I agree most tiktok creators do want just to get mass viewing without the animals welfare in mind. I do make some clickbait TikTok/ UA-cam shorts videos but I never harm any of my animals as I don't want to promote fish harm or lose my animal activities license.
I remember when I was a kid my Dad’s friends wife had a fishtank and her fish kept dying. My Dad kept fish(yes with an under gravel filter old school)😊 so she asked him what she was doing wrong. She then said I keep it really clean. I clean the tank and all the gravel with dish liquid. My Dad audibly sighed then calmly explained to her why that was wrong wrong wrong. This was the 80s. She actually felt so bad. She ended up not only learning how to properly care for her aquarium but found a book on aquatic plants. Being a florist she took to it, well, like a fish to water. Happy ending ❤ Nowadays, with the internet. With abundant information an instant away. There is no excuse for being a terrible pet owner.
So you kind of summed up the problem here. Your neighbor was able to get correct information because she recognized and asked someone successful at it. The Internet is powered by content, not accurate content. So with the Internet, someone is more likely to get wrong information sorted by popularity. That's the problem.
Not too far from my humble beginnings. My aunt bred neon tetras for the LFS when I was single digits old. I loved sitting in her fish room watching the fish. I always wanted a tank but couldn't afford it. Skip to me an adult with kids. My son won some gold fish from the fair. We rushed out to wally world for a tank. Bought a ten gallon kit and some black gravel. First fish died in a week. Second died in three. The tank was always dirty and cloudy. I felt terrible they died. Knew I could do better. I started watching youtube videos to educate myself. Twenty years and 5 dirted planted tanks later I say I did better.
I work at a LFS. We frequently get people repeating the remove the fish, take out all the water, scrub everything down, and refill nonsense. They must be watching this kind of stink.
Really sad when you think about it. People are just too lazy or stupid to research how to keep an aquarium. Then the fish die and they are a complete loss. Poor fish.
I remember doing 100% full water changes, cleaning the gravel around 1994 with no knowledge about beneficial bacteria and all that.. this was way before internet age.. aquarium books were so hard to come by.. and if you got it it was just fish identification. Maybe it was in a part of the world where the fish sellers did not share vital info. Now i talk about how not to keep aquarium.. i am now glad i have this info and sharing.. making one aquarium safer at a time.. tick tock is just not for me..
Back in the day, in era without internet, I found information in the library and specialized magazines. Most important things: water quality was different as today and the fish more hardy. Now, everybody talks about everything and all are experts! P.S.: Starting fishkeeping in 1985
Been there done that. Totally cleaning gravel and tank then sticking the fish straight in. Have no idea how I didn't lose fish everytime. Certainly know better now.
I remember my dad keeping an aquarium when I was small. This was the 90s too. It's balanced and had clear water. No filter whatsoever. Somebody influenced my dad to clean it constantly to make it cleaner. He did that, ended up with some dead fish afterwards. Also there's us children who keep overfeeding the fish, making the water dirty. Then my dad felt it's just too much hassle he stopped the aquarium hobby 😢 I felt bad now.
Most people remember having fish as kids but not the behind the scenes work, so when 10,000 tic too videos say “you can do xyz with your fish tank, but you say don’t do it, you are out voted. Thank you for helping educate people.
I was literally thinking about this. I had a fish tank when I was like 14 and never even thought about maintenance/changing the tank water. My parents always did that part when they had a piranha tank, so I guess I assumed they did it for mine, but I never saw it. I just fed them.
@@whiteboy7thstsfanboy that’s how it was for me growing too. I saw a beautiful 55 gallon tank but didn’t know anything other than wanting to add fish😂. We had a really cool science program at my middle school that let us bring in fish to the class aquarium… if we researched it, gave a report to the class about it and everything was compatible. I learned a lot about fish there.
Yeah my mom used to have fish tanks with her former husband. He cleaned everything with soap and water once a week. I tried explaining that this was wrong when my mom warned me how hard keeping fish is. She thought I was completely ignorant. Sooo yeah, some people just refuse to learn new things.
Those poor fish! Oh my. You did give me a giggle, but it's very unfortunate people don't bother to learn anything about fish keeping before they get fish.
One of my clients recelty bought an small aquarium from me. I told him specifally "pls, fill tank with tap water, use bacteria after some time, turn filter on and wait at least 3 weeks before you buy a fish". I recommended a fish store where he could buy a beautiful betta or something. I told the store owner that such a client will arrive soon. Then my friend told me that my client actually arrived there, watched fishes and instantly bought one, the same day he bought a tank from me :) Ppl are dumb, they won't change, not now, not ever.
There is no excuse for this. With your channel and all the other informative channels, there is so much information for people to find the correct information for being a successful fishkeeper.
Don’t hold back John it’s not healthy. 🤠 My tanks is dirty, not due laziness, rather busted my arm. I am showing my wife how to clean the tanks correctly. Now where did I put that firehouse?
My grandma maintained a trio of guppy tanks, and kept them until her grandkids relocated. It was a regular chore for the kids to do proper water changes and clean the box filters every other week. She had a checklist. Now this was in the late 70's and early 80's. Pretty sure we all still remember the basics.
agreed with you on each and every point John, that the majority only has the Aquarium but they aren't fishkeepers, and TikTok has become a loathing shit, full of misinformation...
Wow, this is incredibly annoying when you see people treating their tanks like this. Obviously, they don't understand anything about aquarium life and the biological aspects of fish keeping. Thanks for sharing. It's very worrying😢
Thank you John for keeping your cool! Even though I could see you hurting. I was in disbelief of how people can be this daft. This again was a really good informative video 👍👍🐟🐠🐡
When i was a kid , i used to keep a 10 gallon aquarium, however my mom would make me empty it into a bucket and wash and bleach the aquarium and put the fish back in , ( she wanted them to die,,, pretty cruel huh.).
I am relatively new to fish keeping having my tanks for about two years now and i am still learning new things almost every day and i still make mistakes... but damn, watching this made me feel good about my fish keeping skills..
WOW John. It’s mindblowing the idiots out there and even more so how many people may believe that stuff! Thank goodness I’ve learned everything from YOU!
This gave me a good idea, since John taught me the critical nitrogen cycle many years ago. That was so important and I'm so grateful for that to this channel. The idea is to repost the critical fish education videos once a month. It would boost views, but mostly help the new and uneducated fish keepers. Just a thought...
I remember cleaning everything, salt water, bleaching the dead coral, yeah, good times....now I have a planted tank that I do nothing with, and it's the healthiest tank I've ever had...undergravel filter and no external filter...
Just wow I have been into fish business for four years now and when I started out my tank never got that dirty I had no experience whatsoever. The only thing I can remember actually doing is changing most of the water every three days I think that’s what actually kept my fish alive . I mean, I don’t know if they’re doing those videos for views or they just really have no clue but common sense definitely goes along way !! Here I am with no experience started out with a 10 gallon struggling to keep the water crystal clear, but it never got green because I changed it every three days without experience. Then I moved up to a 29 gallon slowly water was crystal clear beautiful with no experience. Then I moved up to a 125 gallon planted aquarium. I always wanted to planted aquarium but wasn’t successful with the 29 gallon but now professional and it’s been four years crystal clear beautiful view canisters on there not over feeding and yeah successful now.
Not only you can break the tank or accidentally pour the fish out when you're dumping water. You can also injure yourself, you're handling a glass box, even if not shattered, the corners, if enough pressure is given, can cut you.
I don't even have TikTok!!! I will admit, I used to do 95% water changes, while scrubbing down my decorations, filters, rinsing out the filter sponges until they were clear, adding new, clean water, then using water conditioners to get rid of the chlorine in the water. SORRY, I didn't know any better. I had NEVER been told about beneficial bacteria until I saw it in one of your videos. I'd put in a few plants (they always ended up melting) for decoration... never really gave it any thought that they would help the nitrate cycle and help with fish poop. My fish would still live for about 2-3 years, even with me doing it wrong. Now that I know better, I bet I can keep them alive even longer!
i have a 55 gal, i only have 4 blk skirts, 5 daino`s, 3 neos ( i need more ) , 6 cory cats, mixed and 1 goldfish . i vac my sub top gravels weekly , sometimes every three days. scrub my glass inside and out once a week, rinse my hang on filter, monthly . I think i do need to replace them. but kind of afraid to dont want to crash my tank. don't it once. it cycled now, and i do see green and brown algae grow, i do clean it off bi weekly. i just top off my water . i do test on the water every three days to a week , light on up to 10 hours daily, on a low setting and i do have my UV light running for three days out of the week .. just to try to keep the algae grow in check. i dont have any algae eaters or shrimp. my water is clear, pass test. but the PH is 7.6 to 7.85, cant get it lower. i tryed the chem PH down and it has not changed .. so im not gonna mess with that to much, just set teh fish in it bag when i get more, let them chill for 15 minutes add in a little water over a hours time from tank and GO with it ..
Sir. The first video. That great system of cleaning everything…scrubbing everything… does that work for 50gal tanks or is that reserved for fools with too many fish in too small a tank… Great video…. Truth.
Its sad, but you are correct, most people who have aquariums are about the "pretty" and not about the fishkeeping. Unfortunately, a large portion of our local shop business relies on this behavior for their success. The local aquarium shops (who do love fish) try to train them, but it doesn't work. These non-fishkeeper folk lose their fish in a small number of months and they need to replace them. the shops win. What would happen if these people got smart and their fish began to live for years!? I think its these people that support my local shop, I know its not me because I have 10 tanks and haven't had space for new fish in well over a year. Its a terrible thing, but our hobby survives on a double-edged sword. How do we train these folks and help our local stores succeed?
Unfortunately when i first got fishes over 20 years ago i also made the same mistake in cleaning out the entire tank and decor smh. Thank goodness i started researching and educating myself. What im getting at is that all these videos seem to come from people who failed to do the proper research like i did. Back then when i started the Internet wasnt what it is today so there is absolutely no excuse for people today, all the info you need is right at your finger tips.
So don't smack me, but I once used a dish sponge that I didn't realize had been pre-treated with detergent to wipe algae off the side of my betta tank, while the fish was in it. I thought for sure the betta would die, but he was ok. Now I only use those scrubby type sponges that aren't sold in plastic packaging and never have anything added to them.
15:16 I can't stand it when ppl use basic water conditioner to try and "fix" all their problems. What about water testing kits? A gravel vacuum and regular small water changes? A maintained heater and filter? An established bacterial growth? 😭
Yes it sure was fun. But you did add some humor that I had to laugh at. LOL. Hey I really like the woman dumping her tank water in the sink. When she got to the black stuff she started GAGGING. LMAO. Did you miss that? Cause you lost a golden opportunity with that one. She did try to hide it, but I seen it. And yes, I laughed my ass off.
Most of us started out like this. I was 16-18 years old when I had my first aquarium (about 25 years ago) and I did some barbaric things when I looked back on how I "cared" for my fish. 100% water changes every month, scrubbing every inch of the tank, rinsing the colored gravel and using fake plants and buying new filter media every time the carbon filter got too dirty. Yep, I was these people in the video when I was a teen 😂 Don't judge them, spam them with enough advice in their comments and hope they read and listen for the sake of their fish
This is the very reason why l promote the recommended fish keeping aquarium channels on tiktok. We need to drown out these rubbish channels on this platform as they are sending out the incorrect message's. ❤
👍🤠 Long before social media (UA-cam) I knew nothing about how to keep an aquarium. I used to empty my 125 take it outside and scrub it with Simple Green. I cringe now thinking about that.
Its literally common sense unless u were really really young(like below 7 y/o which i believe u weren't) social media(youtube) isn't old enough that before it, people wouldnt have the slightest idea about what household cleaning chemicals are made of and how harmful they could be for humans let alone fishes! Sorry but to me thats just an excuse for being ignorant
We had a tank when I was a kid (in the 70's). My mother cleaned it like clockwork once a month...by emptying it completely & washing everything with bleach & then putting it back together. She never could figure out why her fish kept dying, since she was keeping the tank spotless and "clean."
I only do a 50% water change & siphone some of the substrate, about once every 3 or 4 months - Group of Neocaridina Shrimp, 1 Nerite snail & some Malaysian Trumpet Snails, with a few plants & a pinch of spirulina powder once every 3 days - i also use some driftwood, dried banana leaves & 1 boiled young nettle leaf every 3 days, never had to "clean" a tank once
It makes me wonder how these people got this far in life if they can keep living, breathing (you know what i mean) creatures and never once in their lives doubt themselves or even get CURIOUS enough to just Google something about them. On top of that, not only do they not do that; they find it appropriate to pollute the rest of society with their ignorance.
As a person who does weekly water changes, i would absolutely die if my tank got so dirty, there is so much information on UA-cam, it takes alittle time to understand fish tanks, if your not all in in this hobby, not willing to give your fish buddies the best homes, the best living conditions possible, then please don't have fish, fish deserve better, just because they cant talk, doesn't mean they cant feel
John I couldn't agree with you more! I tried a couple of times too put out some real fish keeping videos on TikTok and as far as they got where my family viewing them which was great you know that's fabulous there are times where I think social media outlets are awesome for sharing information but then there are times when the misinformation gets more attention than the correct information does and that's a pain in the butt Thank you for making this video It was great
The sad part is what the fish had to endure - even the cleaning process was barbaric. This same kind of folks cry 'cruelty' and 'they should be s..t' when they watch those commercials for neglected dogs.
As a fish keeper, who cleans poop and uneaten food each day, that cleans, that tried maintaining crystal clear water and thriving fish this was hurtful to watch 😢!
I recently bought (more like rescued) a 14 inch common wolf fish, she came with her tank and let me tell you I pretty much could not see into the glass it was that dirty the algae and what looked to be dried up blood worms when we finally got her and her tank in the house the stuff off the sides of the tank was black !!! Like it looked like motor oil it was that black and the filters had like 2inches of poop on them, the guy refused to do anything cuz he was scared of the wolf fish bitting him, don’t get a fish you can’t handle
People ask why my tanks are so clean and I have no answer. I change the water once or twice a month, rarely clean the glass.. my shrimp, Daniel tank I never vacuum the gravel. There's alot of junk under the gravel I just don't disturb it lol
I've been working on a walstead tank my next step is to upgrade it from a 10gal to a 40 so i have more room for plants maybe another dwarf fish species
I have a 10gal tank next to my kitchen sink. Its planted and has shrimp and snails in it. I just use a small 1/4 hose and drain some of the water directly into the sink. But i definitely don't empty the tank out completely. I change out maybe a 1/4 of the water.
When I first started playing around with fish I actually found the pet shop very helpful.. my first tank I got for free 100L and it was filthy putrid brown and stank!! So I actually did completely empty the tank and replace the gravel I kept the ornaments though and I refilled it and let it go for a month it went all green and foggy and I was worried that the fish was unsafe but I went and asked the pet shop and got some information did a 50% water change added some conditioner and some clarify added a sponge filter with air stone and now it's clear and has been a year and 6 cleanings and all is well.. I do have a mix of fish 2 of which can be bullies (1x dwarf blue guwami and 1x angel fish) they only bully new fish of the same breeds though.. my fancy goldfish and panda cats are all very happy.. I have 5 Cory cats 2x pandas 2x bronze 1 red eye albino all are doing well and are 2 inches each and I have 4x fancy goldfish all are very happy and I won't add more fish in this tank but am looking for another 100L tank and 3 dividers to house some betas but they will war so I will need to separate the tank into 3 parts as the kids want 1 each of different colours 😂.. I also found google search to be fairly right!! Not everything is perfect information but a good 90% was very good information so there is that.. I'd never trust tictok for anything other than a few laughs that's all it's good for.
my 2ft tank crashed couple days ago and started losing fish. i found when i went to right the tank there were 2 fish that died and had been wedged under some plants that set off a ammonia spike. yes i emptied the tank but only lightly vac the sand to keep some of the good bacteria in there cause it was a 100% water change. but now its back up and running it will have no fish for next 2 weeks or so to let water cycle before i put a pair of neon blue acaras in there to do their thing and have baby acaras.
Well to be fair to them, if their starter heater, light and filter kept their things alive for 2 years why do you think they would change what they are doing?
Those TikTok videos are so shocking!!! How can these people do this to their beautiful fish? And what I'm wondering is: how do they come up with cleaning the fish tanks in those ways... Who told them to do it that way. Or would they have thought of it that way themselves....What a disaster! And so many views they have, so many other people will do it that same way😭 Oh my goodness! This hurts😞
We currently live in a world were everyone's "opinion" is valid, and is held to the same degree of credibility as actual fact; and the people dominating it can't wrap their head around the reality of science - that it is data that needs to be ever re-confirmed and statistically proven (not absolut) and that the conclusions needs to be updated as we accumulate more data and learn new things. Pier Review matters! Just because the "truth" is not absolut does not make it less true and we can also never prove a negative. And that for some reason have all these people totally missundertand the concept of research and why some should do the talking and others do the listening. Instead have all these self proclaimed experts with no humility, no standars. It angers me every time. Yeah, I am old and grumpy.
I’m new to this a Mom here getting into it for my 7yr old special needs child. Is the reason why some of these tanks are so dirty is because they have too many fish in the tank? We have a 10gal for glofish we’re preparing for. I was thinking 5 glofish and maybe 2 algae eaters? How’s that sound? Btw I worked as a veterinarian technician for many years so I plan to keep them in human conditions and use them as life lessons for my son to understand how to take care of animals (or fish) lol
I checked out Grant Chase's Fish channel on UA-cam. His tic-tok of cleaning his friend's tank was the good one. He's a young guy who makes mostly shorts. He's mostly a native fish enthusiast, using one of his tanks as a place to enjoy growing out a bass for his backyard pond. When the bass gets big, he releases it into his pond. He's a good fish keeper if you understand what he's doing. But he's not doing tropical fish, or at least that's not what I see as his main thing. Oh, and he likes turtles, too. Some tropical fish keepers might be horrified. But if you accept his project, he's doing a decent job with it, and he's having fun. His fish seem just fine. In my opinion, that's the important thing.
Ugh I feel your passion. I’m a dog trainer and TikTok has the absolute WORST information. 🤦♀️ I was watching this video of yours and can literally feel your blood boiling because I get it. Thank you so much for being credible and calling out the BS.
Personally, I stopped doing water changes. It cost me so many fish and plants. I just top of as needed. I always have live plants. The more, the better. Plus, I add a filter that is overkill for the size. While a tank will adjust over time, it is more important to just leave them alone and let the system balance out. Also, I have different cleaner fish and a variety of snails. This helps keep the tank naturally clean. Never scrap, scrub, or clean a tank. Let nature clean it and keep it healthy. Plus, fish do not live in crystal clear water. So what we find disgusting or unsightly is not necessarily bad for the fish. Plus, never use additives and chemicals. If you are chasing problems with chemicals, you are not addressing the cause of the problem, only the symptoms.
@12:00 Good on Grant for being the only other adult in the room afa proper aquarium maintenance, but in no case should there be anything over 30% maximum afa water changes. In severe cases like this, 20% changes over a period of a two week period, every other day, is less stressful to the fish.
After watching that I am so thankful that years ago I found you, Cory, and Jason right after I was nominated to bring home a very old betta that was not doing well for Christmas week while the college I worked for was closed. I now have 4 tanks and am a frequent shopper of your almond products. Thank you for teaching me how to do this the right way.
13:54 oh brother not her.... Many of us are trying to educate her and trying to encourage her to get a bigger tank or get rid of some fish. SHE HAS SAID THEY'RE FINE AND HAPPY IN THERE!! SHES DOUBLING DOWN ON THAT STATEMENT TOO SHE NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL OR SOMETHING!!!🤦
So I won't lie. I have my 55 gal aquarium set up. I have 2 fish in at the moment. A jack Dempsey and a tan and brown catfish. I don't know what kind it is. There used to be a pleco that lived in there. But unfortunately he passed. And ever since I have been battling algae. I scrup the tank with a designated sponge. And just got this cool magnet scrubby thing that does a lot better job. But I'm still not able to get all the algae off the glass. Any tips would be highly appreciated.
@sandidsaman7723 because my jack Dempsey is mean lol. She bullies anything I put in there to death. She eats the snails lol. I need to find a really big pleco so he can hold his own. But they are hard to come by in my area
I'm having this tank cleaning problem with my wife! She thinks it needs to be cleaned and scrub every month. I know her plants will not survive but she will learn the costly way.
Re the start rite ,in the uk pets at home told me it works immediately but wait a couple of days before I put any fish in. It’s only when I went to Dobbies and spoke to the dudes who work in the dedicated aquarium shop there that I learned about the cycling of a fish tank so I did a fish less cycle . Took my water in, let them tell me when it was okay to put in any fish and it was them that told me all the start rite does is remove the chlorine, thry told me about the good and bad bacteria, how to wash my filter sponge etc . Pets at home are semi clueless Dobbies aquarium shop knew everything
Mangrove Jack is found in Australian estuaries. Fishermen tend to catch this fish to eat.. My debate is not feeding the fish as he needs to the fish to keep the Magrove Jack alive. My question is, is there an ideal aquarium fish tank size to the fish.? Is there no such thing as an ideal aquarium size?
25 years ago before there was UA-cam I had a 75 gallon with two Oscars and a common pleco. I would let it run until it got disgusting and would do exactly what these people did. I would take the fish out of the tank and remove all the water and decor. I would take the tank outside and wash it with the water hose. I would add water straight from the water hose into the tank and immediately put the fish back in without dechlorinator. The fish did seem a little stressed but they survived. If I did that to any of my tanks now they will all be dead.
I honestly did not know plecos are carnivorous. What do you feed them. I’ve had mine in my 50 gallon for months. He gets wafers and absolutely is glued to the drift woods pieces..
Oh boy 😮! I mean I wasn’t perfect when I started keeping fish and I did have rainbow gravel 😆. Yet, I knew not to clean everything and rinse out the gravel ( thank goodness I found your videos just in time ). My head is hurting now after watching this 😂
@@Valkyreann well to be fair if you get your tanks ecosytem into a good balance you dont really have to change the water at all, just top it off as some of it evaporates. But if you have all the right stuff going on, plants, bacteria, micro-organisms, a bunch of things like snails, shrimps etc its usually self sustaining.
I Knew nothing about fish other than salt vs fresh before I let my daughter win a goldfish, I am so lucky I got into reptiles first to learn that each species requires extra care and that lead me to do more research on fish, thank you for your knowledge
The only time I ever get people saying they don't know how to clean or look after fish is when a partner has died. Had a lady in not that long ago wanting to know how to clean the external filters on her husbands pond after he had passed away. One of the best setups of a Koi pond I had seen in ages all made by him.
Maybe I'm old, but I just never got the reasoning for Tik Tok. This pretty much sums up why. The sad part is that with that many views people probably think that is how to clean your fish tank.
I'm currently running a 10 gallon but upgrading to a 30. I have two young plecos (8 weeks ish ) Are they okay to start out in a smaller tank and upgrade quickly ? Or have I ruined their lives already
So I do have a 20 gallon aquarium and before I used to be so careless with cleaning but a few days later I did a water change not how those other people did the trash way but I did it the better way so I used a clean aquarium sponge and wiped down the whole tank and the there was no more of that nasty green algae but my water however wasn’t green it was just a bit cloudy and then I took all the old decorations out because they stank and I replaced them with new ones but however I have 5 tetras, 2 angelfish 3 platys and that’s all of the fish I have and now I am very responsible with cleaning the tank now with the aquarium cleaning sponge.
What makes me upset is the fact that people can have this nasty water, and also way too many fish in way too small tanks (ie the goldfish and angelfish), and yet their fish survive. But then I spend months researching and preparing my tank to perfection just for my fish to die after not even a year.
I did the same thing with my a married buddy of mine. She have a 40 gallon aquarium I step in to her and 85 gallon aquarium. Though have 3 Affenpinchers and winter white hamster family.

Do you sell the water conditioner that improves my waters Ph? 😅
Hey what size are those bicher's that you have in the background tank
Bichirs go to the bottom and rest there for a little while, their fins are like legs... they so adorable... (Also a red wolffish)
They are big, aren't they?@@wynbertvk
I despise tiktok…. The majority of people on there are just out for views and clout… fish or whatever be damned
I agree most tiktok creators do want just to get mass viewing without the animals welfare in mind. I do make some clickbait TikTok/ UA-cam shorts videos but I never harm any of my animals as I don't want to promote fish harm or lose my animal activities license.
Ok
Ya...Tictok is the problem...not the individual
Tic tok is Chinese spy software
As if UA-cam is any different 😂😂😂. If a person is creating content and uploading it to any social media, that is the aim
I remember when I was a kid my Dad’s friends wife had a fishtank and her fish kept dying. My Dad kept fish(yes with an under gravel filter old school)😊 so she asked him what she was doing wrong. Those are the same people that will buy baby strollers and cribs for little dogs, but will throw a betta into a tiny vase.

Now i talk about how not to keep aquarium.. i am now glad i have this info and sharing.. making one aquarium safer at a time.. tick tock is just not for me..
I had tanks in 1986-1996 I don’t know how we managed as well as we did with so little info
This is the problem when social media is the only research that people do. These are mistakes I made when I was 10, not 20+.
What so when people say “do your research” they aren’t heading to their local library to check out books written by experts ?!? 😂😂😂
well google aint social media@@angiebear8727
@@angiebear8727im surprised you made it this far in life if your only source of information is TikTok and/or the library...
@@angiebear8727please don't tell me your ONLY source of gathering information is tiktok and/or a library💀
Yeah my mom used to have fish tanks with her former husband. He cleaned everything with soap and water once a week. I tried explaining that this was wrong when my mom warned me how hard keeping fish is. She thought I was completely ignorant. Sooo yeah, some people just refuse to learn new things.
She killed all the fish
Those poor fish! Oh my.
You did give me a giggle, but it's very unfortunate people don't bother to learn anything about fish keeping before they get fish.
I started reporting and blocking all those videos and channels. All this, the sheer ignorance and idiocy, it borderlines animal abuse.
It more than borderlines....
Then my friend told me that my client actually arrived there, watched fishes and instantly bought one, the same day he bought a tank from me :)
Ppl are dumb, they won't change, not now, not ever.
There is no excuse for this. With your channel and all the other informative channels, there is so much information for people to find the correct information for being a successful fishkeeper.
Don’t hold back John it’s not healthy. 🤠
My tanks is dirty, not due laziness, rather busted my arm. I am showing my wife how to clean the tanks correctly. Now where did I put that firehouse?
I think this is one of my favourite videos that's John has done for a while, you can just see him screaming internally 😂
I love you John!!
i dont think many people knew what pH is...and sometimes it scares me
My grandma maintained a trio of guppy tanks, and kept them until her grandkids relocated.
I FEEL SO BAD FOR ALL THOSE POOR FISH, they deserve to be kept by normal people
When i was a kid , i used to keep a 10 gallon aquarium, however my mom would make me empty it into a bucket and wash and bleach the aquarium and put the fish back in , ( she wanted them to die,,, pretty cruel huh.).
I am relatively new to fish keeping having my tanks for about two years now and i am still learning new things almost every day and i still make mistakes... but damn, watching this made me feel good about my fish keeping skills..
same here😄
Dude that is horrible. Thx for exposing those bad behavior.
Not only you can break the tank or accidentally pour the fish out when you're dumping water.
You can also injure yourself, you're handling a glass box, even if not shattered, the corners, if enough pressure is given, can cut you.
I'm having my morning coffee watching your video this morning - I have several tanks to clean today, and this made me shake my head. 😮
That great system of cleaning everything…scrubbing everything… does that work for 50gal tanks or is that reserved for fools with too many fish in too small a tank…
Great video…. Truth.
It doesnt work for any aquarium that intends to sustain life
I have just three words oh my God
I gave myself a headache face palming myself watching this video 🥴🥴🥴🥴😵😵. TIC TOK is just a waste of time. 🙄
The reason I enjoy your channel is the authenticity you bring. You’re a treasure of a person. It’s a shame there aren’t more like you.
Not once... ever... have any of my three tanks looked as bad as any of these tanks. People need to get educated. Great video by the way.
These people make me look like a aquarium pro lol 🙄
Yep, I was these people in the video when I was a teen 😂
Don't judge them, spam them with enough advice in their comments and hope they read and listen for the sake of their fish
Its literally common sense unless u were really really young(like below 7 y/o which i believe u weren't)
social media(youtube) isn't old enough that before it, people wouldnt have the slightest idea about what household cleaning chemicals are made of and how harmful they could be for humans let alone fishes!
Sorry but to me thats just an excuse for being ignorant
Thank you for all your advice. This has helped me really enjoy my fish and my planted tanks.
The fact people filmed their stupidity is hilarious😅
..to the cost of innocent lives who never had a choice other than being tortured..
.
Thanks for doing what your doing! Your channel was a huge resource for me when I started fish keeping.
Its... so much harder to take everything out and scrub the substrate, walls, and decor....
Wow, this was really entertaining!
(This isn't sarcastic btw I just liked the video)
As a crazy fishkeeper, who also happens to be a tiktoker, I would never use my tanks for content if it involves neglecting them 😢😢
Hey great video John I have been you for so long. All the way back to KG tropical first podcast. Way way back🎸🇺🇸
Oh my word. I think if I was on the tictok, I would burst a blood vessel. Thank you for saying it how it was, you`ve got a new subscriber. 🙂
I tried a couple of times too put out some real fish keeping videos on TikTok and as far as they got where my family viewing them which was great you know that's fabulous there are times where I think social media outlets are awesome for sharing information but then there are times when the misinformation gets more attention than the correct information does and that's a pain in the butt Thank you for making this video It was great
Idiots that don't have a clue are not exclusive to fish keeping. You can pick just about any subject
@KGTropicals Pro tip for you. If you want to know the size of the tank, count the number of 5 gallons jug you need to fill it up.
When they've had the tank for 2 years, but they still have the starter filter, heater & no light i'm like hmm.....
I’m new to this a
Mom here getting into it for my 7yr old special needs child.
Fish for thought has been doing this for years. So good.
Ugh I feel your passion. I’m a dog trainer and TikTok has the absolute WORST information. 🤦♀️ I was watching this video of yours and can literally feel your blood boiling because I get it.
Thank you so much for being credible and calling out the BS.
Preventative weekly maintenance way easier than monthly just like mowing your lawn.
@12:00
Good on Grant for being the only other adult in the room afa proper aquarium maintenance, but in no case should there be anything over 30% maximum afa water changes.

Since algae eaters or plecos did a better job before...why not buy another one?
Great to see what people are doing wrong and how to correct them.
Its all about education.
My head is hurting now after watching this 😂
I felt guilty for missing doing a 10% water change for a couple of weeks when I was ill. Now u feel much better now
once i didnt clean my tank for 6 months and the water was so clear and the fish and plants were thriving
I have two young plecos (8 weeks ish )
Are they okay to start out in a smaller tank and upgrade quickly ?
I’m one who favors more water turnover for filtration! I’m running FX6 on all my 5g snail tanks
Omg! These people should be prosecuted for animal cruelty and banned from keeping any animals for life.
When i do water change to my aquarium i dump it in our garden, our little unit has the most healthy, pretty flower garden😊
I did the same thing with my a married buddy of mine. She have a 40 gallon aquarium I step in to her and 85 gallon aquarium. Though have 3 Affenpinchers and winter white hamster family.
