I’ve been to a lot of places, both West and Eastern countries, China is one of the safest place in the world. Talk about dangerous, you can come to New York City, or go to the Bronx Harlem areas at night, you will know what’s dangerous. Just a couple months ago, there’s a woman got pushed down the subway track and got killed by a total stranger for no reason during the middle of the day, not even at night, it’s unfortunate to see the US becoming like this, but that is real. Also, I don’t feel safe to walk around Paris after the sun set by myself as well.
We were in Paris not long ago, a place where I lived 40 years ago. Now, also confirmed by a local French lady, the crimes were so bad and intolerable. So I refused to take the subway just to avoid being targeted. I have quite a few friends and relatives who had those bad experiences. In contrast, I felt so safe in China. Totally relaxed and enjoyed my travel so much!!!

I'm from Los Angeles. I'm glad to hear Japan is safe as well. As for Guangzhou->Shanghai->Beijing->Chongqing, it felt really safe. For big cities, this was quite surprising. We enjoy our travel so much more when we feel safe and our mind is at peace. In Beijing around 1:00am, where I had allowed my 17-year-old son to walk the street and enjoy his late-night snack. He walked for about 3 miles by himself. I would never allow this in Los Angeles or anywhere in Southern California. However, in Chongqing, a man took my umbrella and he ate my food, while I was in the bathroom. I noticed he was doing the same to other tables. He seems to be a "special need" person and did not exhibit a violent vibe. I let him keep my umbrella.

Props to you for making this video, we need more open-minded people like you in this world... For anyone wondering, this is Huacheng Square in Guangzhou, China!
Unless you are someone like that Somalia John guy, who goes around looking for trouble, otherwise China is very safe. Probably one of the safest in the world.
It's all true. Lived in Korea for over a decade, same for a lot of the East Asian country. You can walk around at night no worries. Leave your phone, laptop and wallet at a table in a cafe if you go to the bathroom. It's something the west will never have because of culture.
I can't open my front door in my area in Londonistan, it's famous for "Rolex" thieves. The two-tier policing and it being a stronghold of a particular tribe "helps" with the coppers appearing extra fast if something is amiss - unfortunately the police station is now closed... I have to avoid many parts of Londonistan because there can be shootouts, street gangs, dangerous groups and individuals, and kids with guns and machettes. And that's no joke. And no running down of Londonistan for the fun of it. Aaah, China? That's Heaven! I jaywalked, a traffic volunteer granddad haul me aside and gave a kind lecture on the danger. I sneakily chucked a sweet wrapper, a bunch of schoolkids ambushed me and gave me a sound scolding... Yes, that's infinitely better than taking all sorts of risks while gambling to stay alive in Londonistan - nearly everywhere! I won't be out unless with a big bunch of friends. How a world capital deteriorates, compared, China is a dream!

To be fair, in the U.S I'd say over 90% of all areas are safe to walk about at night. It all depends on where you are. You are probably right that over 99% of the areas in China are safe at night.
中国是很安全,但是还没安全到路不拾遗的地步,还是要有点儿警惕心的,我是一个中国人,这是善意的提醒。 China is very safe, but it is not so safe that no one will pick up anything on the road. We still need to be a little vigilant. I am a Chinese, and this is a friendly reminder.
@@胡汉三-k2r I agree. Especially now with foreign tourists and travellers visiting China, the demographics will change. I'd expect the police to work harder to maintain the same level of safety. Videos of antisocial behaviour is already appearing on social media; I'm recalling the westerner opening the door of a car while crossing a pedestrian crossing.
I used to visit Guangzhou for the Canton Fair which was a trade fair event held twice a year there. It was then very safe already, a lot of foreign visitors turning up there to enjoy the event. You can walk in the city center without any worries.
I’ve been to many cities and rural area in China. Been even to Shangri La a border between Tibet and China. China is amazing. So many things to see. People are nice and friendly. It’s one of the safest country to go to.
Western people who make negative comments about China are the first victims of this mental blindness. Despite criticizing our political leaders, they are simultaneously supporters of the reasons for the West's decline. And as many years of this downward trend have passed, it is almost impossible to make our societies and political systems fairer and without special favors for a small part.
I lived in Germany for almost 14 years,Germany or Europe was safer than china in the past. 10 years ago I dared to put my bag on the table in a public area in Berlin ,but not in guangzhou .now it’s completely reversed .😂😂😂😂in my childhood ,guangzhou is not a very safe city to be honestly, but we did a lot to change it .some people in the west just can’t believe that how much could changed in 20 years .

What i believe is when we human cannot earn enough to sustain our living, only then we will do any mean necessary to sustain our needs. So if our country is run by good govement and eveyone can earn a living, generally the crime rate will be low.
Cannot be more true about what you are feeling and saying. As a chinese living in New Zealand, I used to hear NZ is the safest place in the world. In the last 5-6 years time however, I have to say this is not a safe country anymore as burglary and looting are everywhere. The western society must see the true freedom is firstly built on safety of people.
Not too long ago it would have happened in China too. I have been living here in china for 22 years and when I first came such crime was rife - even people having their hand cut off by a passing motor bike just to steal their watch or whatever. I had my phone stolen from my back pack, someone cut a hole in my back pocket to try to steal what was there, and I had a wallet stolen from my bag. Now its different because people are richer but who knows, as the economy here gets worse there's plenty of people with less money. Hopefully it won't change.

I miss it, the good food, the lay back cultural (the old Cantonese culture). in 2019 just before the covid, I went holiday with my daughter to 甘肃,青海 and inner Mongolia. (everyone should check out these places. they have magnificent, endless natural scenery). we , 2 girls in a strange place, walked down the streets at 11pm, never worried about looked over our shoulders. all we did was eat eat eat and play play play. 😂 I was mad traveller 40 year ago before I left China. despite the whole country was under developed back then, I managed to visit many countrysides. Since I have experienced 2 different systems I think I have a better ideas of the advantage and disadvantages between the 2. but i can tell how much chinese people's living standards have improved within 35 years. I used to load up my luggage with gifts when I went back for visit and paid for the restaurant bills. those days are gone. what makes china so interesting for holiday because it includes tropical weather from south, minus 40 degrees from north, desert and grassland in inner Mongolia and xinjiang, and of course the world's highest mountain everest. every region has their own unique culture and language. Just like shanghainese and Cantonese, they will never understand each other if they speak their own local languages. hopefully I would restart my china adventure in the near future. good luck for whatever you are doing!
I have been in china many times and trained at shaolin temple and my mom was a English teacher in wuhan and Changsha and Beijing and wu’an and handan and shanghai. I never felt unsafe their . China is very misunderstood country
According to my personal experience, the biggest unsafe factor when walking on the streets of China is certainly not violent attacks or armed robberies(the probability of these things happening is quite low everywhere in China)but traffic accidents. From what I have witnessed, in most parts of China, people (both drivers and pedestrians) have extremely low awareness of traffic rules (if there is any at all).
Thanks Harvey for sharing! To all the silly people, if people are paid in China to look safe and happy. Does that mean we pay a lot of people in the west to look the opposite 🤔
Another safe city to visit is Moscow..just dont believe the western media told you about moscow. People there just mind their own business and easy to approach

Just subscribed what a great video, you are talking a lot of sense. I have been travelling to China for over 20 years I do business in China. The people are great, I have been to over 20 cities 10 I could name the rest I have forgot there names. China opened up for business when Hongkong was handed back before that you had to deal with an agent in Hongkong. China is great the people are great. It is safe friendly. Guangzhou is my hometown, I moved to California since I was 16, And now I’m 30+, in terms of safety, China is AT LEAST 100 times safer and I’m not exaggerating. In California, specifically in SF, Oakland, you can’t casually walk around after evening unless you are the one trying to rob ppl. Car windows got smashed, catalytic converter got stolen, you can smell marijuana everywhere. Homeless everywhere, so they can just pee anywhere. And yes the worst case scenario is you may get shot. Sure CA have better job opportunities, better weather, that’s pretty it
I've been to China, I've been outside at night, it's definitely very safe and the vibes of true living freedom is there in China, even at late night👍🫰✌️🤩
Love the video, been to China myself a few months ago and was very positively shocked. Do please keep in mind tho, this is not just Canton part of China. Visit anywhere in China and you will get a very similar experience. I've spent almost 3 weeks in Wuhan, beautiful architecture with light shows, people running and dancing by the river, flying kites, singing, eating food, kids playing on their skateboards and everyone being very, very friendly. People here in UK only know Wuhan from the Corona virus, and seem to think that it's some uncivilized village. It's not backwards, but, much of China is a bit tropical, which means viruses spread more easily - this has nothing to do with people being uncivilised or eating wild animals. If London become tropical one day, they would have to deal with epidemics every month from all the rotten food, trash and piss on the streets.
I am 40 years old and live in Guangzhou. I remember 25 years ago when I was a middle school student, I often walked out for late snack with friends at 0:00~1:00, and my parents never worried. We always took it for granted that it was safe to go out at night. At that time, surveillance cameras were not popular. Therefore, this is due to the social environment and has little to do with surveillance cameras. The cultures of the three East Asian countries of China, Japan, and South Korea, and maybe Vietnam also, do not like violence, rape, and robbery.

I've lived here in CN for nearly 10 years - It is the only country I can walk around anytime, anywhere with very little risk and this includes all the big cities. Public disputes occasionally happen, I just don't get involved 👍🏻
Based on my experience in China 2013/14 it's very safe, you could literally walk everywhere with your eyes closed at any time of the day/night. The only time it would be dangerous if you made a conscious decision to break the local laws or disrespect the culture. There is a dark underbelly of course but as a tourist/student etc. you're unilkely to get involved, more likely if you're in business etc.
I spent a year in China (GuangZhao) back in the late 90s. I felt safe. I never encountered any problem, day or night. The only other countries I feel as safe are Switzerland, Denmark, and Finland.
All those Europeans deriding China about its crime free society in their comments need a situational awareness of their own countries. The entire population of Europe is 746 million divided amongst 50 countries of their continent. Most of these countries had already achieved unprecedented economic transformation in the first phase of the industrial revolution between the 1780s and 1849. The population of China, a single country in Asia, is 1.4 billion people. It wasn't until the 1980's that the country started achieving economic transformation and in the short span of four decades has managed to give its people the economic and social security that surpasses that of Europe by leaps and bounds. And as for Canada and Australia, these two villages together have a population of 64 million which would fit in just two cosmopolitan cities of China. So Y'all just stop beating your withered old chests and pay China and its people their due respect, that is if you even know what the word respect means outside of your onw little universes.
6:42 ... not to say that this isn't a fair perspective. But I still have to question it, just the same. Perhaps in ways that are not so obvious, it's not as rosy a picture under the surface as one would think. That criminals will be caught easily in China as believable, and therefore extremely low crime rates are also believable, but during Covid we also saw some very shocking government policies there, where people were locked in their homes, and practically starved. I know people from China and that was not just western anti-Chin propaganda as far as I know. The thing is, there's pros and cons to everything. Materially, China looks like a rising nation with lots of brightness and material goods and prosperity (though we should also ask about rural China where none of these things may be true, perhaps). However, there is likely a darker side to China that Harvey does not convey. That monolithic uni-government sounds plausibly like something that contrasts favorably against the messy and often foolish process of democratic forms of government, but still, one wonders if our young host here really has enough perspective to judge the distinction well. And the tower of Sauron in the background is perhaps an unintended, yes potentially meaningful shadowing of my concerns about China. And yet, I have to say, it's definitely best to keep an open mind. In the west it is obvious our mass media has been hideously compromised by propagandists, and so the information we get here is most certainly tainted by unstated (yet obvious) agendas. So there is that. Anyway, I understand what Harvey is saying, and I admit, overall he may be right. On the other hand, I suspect he does not really see the full picture, and the dark side may be a bit darker than he realizes. Maybe.
Everyone around me thinks it is very sad that Americans and European countries need to carry guns all the time or worry about being robbed in public areas.

Guangzhou is the best city of China beside its safety, it's warm, it's open and it welcomes anyone whether you're rich or not, you can always find your own position in this beautiful city as long as you work hard.
I actually went to Guangzhou in mid-July for a four day trip, it was fun and there is an indoor ice-skating facility there, and it really gave me the vibe that I was in a snowy place (yes, there are snow in the facility). Also, there are a lot of surveillance in Guangzhou, I heard this from my parents who told me when we were on the trip, and I must confirm that to be true. But still, it is not safe to go out at night.
I totally agree. But china's foreign policy specifically on SCS is making PHILIPPINES, JAPAN, TAIWAN, SOUTH KOREA on the edge. china's bullying of PH fishermen within PH EEZ is terrible. China DISTORTS ALL details regarding their bullying at WPS. And.....china wants to invade Taiwan.
I live in this city and I can tell you walked a pretty long distance in this vlog. When people introduce how good London is, most Chinese will buy it and dream of visiting London one day; but every time I introduce how good Guangzhou is, I only get a skeptical facial expression and 'Really"?

Can confirm the U$ public transport fears. My kid once told me he refuses to ride the trams (in Portland OR) without a gun. How terrible must such a life be that one must so worry about their safety that they must be ready to...
China is def very very safe at whatever hours of the day. Chinese people don't look for a fight when they get drunk.
Yes of course that’s because China is a great place to live but living in Sweden is even better
China is safer than American
In China, drunken fights happen occasionally, nothing is absolute.
There are crimes and bad people in China too, but on an average day China is 1000 times safer than American.

Harvey leave your phone on the table and see how long it stays there in China it will be there when you get back in the uk will be gone in seconds
中国是很安全,但是还没安全到路不拾遗的地步,还是要有点儿警惕心的,我是一个中国人,这是善意的提醒。
China is very safe, but it is not so safe that no one will pick up anything on the road. We still need to be a little vigilant. I am a Chinese, and this is a friendly reminder.
I remember a blogger who did this test. You can search for it. But don't try. After all, 1.4 billion people can't all be good

@@胡汉三-k2r I agree. Especially now with foreign tourists and travellers visiting China, the demographics will change. I'd expect the police to work harder to maintain the same level of safety. I used to visit Guangzhou for the Canton Fair which was a trade fair event held twice a year there. It was then very safe already, a lot of foreign visitors turning up there to enjoy the event. You can walk in the city center without any worries.

Walking on the street at 10pm in Guangzhou is not a big deal. We do that EVERYDAY. It is very safe.
Not too long ago it would have happened in China too. I have been living here in china for 22 years and
when I first came such crime was rife - even people having their hand cut off by a passing motor bike
just to steal their watch or whatever. I had my phone stolen from my back pack, someone cut a hole in my
back pocket to try to steal what was there, and I had a wallet stolen from my bag. Now its different because
people are richer but who knows, as the economy here gets worse there's plenty of people with less money.
Hopefully it won't change.

oh it is the city I was born and brought up.

My son n his wife went holiday to Europe. At the end of the train journey his knapsack had disappeared from the rack. Camera passport etc all gone .
For Europeans and Americans, most of them live in The Truman Show, a Truman Show created by Western media.
Maybe.
