I had e350 2010 bought it 000 km and now it has almost 400k km and still no repairs, maintenance is important and simple But when u come to buy a used one, its gamble you don’t know how the previous owner took care of it
@Andy B usually who has the capital to buy a car of 100k or more (except for the purchase under leasing), buys the car new, and uses it for 4 to 5 years when the car has not yet devalued a lot, ending up selling it and buying another new one. Without suffering the heavy maintenance that starts to appear on the car.
@bagariddum these new cars have too much sensors and emissions stuff that can go bad. And full of plastic stuff. That's why the used market seems to getting full of "old new cars".
@@RogerM88 you do realize that after 5 years those things are pretty much worthless right. They're just status symbols and the people that buy them can afford to trade up every year or so.
@@RCproject18 5 years worthless? I'm talking about the "typical" people that buys the car new, out of the showroom. People that change the car every year, usually use leasing.
Only buy a Mercedes if you love to drive, love automotive perfection, can afford one, and can afford the repairs. They are some of the best cars on the road, don’t require more maintenance than most cars, and are reliable if maintained properly. When work needs to be done, it’s going to cost more than a typical car, but if you can afford it, it’s worth it.
Totally agree. I work on my own Mercedes and it's quite rewarding and saves me loads of money by doing it myself. Whenever you do a minor service, do something extra like flush the brake fluid etc.
100% in agreement. And frankly, if you build a relationship with an independent German automotive expert, maintenance costs the same as any Toyota/Lexus or Nissan/Infiniti because I’ve owned them all. And Mercedes-Benz is still the best. Lexus IS close but just is not the same...
I’m German, and even I know German car’s are junk. The Japanese car’s are much cheaper, and 10 times more reliable. “ German engineering” is just marketing, for the rest of the world outside of Germany 🤫🤫🤫 😄
@@trayvonjackson4830 i have heard, that in Germany many people was riding their legendary old cars with million-kilometers engines, till new eco laws was commited. Planed obsolense curse is real tradegy.
Vlkn Grt Interesting. Do you know why that is? I assumed that no matter where they sell Hondas (or Toyotas), they are generally reliable cars. What seems to be the issue with Hondas in Turkey?
I’ve had 3 and no problems. A 2000 C230k , a 2012 Glk 350 and a 2012 C300. I’ve never had a bit of trouble with any of them. I have them serviced at a place called Star Mercedes in Charleston, SC. I do the scheduled maintenance on time, every time. One had 200k , one 90k and now 80k in the latest. Never once had an issue.
No issues because you money pit in servicing and maintenance that's the down side for these over engineered parts in the a car that you don't need. Eg; Japanese car
I really like this advice more than just calling them 'endless money pits'. I appreciate the cautious advice and properly explaining to people that Mercedes are complex and usually not cheap to maintain so you have to be prepared. Keep up the good work Scotty.
@@denysivanov3364 pml ya right you mean they are built to break, the dealership dont make any money on new car sales just on services and repairs and at $220 an hour they are all multi millionaires
@@terrysadlier8456 I think mercedes and MB dealer make most of the money when they sale the car. They are not 20k cars. PS: they are made to drive like a dream. My father had w221 S500 in 2011. That was fantastic car and he was very happy. Very good comfort, especially for long trips which he did all the time.
@@denysivanov3364 ya they are good cars when they are under warranty because as soon as they aren't you are in a world of hurt with the extortionate amounts it costs to replace plastic parts. I learned this lesson the hard way. The 2nd happiest day of my life was buying a Mercedes. The happiest was day of my life was when I sold it for half of what I paid for it!
The Lexus is a very good car I can’t complain I’ve had a couple of them but they’re not a Mercedes-Benz. And I know people are going to say they hate Mercedes really hate this really hate that but Mercedes build a damn good car. As does Lexus.
Love how he's not saying anything bad about the engines or transmissions.... they're known to make good engines and transmissions. It's the electronics and suspension that are the vehicles weaknesses
I’ve bought two Mercedes Benz and they have been good to me. Started with a C300 and I totaled it. Nothing happened to my family and I, well built vehicle so I bought another one a CLS550. If you maintain it like it’s supposed to be it will last a long time without any problems. Just like any car would. Don’t buy it if you can’t keep up with the maintenance and premium fuel.
I’ve owned many mercedes and they have been reliable and durable...however, maintenance is complex and more expensive. You need a good independent Mercedes specialist. They’re out there, you’ve really got to find a good one.

I am on my second Mercedes E-Class and I just love them. The first was a 1998 E280 (W210 chasis) Bought it with 80K miles on the clock, I had it for 9 years. The one I have now is a 2006 E280 (W211 Facelift ), bought it with 75K on the clock for £4,300. I am just moving into my 3rd year with it and it is such a lot of fun to drive. Both have been very reliable. The only things I have had to fix are is the MAF sensor on the first car and the MAF sensor and Solenoids on the second car. Both easy DIY jobs. + some suspension bushes on the second car that I got an Indie garage to sort out.
I got my 2008 c350 a year ago when I was 16 and it’s got 200k miles. Love it. All I’ve done is regular maintenance and it really does drive like a dream.

My mom drives a 2006 mercedes e class (w211, 220cdi) and it currently has just shy over 400000 miles on it and was dead reliable so far. She owned since it had 12000 miles on it and it never let her stranded. Same story with my brother‘s 2005 w211, which has about 250000 miles on the clock. I mean sure you have to do basic maintenance things like breaks and stuff, but you might as well go to an independent dealer ones your warranty expires, since there are no collector cars and if you have a good mechanic or do the work yourself, they aren’t expensive to own. One tip for all of you looking to buy a mid 2000s mercedes: don’t choose the airmatic suspension or the abc suspension, as these kinds of suspensions all get weak not because of the mileage, but because of the age and it is expensive to maintain these systems cost effectively, that’s where scotty is right. Ah, yeah I‘m from Germany so the situation in the us might be different.
Schwarzenwein in Europe their pretty good cars it’s just in America the way they are assembled . Plus they have the import all the parts from Germany so it’s more expensive. If I lived in Europe I’d probably be speeding down the highway in a bmw or audi
My Eclass taxi w212 has 500,000km and runs like new .Automatic transmission no problem engine nothing serious Lets hope will continue like that Made in Germany
tasos vougiatzis Awesome! I have 2 w212 e350's. Ones a 2013 and the other is a 2010. I first bought a BMW because I have a few BMW's from the 80's and they're great cars, the engines are bulletproof. So I decided to buy a 2013 BMW 328i coupe with the 6 cylinder. 2 weeks after owning it the thing already wouldn't start LOL. Took it to the dealer and it needed $3,000 worth of work right out of the gate. Oil was leaking into the wiring harness causing everything to short out. To make a long story short, I canceled the finance deal and gave the car back to the dealer and bought a 2013 Mercedes e350. It's been a great car so far, 85,000 miles trouble free. You can tell just by the interior and the way the car feels it's much higher quality than the BMW. So then I ran across a deal on a 2010 e350 with only 35,000 miles that was highly optioned with the AMG package so I scooped that up as well. Moral of the story, New BMW's are garbage. I heard some rumors from the inside that BMW is actually wanting to sell off the company because the family that owns it doesn't want to deal with it anymore. Hopefully whatever company buys it will turn it around because right now, Mercedes is walking all over them in terms of quality.
I own a MB SL55 AMG (2003/580 bhp) for years now, when you give it attention and regular service by a qualified engineer, you can drive it for years without problems. I use it only in weekends and for road-trips. For daily use I have a MB E300 diesel (2017).
A friend of a friend's father was driving his daughter's Mercedes while she was out of town. Every time he started the car there was some type of warning message. He didn't know what it was and ignored it as the car still worked fine. After a number of these messages the car would no longer start. He ended up having to tow it to the dealership. Problem - the warning message was about changing the oil, and once the predetermined mileage had registered, the engine automatically shut down. Crazy. Time to build basic cars at reasonable prices for the masses. Think of the resources and energy wasted manufacturing all this crap.
@The Legend of Texas Why would you buy an old benz when you get just get a modern Lexus? Old Benz was a great car for it's time but its safety and speed is not suitable for modern roads unless you don't care too much about your life.

It's not that bad, I own a CLS 500, do my own maintenence, recently changed the SBC pump (used) for 300 euros, more or less the same in dollars, I have my own diagnostics tool, was like 400 bucks. Definitely more difficult to work on then some other brands, but not as crazy as you make it sound. If you are mechanically inclined and know how to use google, find cheaper parts than it's really not that bad. CLS drives like dream, feels very luxurious, and when you put your foot down, it's all smiles. Can't get that on an old Toyota, in fact, I've driven many old Toyotas, and to be fair, it feels like driving a trashcan.

I think as long as you take good care of it, it will last a lot longer. I owned 06 CLK350, over 110k miles. The only issue I had was bad secondary air pump. It popped up checking engine light and failed the stupid emission test. I spent 250 dollars to change a new OEM one. I still think it is a good car. Extremely smooth and quiet ride.

I've been to the factory in Graz Austria where the G-Wagon is built. When you see some of the level of detail involved in it's design then you can begin to appreciate the cost. The frame was sealed and pressurized with a rust preservative, and then rotated/tilted on a large fixture to ensure the preservative/wax reached every nook and cranny.
I've been driving Mercedes for 8 years now, and I completely agree with the video, even though used Mercedes are cheap, common people shouldn't buy Mercedes. In whatever form, beauty never comes cheap. If you are not willing to pay heavily for beauty, then own a regular instead. Know yourself, don't pretend to be something you are not.

Yeah sure I work for AAA and to do something as simple as changing a battery requires a 1000 dollar tool. Changing a tire make sure you the "extra set of lug nuts". They are easy to break into though.
Yes I know what I am doing these are very simple things on regular cars that are difficult for mercedes. So you know how to change the battery on a late model mercedes? Or how to replace the tires? You need a damn proprietary for all that $hit. Thats why AAA won't service them.
@@BloodlineMedia Isn't that simple the computer/s have to be reprogrammed every time you replace a battery. You also have to know the power output, capacity and how much charge that new battery can accept.. They also have to be reprogrammed when the tires are changed. @@BloodlineMedia It's simply not cost effective to waste 1000 dollars on a programming tool (keep on mind other german brands will want you to use their programming tool for their cars) and you make the same amount of money as you would from a regular car. That's just the simple stuff that everyone should be able to do, but won't because it is a German car. I could just imagine what one would have to go through to replace an altenator or pump or god forbid an electronics problem. The only issue that recently occured was a fault in the parking sensors. But over my 5 year ownership i cannot complain. It all comes down to how you look after your car. If you want a mercedes go for it, just find a well looked after and maintained example.

Always fun to watch your videos. If nothing else, you make me laugh a little. I had a 15 years old E200 until September last year. And trust me it drove like a dream. 90,000 on the clock when I bought it and 150,000 when I sold it. No issues, just regular service and maintenance and that's that. Besides, tell me which car has no issues, 15 years or newer?
so true Scotty, I have 2014 mb sprinter, endless problems. I have 80k miles on it, water pump just went. I service it a local mb dealership because no one else can fix it. Really poor quality with high sticker price. Now mb offers 100k miles factory warranty on new mb sprinters van because they know its faulty vehicle. I always say '' if something comes with warranty it's meant to break down".
I believe it shares a lot of parts with the ram pro master. It’s the same van. Not sure if your in the USA. So not sure if it’s diesel but if it is any diesel will have higher ownership cost.
Brake system on that is called Sensotronic Brake Control. Or SBC. It does have to be deactivated and reactivated when servicing any brake component. The system is made to prime the brakes if someone say, opens a door, or touches the pedal at all. It’ll put 100bar or pressure the the caliper for just a brief second to test the system. If the calipers of off and sitting open on the vehicle with no pad or rotor it’ll blow a piston out. With the struts, don’t have to be replaced in pairs. When you replace them it’s a good idea to have a level calibration done when an alignment is done. But even that isn’t generally needed. Mercedes Benz are great vehicles, and it does take some extensive training to repair these vehicles and know best practices.
Had a 2005 E500 4matic AWD. Loved the car, and that v8 ran great, and it was absolutely loaded with features including navigation, massaging heated and cooled seats, etc... but after about 9 years something happened with the computer and alternator and the entire electrical system got fried...turning into an $8,000 electrical work nightmare.
I agree with everything Scotty said, but this is more towards the V8 and higher classes. A C300 is reliable, and not so hard to work on. They’ve also perfected the V6, along with their solid 7g transmission.
I disagree with you Scotty!! I have owned Mercedes since the early 90's, never had any problems with them! Depends on which car, like the S class, yes it can have problems, airbag suspension, etc! I have always bought the c class and e, best cars ever!! My last Mercedes was a 2009 e350, 241k miles, not one problem, not one check engine light! If you put premium gas and full synthetic oil they will out last any American junk and Japanese! My father had a Mercedes with over 600k miles, no rust, original engine and transmission (no rebuilds), no major problems! Some people dont take care of their Mercedes right, so know who you are buying from when getting a used Mercedes! The best or nothing!! :)
So all we have to do is buy a Mercedes that doesn't have Senso- tronic brake control and/or Active Body Control...I've had four C and CLK 's and have never had to repair anything,,, just routine maintenance,,,very well engineered cars..actually can be economical to run, beautiful to drive and very safe as well. Thanks for keep the used car prices low Scotty.....Keep up the good work.
Same here Cs and MLs though... the only thing out of the norm that I had go out was the super charger on my Kompressor. Car was 15 years old though and due to have something major go wrong.
I've purchased four Mercedes cars over the years and I'm currently very happy with my 2005 e320. I take extremely good care of it and have never missed a scheduled service. At 145,000 miles it runs like a top. I love this car.
I own a mint condition 2002 s500 with barely over 100k, car has been garage kept and is a dream to drive. The trick to owning a Mercedes is having friends that are mechanics! These cars last over 300k and I think as long as the airmatic is in good condition it’s a good vehicle to pick up!
@@08fordfusi Warranty rarely lasts the length of ownership, especially on a Mercedes and is still a nuisance to be back and forth to the dealer with a broken car constantly.
For anyone who is interested: I have a Mercedes with the same engine. I have a 2011 E550. M273 V8 engine, but obviously revised and updated due to it being last year in the E class. I have close to 220,000 km/136,000 miles. Oil changes every 5,000 km. Yes, maintaining it is expensive because it's a Benz and everything costs more. Parts and oil are more expensive. But, it's been more reliable than my Acura MDX, my Mazda 3, and any other car I've had. Don't expect electronics to be perfect forever; my blindspot assist doesn't work, same with my automatic trunk closer being finicky etc. However, engine and transmission are solid. If maintained, they are bulletproof. Also, I'm on the original air suspension. Come at me.
Scotty, the rebuilt air shocks are super, and are a fraction of the OEM Air Shocks. My giant S550 4-MATIC is flawless and runs so well with 132000 miles. With 382 hp, and no turbo the car is super. BTW, I’m 74, in great health and K love the car. Oh yes, it was made in Stuttgart to. Dave in Phoenix Arizona USA.
How are you doing with the MB at Walmart after a year? Folks who have any serious work done on their German cars should insist that the indie mechanic has the right computer scan tools...Not OBDII readers!
Scotty !!! I took my bloody 2010 Mercedes to Mercedes in Melbourne, Australia. They charged me $375 PER HOUR !!! on the phone they said it is 3 hours charge, but when I arrived at their garage, it doubled to 6 hours. That's 6 x $375 Australian dollars !!! I think Mercedes is a mafia, not a car manufacturer/dealer.
Michael Smith should have researched before buying a Mercedes, it’s a foreign luxury car of course it’s gonna be expensive, that’s why Scotty Kilmer tells you not to buy one because when they get over 100,000 miles they have electrical glitches that may be simple, but is very expensive to fix. Other wise Mercedes Benz Engine and transmissions last very long time on par with Lexus, but Lexus has upper hand when it comes to electronics.

The problem is people buying old expensive cars, and then forget that the car needs maintenance of a expensive car.
Rog, old expensive cars cost more to maintain than new because more things are wearing out.
Lexus IS close but just is not the same...

tasos vougiatzis e350?
@@tylerfowler9271 e200
tasos vougiatzis Awesome!

Owning a Mercedes in Europe whilst still not cheap, is a lot cheaper and more available than in the US IME. I'm on my second C class, never had a lot of trouble.
Not built, but assembled in Stuttgart. Parts for it come from everywhere, even China or Slovenija 😀. Cheers from Slovenija 😀
So you're who I should blame for my oxygen sensor failing!
(Just kidding)
@@myblacklab7 No bro that part was certainly made in the US or UK :)
The one I looked at said MFG IN STUTTGART just like this video, except at the bottom of the same tag is said MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA...
"PLASTIC COVER CRAP"🤣
..and will come in carbon for a few extra thousands of dollars.
I honestly feel like they dont have that much plastics
@Brian Gonzalez it elimates alot of noise
Nice car (;
@@michaeldavidmontalvo2402 Thanks man. It is an oldie gas sipper.
If a car means to you... i just need to go from A to B dont buy it. If u are an auto enthusiat and your car is part of your life buy it. Every time i see my CL63AMG it puts a smile on my face...i enjoy every min of driving it. I go to car meets, car shows, met fellow enthusiast, took spirited drives together great convos etc..yes it cost but everyone has something they spend on.
Scotty is just an old mechanic. I have worked on Mercedes all my life and it doesn't look complicated as he portrays.
Yeah sure I work for AAA and to do something as simple as changing a battery requires a 1000 dollar tool. Changing a tire make sure you the "extra set of lug nuts". They are easy to break into though.
@@BloodlineMedia How many late model Mercedes have you worked on?
Yes I know what I am doing these are very simple things on regular cars that are difficult for mercedes. So you know how to change the battery on a late model mercedes? Or how to replace the tires? You need a damn proprietary for all that $hit. Thats why AAA won't service them.
@@BloodlineMedia Isn't that simple the computer/s have to be reprogrammed every time you replace a battery. You also have to know the power output, capacity and how much charge that new battery can accept.. They also have to be reprogrammed when the tires are changed. Things so simple have to be so complicated with these new german cars.
Also german cars use cheap material for parts that wear out fast and cost a lot just for the replacement.
Refreshing to see a mechanic so passionate about cars, Scotty was bouncing with excitement talking about it.
Yup, I noticed that too! He was pretty hyped up 😂
Could be in Turkish
He only gets revved up when it's bash-the-CLS time. When he was fixing the Lexus LS that one time he was very collected and never called it a gas hog despite it being a V8 too.
I bought a 13' C250 AMG-line in 2017 as the 2nd owner. Its now 2022 and the car has been faultless, i have driven it hard and went to its limits however she still runs like a dream. The only issue that recently occured was a fault in the parking sensors. But over my 5 year ownership i cannot complain. It all comes down to how you look after your car. If you want a mercedes go for it, just find a well looked after and maintained example.
I actually agree with you on all of this information. There is no doubt that they aren’t cheap, but I love them!
Adequately informative video about the complexities of automobile electronic systems. Admittedly, when one's Mercedes Benz is in the right hands, one has nothing to worry about. Thank you!
Got my 2012 c250 and I love it! It’s a little more expensive on the maintenance but it runs strong and it’s a daily commute! Best 1st car ever
I love my Mercedes-Benz ☑️
Do you love spending tons of cash maintaining it? 😁
@@jayevans6146 I have never had any issues 🙂
Tommy Olsen Really is that so? How long have you had it and how many miles? At least a year’s worth I assume
@@jayevans6146 I have had 10 Mercedes-Benz in a row now , very happy owner ☀️
@@tommyolsen8224 Oh 10 Benz's? That a lot of car, mate. And how much would you say you spent maintaining them?
I have bought 4 CLS over 14 yrs and when someone complains about the cost of repairs I tell them " don't buy one"
My second Mercedes’, currently have for 12 years and 270000 miles, runs like new. Great car.
I'm in love with my 07 e350, drives and looks like a new car. Makes me feel rich. Be ready to shed money for preventive maintenance but they worth it and will be reliable if you maintain them.
Just like any car. You maintain it and treat it well it gonna last long. I think my mercedes will last longer than my 2009 camry. Interior and quality is similar to a modern hotel lobby. So long as i keep maintenance on engine
Genuinely the new Mercedes is nice and improved. I never had a problem with my 2015 C300 and looking forward to a 2020 GLS.
Good luck with that one , so many problems and recalls , just like the GLE and Aclass
I got a 2017 GLE and never any recalls. The maintenance is high but mine was built in Dusseldorf Germany like Scotty says.
@@cristian50184 Thats why he said make sure it was built in Germany
Moral of this video...there expensive to fix
I'm 18 and want to buy a 2016 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 for 16k and it has 48k miles... so like do you think that's a good idea?
Now this is what I call infotainment.
V6 e class is best choice. V8 benz is a pos.
I agree with everything Scotty said, but this is more towards the V8 and higher classes. A C300 is reliable, and not so hard to work on. They’ve also perfected the V6, along with their solid 7g transmission.
I daily drive a 2013 C300 and it’s nothing but amazing.
I had a 11’ CLS550 and it was $1,000 to fix one air ride pump that went out and that’s the only thing ever wrong with it. Super reliable for sure.
I disagree with you Scotty!! I have owned Mercedes since the early 90's,
never had any problems with them! Depends on which car, like the S
class, yes it can have problems, airbag suspension, etc! I have always
bought the c class and e, best cars ever!! My last Mercedes was a
2009 e350, 241k miles, not one problem, not one check engine light! If
you put premium gas and full synthetic oil they will out last any
American junk and Japanese! My father had a Mercedes with over 600k
miles, no rust, original engine and transmission (no rebuilds), no major
problems! Some people dont take care of their Mercedes right, so know
who you are buying from when getting a used Mercedes! The best or
nothing!! :)
however. we really trust him and appreciate his job. honest comments always could offend someone
Scotty says the best are manufactured in Germany
I own a S550 2013 and 77000 mile and no problem at all. Best or nothing.
Mercs from the 90's were invincible, they were Volvos. Whereas Mercs now or during the late 20's were starting to become money pits.
So, YOU'RE THE ONE!
Same here. Owned two w210's with no issue's and now driving 2008 w211 e220cdi with 0 issues last two years, only changing oil and brake pads
Same here Cs and MLs though... the only thing out of the norm that I had go out was the super charger on my Kompressor. Car was 15 years old though and due to have something major go wrong.
Not a difficult car to DIY either...they are Mercedes ,,but they are based on the same engineering as Scotty's Toyota.
I recently saw a 2001 S430 with nearly 300k miles. Turn key daily driver too.
@@petrosaguilar8916 ... if you have friends who are mechanics.
If you have to ask for the price, you can't afford it!
Maintenance.......
Except when your car is under warranty and a dealer 30 min away charges over $100 less on simple maintenance.
@@08fordfusi Warranty rarely lasts the length of ownership, especially on a Mercedes and is still a nuisance to be back and forth to the dealer with a broken car constantly.
Or you're just curious about the price. That's such a bullshit quote.
I take my Mercedes to Walmart Automotive for maintenance. So far so good.
How are you doing with the MB at Walmart after a year? Folks who have any serious work done on their German cars should insist that the indie mechanic has the right computer scan tools...Not OBDII readers!
Always listen to scotty...very honest man right here
