for fall. I can live with only having to do some stuff in-person, but I also understand that this whole situation is amplified in difficulty for international students, because of visas, sheer distance from school, and the logistics of moving your things/border closures/booking flights to get there. Overall, I feel very lucky in my situation, but I pray that for you and all other international students, you're able to get through this and work out a plan that's best for you!

hi Katie! i'm currently a last semester senior in undergrad right now. i'm totally with you when you asked the question "why does college have to be 4 years?" i took a total of 6 years to graduate, while taking a year off during a leave of absence. i'm also a transfer student, so all of my credits didn't transfer leaving me back another year. i'm going to be graduating in the fall and i don't regret taking time off, transferring, or any of it! i highly encourage you to take a leave of absence if you can still maintain your visa status and if you end up deciding to transfer, that's okay too! forget all of the noise about a traditional college experience or having to finish in a certain time, its up to you how you pace yourself and your own choices! i'm personally going to weather through whatever this fall semester is going to look like because i only have 4 more classes to take and im graduated! i'm hoping i will be able to do it online though because i would like to prioritize mine, my familys, and others safety. i'm wishing you peace and clarity and i know you will be so relieved when you finally make a decision!

I believe in you Katie! You've worked so hard to get into Cornell and you've just got 2 more years. With the current situation if you take a leave of absence there may be circumstances in the future in which you may not be able to return to Cornell, so that delays getting your degree. And I know that virtual instruction is not the same as the traditional classroom approach. Stay calm, try to think the best for your future, we're all there with you and will support your decision no matter what it is!! Do keep us updated on your future plans!! :)

I relate to this!!! I totally get that online classes from home can feel like its not worth it especially since I took the extra step of studying abroad for the experience as well. As an international student myself, I'm really concerned about that but hopefully the UK is having a better trajectory for their covid cases. Hoping you and your family will stay safe! Thank you so much for sharing this. I have honestly been feeling so alone and disappointed as well with the whole college situation, yet have not been able to put into words all my feelings. Listening to you was such a relief and it gives me so much hope seeing such kind, genuine, and selfless people in the world. I want to thank you for sharing this video and all your other recent videos, they have helped me SO much along with so many others. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I hope you’re okay, I want to tell you its okay to feel emotional at these strange times. I’m experiencing something similar as well. I’m an IB student going to Y2 now. I was accepted to a very good school starting IB, I moved abroad alone and lived in a boarding house, made many great friends and I was looking forward to graduating high school there. Due to the pandemic I had to go back to my homecountry, but I was still paying for masssssive fees just for online classes. Eventually I decided I’d just move to back to the IB school in my home-country. I wanted to repeat a year but its not possible for me. Its heartbreaking, I thought this year in particular would be the best for me since I was accepted in a good school. We just have to accept the current situation we’re in right now and learn to be strong ! Also, thank you for being so kind and helping us IB students at these times. But please remember to be kind to yourself too!

Hey! I also grew up/live in asia and recently graduated college in Boston last year. Now I’m taking a gap year to study for grad school and just rest from the chaos of a 4 years in the us and away from home mess I dealt with lol. I currently have a brother who is still in college who is also stuck in this COVID mess... honestly, if you only had a semester or a quarter left, I’d say take your classes online, but if not DEFINITELY take a gap year. I know so many ppl who took gap years while they were in college and all of them have said it was the best choice. I think it’ll give you a really good opportunity to reevaluate your life, reconnect with home, and appreciate the two cultures you are a part of. If you really love/want your academics and degree, you’ll go back and get it in the near or far future.

Katie!! I understand this situation so much. It takes 2 flights and a couple of trains to get to uni. The three options you outlined are my exact situations and because of covid almost any country can experience a second wave of the virus so the first option is not great. Our tuition isn’t just for academics but for the college experience as well so the second option seems so wasteful. Dropping out is an option I’m considering as well but with covid I’m afraid I won’t do as much as I can the only difference is taking a leave of absence at my uni still guarantees the student continuing the next year. I’m in another country rn and their borders are closed so I can’t fly home to the Philippines. Packing up my life 6 months after doing the same thing was the most stressful experience of my life. Hang in there!!! A lot of us are. ❤️💕

That´s a great video! Most students are struggling with this amount of uncertainty right now, you´re not alone! Right now we actually have the ability to strenghten our adaptation skills and become better at thinking out of the box.
I think the idea of taking a Gap Year and then hopefully go back to your college is a good idea, if it wouldn´t be possible to go back to your college consider taking the Credit Points you earned and apply to another university which is close to your home. Then you can continue where you stopped at march :)
Good luck, stay humble & hang in there!

You should take the third option and take a leave of absence. I trust you'll be able to meander around this weird time and find some way to take full advantage of the opportunity around you. And while it seems scary you always have the opportunity to continue your education whether it be at Cornell or some other university, should you transfer. I totally agree with what you said about learning, learning will most likely be remote and I don't see the point of attending school and paying in-state tuition while classes will be remote. This situation sucks for sure for everyone

Hi Katie! Whenever I am in a bad situation I always cling on the bible verse from Deuteronomy 3:16 “Be Strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
God always have big plans for you and even if you drop out of Cornell and they did not accept you again, it is part of God’s plans for you. God might have better things for you and always keep your faith.
To be able to made this decision about dropping out, I would recommend you to pray for God’s guidance and listen to your instincts so that the decision that you made will be in line with God’s vision and will be best for you going forward.
Katie, always remembers that God will help you and countless others in this tough times. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10
Katie, keep up your good work and wish you all the best. Stay safe, stay healthy.

I happened by your vlogs as I scoured the internet about Cornell. I am a Filipina-American mom of two teens in Upstate NY. Your post today has prompted me to respond. You are one awesome young lady!!! One who is deeply thoughtful, responsible, introspective, generous and woke! You are on the right path in your thoughts. I agree with you, why come back to Cornell when you won't have the full experience? You are young and time is on your side, why rush college? Cornell will be here when the time is right. And if it is not Cornell, by your maturity and ambition, I am sure you will land in the right place. I KNOW you will finish university...it's just a Filipino thing....I know!!! One other thing I have just learned during these strangest of times and would like to share is that this is not the time to hold on to the previous plans you have set for yourself. The only way everyone can succeed is to let go and truly re-think and evolve with today. You have to brainstorm and re-think the future and be fluid. Those who adapt to change will come out of this on a higher plane. I know you'll do great in life as you let Him continue to guide you. Go Katie!

I am planning on dropping out of my uni in second year. I was doing really fine and even got 1st on my first year but I was never really interested in computing. Then all the covid thing happened. Online class started and I started not catching up with my lectures. I submitted the assignments but failed on one of the modules. I know that even I get this degree, I’m not going to pursue my career in this field. I always wanted to open my business so that’s what i am planning to do in the future. Thank you for sharing! I know for me as an incoming freshman at Tufts and I feel like both my senior year of HS and my freshman year has been compromised and I’ve had to cut out so much of the typical college experience and I was left with the question: “How much of the college experience can be taken away from me before it’s not college anymore?” I wanted the typical experience not COVID tests twice a week. For me I just had to let the grief overwhelm me. I was depressed for a month or two as I coped with all I lost but then realized that I want the relationships and to be in college for myself. I needed the experience, the accountability, and the friendships that I wouldn’t get online. Instead of feeling sorry for myself I began to work with the guidelines and not feel trapped but get creative. Now I feel optimistic and that I can go onto campus and work with the deck God dealt me and be joyful that I have the opportunity to meet new people and have the chance to be on campus.

Thank you for sharing your heart! I believe a 100% that online learning will never compare to classroom learning. Based on the experiences of the people I know, it’s such a waste of tuition fee because you just don’t get the same quality of education that you paid for. I do believe that taking a gap year would be best if you’re privileged enough not to get that pressure to find a job right away. Some people need to graduate right away so they can find a job and help provide for their family. For you, I think you don’t have that same pressure, except of course the negative connotation that comes with delaying your studies, and I totally understand that. But honestly, if you can set your mind past that, I’d really suggest you take a gap year and just spend the time taking internships or focusing on side hustles, joining local organizations that help the underprivileged, etc. I’m so sure that you, of all people, will find ways to stay productive and continue learning despite taking a gap year. So maybe just focus on your goal. Coming back to Cornell after a gap year might definitely be hard, but I’m sure they will adjust. They will find a way. For now, just focus on the present and see where your heart is taking you. Goodluck!

Thank you for making this video. the points and feelings you have spoken about are what I've also been thinking about for months. I've been talking to people to gain perspective on whether I should go to US college, take a gap year, or choose another uni in another country too. There's one advise a mentor told me as I was talking through my options, feeling like I'm escaping the reality by choosing to go to another country. They said "Don't make the US the centre of your world." It really made me pause and think. Yes, I was making the US the centre of my world, and I guess its not the right mindset. Its okay to choose what is best for yourself, your mental health, your relationships. It's okay to choose your second or third option since college is not all about learning. its not a failure cause you choose to do it. (... as for now, I chose to go to uni in another country...Yes, people question my decision and feels pity about me not choosing US college...well...the voices will soon fade...)
