- The Volvo 740 is awesome, but its damp. I made finding the source of the water in the boot and cabin a priority and found a whole lot of much and hopefully cleared some drains.!

Hopefully you will keep this car. You will not feel like going over 40mph, you will be more relaxed and stress free. Your wife will notice the change straight away. Traffic will avoid as you dont want to annoy a large Volvo. A win-win all round.

Another source of possible water leaks into the boot are the rear light lenses. The different coloured sections of the lenses are bonded together in the factory, instead of being hot pressed together like a lot of other manufacturers do, and the bonding can fail over time. I had issues with water dribbling into the boot of my old 244 and I couldn't cure it until one day I shut the boot and the reversing light lens dropped out. I took the light clusters out, super glued the lenses back together and back to the reflector and I had no more leaks. And the reversing light lenses didn't fall out every time I shut the boot, which was nice...
A clean engine is a happy engine :-) I think you got rid of all that rust creating vegetation not a minute too soon. Fingers crossed for the drainage working now. Cheers.
I put a new headlining in all my headlinings in all three 740s. The estates were relatively easy but the saloon was an absolute sod 😳 great video, love that car so much. My saloon used to get condensation to.
Engine bay looks fabulous. Those stickers will come off the inner wings... paintwork is usually spotless. Spent many an hour detailing mine - it looks so familiar 😍🇸🇪👌🏼

Looking better now, I would be removing the boot carpets as they are going to be holding a lot of water, it would also be an opportunity to check for rust in the wells that might also be a water ingress issue, replacing the rear lights is a good start, I did notice rust under the boot rubber when you removed the right rear light, I would be checking that as I've known water to get in around rubbers that are old, keep up the good work 👍

Cleaning the drain channels is such an important job to do on cars something a lot of people forget about 👍. Glad to see this car in good hands 😊.

Top top ...melt some of the different coloured tail light lense material in cellulose thinners ..I keep I in jars ..and paint on to the cracked areas ...you can rebuild whole units quite easily ..loving the Volvo

The garage where the car used to be serviced obviously didn`t care much about looking after the engine bay and elsewhere, what a big difference you made in there, well done. The rear light clusters should be available on E Bay, I have an S40 and some clown broke my offside rear and instead of hundreds from Volvo £28.99 free post fiddly to get the last nut off but great value.

Running a little water soluble food colouring down water channels etc can help trace where water is leaking to - to stop it staining carpets &/or fabrics, place old towels or rags under the places where any leaks are likely to drain to.

That's just typical of an older car that's not been used much. Power steering fluid? Fuel filter? Brake fluid (can be changed with the brake pads & discs, if required). Really nice job!
Ill get on to all of them in the end. Its been in regular use with servicing so its not like a barn find that needs everything immediately, Ill work through all the bits as I go along, but yes, brake fluid when I do the pads would be a good time for that

Nice job, mate! Bear in mind these Volvo are very sensible to suspension bushings. And it's better to refurbish the Shocks and spend the saved money on new springs, to make it less yacht like leaning

This is food for thought to me. Judging from your vid, I suppose that if the drains had been taken care of regularly, the car would never have started rusting in the first place.
My daily driver is parked outside and I occasionally remove leaves from the gaps to keep them from clogging up the drains.
Since I want to drive my Saab as long as possible, your vid convinced me to do more about it.
You have more influence than you might think...
It would certainly stop it rusting in the footwells, I dont know if the higher up holes were rust creep or where the wheels blasted water onto that spot and it went through in the end, but definitely do yours, Saabs will get rare soon and some had real issues with bulkhead rust
@@furiousdriving I don't have the manual any more, but didn't 740 as 240 have drainholes along the floorsills? At least on a new 240 you could hose water into the air intake beneath the windscreen and the sills would be flushed, I think it should be in the manual! But gunk might have plugged the drains during the years, push a screwdriver into the holes, they are openings in the spotwelds along the panels.
Nice job, keep them coming! One of the worst things a person can do to a car is park it under a tree, as your video so clearly shows. All that muck on your Volvo was composted tree goo. The Wizard of Oz gave me my first insight about how evil trees can be, and I haven't trusted them since!

(Funny how the previous owner's maintenance didn't stretch to cleaning & detailing?) I've always felt the 740 series of Volvos 'floated like battleships and stung like buses.' That is the appeal of this series.

There was someone in the Volvo enthusiasts club who was making the light unit gaskets out of a high grade marine closed-cell material so that might be a contact worth making. They weren't expensive either...
I never realised the rover 75 and volvos had so much in common my boot is just as wet 😂

Lovely car, If the leak in the cabin is under the dash and this doesn't solve it it could also be the heater core. Theres a valve for the heating on the inside of the firewall that can also leak. Both are pretty common faults.
Drill a small 6mm hole in the bottom of tail lamps to act as drain for collected water,also helps with foggy headlights
Those rear light clusters were a problem when nearly new. I remember drilling a small hole in the bottom of the lens of my boss's 740 about 30 years ago because it kept filling up with water lol.
A few of the hobbyists here use "Scrubbing Bubbles " Bathroom cleaner to cut the scum off the engine compartment, does not harm the plastic, metal painted surfaces or wiring, and the foam gets the small particles out Well. cheers from Canada

the engine in that is the B200E which is the mechanical fuel injection 2.0 petrol. I got 145,000 out of mine and im sure it hadn't been looked after before I got mine.

Hi, the rear drain holes go through those rubber hoses in front of the boot hinges and the come out behind the rear wheel where there’s a little rubber weep valve thing. Best way of clearing them is compressed air which will blast the muck out without making a massive mess.
Re the other cabin drainage it looks like it’s had a replacement windscreen as the parking ticket holder (trapped by the glass) looks higher up the a pillar than normal. Sometimes there can be bonding issues with replacement screens which can cause leaks.
The engine in yours B200 2.0i was new in the GL for that model year - it replaced the B230 engine which was 2.3 with a carb which just remained in the base model 740 (no suffix) estate.

Clearly a labour of love , gonna be a nice car when you’ve sorted it, you won’t want to sell it !
If you get water near the distributor cap, you must remove it and leave it off for a while or dry it with a rag.
If you don't you will get a bad misfire after 1/2 mile as the inside of the cap will be covered in condensation.
Be warned!
If the cambelt is 5 years old it may be worth doing as I believe that's the time interval. Don't bother replacing the tensioner as they rarely go bad, the belts are only about £11 and it's a dead easy job.

B200E, that is the 2 liter version of the redblock, not the 2,3 liter B230E. Two liter versions was made for certain markets and did not sell in Sweden as far as I remember. These three numbered engines are a later version of the same buildt that emerged in 1974 with the 240, and are similar but differs a lot

Reminds me of my Peugeot 309 I bought a year ago. Also from an elderly gentleman who drove it for 30 years. Car was flawless until it started slowly coming apart now. New transmission, new clutch, new radiator, new plugs, new plug wires, and I still need to find new driveshafts, it's a nightmare.
Great video, love this old tank. Sell the Merc to Marc Kosovich (I think that's his name... W123 specialist in Wales) and focus on the Volvo, its a much better start point for you to work from 👍👍👍
Please strip the boot right out and dry the carpets out of the car. Note on the first episode at 9:50 the camera shows that the hardboard over the spare is covered in mould. Your eye view might not have seen that. Any drains in the floor might be blocked but they often have a grommet in so it's your choice.
You're doing a great job. It's a good car for the channel so I'd vote to keep it after the challenge. I'd consider selling the 123 although I like them too.
I hope the Z6 survived its fall. Looks as if it is still functioning but may have a bruise or two.
Look for parts on the VOC forum, you don't need to be a VOC member. You might get lucky for lenses and maybe boot lid rams.
If the rain holds off this week Ill be taking all the carpets up to dry out, so fingers crossed for good weather!
Luckily the Z6 survived with a couple of scrapes, Nikons are the old Vovlos of the camera world - tough and survive a knock or 2, which is partly why Ive not jumped ship to Sony
I grew up in a forrest area here in Denmark, and I can tell straight away that the drains being blocked like that and everything being full of dirt and crap like that, happens when a car has been parked under a tree for year or more. If left for too long it will cause it to rust and create rust holes, that will cause water to get into the car, and that will usually be the final kiss of death to the car.
Also you need to be careful about using engine degreaser on plastic parts, depending on how strong the degreaser is and if its petrolium based, they can dry out the plastic bits and cause them to crack.
This stuff was designed for engine bays so should be safe. Ive not seen a car so full of debris in a long time!
Plastic taillight can be easily repaired with instant glue and adding baking powder to it to fill up the cracks, sanding with 1000 sandpaper polish as new, will be sealed great and no morerainwater getting in.

I had a Volvo 740 GL. The floor pan under the passenger side rear footwell totally rusted away. Apparently, that's a common thing. Just welded a plate into the space, no problem. The rest of the car was nearly rust-free (bizarrely).

Put the back seats down, stand a dehumidifier inside and run an extension lead to the house. Leave it running from 8am to 9pm ✌

Exact same problem I have with my taillights. They are very very expensive new. old ones go brittle. you need some tiger seal either side of the black rubber seal. Dont overtighten them or they break off.
On top of all that it looks like you’ve got a house extension in progress!
Sadly its next doors extension. Id be building a new garage!
you need a plastic coated wire curtain holder and put it down your drain holes works every time and i bet your air intake for the heater your drain valve will be stuck shut mate

A rag or blue roll would clean up the seals and crevices in the boot and the rear light rather than fill it with water lol. Well its leaked anyways... try some silicone or something around the light to seal it up.
If you look at the sticker on the front of your cambelt cover it states B200E wich states the fuel type, size and engine management your volvo is fitted with. In this case its a petrol(diesels had a D) 2 liter not 2,3 as the 2,3 would have a B230E sticker there then. E stands for K-Jet mechanical fuel injection and it is great when it works less great when it has issues as it can be a difficult diagnose.
Oh god yes, my W123 has the mechanical K Jet and the car has yet to run...

Ive been really impressed with it so far, built like a tank same as all my other Nikons and the video quality is too good for UA-cam. The only thing I like less than my DSLRs is the focus tracking on moving subjects (on stills), that aside its fantastic!

I'd do the valvecover gasket on it, looks like it has been leaking a bit on the manifold.. Very cheap and easy too
