One of my pet peeves is when I go online to share photos or videos of something, only to have that one know-it-all chime in, doling out advice that you never asked for. They just assume that everybody that crosses their path is a novice, and they should be grateful that this seasoned veteran is here to grace you with their knowledge. 😧
IKR, when the post is about something like “what kind of lettuce is your snail’s favorite” with a picture of a snail with no context about the tank and a know-it-all chimes in about a small fish in the background of the photo “your tank is too small for that fish, it needs at least 40 gallons, rehome it NOW” and then the tank of the person posting ends up being like 125 gallons
Yes 😂. I joined a beginners facebook group and oh my goodness, people were soo rude, considering that it was supposed to be a place to share ideas and ask questions. People were posting pictures of their tanks that they were all proud of and getting absolutely slated by snobs who thought their perfectly manicured aquascapes with more greenery than anything else we the only way. I left the group when they were making jokes at the expense of people with SpongeBob decs and calling them tacky! Mine has SpongeBob to please my 8 year old kid fml😮. I swear they were disgusted by anything the fish wouldn’t have in their “natural environment”… ummm… I suspect none of the fish actually have a clue what their habitat looks like 😊

I just started out in the hobby a few months ago to help control my OCD. I love it so much, doing small amounts of matenince every week really helps me destress!!! thanks so much for all the tips! :D
I didn’t know I had OCD until it dawned on me one day. I do everything in increments of 5s, invert tubes 5 times, shake solution 10-15 times, I even fill the tubes with 5ml of water, even when rinsing them out they go under the faucet 5 times.
I am lazy, but I honestly find the weekly water change/minor cleaning do be kinda relaxing. 10-15 minutes out of a day off where I might spend most of it gaming to keep everything happy in the tank is pleasant. It keeps the tank pleasant to look at if I decide to just relax there instead of in front of a screen. However, I don't have a huge number of tanks (pretty much only 1 active with some other stuff around for quarantine), so it lets me focus my attention on one tank.

This reminded me of a really silly mistake I did years ago 🤦🏼♀️ I’m still working at a pet store but years ago I had been there for about 2 years at that point and we were moving the fish around to different tanks in our fish area (my favourite section) I was moving a large amount of white cloud minnows, I was catching them and putting them into a little plastic bucket thing that hooks onto the side of the big tanks then tipping that little bucket into the new tank, while loading the little bucket up with fish a customer came up to me to ask for help and stupidly I walked away leaving the danios in the bucket, a few hours later after helping a few different customers I came back to the danios and they had began jumping out of the little bucket onto the floor! I panicked and started to try pick up the multiple danios flopping around on the floor. I was horrified they fish where jumping out! All I can guess is I left them for to long in the little bucket and the oxygen levels where to low with so many fish and they just leaped for it, It’ll never ever let myself be distracted and leave a fish in a terrible position again I also have over flooded a few tanks too because I was distracted 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

I have fully planted aquariums where i have to mix my water from RO and do weekly water changes and monthly cleanouts and trimmings. I get it. It is tough! But i still love it! The finished product gives me great joy! What also gives me great joy, watching your videos. So thanks for all you do! Keep on fish keeping!
I started watching this video while doing my water changes and almost forgot to stop my 55 gallon from filling when the video straight says "forgetting to stop the water" So glad I was watching this.
I set up a new 40 gallon about 6 months ago, I used the sponges from a well established aquarium in the new filter so that it was cycled right away, for about a month the water was cloudy and I couldn't figure out why, the plants and fish were doing fine so I just let it be, today the water is crystal clear, it took awhile but it worked itself out.
I remember growing up (1980s and 1990s) my mom would stir around the rocks and let the filter literally catch the crap. When I got my own tank, I purchased a simple vacuum and it is a game changer! Also plants love the dirty water. If you don’t like living in filthy conditions neither does any other living thing.
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your videos. I am a 15 year fish keeper of mostly cichlids, but always learn something new from the two of you. That includes my next project, breeding!!! Wish me luck :p
Haha! I’m a new hobbyist but have been using the KISS method all my life - never thought to apply it here! Thanks for the tip :-). Thanks for all your amazing videos too, while I’m at it.
Nice tank in the background with Brichardi. I've had a Tang tank with Brichardi for 25+ years! They are breeding machines and fiercely protective of their fry. Inexpensive and beautiful fish!
Buy a titanium heater with automatic shut off. Vivosun is the one I go with. Saved my as% when a seal broke on one of my tanks while sleeping. The heater turned it self off an no problems. I'm still using the heater in another tank.
Thanks guys, this Chanel it's been the best guide in this hobbie for me thank you for all the advices been said the help me to have my feet on earth all the time, keep going, blessings!! O almost forgot ,i am moving to North Carolina i would like to make a ride to visit you in the amazing New home you have!!
I got a 5 gallon tank and a betta fish and have learned how to properly care for fish from your videos! Also have struggling 10 gallon tank that I'm hoping to eventually get more functional and decorated.
I really like this format and these informative videos culled from the community. Sharing wisdom is such an important thing and the aquarium community is really good for it.
Working at petco as an aquatic specialist under the guidance of a really intelligent dude who has been there for 17 years. He basically knows everything about fish even with no formal education. My store manager on the other hand is not so bright. We have to fill the salt water sumps everyday. For some reason the store manager decided to fill them in the morning and forgot about it. He ended up over filling the sumps and completely messing up the salinity. He could have killed thousands of dollars worth of fish, but luckily only two $50 anemones died. Still sucks, but it could have been way worse.
I am probably one of the laziest video gameing fools in your community, but when it comes to my tanks, I enjoy the maintence, my fish give me so much joy, I find that the cleaning and interaction with my fish make it so much more fun. Game on!
"Lack of impulse control" I have ADHD and I'm already mentally wired to have none of that, fish keeping has NOT HELPED. 😭😭😭😭 I haven't made any problematic buys but I'm out way too much money from plants and decorations and fish and.... 😭
I am new at fish aquarium, I bought a 20 Gallon tank and got 24 fishes (4 Angel, 8 glass fish, 4 Platy, 4 Guppies, 2 White skirt Tetras, 2 Danio) in which my 14 fish died. I am using overhead filter with a sponge and a heater set at 25 Celsius. I have used RO water to fill the whole tank. Please let me know why my fishes are dying? Please help
I was looking for this comment. I knew someone else would know about these amazing gadgets. There are also water sensors meant for alerting you to a water leak under a sink that can then be plugged into a home automation system. Then there are also gadgets that you can place on a water shut-off valve. So, if anywhere in your house one of the sensors gets wet all the water will shut off.
@@cleverusernamenexttime2779 I'm sure it would give my husband an actual heart attack, so I won't be doing it. However, i think I might have to see if there are videos of others doing it.
Yo this Fred durst looking dude be informative, cheers my guy, your helping a noob out massively, dropped a sub big up on the content.oh the fed Durst thing be a compliment in my eyes lol
I can relate to the have medication on hand at all times because things happen at the worst times. I left for a weekend to go to my uncle’s cabin and I made sure everything with my tanks was good and stuff but then I come home and one of my fish lost an eye and I have no idea what happened. The others don’t pick on it or anything it was just completely gone when I got home. The fish is doing good though and it’s been like that for several months now and gets good fine and everything.
Yeah when I started a months back I just got tank and threw fish in a 3.5 gallon most of those fish made it once I upgraded but I am very guilty for not doing research at the start of the hobby.
First video I am watching on this channel. This is my third channel to write things down from to compare to the notes I have taken from 2 other channels.
My heater and I are low key frenemies, it works wonderfully and I’ve never had it go out on me, but I have forgotten to unplug it while water changing multiple times. One time it melted through the plastic holders and my room smelled like burnt plastic for a week, I had to scrub the glass around it and the ornaments as well as do an extra water change to make sure no plastic toxins got in the water. My heater now has a black patch of hardened plastic chilling on it that won’t scrub off. I’ve also reached in and grabbed it when it was cool enough to be out of the water but still hot enough to burn if you directly touch it 🙃😂
Not sure if this was already mentioned, but keeping all your power cords in a power bar and then turning the power off at the bar, can possibly prevent forgetting to plug in filter, because if you have a aerator you notice right away it's not on. Also you can buy a timer for a garden hose, may be able to MacGyver to use that on your fill hose? I consistently overfilled horse water tanks until I got a timer.
I have my impluse moments at my lfs but they are good in helping me doing research before i buy my fish and the helped me recently educating me about a sialfin tang i had my eye on and they helped me really well and the tang is doing great its a absolute showpiece in my reef.
PREACH THOSE FACTS!!!!! ive made a few mistakes as a fishkeeper and i can't stand lazy fish keepers. pls dont have fish if you dont want to do the work it takes to take care of fish. i love the bluntness! fishes depend on us to care for them!
the filter one always stresses me out because in the winter we get a lot of bad storms that knock out our power. without a generator, i'm stuck waiting for the power to come back on and see what chaos went down.
To keep from over filling your tanks you can get a sensor that will sound an alarm. Its actually meant for basements but you just binder clip the little sensor to your aquarium and as soon as water touches it, it goes off... I had one of these before I had my basement waterproofed and a sump put in and one day it hit me.... I can use this for the Aquariums. You over fill once you don't want it to happen again!
I have to agree with the fish research. Where I live there isn't a speciality shop for only aquatic animals they are only petstores that also sell fish. So it's often the case the person who is responsible for keeping them isn't in the store because he's responsible for all the fish of that particular chain in the region. And the person in the store has no idea about fish at all except for packaging them for selling. When I was there and the person couldn't answer my questions I quickly left and decided it would be better to drive 3 hours to a speciality shop and back to buy my fishes. I called them before going there and they were a huge help. I still buy all my supplies in their online shop even though it's a bit more expensive than buying in that pet chain.
I have a 55 gallon aquarium (I think) and it has guppies, the regular white cloud mountain minnows, water sprite, giant kind of duckweed and two java ferns. I plan on adding a dwarf gourami or honey gourami to the tank. I also plan on getting some java moss or some guppy grass. Would it be a great idea to get a smaller species of gourami and some more plants for the aquarium? Just asking for your opinion about what i plan on doing. The tank does not have much gravel? substrate as well. And have a small 5 gallon fish tank light. So what would you do if you where in my shoes (I am Just still asking about your response if you were in the same situation I am in)
It’s weird. I’m normally considered a lazy person but when it comes to fish I am a hard worker. I have 3 tanks, 5, 10, and 20 gallon. I stay up late at night researching ways on how to improve my tanks and make the fish he authored and live better lives. I’m 16 btw
Hey great video!! Question here on a different subject I’m setting up a 40 breeder for one or two fancy goldfish and a dojo I was looking at the Aqueon led pro 50 for it and 2 sponge filters. I have the Aqueon led pro 75 on my other tank an love it. Do you think that size would work fine for that tank with that load? Thanks for all the valuable information.
I like this format. I may be starting a 5 gallon Betta tank soon. It seems more interesting and you may come up with things that you hadn't thought of before. I only miss Lisa!
All my cans are on smart plugs... Alexa turns em off when I maintain the fishies. 2 hours later if I have not told her to turn it on she will tell me "You don't even care about the babies"
Very good video content. Haven't been around for awhile. Wow, John sure has come a long way from the beginning. And he had great content then. He learned from the best, Sir Corey!🤫🤗😉😇 I'm sure the Betta thing will be a big hit!🤑😎
Oh, regarding medicines. Canada has banned the sale of meds in petstores, and vets don't seen to have been notified (i asked ours) so they had no idea when I asked. We're told by the fish store to use salt and tannin (indian almond leaves, for instance).
These stickers are for Americans ONLY! 😠 *USA! USA!!* 🇺🇸 I got a sticker with my order last week, and I'll get another sticker when I get the rest of my order this week! [evil laugh] *Muah-Ha-Ha!!!!* 😈
I'm high functioning autistic, and I NEVER forget to plug my filter back in. I have 4 plugs I have to plug in everyday, I high a high water flow on the surface so feeding is a pita. I have to push my pup out of the way to plug everything back in (she loves watching them all day especially during eating)
I'm new to fish keeping and so far, I am very, very confused. Lol. So many different articles and videos saying different things confusing me even more. I just got a ten gallon tank for my betta fish and he may have some sort of disease (not sure what our what to get for it.) My tank is all set up with the water filter on, but I do not want to add him until I treat him first. He is quarentined for now. what should I get to treat him? How long to treat him? And when exactly can I add him to the tank? I read about cycling a tank. How do you do that? Are you supposed to cycle a tank when you first get it before you add fish? So confused. Also are you supposed to cycle a tank anytime after? Ugh! Thank you. I hope someone can answer all this.
My work around forgetting to turn the filters on involves an inexpensive timer, the type that has the pins for setting its on/off times. I simply pick one or two pins on separate sides of the dial to turn off the power for the least amount of time. When I feed, I simply turn the dial to one of the off positions. The timer will turn on the power in 15 minutes or so giving the fish plenty of time to eat. You don't even have to worry about the time set because you are not using it as for a schedule, just as an on/off switch.
The amount of dumb things I've done I'm surprised I haven't set my house on fire or broke something. Taking a heater out and then accidentally plugging it back in while NOT IN THE TANK and Overfilling buckets and getting water on power strips. Heater still works too coulda cooked an egg on it tho 😭
This is not the hobby for a lazy person - what a great tip! Keep it real. This hobby does take work and if you're hecka lazy, you don't want to sink your money and time into this thing. Save your money. Please believe me, I'm pretty lazy and this hobby is a chore, but is such a great payoff.
so i have 7 guppies and 2 small angels in my 20 gallon tank. And yesterday my dad decided to bring home a Oscar calling it a ‘beautiful tiger fish’. fml
Made the mistake of putting a small crayfish in my 55g. She was perfect, beautiful, ate pest snails and leftover food... and 3 months later my cardinal tetras start to disappear...whoops
I almost overflow 2 of my tank's watching this video😂😂😂😂 I'm not sure if I still a beginner probably yes but I start like 2 months ago with 6 different strains of guppies and all of them are separate by Strain, Female, Male, Fry Babies, quarantine tank's and just aerators with sponge filter doing 50% water change every 2 days😂
Also 24 crayfish😂😂😂😂😂 so surprise everyone are alive and healthy, PO2 for the small crayfish, PO4 for the breeders, and for all the guppies just BBS nothing else

Buy a titanium heater with automatic shut off. Vivosun is the one I go with. Saved my as% when a seal broke on one of my tanks while sleeping. The heater turned it self off an no problems. I'm still using the heater in another tank.
Outstanding video, please use this format, thank you
Thanks guys, this Chanel it's been the best guide in this hobbie for me thank you for all the advices been said the help me to have my feet on earth all the time, keep going, blessings!! O almost forgot ,i am moving to North Carolina i would like to make a ride to visit you in the amazing New home you have!!
I'm so bad at forgetting things that I just use the google assist on my phone to remind me. "Hey Google, remind me to plug in filter" 👍
your advice is amazing, just thank you.
Definitely one of my favorite top tens you’ve done. I would enjoy seeing more content like this!!
I just found this Chanel and they allready gave me a new video!
Yes, love the format. Keep going, your videos are very informative. I just got my first aquarium a month ago and a few tiger barbs and a snail.
I am probably one of the laziest video gameing fools in your community, but when it comes to my tanks, I enjoy the maintence, my fish give me so much joy, I find that the cleaning and interaction with my fish make it so much more fun. Game on!
You guys are Brilliant... thank you for what you do. You make me more passionate about this hobby. Many thanks!!!!
"Lack of impulse control" I have ADHD and I'm already mentally wired to have none of that, fish keeping has NOT HELPED. 😭😭😭😭
I haven't made any problematic buys but I'm out way too much money from plants and decorations and fish and.... 😭
Same idk how the 10 gallon frog and snail tank turned into a 3000 gallon koi pond but it happened
@@brickwhy my one tank somehow split and became 9 tanks and idk how
having adhd AND being autistic is a recipe for disaster lol
Yeah I have no clue how yes you can get a fish tank turned into 110 gallon tank lol
Amazing video! Thanks for the shout out!
Please help
To avoid tank overflow get a liquid level indicator alarm from The Braille Store.
The ending made me giggle 😂 great videos guys!!👍
Yo this Fred durst looking dude be informative, cheers my guy, your helping a noob out massively, dropped a sub big up on the content.oh the fed Durst thing be a compliment in my eyes lol
I like how the video is, great info and flow
Just became a commission aquarium builder because of this channel
Excellent video. I luv this format.
These guys are epic.. So insightful. Many thanks. Please keep the videos coming.
I personally never liked canister filter because I'm lazy.. then I was gifted an oase biomaster thermo. I LOVE that filter!! Super easy to maintain.
the filter one always stresses me out because in the winter we get a lot of bad storms that knock out our power. without a generator, i'm stuck waiting for the power to come back on and see what chaos went down.
So blessed by these videos. I love being a fish parent 🐠
Great info John.
You are awesome! Thank you for all the advice. I love watching your videos you’ve taught me soo much!!
I’m 16 btw
Perhaps you just don't have much ambition? That's me, super lazy but when in passionate about something I strive for the best
Thanks for this Information.. Very very useful and helpful..
Do keep posting.
Warm regards,
The UnknownManCub 👍😎
You reminded me I needed to buy the medication stuff. I got everything else for my new tank but forgot that. Thanks
Great advice, all 10 things - loving the inclusion of the members comments👍💕
Are you guys shipping your stuff to australia? I want a bubbles sticker 🤣.
These stickers are for Americans ONLY! 😠 *USA! USA!!* 🇺🇸
I got a sticker with my order last week, and I'll get another sticker when I get the rest of my order this week! [evil laugh] *Muah-Ha-Ha!!!!* 😈
I beleive they are shipping there bettas internationally. so idk, they may include a bubbels sticker with the bettas.
I'm high functioning autistic, and I NEVER forget to plug my filter back in. I have 4 plugs I have to plug in everyday, I high a high water flow on the surface so feeding is a pita. I have to push my pup out of the way to plug everything back in (she loves watching them all day especially during eating)
i have a number of canister filters, when we got hit with a hurricane the power was off for 42 hours no issues with filters when power came back on.
Also water changes, I have a 30g and use buckets to fill
I was using a python to do a 50% on a 60-gallon and forgot to open the drain, and it went on hardwood floors
330 k subscribers! Congratulations!
I use the pulling of the cord out in the center of the room to keep myself from forgetting the filter too 🤣🤣
The amount of dumb things I've done I'm surprised I haven't set my house on fire or broke something.
I really like this video format
so i have 7 guppies and 2 small angels in my 20 gallon tank. And yesterday my dad decided to bring home a Oscar calling it a ‘beautiful tiger fish’. fml
This has to be one of the best videos I have ever seen, I have learned a lot thank you.
Last night while doing a water change I mistook the easy green bottle for the fritz complete bottle. Had to do another water change. Doh!
Great points. Couldn't agree more.
Hey :) I am new to your videos. This is the second one I've watched. Such great information! Thanks!
It never happened to me... But I have a secret: I'm autistic!
Same
gratz
Me too!
Yep
My son is 7 years old and is autistic wouldn't change him for the world stay safe
Loving the “friend” references😉
Made the mistake of putting a small crayfish in my 55g. She was perfect, beautiful, ate pest snails and leftover food... and 3 months later my cardinal tetras start to disappear...whoops
Cheap shot at gamers!! I am a gamer with gorgeous home and beautiful planted tanks! Thanks for another great video!
