So Mercs are better.....slightly.
The only reason C- and E-classes are so popular in Germany is because of their good diesel engines..
Btw they come from Renault. :D And models like the Mercedes X-Class are just Renault Alaskans with a fancy bodywork xD

If a car costs 50-100K new, can you be really surprised that it might cost a little bit more to repair than a car that cost less? I spent $400.00 on an alternator for my 2003 BMW X5 last week. It's a big 'ol heavy 150A thing that is actually water cooled. I'm not the least bit surprised it costs what it does, nor will I complain about it. It stands to reason that it should cost more than the run-of-the-mill 100A alternator in my old 1988 Jeep Cherokee. When you consider production numbers, type, and design it makes sense.
And then have the money song by Pink Floyd start playing over the radio

My father owned Mercedeses since 96, he was satisfied with all three of them but as soon they get older they all are a real pain to fix, very expensive parts. He drove all kinds of cars while working for a few companies but he says there is no car that drives you comfortable and quiet as a Mercedes. But the flip side is when they get old - they are pretty expensive to maintain and fix.
Thats why some people sell their mercedes and buy a new one after a few years

Mcgyver B not really because there such a pain to work on many mechanics say no
@@Zaya2499 that is not true. I spend a lot of time In a BMW repair shop with the mechanics as they work and they say they are built in a way that mechanics can navigate around. The repairs maybe a bit of a project but they say they can tell they were engineered to be worked on. Repairs aren't cheap though, if you can't afford to repair or do it yourself, do NOT buy one.
Yes so as the Porsche they're all the same
I have to say that when I was a kid my grandpa use to drive a diesel Mercedes and that thing never broke.
German diesels last forveer
I think Scotty has explained many times that older vehicles with less electronics and plastic parts are a lot easier to maintain.
That was a different era. Those old MB diesels were very slow, thirsty (I think), bad emissions but yes very reliable. The modern equivalent are the super reliable diesel Toyota Crown sedans they use as taxis on parts of Asia. Fully fitted with luxury & tech they are sold as Lexus LS.....the most reliable big luxury cars. Genesis are also rated as very reliable too. 2 newcomer brands much more reliable than the Germans
@@race890 It depends on where you live. In where I live taxi companies often use newer C or E Class for their fleet, and I have seen many in great condition for sale with >250k km
@@kawaiikoto8800 certainly. In taxi use cars can do many miles/kms because the engines are running warm a lot more of the time. Even in Australia most taxis were poorer quality Fords & Opels (called Holden in Aust) running on petrol-lpg. Many did 400,000km albeit with maintenance. In Dubai 10 yrs ago when I was there I was told that the Govt decided on running just Toyota Camrys back then because they were found to be the most reliable at handling the up to 55 degree Celsius (131F) days. The Toyota & Camry durability and reliability is well known to be way above any Euro cars for a similar price.

I definitely agree with you Scotty. I tow a lot of broken down German cars. A 2011 bmw I towed last night had around 100,xxx miles. The lady bought it a few months prior and with in a few weeks of owning it her starter went out as well that it needed brakes. She found out how expensive those repairs were and even though she bought it without a warranty she was able to get the dealer to pay for it. But last night the reason for her tow was that the car had stopped running.
I have a 328i and they’re not reliable by any means, but they’re fun cars to drive. Like Jeremy Clarkson once said “Just because something is unreliable, doesn’t mean it’s not great.” Lol

@@pauloochoa241 True, proper maintenance is the key. In Europe it's not unusual to see BMW e46, e39, e60 etc. with crazy mileages, especially the diesels they just run and run without major problems, follow the preventative maintenance schedule, change oil at 10-12000 km's (that's: 6-8k miles) and it will run forever. Mercs are the same, people often still drive 190E/D from early 1990's, plenty have over 500.000km and still running w/o issues or high expenses.
Now how does that make sense, does unreliable & great, make for a good car, LMAO
What's your definition of great?
I've owned a couple of off lease BMWs and they were for the most part reliable. Fear of major repair bills always took a bit of the fun out of owning them.
That 6.9 W116 @ 0:49 was a really great car. A high prestige beast loaded with innovations and equipped with a state of the art power plant that could disgrace almost all sport muscle cars of the era despite its weight. Few of them can still be seen cruising the roads.

Hey Scotty, leasing BMWs and Mercedes is a helluva good advice for al those who like those car brands. Thanks for sharing.
Over-engineered. Same with high end Audi.
Good luck maintaining them after warranty is over...
jcrnda engineering is not the issue usually. It is low spec parts. When parts are obtained from suppliers there are lots of choices. Toyota, and others ask and pay for higher service life spec, BMW cuts corners in this area. I replace items on BMW in my shop at half the mileage of replacing that same part on Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, and many others. Mercedes items go longer but usually less than their lower priced rivals.
Cheap plastic and too many electronics....
jcrnda you are right about unless you are a mechanic that specializes in Audi or BMW or Mercedes I have an Audi 2012 love it was a Audi VW specialist for 20 plus years get parts cheap I have all the diagnostic tool and specialty tools too
Martin Lavoie what about the effort in engine repairs? The parts are usually the easy part. It’s the time and effort to fix that’s upsetting. I imagine with today’s oils, if garage-kept or pre-heated, an Audi engine can make it to 500k miles? My Colorado VW 1.8t got to 330k but was smoking due to so many hot-cold cycles(many sub zero starts) and running the engine on low oil at times.
@@jamesmedina2062 That boat has sailed. It looks like the last Audi engine that could make it to 500K was their inline 5-cylinder that was phased out in mid-90s. But in city traffic not even half of that.
BMW vs. Mercedes: The Battle of the most expensive European Money Pits
After Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are most expensive money pits.

BMW reliablity just about the same..
They all money pit when it broke down..... Easy choice don't buy it on the first place. My people buy because of EGO. My family own them but I will never buy it with my own money.
Range Rover is way up on that list, perhaps even the top of the list, the people that I've known that had them got rid of them within a year or two....I used to say the new Ranger Rovers only really have two destinations...1) is the gas station 2) is the repair shop.

I have a e350 2014 ... love the way it drives .. the quality of build seems great. It’s reliable enough. It is used as a taxi in Germany for a reason. The reliability depends on what you buy. Certain Mercedes are much more high maintenance and more prone to have issues than the basic e class. BMW I feel have more issues overall and a little cheaper quality
Both bout same cheap however people don't realize bmw is speed performance and Mercedes is flossy Luxury that's why bmw gets a bad rap for being less realizable, even Scotty said the faster you drive the faster it wears down

It's all part of the fun of owning a German car. 'Will my car cost me $3k in repairs this year? Let's roll the dice!'
I had a Mercedes from new and the timing chain snapped at 67k km. Destroyed the engine and required a complete rebuild. My employer had a Mercedes where the transmission failed (rebuild required) within 50k km. Another person I know is into BMWs, and has had a string of failed window motors and even a head gasket blow at 70k km.
Germans started chasing the cheap end of the market in the mid 1990s, and it really shows.
CatsMeowPaw you’re supposed to replace the serpentine belt on your Mercedes at right around that interval of mileage if you take it to the dealership for regular and recommended maintenance. If you lose/break a serpentine belt driving you will damage most parts and most people will burn up their power steering or burn the heads etc. in the engine up. It’s not called a ‘timing chain’ not in any country, I maintain my Mercedes as the manufacturers recommend and have had no problems ever.
@@Hashdollars he blew the timing chain. Several MB models over the years (over a span of 4 decades actually) are known to do this, the chain drives the camshafts and results in total engine destruction. Engine codes M272, M273, M171, and M102 have all been known to have timing chain drive issues, and engine codes M116, M117, and M110 require routine timing chain replacement.

I was thinking about getting a newer model for daily driving, but I got a brand new VW instead. I might get a W222 S-Class when the values on those plummet just because I miss having an S-Class. I work on my own cars, and right now the cost of the tools I'd need to make the jump to a newer MB model is prohibitive.
Alex Cabral start with a C-Class a few years older, you can get a low mile model for relatively cheap depending on the budget and their bulletproof built to compete with Honda’s and Toyota’s! Nothing like a Benz
Thanks Scotty I was thinking of buying a second hand 1 what would you recommend second-hand estate
Hey Scotty, I bought a 2008 bmw 528xi with 109000 miles and got a extended warranty that took care of 3 expensive things to fix and it’s been a great car and dependable to this day. The car now has 177000 miles, mind ya I do have some front end work todo but that’s expected. My question is, I want to get a 535i with drive but a newer model. What year do you suggest to me to buy
Rev up your dip-stickless engines...assuming it has enough oil.
hahahaha
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@Soldado de Juan José Torres there is a menu option in the instrument cluster
@Soldado de Juan José Torres scotty made a video years ago tearing into bmw for doing this. He said, what's next? Welding the hood shut so you can't even get to the engine at all?
What I learned is if you fix the car yourself and do basic things like oil change, transmission fluid, spark plugs, suspension, and ignition coils, they're really not that expensive to maintain
nailed it. exactly what i’ve been saying
So basically become a mechanic. Good job Einstein.
@@neilr603nah I did boat maintenance in the navy it’s really not hard to follow instructions on paper
@@neilr603Not really bro coils/plugs are made easy to change on most 3 series cus theyre inline 6’s those parts sit at the very top of the engine. Bottom line is if you cant work on a bmw yourself you shouldnt be owning one.
thank you so much for making this video
I’ve got a 97 w210 e420. Thing has run smooth since day one. As long as you take care of your car it’ll be fine. Still runs good at 175k mikes
Yeah that's when it was made in Germany he talking about the cars that are made in the US now they are full of plastic do not get it
After owning a few BMW's, I wouldn't even lease one. Something is ALWAYS breaking on them, and even if it's covered under warranty, I got real tired of having my car in the shop all the time. My neighbors couldn't even tell you what car I drove because there was a loaner in the driveway more than half the time. No thank you -- DONE with BMW!
Tom Fortin which model? My X3 has been super reliable and fun to drive.
@@robertbruce5213 Two 3-Series, and an X1. We had a 525 and it was good, but uncomfortable for my broken back.
A friend of mine here in Phoenix got a new 535 about 6 yrs ago, there were so many early service problems, the dealership in midtown ran out of loaners frequently so they were sending people home in used loaner cars & my buddy end up one weekend with a lime green Chrysler PT Cruiser with the fake wood on the sides (LMAO) and of course we all spent Saturday & Sunday congratulated him on his "new" car and being rid of the BMW service nightmares once & for all.
Buy Lexus .GSF or RC F track edition.
@@billolsen4360 LOL! Yup, that's what I'm talking about and now I know I'm not the only one!
Scotty, love your highly informative and educational videos! You are fantastic!
Got a diesel Mercedes GLK250, been amazing, super fun to drive and have had no issues. Only problem was a DEF heater wasn’t working and threw an engine code! But I found a good mechanic who just re energized the part for free after he did an oil change and voila! No engine light or issues ever since. These cars are great as long as regular upkeep is happening and maintenance is done. You can find any old car that’s been mistreated with tons of problems beyond the German brands.
Oh man I just love you and the way you talk like if I'm seeing mechanic captain Jack sparrow in front of me 👌😂
BMW is definitely the WORSE. I have loved these cars for so long and got one and realized you have to love them from a distance!!!
B-in-law had a ..530? yea, by 40k it was gone. so long...
I own a 2002 bmw e46 320i, have no complaints and i fix it myselfe, also the car mechanics here where i live dont ask much money for fixing bmws
I had a 94 year 2.0 litre 3 series coupe, super reliable!
Im with you on this one
they're not for peasants with no money
The title should be "BMW VS Mercedes- which is worst?"
Worse*
y a you
MrGumbwit no where near, mechanic shops pass on bmws mercedes issues are more straight forward, like comfort switches and electronic suspension
Thanks Scotty for your amazing videos! I own a 2015 C250 coupe with close to 60k miles on it. With what mileage would you say to get rid of it? Thank God I've never had any issues with it thus far?
Honestly he would probably tell you to trade it in for a Toyota or a Lexus. A Lexus is a Toyota.
Thank you Scott.
I had e39 bmw 530i with 100k miles and never had issues and now i have e90 328i with 60k miles so far no issues.
I have a honda civic ex with more than 200k miles with no issues. We'll see how your car is doing by the time you catch up. 😂
the 6 cylinder engines are the best in bmw
Same I got a 2011 328i got it 60k miles, so far at 87k and no problems.
Rob xdrive?
Be fair Latest early 2000s BMWs with manuals are great cars. Used to know a guy with a 2008 BMW 3 series 6 speed manual. Dude was super up to date on his maintenance but has 250k miles on his and its still going strong.
depends on if that is a 328 or a 335... the 328 is way more reliable than the 2008 335
You sir are a true legend. Love your videos!
Cool. Thanks a ton.
Had a 1972 BMW 2002, loved that car! Solid and simple ❤️
Bullet proof car!
I’ve got dizzy watching his hands, damn.
Yeah. They say BMW owners can't handle his hand movement
@@PrimeRunner_1 LOL
He speaks with his hands more than with his mouth
lol
He's steering around a corner whether awake or asleep
Great advice scotty... Well said
“Maybe working on those things all the time has affected his mind”. 😂
Exactly
Mr. Kilmer, thank you so much for your honesty in all of your videos. There are very few mechanics I've found to be trustworthy, but you sir, are one of them!
Love your vids and your wealth of information! Looking forward to many more!
carlosnvlr eh, he’s a Lexus fanboy I think 🤷♂️
BMW’s are gonna be more than a corolla to maintain but they may not be as bad as he makes them sound 🤔
@@Luminary2024 yer he talks much bullshit.
Which is more expensive? 😂
Both carmakers screwing people with overpriced cars. The same another few car makers.
My point was: you can buy today cars with almost the same quality, good design, technical characteristics like these 2 makers for much less price.
Expensive? In Europe we got S- class, 7er taxis
car prices, you can live with, overpriced car parts? that's the killer.
Perfect explication !!
Bought a 428i 2 years ago at a dealership certified. Still going strong.
I maintain it well and it does its job.
How to save money?
walk everywhere 😂
Get a Dirtbike
You'll lose weight also. So it's a win-win.
get a bicycle
Time is more valuable than money.
Best comm
So agree with Scotty on this one, as an Insurance Adjuster for over a decade I Have noticed same pattern on both manufacturers.
I like that you dont use prophanity or blaspheme in your videos, may God bless you
You were bang on here!
Owned several Mercedes and never had a problem! For the last 10 years i own a w221 S500 4matic, changing the oil every 6000 km, use good gas, service the 7g tronic every 3 years or 30k km.. drives like a dream! Few days ago had a 500km trip, pure pleasure! Only thing i need to do now is change few bushings 😁 maintain your car and drive it with pleasure guys! Cheers!
Just bought a one owner 2008 328xi with 80k miles on it with full service history all done at the dealer For $7600, and i couldn't be happier. Let's see what it costs me to keep her running smooth. Car rides like new and handles like a dream.
I like how everyone who owns mercs or BMW and has no big problematical experiences, NOBODY replies and just scrolls right past 😂😂😂😭
Most ppl don’t even know Bmw and merc have their OWN oil and tranny fluid. Ppl are using 87-89 gas and Cheap autozone oil and say they aren’t reliable 😂😂😂😭
Loving the fast depreciation on such good cars because of the next mans incompetence
Same here....I owned 4 Mercedes and have never been stranded aside from a flat tire. Which in my book doesn't count.
Agreed with you on that. I'm in Europe, and Mercs are the most reliable I've ever driven. I guess what they get in the US differs from what we get here.
Gorgeous car -- I had a W221 as well, black on black. Outstanding car. Nothing quite like an S-class.
Europeans cars that are made in usa! You miss that! Please be clear
European cars that were made in the Southern USA. Please be clear about that! lol. Mercedes is assemble in ALABAMA!!! How is it possible that those cars even work at all?
Got a BMW 7 series in 2004, now in 2019 and never got a single major issue
😮😮 wow

It's a misconception honestly, some people don't even maintain their european vehicles well. I leased a 2016 Infiniti Q50 and the Infotainment system kept freezing up, and the ride quality wasn't even that good.
Right lol
Hey Scotty ... love all your videos mate ... I have a 4 year old Toyota Corolla hatch (bought new) and it’s reliable and economical ... so happy to hear of your big ✔️ with Toyota .. love the humour you put into your videos 🇦🇺🏄🏽♂️💦
I really really love my BMW.. It makes my day just driving that thing to and from work... Whatever else I drive I feel so happy when I get "back home".. That alone is (almost) priceless..
Probably feeling happy when the BMW gets back home from the mechanic
Just lease them.
@@Super6-Four sure do :-)
@@apt62 I'm personally fond of onwning my car .. and keeping them for many many many years.. I have it the same way with other stuff like computers, my phone and so on.. I get attached ... But I really do understand why people consider leasing .. Having not to haggle with a dealer is a very big plus for a start (not to mention not having to worry about residual value of your trade in car)..
That's because you probably haven't hit close to 100,000 kms mileage yet. When you do, the repairs will be "priceless"(as in endless money pit). Enjoy while you dare!
you either love it or you hate it. I have had a E92 and now F32, if you're handy it doesnt cost that much to fix them. But if not them budget 1200-1800 a year on repairs, if the repair cost didnt come this year it will come next year. just 1.5 or 2x this cost as you move up the series lol.
Alot of the problems are easy DIYs. There are way more DIY guides for BMW compare to Mercedes.
Is it expensive to maintain? Yes compare to Toyotas, which 500$ repair will run you like 4 years. But it doesnt drive like a toyota, if you only want a car to commute then stick to toyotas.
My dad is a mechanic and all mechanic have the same problem, because you enjoyed every customer's cars you just want to stick to the least problematic one yourself.
Agreed with you. Well said.
Scotty my congratulations... 3million subs!!🎉🎈🎈🎈
