I've send TLB some questions regarding sizing and MTO shoes a couple of times the last few days and Toni, the founder, answered really quickly with all the needed information. It is good to see the founder be this involved in the easy things like answering inquiry emails. I currently have a couple pairs of Carmina shoes, but after having some terrible customer service with Carmina. (They send me 70 euro shoe trees which weren't finished properly. A really rough edge on the bottom damaged the shoe, sadly didn't catch the edge before it was to late. They answered really slowly and it basically came down to 'sucks to be you') So I'll likely be ordering some TLB shoes soon. Thanks for the review, really shows the quality you get for the money you spend!

Wow! I have to commend you for the quality of the video and the breadth of investigation and care shown in your presentation. I have not seen a video with this level of information, not even from professional cobblers, about these shoes from this brand. TLB is a great brand, indeed and its customer service is first-class. I am already a subscriber to your channel and I am looking forward to seeing your next video. Great job!

Thank you so much for this video. I have no idea why it was suggested to me, as I have not shopped online or in-person for dress shoes in years, but it has been a product category I have been dissatisfied with product reviews until now. Not only did you look at the shoe with all the detail and enthusiasm I would hope to be able to exhibit if I owned a product, you did it with way higher production quality than I would expect of any shoe review. This is so cool man. Thank you, I hope your channel starts rewarding you according to what you deserve. 28k views is criminally low.
The way you support your reviews and opinions by going into details and actually **showing** them on the shoes, including with comparisons, is extremely instructive. I ended taking two pairs I own and comparing the different elements. I feel I'll be better equipped - with a lot of room to grow - when looking for my next pair. While watching this video (and another where you review an AE 5th ave), I thought it'd be awesome to have a similar analysis for an even next-level shoe quality! I'm going back for more right now.
I just recieved my Arthur Chelsea boot from TLB. It is truly the best quality show I’ve seen at this price point. I have pairs from Cobbler union and Carmina but these are stunning and the last shape is really defined. I even got a 10%off for Black Friday so it truly is the best bang for your buck. This review really showcases the details the brand puts in to the show, congrats
And just like that, I've watched every video you've made thus-far (including the shine guide.) Absolute gold! I can't wait for what lies in store down the road. Subbed after the first video with Bell on.
Nice penguin stock footage! The shoe review was also nice. I like how many options TLB Mallorca offers, especially in terms of width and sole. There are other brands I can't purchase from because they don't offer many models or one that I like. Great review overall. You covered the good and bad aspects of the shoes, and that definitely does allow us to learn how to critique shoes on our own.
What a video. I kept running over to my 7 year old park Ave's, and checking to see if mine were made more to a higher "old school" standard. Nope. same details. Told the wife what I want for Christmas, a pair of TLB-M's. Thanks and God bless!
This is the first of your contents that I have seen. It’s very well done and I am looking forward to seeing more from you. Thank you for going into detail about this topic.
Thanks for such detailed content DW! Btw, my specific pairs of Artista models are 270 degree welted. In rewatching Trenton & Heath's TLBM Artista dissection YT video, the toe puff is synthetic and the heel has a rand. My hats off to Toni and his team of craftsmen at TLB Mallorca!! 😊😊😊
Much appreciation for your sartorial video content I gathered information that I was previously unaware of such as in this video one of the tell-tell signs of a quality shoe is the "stay stitch" Thanks for sharing!
thank you for the video! I literally bought an MTO oxfords from them after watching this. TLB Mallorca if you're reading this, you should give some money to the handsome man.
That's an ice pick. TLB is what I recommend to anyone looking to move up from their first GYW dress shoes to something "nicer". I would choose TLB oxfords over most of the 500-1000 dollar heritage brand oxfords.
Thank you so much. I really liked that you actually went over the imperfections. It made me feel like I should know what to look out for when buying instead of just listening to the UA-camr say "Wow, look at that craftsmanship." Thank you so much. I feel so much more confident. Would you be willing to do a review of a high-end dopp kit?
I'm glad it was helpful! I am open to the idea, though it depends on a variety of factors including my production schedule and the product itself. If you would like to make a business inquiry, the email to which you may direct it is Dresswell.Madaras@gmail.com. Cheers!
I think one of the flaws of TLB is their standard leather sole. From experience they wear fast and aren't great when wet. I'd recommend spending a little more on Rendenbach or just get their city sole which is very nice if you like rubber soles.
Also to add on the leather heel and toe: it adds a lot of time to the production of the shoe which is why most (*cough* all the English brands *cough*) use celastic.
Very detailed and instructive video. Thank you! I just ordered my first pair of TLB Daves black leather boots. Anyone any comments about these boots? Thank you!
I discovered your channel a week ago and subscribed immediately. The amount of work you put into this video is fantastic. I am looking forward to more videos. BTW, If I win the lottery (fingers crossed! 😁😁) I will contact you to purchase a fine property. Regards.
This seems very impressive... I don't understand shoes as well as you do, but I wanted to say that the Grant Stone Oxford has very similar if not better construction at a similar/lesser price. Wouldn't they be a better comparison?
Thank you for the comment! Without getting too deep into it, just looking at the product page, here is a list of shortfalls of the GS Oxford, by comparison to TLBM: - Open Channel Sole - Uneven Heel Stack Layers - Lumpy Heel Side-Profile - Tab covering the Stay Stitch (I am not sure what exactly this tab does/covers, though it is only present on lower-quality shoes and has an unappealing loose/flappy quality to it) - Awkward Swan's Neck geometry - It appears to be 6 SPI on the Sole Stitch - Weak Welt Fudging - Sole Stitch wide out on the edge of the Welt - Uninspired Last, just kind of basic, a little wide on the toe (my opinion, to be fair) There is not much information on the materials. They say they have a leather Heel Counter, which is nice, if true. I'd like to cut them open and actually see. The lumpiness of the side-profile does not inspire confidence. Even if true, you lose alot of important qualities in exchange for it. Personally, I would much rather have Close-Channel Stitching than a leather Heel Counter. That said, they're not terrible. There's far better deals out there, though I'd probably rather have them than AE. I think the weird Swan's Neck makes them look pretty cheap, though. I think a nice, simple curve would really help the shoe.
Great question. It is a difficult comparison, as they are ultimately in two different orbits. Yearn is higher quality in terms of construction. It is also almost $100 more, so it should be. In general, I am more inclined toward the more subtle, contemporary, angular, low-profile designs that come from Asiatic makers, though that is just my personal preference and not a value assessment. European designs tend to be a bit more round, curvaceous, and 'big' (in a subtle sense) - what you might consider 'classic', as opposed to contemporary. TLBM has been operating longer, to my knowledge, and it shows. They exude a level of refinement that I think Yearn is still working on. It is also easier to hit 'peak refinement' when ample machinery is being used in the process, as opposed to fully handmade. Yearn is indeed working on it, though. I have seen pictures and they have substantially improved their shoes even since my video on them - and they were already the best in their class. Both are ultimately the best value in their respective class, and not that far off in quality anyway, so I think if price is no object to you, I'd pick whichever shoe is more compelling to you in terms of design. I know that is slightly a non-answer - does that help? You are welcome to inquire further.
@@clemensgabriel30 TLBM is easily the better value. As far as the better shoe, more objectively, still TLBM for most models. I'm sure Carmina has some shoes better than TLBM, though they will be upwards of double the price. I think TLBM has nicer Lasts in general, though that is my personal opinion.
@@DressWell.Madaras that is my problem with TLBM i like more modern italian last and Carmina has with the Baltix last the perfect one for that and I prefer looks than quality. The question is: Is Carmina so much worse when it comes to quality? Thanks for your answer!
@@clemensgabriel30 Carmina is relatively fair market value. TLBM is just unreasonably exceptional in its value - hence my showcasing it - but by no means does that condemn Carmina. Carmina is a respectable maker and produces high quality shoes. They are getting pricey as their brand grows, though not to the point where I would consider them a 'bad deal'. Looks are important - arguably more so than construction & materials - so if you like Carmina's Lasts, I'd say go for it!
Yeah, the info on these stellar shoes was great and all, but I just need you to know that I've screen recorded all your stock penguin footage for my own personal use.
Insane video :) Thanks for providing this to all of us. Have a question, is there a good dress shoe forum, where people discuss for example tlb mallorca vs yearn vs yeossal etc, etc?
So. They have a ton of different leather types in the MTO, from smooth to bumpy. Sole styles. And also they have mant choices for them, so you could have mixed styles and textures? Im guessing a smooth and lighter leather is better?
Hard to say. I am not intimately familiar with EG, but most English stuff these days seems a bit overpriced for what else is on the market. I don't know that EG is a bad deal - and their last is definitely more refined - but I personally would rather have 3-4 TLBM's for the price of 1 EG. Easily superior value with TLBM imo.
Yes! Because Navy is a bit cooler of a color that Black wax tends to be, it creates a more deep, cool, cosmic black. Black wax can often be a bit too warm, resulting in a more warm, soft, velvety black.
@@valentintambosi No, everything else I use a matching color. You certainly could though, to mix in some tint. A friend of mine uses Burgundy/Red Cream Polish on his brown shoes and it gives them a very nice red tinge to what otherwise would be a relatively plain brown.
Chris, I am going to buy TLB Mallorca based on this video which provided great guidance on a matter I know little to nothing. I would like to make sure you get credit. Do you have an Affiliate link to TLB Mallorca?
Thank you so much for taking the time to ask. I appreciate you! I do not have an affiliate link to TLBM, so you are welcome to purchase however you would like. You can always send them an email and let them know I sent you, though! The goodwill always helps the channel. Thanks!
Not super familiar, though I get asked it alot so I may do a video on them at some point. Generally, they seem pricey for what they are, which is how I feel about most English stuff these days. The lasts are a bit dull for my taste, but I know some people like the simplicity of them. Outside of personal preference for last design, I don't really see any reason to go with C&J over TLBM.
This is some National Geographic/BBC or Discovery channel level stuff. 30 minutes into the video I had to come down to comment this, and now I am resuming the video.
Great question. Honestly the value I'd say is the same. Both really great quality for their price. I think it comes more down to what you really want in terms of design and craftsmanship. Both are well-constructed and will be comfortable. Yearn is handmade and a little more refined in construction detail, where TLBM is factory-made - which some may care about, some may not. Yearn is a more sophisticated, contemporary last design. TLBM is more rooted in classic last design, with a bit of flair to its curvature. I think it's hard to go wrong with either. But I think at this price, among the high-value brands, the decision is more a matter of personal preference and what you value in this type of product.
All in all I have to say fair review. I agree on most points even though I think some pros and cons don't matter whatsoever. But in the end my conclusion is pretty close to yours that these are very good value for their money. Are they the best? Probably not, you are missing a lot of the Italian and French companies. (Also I'm heavily biased towards b/r being superior to gyw.😄) Are they one of the best in this bracket? Probably. Is Toni a great guy? 100%
Wonderful finished shoes but other counter questions to your AE comparison. 1) Can you locate a store to try on different lasts/models and find your perfect fit ? and see actual colors ? 2) Are the shoes available for closer to $200-250 during the year on sale ? 3) Can you travel through an airport or secured building without taking off your shoes ? 4) Can you send the shoes to the factory for a complete refurbishing ? 5) Do you value American made ? Just points to consider.
I own both brands Allen Edmonds is a GREAT GATEWAY SHOE to other and better brands, but in all fairness to Allen Edmonds you compared a used pair against a new pair from TLB Mallorca.
They may be a good value at 400 dollars, but i think i would be paying for ART, on my feet. I like my becket simonon shoes for 160 dollars 💸 instead and i'll pocket the difference. Can you criticise the B.S. derbies for me? 😅 i like to hear about it
That's very true! Beyond around $300, it very much could be said that one is paying more for the Fine Art-quality of these items, rather than this strict function of a dress shoe. B.S. is an interesting company and I think they are providing a very nice product to the market. I'll probably make a video expounding on them in the future.
While I agree that open channel stitches will fray you should also mention that it does nothing towards the integrity of those stitches. Leatherworkers like Bedo's leatherworks have commented on this. It is just an aesthetic critique.
With the Allen Edmunds shoes if you have seen a pair in person; they are the least best looking shoes. I owned a pair and, I ended up selling them. This factor of ashhetics when you are wearing a really nice suit does not go well if you end up wearing an AE shoe. I would recommend To Boot New York, Crockett and Jones, and of course Carmina stands out. My to go is, To Boot New York with my suits. You want unique style. Once you get that unique style in shoes; the compliments will be consistent.
If I only had 67 min left to live I would spend it watching this video. Insanely detailed and entertaining

@@DressWell.Madarasso good! Thank you. Do you do this with other colors too? For example burgundy wax on a dark brown shoe?
@@valentintambosi No, everything else I use a matching color. You certainly could though, to mix in some tint. A friend of mine uses Burgundy/Red Cream Polish on his brown shoes and it gives them a very nice red tinge to what otherwise would be a relatively plain brown.
@@DressWell.MadarasYou the man, thank you! Happy Sunday
What were those white birds with the penguins?
Came for the shoes, stayed for the "penguin narrative". Details is what it is about.
The last is the issue. Why are so many properly sized shoes too tight in the forefoot and toes, while falling off the heel!
Thanks!
Chris, I will make sure to send an email. Keep those fantastic and humorous videos coming. The Public demands it!
What’s your opinion of Crockett and Jones?
Not super familiar, though I get asked it alot so I may do a video on them at some point. Generally, they seem pricey for what they are, which is how I feel about most English stuff these days. The lasts are a bit dull for my taste, but I know some people like the simplicity of them. Outside of personal preference for last design, I don't really see any reason to go with C&J over TLBM.
Your wrist watch is exquisite. What brand is it?
Thank you for watching! What other videos would you like to see?
Beautiful shoes!
They are!
This is some National Geographic/BBC or Discovery channel level stuff. 30 minutes into the video I had to come down to comment this, and now I am resuming the video.
With the quality of these shoes at this price point, is it worth the cost upgrade to a pair of Yearns?
What shoes of this quality are actually made in America? Some models by Alden and….?
@@f.kieranfinney457 Allen Edmonds, Alden, Rancourt come to mind.
I own both brands Allen Edmonds is a GREAT GATEWAY SHOE to other and better brands, but in all fairness to Allen Edmonds you compared a used pair against a new pair from TLB Mallorca.
funny how the allen edmonds shoe looks so inferior next to the tlb show....
How do these compare to THE Spanish brand, Carmina?
Carmina is nice, but these are better and cheaper imo
I own TLB, Allen Edmonds and Carmina and TLB is very comparable with Carmina.
Where can I buy TLB shoes????
Here you go! www.tlbmallorca.com/products/oxford-van-gogh-boxcalf-black-198
How do they compare with Carmina?
TLB is better imo
While I agree that open channel stitches will fray you should also mention that it does nothing towards the integrity of those stitches. Leatherworkers like Bedo's leatherworks have commented on this. It is just an aesthetic critique.
Which kidney?
Lt side is easier to retrieve
With the Allen Edmunds shoes if you have seen a pair in person; they are the least best looking shoes. I owned a pair and, I ended up selling them. This factor of ashhetics when you are wearing a really nice suit does not go well if you end up wearing an AE shoe. I would recommend To Boot New York, Crockett and Jones, and of course Carmina stands out. My to go is, To Boot New York with my suits. You want unique style. Once you get that unique style in shoes; the compliments will be consistent.
Super 👍

I don't see the shoe it's so dark. Put some light.
