I kept clouded archers for a bit, fully freshwater, with rainbows, empire gudgeons, panda garras, two spot catfish, some siamese algae eaters, and Dennison's barbs. They never ever bothered any other fish, even the smallest of the panda garras, and they were suuuuuper easy to feed floating pellets. I will say that rainbows aren't the best companion for them, not because of aggression or stress, but because the archers will eat larger pellets that the rainbows can choke and die from. Ask me how I know...
Snuffers was a fire eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia), and was one of the favorite parts of my job when I was there. He was pretty blind towards the end, so we just made sure to feed him his cocktail shramps in the same spot so he could find them. What a sweet little puppyfish.
@8:10 I kept a pair of Archers for a stretch. One died, and the other one became very skittish once it was alone. Water changes were extremely stressful on it, as it would jump, flail and run into the side of the tank! I eventually had to rehome it to a place with others of its own kind. I recommend groups, as this offers much comfort to individual fish.
Yahoo! A Wet Spot video!! Chelsea, I like so many of the same fish you do 😁 I love Leporinus! I have never kept them as I can't provide the footprint I think they need. My largest tank is a 75 gal. We don't energy need to talk about how much I loved the Puffers that were shown 😍
Against multiple sources of advice, I've got both the ghost knife and the fire eel, and both are housed in a 4ft x 2ft (different tanks) footprint. I know they get big, but neither species really swims around much, so I'm not guilt ridden over not giving them a 6ft or more footprint. If I need to upgrade later, I'll adjust as necessary.
Eels move quite a bit . I had a fire eel and a ghostie on a long 270 ltr tank , for about 7 years. Then they did struggle to turn a bit so I sold them to someone with 1000ltr . Sad to see them go . If I ever get another one I will wait until I have my own 1000ltr
@snikerdoodlefox3979 Mine do not. They just hide in the rock until feeding time. Heck, more than half the time, even at feeding time, the ghost knife stays hidden. In fact, I've gone months without seeing it at all. With the eel eventually going into a 150 gallon (568 liters) and the ghost knife going into a 120 gallon (454 liter), that gives me time to figure it out. But, like I said, if the time comes when I think their quality of life is suffering and I can't improve it personally, I will find them better homes.
I sold all of those in the pet department at Walmart in 1999 but also sold mudskippers, a teacup stingray, discus, cicelian worms, puffers, pirhanna, monos silver dollars, anablep 4 eyed fish. We had an open book from the vendor as part of a pilot program so sold whatever looked cool. Corporate came down because they said we were losing money. After that they rolled out the mars setups to other stores but limited the selection to guppies, goldfish, and more common fish.
That's wild, my one experience with Walmart fish was 30 years ago when I was just getting into the hobby again and no one was working the tanks so I found a staff member who clearly had special needs and told him I needed help with the fish, he looked around and went that direction, I pointed to the fish and showing his lack of experience with fish did not reach for a net, but instead tried with his hand, I noped out of there and haven't been back.
I remember seeing them at my Petsmart as a kid and thinking they were just so cool! Glad k didn’t get them tho 😅 But I drew pictures of them! Definitely one of my favorite fish
3 fire eels in a 125 also. About 8 inches each, so they're young. So far so good. We'll see how it goes as they get older. Mine eat blood worms and shrimp from my hand.
Be Careful with the butterfly fish they can jump 36inches vertically with no run up I have African butterfly fish mine only eat crickets but that's my fault I love to see them Hunt They are beautiful
What would be the tank size if you wanted to keep a BGK till it hopefully reached full size? I know they normally dont make it to be that large and can live in a 125 for years, but what would a 20+ inch one need?
In my opinion they really need at least a 200 gallon, closer to 300+. You’ll read some mixed thoughts, but given their potential size and assuming they actually max out, that’s what I’d do for them. They’ll be mostly dormant and hidden during the day, but will happily use all the real estate of a 200-300 gallon at night.
the butterfly fish looks like a lionfish by the way a little girl did a science fair in Florida for school and made the news and scientific community took it over she took lionfish and drip acclimated them with fresh water at different speeds now they are looking in rivers for them and the scientists will see how much freshwater they can take so maybe one day you can have a real life freshwater only lionfish

My ghost knife was super shy almost never came out but was super sweet and I could hand feed it no problem.
I love butterflies too. Keep them in groups with cover and tight lids.

Hope they do well!
@@garg4531 Me too, but I can always rehome them if necessary. I just hope it won't be necessary.
Well yeah they barely move around so idk why anyone would kick a stink up about it

3:20 if you have a guppy colony like i did they are great as a method to cull, for pufferfish o my favorite i have own was a dragon puffer(humpback)
The Ghost Knife gets its name from the old clear plastic tubes they used to sell as a hide for these fish.

I've got 8 african butterflies, 7 freshwater archers and 3 Peacock eels in a 125. Love these guys.
Incredible fish room! How many types of fish do you have in total?
Love ghost knifes, I had a few when I first got into the hobby back in the day.
I remember seeing them at my Petsmart as a kid and thinking they were just so cool!

Your shirt is awesome lol
Thank you! Straight outta 1983, they just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Would love more info about the type of gobi seen in the video but sadly can't find anything about those 😢
I never knew fish could be so hateful lol. Sooo cooool
looking for small eel that can stay in 20 gal tank that will eat baby guppies and shrimp but leave adults alone
3:18 i feel bad for him, he just sits there in the corner for the entire clip
They are ambush predators, this is what they do in the wild. Sit and wait
I trained my Eel to unclog the toilet!
