Could you make a video on what’s the best first car
I need some ideas 👍🏻
I actually love the vehicle. When I was a member of BMWCCA I would get all my helpful service hints from the club magazine which likely is all virtual now. I might still have the service books which set me back I think 700 dollars. The books are expensive. The wiring harness connector in the door jamb is best cleaned and dielectric grease applied. I would replace the water pump and radiator right away unless it was replaced recently. And timing belt, tensioner to, unless the cam is on a chain.
grandson knows what a good car is. I would tell him to fix it properly. Restored car to mint condition could have a really high value.
Hi Mr Scotty , I have a 2021 Royal Enfield Bullet 350 efi (kick start) model motorcycle. It is a very good bike. But on 2 occasions , My motorcycle stops for no reason as if it is running out of fuel , in a full tank of Gas. And once after a long 15 km ride , I went to have a cup of coffee for 5 min and then tried to kick start my bike but did not start for 5-8 kicks. Then suddenly it starts on the 9th kick. Please help me find a solution for this. Desperately need your help.
Thank you.
OMG! a BMW whose engine isn't made out of plastic.
Scotty, your grandson is actually very smart he has a grandpa that knows how to fix older cars.
Lol facts big brain move
Older cars are easier to fix because (1) their design is simpler to understand, (2) the engine bay isn't as cluttered and (3) lots of people have made UA-cam videos about how to fix their common problems.
He knows whatever goes wrong, that you will fix it.
That's exactly why he bought it
@@kingpen3254 Smart, takes after his grandfather.

Oh that cracked me up dude that was hilarious
Oh its just going to happen
E30 is officially Scotty Approved.
Well, Scotty is dumb enough to believe the New BMWs are still bad. B48 and B58 engines are two of the top 5 best engines out.
@@aarongrisham5555 he has said the engines are good but, modern bmws are expensive to maintain bc there electronics break and are hard to replace.

Only with low mileage though
My '95 M3 needed a new fuel pump. The dealer wanted $700. Turns out BMW buys its fuel pumps from VDO. I got a VDO pump for $148 and put it in myself - took half an hour.
lol well played brother.
I know. They are so easy to repair. Take off put on. Never understood why the dealerships and repair shops charge $85 an hour!!
FCP Euro?
Yeah the E46 has that convenient fuel pump hatch under the seats. I saw an independent BMW service guy swap one out in about 4 mins.

With an old car, you might get a bad deal.
With a new car, you will get a bad deal.
Normally I would agree…maybe not so much in this current market lol
100 % true!!!
My trick is I get slightly used cars ( around 2-3 years old with under 30k miles). They tend to drop about 40% in price and if kept for just a Few years and sold again you tend to loose only about 10%. However My last car I did this too I bought for 29k and sold for 31k after 4 years of owning it, so can’t complain with that.
😂
These are becoming highly collectable here in Germany, now. You cannot find a nice one under 20k anymore
Same in South Africa, nice ones go for premium prices now. Even ratty ones are pricey.
Same with Canada
Time to buy E36's
Il drive mine to germany from UK for 20k euro😂
Not only Germany in most parts of the world the E30 is becoming rare and highly sought after and the values are reflected in that.
You know this guy secretly loves BMW. I just know it.
He got one hell of a deal
He could probably put it on Bring A Trailer and get a lot more than $1500 for it.
I’m assuming there’s a reason why he didn’t put the top up, sometimes the cost of replacing tops cost more than the car is worth. He also said it needed a fuel pump so it probably didn’t run when he bought it.
We got it Scotty. You’re disowning all your grandchildren who don’t buy a stock Toyota😂
I'd just take em to the woodshed!
@@MisterMikeTexas I heard my step dad when I read this lol
Rip to his kids and grandkids.
That’s right It gotta be as stock toyota prefferably an ol celica or corolla, an ol camry will get you onboard
They keep buying crap😂
Had a 1974 BMW 525, when I was stationed in Germany. That's a very smooth running straight 6.
I admire him for his willingness to drive an older car. That says a lot for his character. Many kids his age would not want to drive a vehicle that old. Says a lot about his parents too.
I said that to my son he just bought a E36 bmw 5 speed its fun! New is not the same... Just like a fine wine gets better in time 🤗
Influence of his granpa for sure ;)
Arguably, these older BMW’s are still classy. Wouldn’t mind one myself.
he can easily w/ time be into new cars.
I’m 20 and I’d love a car like that.

I would buy another E30 in a heartbeat. Those are a ball to drive. Anything past E46/E39, no. Just no
Lucky sumbitch. Someday I’ll have one of my own
Scotty I wish I could run across a deal like that one lucky young man.
The way you do it is: Always be looking for deals (not just when you need a car), and everything (that you own) is always for sale.
I had 91" 535i with that straight 6 and a 5 speed manual... over 350K miles all I did was change the oil like a Toyota, that would never happen today!
Needs the valves adjusted. If only he knew a good mechanic that could show him. LOL.
That's why Scotty wants to disown him lol! (Get it ?)
No need valve adjustment . Is hidraulic tapet . Scotty thinks is american shitty car .
M20 engine (E30) never had hydraulic lifters. These engines can be valve adjusted.
@@T4R3dneck Neither did the 'Bix Six' (M30). Solid lifters.
Scotty:
Also scotty: He shoulda got a celica but hey, this isn’t bad!
I totally agree!
Celica convertible would have been better, but hey! What's 1500 bucks?
A mazda miata would be better
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You poor souls. Kinda hard to top these cars. Do yourself a favor and go find out why these cars are so iconic.
The old ones are beautiful cars. I miss my '98 328i.
A real man can admit his age. I am so happy for you your grandson is featured in this video, I am hope full that he has a safer journey because he learns from the best! Please keep doing what you do best!
That's alright Scotty, i bought a 1994 Celica and restored it, you can claim me as your new son.

You can keep the Celica , I'll keep the M3. M3s are indestructible.
@@stuchbrosmnore8627 Yeah Right....LMAO
The blower motor in my car made a sound similar to that ever since I bought it. I took it out to clean and inspect it, and found a little bolt that was vibrating in the plastic fan blades. Cleaned it up, and runs like new. 👊🤓👍

Scotty has disowned so many family members 😂
That laugh when he said didn't he didn't fix the ding at the trunk got me
I had a 1985 BMW with a straight-six in it and that thing ran like a champ
My wife's 91 318 drove for 270k miles before we sold it. It drove like it had half the miles.
Been following Scotty for some time now and I just love the fun way he gives us the basic information we need when making one of the most important decisions related to a car.
90s BMWs were great too.
When I was born (in 2005) my dad had a 1986 BMW 535i. It was rusty as heck (being in Michigan), and was super loud, but it was awesome. He got rid of it in 2007 because he couldn't drive it in the winter (RWD, and he couldn't even get up our driveway, which was not steep), and got a 2000 Honda Civic DX Coupe. Fun times with the BMW, I wish he still had it. he LOVED that thing. My mom, in 2005, got a brand new Hyundai Tuscon. The car I was driven home from the hospital in. I guess that's where my deep hate for Korean cars comes from... but before that, she had a 1985 Audi 5000. A much better car.
My Dad had a 1985 BMW 325e 5 speed and he loved that thing he owned it from 1987 to 1999 though he did say everything was metric and it took a weird battery and back in the 90s when he owned it he said only the dealership and Sears sold the battery dealership wanted over $500 in 1990's money whereas Sears only wanted $50 lol
I think the most annoying thing about my father's 1988 model 525e is the weird battery. Dad called the automobile association to investigate the crook battery, and the patrol sold him a new one on the spot for just over AUD$500. In my 1999 Camry, I keep using the OEM model Century which has a list price of $200 but can sometimes be bought cheaper because most auto parts shops stock it. 7 years lifespan every time.
The reason the battery is in the back right is to offset the weight of the driver. All 4 cylinder models have the battery under the hood on the passenger side, all 6 cylinder models have it in the rear right corner. And there are all kinds of different batteries that will fit back there.
Used to have BMW convertible just like that but red with the inline 6. Had it for years.
When BMW made reliable cars, how far they have fallen.
Meanwhile now you can buy a 2011 535i for 5k at 100k miles, put a stage 1 tune on it, and get 510 to the wheels. I have my Altima for daily driving, I have the bimmer for good times.
Congratulations ! It sounds great.
Evening Scotty, Nice too see you😌
evening!
Love you. You make learning about cars so fun
He knew he had an ace in the hole with Grandpa Scotty as his go to mechanic.
Finally a proper son. Your grandson will have to start his own UA-cam channel where he preaches BMW.
Tbh he needs to join the bmw crew

U coming out for pride month?? Lmfaooo
Once again, RESPECT to you, Scotty, for not being a brand snob and telling like it is. People may think you hate BMWs and Toyotas are the only cars you prefer, but this is a perfect example that a good car is a good car and time/period is more of a factor in how the car is built than the brand. The E30 series is a true classic!
Scotty has a religious zeal against snobbery in all of its forms. He keeps his mind on the primary purpose of a motor vehicle, which is to move people & things. Breakdowns ruin the functionality. Having fun while driving is a bonus. Paying top dollar for a car in which to pose is a foreign concept to Scotty.
We've got an '87 325ic (5 speed manual) that my husband bought new. The dealer went to Germany, bought it there (drove it on the Autobahn) and had it shipped over. It's been a good car. I've started driving it again recently and remember how much fun it is to drive a manual.
I had an 04 7 series with a 5 speed stick! It was a ROCKET. AND an amazing smooth driver.
The M20 is one of the best engines....
With good care they have out lived many bmw 6 cylinder engines or even other car models...one of the most thing that destroys them is people who use these engines for spinning...if it wasn't for that.... its way more solid than any engines ever built...
M10 is
@CT is infant grade content now the earlier ones where indeed, but they where improved overtime and bmw fixxed those issues overtime. The best 6 cilinder is the m30b35 in the 1986 - -1992 bmw E32 735i 7 serie

@@AMSUDZ On that note you are definitely right...
That WAS a good period for BMW. One of their best.
Agree had s 318i super good car.

Thank you!!
I had an 87. Great car. However they do have abs brakes. One of the first cars with abs back in the day.
I have this same bmw and it’s been sitting in my garage for years! Lol the price just went up 20k thank you Scotty!
Thank you for the video
Kudos to your grandson! What a smart kid! Nice find!
The engine has METAL covers. Intake - metal. Components: metal. Hoses - rubber. Unlike the plastic BMWs engine compartments of today.
The E30 is METAL : )
Sometimes plastic is a better material than metal
@@user-rd5nc1nb9f Not for intake manifolds, coolant components, and any other components subjected to constant temperature and stress variations - especially in fluids such as cooling fluid. If that were the case then plastic would've been used for brake lines, exhaust manifolds, wheels, etc. Plastic is a cost-cutting move. Planned obsolescence. No more, no less.
Pre 2000's BMW's weren't bad as far as reliability goes.
I'd even go as far as to say that pre 2010 era BMW aren't bad as reliability goes. I own an E46 (1999-2006) and they're notorious for being one of the last well built BMWs. The motor is butter smooth, and I haven't had an issue I didn't fix myself since owning the car - yet (knock on wood). As soon as they ditched the straight 6 for their little turbocharged 4 cylinders, is when I'd draw the line.

There are certainly relatively reliable BMWs.
relatively = weasel word
Relatively……not good enough
Unfortunately, I cannot say they are certainly reliable but there are better built ones.
Yes, the old ones like this.
@CT is infant grade content now have you ever owned an old bm? Honest question. They’re reliable as anything. Depending on where you live any car will rot. Pre 2000 bmws are built like tanks, they’re simple to work on and their parts are cheap as chips.
Best complimentary Scotty video on BMW EVER!
Great video!
I had an '86 325. Loved it but a rear axle broke at 420,000 kms. That was the point of no return even though the engine was still good to go. Fun to drive though.
Nice. I got an '84 533i up to 500K miles. Punted it in 2011.
It seems like your grandchildren don’t want an inheritance
I think , I heard the car’s tires were the ones that were on it when he bought it. If that is true those tires are not safe to drive on. They are dried out and will blow out , especially at speed.

WTF, just yesterday I was asking if the Beamers and Benzos where good reliable quality vehicles back in the 80s!... I guess you just answered my question with this video!
Got two 1988 E34s with the M20 engine in the video, can confirm those are solid, and few things run as long as a old classic MB diesel
Your grandson failed you more than i failed my mom, finaly a worthy opponent !
This is the only time i seen scotty
Genuinely happy about a car 🤷🏻♂️😂
That is a BMW anyone can work on. Don’t forget the timing belt which is an easy job for Scotty. I was a BMW enthusiast for these E30s starting at sixteen back in 1998 when I got my first one. That enthusiasm for BMW stopped around 2012 with all the planed obsolescence BMW engineered into their vehicles. I was able to regain the enthusiasm by going back 3 decades and picking up an old reliable BMW with the M30 straight six. They really did know how to make them in Deutschland back then.
Hey Scotty. Every time I watch your videos your enthusiasm makes me smile and laugh sometimes.
Also, I’m buying a Toyota GR Yaris in Australia and planning on keeping it for as long as I possibly can. Is it a good buy? I think it’s good because it shares some engineering from the original 2JZ engine which should make it reliable and solid.
My 328i outlasted every Ford I've ever had put together. Depends on how you take care of them
@CT is infant grade content now Do you own one to confirm it? My girlfriends E30 M3 has over 200k on the clock and is still running fine like a civic 😂
Depending on which Ford it outlasts.
While other Fords such as the Crown Victoria lasting miles and miles.
