On the Volvo Owners' Club UK website the information on headliner replacement recommends removing both of the front seats AND the center console on the sedan. On the wagon it can be removed out the rear hatch. To make the job even easier on a sedan they recommend removing the windshield, NOT the rear window. Their reasoning: "Because a rear window is more costly than a front windshield and is held in place by tough urethane adhesives (and your sandblasted front windshield may need to be replaced anyway), consider removing the front glass instead." I hope this info will help any future DIYer's.

Don't forget the little clip rear and center that helps hold the headliner up!
Its a huge struggle doing this on a 4 door sedan/saloon. Trick is yanking the front seats, console, and rear butt cushion out. And the weather stripping/door gasket for the door its coming out. • @NickMyers1

Exactly what I was going to say. The actual trick to doing this, is taking all seats, and the console. Remove the body side door gasket for the door it's coming out of, and pull it out. Done this on quite a few cars - actually. Its a pain in the ...job. There's some guys at a local "flea market" who will do any sedan for $150 US. Gray, Beige, or Black - choose what you want. $125 for SUV/CUV/Minivan (anything with a rear hatch).
Anyways great job getting it out, and laying down some much better looking headlining material. That foam dust drove me CRAZY in my 87 Ford Taurus wagon. The car was so much nicer once It was replaced.

3:24 that's good ol volvo plastic for ya, broke some plastic parts when i tried to get my door panels off. Gotta be careful :p
Too bad your roof it broke, though it it possible to get it out. I swapped out the headliner as well on my 1987 gle, When i tried to to it through the back doors it didn't work at all, though i managed to get it out through the front passenger door with the seat removed and with the headliner pretty much intact (i did damage an old rotten corner). I repaired that using some building/construction type glue, gaffa tape and a piece of masonite together with a bunch of textile glue when i put on my fabric.
It sure is a nice upgrade and really makes the driving experience so much nicer when 40 year old headliner dust isn't pouring down on you! Feels like a brand new car, doesn't it?

Definitely just brave. Not stupid because you didn't know beforehand exactly how difficult it would be to remove the headliner.

Fiddly old job! I did the same on a Saab 9000 CD (booted version) a few years back. After a fight it came out through a doorway although I forget which one. It's hard to refit it without making finger dents, best solution i could think of was to wrap white cotton rags around my hands. A sunroof makes it even more flimsy, never again!

Considering your doing a two man job single handed you should be proud of what you have achieved.
I have old cars and like you have found myself being twisted into shapes not previously known to man doing this job 😬
    Good show.

I can recommend an American bonding formula Q-Bond for repairing that A post, should be available from any DIY store, it's a combination of a super glue and reinforcing powders, which will stick the plastic and regain its rigidity. Perhaps if the repair is done on the reverse side of the pillar, it won't show when you go to reinstall. It should dry black anyway, if you use the black powder 😉. Well done on the headliner repair job, I followed a similar method on a headliner repair I did on an Alfa 147 a couple of years back. Common problem on those.

It's quite expensive, but it serves as a good thing to have at your disposal in the garage, for various projects on other cars as well, as it can repair a lot of engine parts and components that maybe difficult to find as it's petrol and oil resistant.

You did a great job I must say. Reupholstering the headliner is the worst job ever. I will have to do this too. But sadly I have a huge headliner in my mk. A Frontera so it's going to be absolutely scary and hard to do. Wish it would ended up the same way.

To be honest the actual covering part was easy, its the plastic trim thats tricky. With a big back door you should be OK getting it out

@@terryatkinson3182 Seriously? The generation thing? 'Snowflakes' and whiners are from all generations, most often the ones calling a whole generation 'snowflakes' were the ones of their generation. I've driven tractor-trailers for a while, as a woman, definitely got my share of grease on things I needed to touch (airlines, trailer feet crank...) and "let the girl sweat" (lowering my trailer to the point I can't drive underneath it without cranking it up again) type of pranks, part of the job as long as it doesn't turn into ruining eachothers day or hurting eachother.

If you mean the hose seal to the rad, probably replace the hoses and clips-the rubber will perish over the years and start to leak on any car
