There’s so many difficulties that international students face that I’m oblivious to. It wasn’t until I became best friends with an international student and heard his struggles where I was like OH WOW
omg, calling elders by their names is so so weird, i just cant!! even i am used to calling people, aunty and uncle, calling them with their names is so out of comfort zone haha
i'm not an international student, but when i moved to USA, it was so difficult to shift your pronunciations the American way! anyway, proud to have a filipino at cornell
I’m an incoming freshman from Indonesia (going to study in chicago) and am super stoked and grateful that you’re doing vids for international students!! Do make it a series ;) And maybe make one for essentials to bring/not to bring to the US
As an intl student whose family moved to a different country in Asia from where I studied in high school, I don't have too many friends in this country and my friends are all scattered everywhere! Haven't seen some for 2.5 years other than video calls 😂 Also I heard a tip for understanding Fahrenheit is to just think of it like a percentage bar of heat (where 0 ofc is really cold and 100 being hot)
As an international student here in the USA (rising junior here majoring in Comp Sci), I can totally relate to most of the things. My college is in the Midwest, so I had to get used to the accent, lifestyle, and what not but I have gotten so used to it. Great video Katie! You should definitely make more videos like those! Have a great summer break!!
Something that helps when I don't know how formal to behave with someone is that I like to start with speaking formally and next learn if that person is an exception, but you can see what works for you!
Great post - somebody else should do an expat video about what it is like to visit the Philippines or Thailand - I had a friend from Puerto Rico who died every winter and missed tropical fruit and being able to buy more than one kind of banana
We used to grow bananas in my old home in sw Miami - so great - raja puri small bananas - we would peel and freeze and use for smoothies and milkshakes - so much better than the grocery store! The only problem is the new shooter trees keep growing all around your yard
Great video and perspective. I’m actually Filipino-American and went to a California State university(Cal Poly). There’s a lot of international students at my university even when I was there. It seems through the years the California schools has gotten very popular with both domestic and international students and so many people apply each year . A big factor, weather is nicer than the East Coast , not to mention a lot of top tech companies are headquartered in California and they recruit at a lot of the schools here. Plus in CA there’s no shortage of Filipino food , lots of Jolibees, Max’s, Chow Kings, so a lot feel at home :) Good luck with your studies at Cornell!
That’s awesome and thanks for sharing! I totally agree and believe we’re entering a more globalized world each day. Take care and best of luck to you too!
I'm not an international student (and probably won't be due to the cost - in Poland you study for free unless you go to a private school), but it was very interesting for me to find out what do international students have to go through and maybe now I can understand their struggles more when I go to college. And as always, love you Katie!
ok as a filipina american i have a lot of issues when older ppl want me to call them by their first name. usually with professors i call them professor too and with older adults i still call them auntie and uncle even if they arent Filipino and usually they're accommodating because culturally that's how i (we) show respect. im also from the bay area and there's a lot of different cultures and specifically Filipinos. i intern with a predominately Filipino staff and it was so hard for me to not call them kuya or ate?? LOL luckily they understood and one of them sees me as their like younger sister so i call him kuya in general now lol
Hahaha, I relate to this so much! I'm come from an Indian family but I've lived in New Zealand and Australia for most of my life. As for addressing elders, I usually stick to the Ms/Mr format or if I'm close to them I use aunty or uncle. Stay safe Katy!
I’m Nigerian, and I’m going to college in the u.s, and like I have no idea how to dress for colder weather cause in Nigeria the coldest we get is 24•c(76• in Fahrenheit) and that’s only during the rainy season
I’m Indian and we are not supposed to go out of our houses alone like I can’t go to the market or anything alone even my bro can’t even tho he’s in college but yah I really likes ur video ♥️💕
If you got measured in cm and are converting over, 178 cm is 5-10. 5-9 1/2 would be ~176.5 cm. For your friends' parents, Mr./Ms/Mrs. Last Name is always safe although it's a little formal. If they say "please, call me X" go ahead and do that. You can use "Sir" or "Ma'am" if it's an older adult you want to show respect to and don't know their name at all.
I did international schooling then moved to ithaca for a year and a half then moved to sydney at the start of the year. I can defiently say that australian system is a lil more brutal than cornell but i LOVE it here compared to US
9:39 In spanish we have the pronouns "usted" (very formal, to show respect, usually for teachers and older people, like grandparents) and "tú" (very casual, the one you would use with your friends, siblings or even with your parents). So, I struggle with choosing the rigth pronoun when I first meet someone and usually go for your technique of "just make eye contac and start the sentence without a pronoun". I am very glad english just has "You".
The first time I went to Manila, the clerk at Jollibee asked me what drink to you want. But he was speaking with a super weird accent, and I got confused why he is asking me D-LINK, a company that makes router, at a fast food restaurant.
Hi Katie! May I know if you are using an US sim card? I am planning for a 1 year study and was thinking to get a sim card to contact people. What is your advice as an international student?

a lot of people use laptops in lectures to take notes, and the classes are huge, so the professor doesn't call people out. it varies between each professor's rules though!

OOH wow thanks for sharing lydia! I didn't know that. I love it😂
