Love the Volvo - seriously happy memories of being driven in one by my best mate and his mum in lackock Wiltshire when we were kids - windows down, listening to fleetwood Mac, warm sunshine and a strangely comforting creak of the leather

It's your best car, and will probably last forever.
I had a 760 Turbo Estate seven seater. It's the best car I ever owned, it simply ate up the miles on a long trip such as to the south of France.
It never rusted, covered getting on for 250,000 miles and still felt and looked like new.
Every time I climbed aboard it was like slipping into your favourite slippers and putting your feet up. Just so welcoming and relaxing.
The best cars Volvo ever made in my view.

Totally agree with you Canalsman, I had a 740GL 2.3 Estate 7 seater and yupp, one of the most comfortable cars' I've ever had, it too had 250,000 miles and never missed a beat, lots of battle scars but no rust. I should have kept it, but ended up with a Mercedes W124 300te which had self levelling suspension and a silky straight six.

If you can't find matching blue trim, you might be able to recolour some other trim with vinyl dye. It's not a coating like paint, it actually absorbs into the material to change the colour. I've seen it used on 1980s computers to restore the appearance of badly yellowed plastic.

  • @malcolmherbert5127
    @malcolmherbert5127 Рік тому +23

If you take a small piece of removable plastic trim in the correct blue to an auto paint shop they can usually analyse it and produce an aerosol for you. A spray over of primer followed by the blue should look pretty good I’d think.

There is a good variety of colours available in Plastic Paint Rattle Cans. I am sure you will find the right blue. If not, get a match of correct colour in an acrylic touch up. With an etch primer coat first then the paint. Experiment on the old plastic pocket you just removed.

  • @winandd8649

@Furiousdriving: Tip for next time you remove the door card,:
    - 90 degree turn the plastic button in the cubby and remove it
    - Carefully pry loose the blue fabric panel with the vertical stripes (clips might break. When holes in cardboard back got too big, put use some silicone sealant or other flexible sealant on the edges of the holes to make tem smaller. Let dry before popping panel back in)
    - Former step will allow you to lift the plastic frame without hassle and in one piece. (without removing fabric panel, you'll likely brake the plastic frame)
    - remove the white clips at the under side of the door card
    - Lift off the whole panel.
So no need to remove the red light at the back or the 'door open' knob from the lever

Great video, Matt. Watching you do the door pocket, I had a thought. Rather than living with the grey or trying to paint that one, why not get some blue ceiling material like you used on the inside, and cover it with that? Extra padding to keep it quiet but also add some strength to the panel. I gave up on the ones on my 240. They were shattered, but so were my feet from banging into it in the summer when I was wearing sandals. Had to take the door apart anyway to redo the window regulator, so was easy enough.

Talking about paint coming off vehicles, our vans at work were de-vinyled ready for replacement last year after about 7 years of the vinyl being there, you can literally peel bits of paint off if some hasn't gone already. The vans are certainly not in as new condition even if the mileage of some is relatively low (less than 10k for one), the perils of caravan site use!
Our departments, at least, are getting replaced tomorrow (should have been in 2020!) with new electric vans (Peugeot Partner e if they are the same as the two that were replaced at the beginning ), though currently we only have one regular "granny charger" and nothing else, charging them is going to be interesting.

Can we have the A Team tape on as background noise when you next have a lot of welding to do?

Is there a way of repairing those plastic door pockets? I have seen some videos of crack repairs being done from the back, grinding, then using heat and filling with melted plastic. Might be worth a try.

Nice update on the Volvo, always good to get yourself some respite from the crap jobs that come with cars, like a bit of therapy! Just wondering if the Volvo mirror switches are like a Rover 75's and react well to being taken apart and cleaned internally? At that age it could be gunk that's easy cleaned up on the circuit board inside the switch unit?

Matt threw his U/S Rover 75 switch pack away without cleaning it. Works every time. Lack of regular use etc the contacts get a light surface corrosion spoiling electrical continuity. Clean up easy fix.

Could the door trays not be plasticoated in blue. They must do it in a similar blue. Or maybe try vinyl wrap.

Based on my recent experience I'm surprised that the cassette still works on the radio as it is clearly older than mine...I've been using a 3.5mm headphone jack - cassette adaptor on the factory SC-700 double din stereo on my my 90s 850 ever since I bought it in the early 10s. In the last week or so the cassette started auto reversing (the adaptor has no tape loom) interrupting my playback. turned out the rubber band on the tape mech snapped. (my walkman had a similar issue, made around the same time). I was able to take apart the mech enough and fit a "stationary" type rubber band to it and it has so far lasted a a trip between the UK east and west coasts. dunno whether compared to the factory bands how long the thing will lasts... whether it will be years, months, or weeks 😄

Hi . Ive been thinking about ur volvo and remember u saying how juicy it was for a 2 ltr.
I dont know if it will help u. But i was watching a car program a few months ago , a 240 with the same engine as urs and it was also using alot of fuel. And they traced it back to one of the injectors wasn’t operating as it should and it was letting about 2/3times more fuel than it should have done.
Dont know if this is happening to ur car but i thought id mention it just in case. U never know
