I once rescued two baby Iridescent Sharks from a neglect case where they were shoved in a tiny 10 gallon that looked as if it had never seen a water change in its lifetime. Well, as soon as I took these babies home, I decided to do the research. THIS is when I found out that they could reach a whopping 4 feet long! As soon as they were healthy enough to be rehomed, I immediately put them onto CL, stating that "you must have at least 250 gallons per fish" (because that's apparently how many gallons one of them needs, if I remember correctly). Not too long later, and someone contacted me saying how they were setting up a new 500 gallon heated pond (we live in Colorado where it's cold, so as I always say, "heated is needed"), saying how they've been cycling it for two weeks and wanted to keep a couple of large monster fish! I told them how they could probably only keep these fish in the pond. They seemed fine with that! So, long story short, I did rescue two youngsters from a very neglectful home, but with the right care, they grew up to be stunning (and absolutely ginormous) hand-feeding gentle giants! 😄

Hi John, I just watched your video- 10 Titan fish-- I was so excited to see some of my favorites. I haven't had fish for some time due to " life's upsets". Bit I wanted to share with you my 3 ultimate fish that I did have years ago in my 125 gal tank. #1- Arrowana, I had a silver one that started out at about 1 1/2 inches and got about 11inches. #2- Clown Knife- I purchased 2 about 2" and 2 1/2" , they were also in the 125 gal and grew to be approx. 8 + 10" , until "the divorce". That was when my fishkeeping ended, with a big fight in court over them and the 125 gal tank. Very sad. Anyway, my #3 favorite is Clown Loaches-- how can anyone NOT love these cute little guys? A friend of ours had 1 that was close to 12". 😲 What a fish! Thank you for letting me relive a happy time in my life, and for helping me to get back into fish keeping with your videos. Merry Christmas to you and Lisa. And thank you both.
I'm about to start all over with cichlids (son moved out etc) and when you talked about Oscars I couldn't agree more. They're fantastic, funny and such personalities. I remember when I first got them and one of them got so scared that he dug through the substrate (and when I say "dug", think Garden Tiller on speed) and hid under the substrate, laying on his side. I thought "Oh God, I've killed him - he's had a heart attack and died".) I cautiously moved the substrate away - and then he decided that he wasn't dead after all. We became buddies in no time. I wish I could have them again but I had a 154 gallon tank (700 liters) and can't have that size of a tank again. But I just love them!
Clicked specifically for the gourami thumbnail. Used to have one that a couple months after my dad died this year it died too, which may have been my fault. I’ve been watching all sorts of fish videos to learn as much as I can since. Grew up with that gourami, it really was like a water dog.
I literally told my husband YESTERDAY that I wished you guys would do a video with iridescent sharks and now here it is! Also I definitely want an Oscar, I used to have one and I LOVED him!
John I have a different idea for aquarium titans. How about the 10 aquarium titans video of fish that had the biggest impact on the hobby. For example the guppy, goldfish, etc. Great video
I remember those days. I was amazed at how strong oscars are, too. I couldn't believe the size and weight of the things mine moved around. I finally had to remove most of it out of concern about glass getting broken. I had to remove filter intake and outflow extensions for the same reason. The oscars would remove them. They banged heaters around, too, so I had to hide those as best I could. I recently saw canister filters with the heater inside them. Would've loved one like that when I had oscars.
I watched this video purposely to hear what you had to say about the iridescent shark. Over 10 years ago I was that person you described in this video. I purchased a fish, on a spur of a moment, because I thought he was cute. I did ask how big he will get and was told he would do fine in my 150-gallon aquarium and that I could even get two. So I convincingly bought two iridescent catfish. One was black with grey and the other was albino. Before year-end, the albino iridescent, which we called Moby, killed all the other fish in our aquarium. The only person I was mad at was myself for not doing my homework. Moby lived with us for 2 years and a 150 gallon tank was way too small. They deserve to be on the list of "Titans".
For me...its the African tiger fish, not the goliath (because they reach 6ft) but their smaller cousins, they still get big, and are pretty active. They've got teeth on them though...
Best comeback for Oscar haters, but honestly I’ve never met someone who does not like Oscars. Oscars are my all time favorite as well, I’ve got 15 in a 500 gallon pond, but it kinda takes away the charm of keeping Oscars. I also really wanna get an araipaima one day, the day I can built a huge enough pond to house it. In my country, an araipaima cost bout USD60, haha...since John mentioned he does not like catfish so much, but I was hoping to one day see a top 10 catfish video, any topic, just all catfish though.

The Mekong giant catfish. Granted you NEED 20k gallon tank to keep one as they can get up to 350kg (770lbs) and 9-10ft long. They are really amazing fish

Chinese high fin shark! It can get VERY big! I think the record was a few hundred pounds, and theyre actually sweet quiet algae eaters! They are very cool and very beautiful with black and white bands across their bodies and a HUGE dorsal fin, but I don't suggest them to anyone that has less than a huge pond or 300-400gals.
Koi,--- lake stocking game fish: Northern Pike, Walleye, Muskellunge up to 54 inches --- these you can buy from a fish farm here in Iowa. I had Northerns in a tank but they needed cold water. Also an invasive species that can wriggles across land is the snakehead. Some of these are illegal to keep in an aquarium in some states--I'd love a video.
Your opinion on oscars matches mine exactly. When I go to a lfs and they don’t have oscars and I ask why I usually hear “I don’t like oscars so I don’t sell them.” While I can applaud them for it I don’t think I can trust there judgement on fish hahahaha
I know someone who kept arapaima in a converted swimming pool. He said they feed it whole chicken (dressed) and foot long milk fish once to twice a week. Grew over 10 feet long.
Did you know that Jeremy Wade was injured during the episode featuring The Arapaima? The fish struck him with it's massive tail in the chest. It caused him permanent heart problems!
I have 2 48inch pangasius cats and they're only 5 years old and get bigger by the day, and a 28 inch giraffe catfish kept in a 800 gallon indoor heated pond and they're awesome and to top it off they're hand fed and I love them 💖
I had a arrowana that grew to 40 plus inches. I had to put cinder blocks on top of the tank. My red tail cat tried to eat the silver beast at over 3 feet!
Just recently started following your channel and this video came up. Made me think about how as a kid we had a 55 gallon tank with 2 common plecos, 3 oscars, a clown knife, a red tail catfish, and two fire eels. Until I watched your videos I thought everyone else's tanks were sparse. No, our tank was just way too small for any of those fish, let alone all of them together.
Learned my lesson not long after I entered the hobby. I had 3 Oscars and 2 red belly Pacu in a 55 gallon tank. They got so huge and aggressive that I had to gift them to my lfs. Never again. Now I have a 75 full of tetras 😂
At 1:08 i like how there is a $40 clown knife with like 2-3 $250 Goldie Sunshine Plecos... I've been trying to find those sunshine plecos everywhere but they are super expensive..
Great video and list! Just one small correction, Giant Gourami’s can live for more than 10 years. Mine is 15years and still going strong! They really are like dogs, they have a huge personality!
Been watching a lot of your videos since I fell down the fish hole after taking my sisters tank cause she had to move and couldn’t take it. No room. But loved the Oscar part! LOL. One day I hope to get some once I up my tanks sizes
Sturgeons are really popular here in the UK and parts of Europe as pets, and given the chance they grow to huge sizes and I've seen some in shops where I've just thought "I wish I was a millionaire so I could afford a tank for that!"
I, myself, have 2 Oscar's. I have Sally, who is the leader of the two and she knows it. She has a very dominant personality. She has to be the first for food, for pets and treats. Then I have Jack, who is very mild in comparison. He will follow Sally around and wait till she's done eating and being pet before coming to the top. I love them
I used to raise Arapaima gigas :) Among other things but yeah. Also had tiger shovelnose that was rather active. It's just hard to keep them in a community because they will eat everything and look 'permanently pregnant' lol. They were housed with an RTC and two 'paimas tho and did pretty well.
I work with 4 Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) and they're so crazy active and fun to work with but they're out growing the enclosure and huge bullies in the system. Currently they're 4ft long.
You forgot giant snakehead or in my country we call it Toman. When they get big their green and black tiger like stripes pop up. Just a beautiful beast
About red tailed cats, I used to have to talk people out of buying them all the time. The line I used was "They get so big, that where they come from, they're known for eating children." Trying to tell people they need an aquarium the size of their living room usually doesn't get the message across.
Very funny John but deadly serious - more education like this is necessary to educate the poor people who just go into the shop to buy little Billy a cute little fish! Pacu's upset me the most - when they outgrow their 125 they can't even turn in the tank - OFR to the rescue!! Cheers and thanks for the great vid!!
At a local arcade they have probably a 700 gallon tank with just a few small African cichlids, a pacu, a silver arowanna, and a big ol dovi I did not even play games I just watched the fish tank all day. No lights in there though so it looked kinda bad but still cool
My local catfish restaurant has a pet redtail in a massive floor to ceiling tank. I think he is blind in one eye, but has been there most of my life. I first saw him when I was 5, maybe less, and I am now 20.
A mom&pop pet shop I worked at had a red tail cat for a while, he had the largest tank and would get into staring matches with the pea puffers across from him. He was a meanie though.

Bursted out laughing when you defended the amazing Oscars! And you mentioned Big Rich! I'm so happy I found your channel! Subscribed
Did you know that Jeremy Wade was injured during the episode featuring The Arapaima? The fish struck him with it's massive tail in the chest. It caused him permanent heart problems!
Wow I'm jw fan yes it's true mam
I have 2 48inch pangasius cats and they're only 5 years old and get bigger by the day, and a 28 inch giraffe catfish kept in a 800 gallon indoor heated pond and they're awesome and to top it off they're hand fed and I love them 💖
Hahahahahahahahaha! I laughed so hard with the Oscars section.
Yes! Oscars are the best!!!
The only reason I know half of these fish is from Ohio fish rescue 😂
I had a arrowana that grew to 40 plus inches. I had to put cinder blocks on top of the tank. My red tail cat tried to eat the silver beast at over 3 feet!
I love the silvers. Had quite a few over 3 feet. Had to make a heavy raised top for my tank. Had a couple jump out
Just recently started following your channel and this video came up.
I love the cursing. I was already subscribed, but if I wasn't, that would have sealed the deal! Love your videos!
'They will literally eat everything'
Gulper catfish: *Hold my mouth*
LOL. One day I hope to get some once I up my tanks sizes
gar, peacock bass & koi
Sturgeons are really popular here in the UK and parts of Europe as pets, and given the chance they grow to huge sizes and I've seen some in shops where I've just thought "I wish I was a millionaire so I could afford a tank for that!"
Sturgeons are known to be pond fish. If they weren't, I'm sure they would have been on this list.
I love them
Black or silver piranha bro. Those some nice fish.
Ripsaw Catfish. Mine is active and the markings are amazing. They can grow up to 3 feet long.
I used to raise Arapaima gigas :)
Among other things but yeah.
Also had tiger shovelnose that was rather active. It's just hard to keep them in a community because they will eat everything and look 'permanently pregnant' lol. They were housed with an RTC and two 'paimas tho and did pretty well.
Thumbnail earns a like alone
I work with 4 Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) and they're so crazy active and fun to work with but they're out growing the enclosure and huge bullies in the system. Currently they're 4ft long.
14:32 best part
Lol, it had to be said!
Darn right
You forgot giant snakehead or in my country we call it Toman. When they get big their green and black tiger like stripes pop up. Just a beautiful beast
Clown Knives are one of my favorite fish. They are just gorgeous.
About red tailed cats, I used to have to talk people out of buying them all the time. The line I used was "They get so big, that where they come from, they're known for eating children."
Trying to tell people they need an aquarium the size of their living room usually doesn't get the message across.
Please do a video about alternative monsterfish or top 10 big beautiful chichlids
I like this guy funny and informative, thank you
9:44 it looks like the tanks glitches. Crazy even in slow no the guy lines up perfectly, but the fish in the back glitch
14:23 I do agree what he say and I support him.🤙🤙🤙🤙
At a local arcade they have probably a 700 gallon tank with just a few small African cichlids, a pacu, a silver arowanna, and a big ol dovi I did not even play games I just watched the fish tank all day.
Thank you!
I'm surprised you didn't have Gar on your list, they get pretty big to.
