Great review and riding! I'm debating the R7,RS660 & MT09SP. Just heard that they're doing a R9! I'm holding off until they release that monster! My only issue with the RS660 is the reliability. Here in America, and where I'm moving to, dealerships will be few and far between. 75-80 miles for Aprilia shop only 10-15 for Yamaha (which are bulletproof).

The problem I see with this bike is the power characteristics being arse about face. I hope Yamaha makes an R9 as well. The MT-09 engine would be nice in a sports bike. The R7 looks cool but it's a bit too slow and under powered for me. My KTM SMC-R 690 is faster and better at every thing than the R7. Bit more power. Way more torque. And way lighter and more nimble. Also bit more expensive but not that much.
Yes” R7 can’t replace the mighty R6.. the R7 looks good but kinda disappointing to me is lack of electronics aid.. this thing can rival the RS660 if yamaha give R7 a proper electronic package..
Mightly R6 is still available in a track-only option. The R7 was never supposed to replace it. Yamaha wasn't going to invent a whole new model coding scheme when they already had the YZF series bikes, R-series bikes, and this fits in that scheme with their production.
Why bother with garbage electronics on a bike like this? The R7 - K.I.S.S. which is what Yamaha has done. Now tweak the engine, tune the suspension and have fun. Learn to ride instead of letting a computer do it for you. Some of my fastest country back road riding was on a RZ350 Yamaha - the chassis was like riding al dente pasta but man, could you ring that lovely parallel 2-Stroke Twin in the corners and fly through the twisties. Engine modes, last bike I had with them, ZX10R Gen4, I set to full power and left it there. Traction control was always set to 1, couldn't be faffed having to turn it off every ride. Now back on a more simple 1KRR from 04. Don't miss the electronics at all.
It looks good just as a design... That being said I would never buy this thing, and then what's the point. Personally I never like things that intend to be something it is not, and this is exactly that. I've had fun on a scooter on twisty roads as well, so of course horsepower isn't everything. I would still choose the scooter over this bike though, because the scooter isn't trying to be anything other than a scooter.
It's a fantastic bike. The name is just a bit lazy. Oldies who remember the R7, know it was a built-to-win-races (it didn't) model. Youngins' who weren't around wont make any association. Yammie could have given it it's own name. In saying that, I'm grateful it's not called the i7. Cheers to Chris and Bike World 👍
I'd like to see Suzuki put a bit of time and development money into the old SV650. Give it a proper 2022 makeover. The stocker A retro The race replica. I'm sure there's life left in the old dog yet...
I'm really happy that there are finally some fresh bikes in the sector I wouldn't want to do trackdays on a bike without TC anymore. Seen enough people launch themselves into orbit on bikes that "don't need tc ". I think for those just doing a few trackdays a year any help is welcome. R9 with the gizmos maybe? Or even better KTM do an RC 890R - that isn't 40k and sold out. :))
I just noticed that, there are a lot less supersports on the street nowadays. I'm guessing it's because as you've said, other types of bikes have come a long way. And just how many people ride on the track yearly? Monthly? Or even, weekly? I pity the guy that has to ride for a long distance daily with a supersport. Still, I just don't the explanation that it's supposed to "fill" in the gap between the r3 and r1. The R6 already fit that category already. The R7 on it's own is alright... but still when compared to the R6? And you really just can't brush off the R6... it's REPLACING the R6. I mean, I think most people's first instinct is, whether to buy the R7, or a 2nd hand R6. I just don't think the R7 has proven itself enough to be warranted to be compared to others, besides the R6.
A couple of questions for all the street Rossis and ego bikers who think this has not enough power or doesn't "deserve" the R7 name, bla bla: Can you set consistent, competitive lap times with any cc bike around any type of track? Can you perfectly execute walking / bicycle speed complex, one handed, etc. maneuvers on any bike? No? Yeah then anything above a bike like Ninja 400, including this one is already too much bike for you and you don't even know it. Since when is being a good rider just twisting the throttle on a straight road? Cut the bullshit about how anything below 100-120 bhp is "too slow" and learn to ride first.
Especially when you look at articles like Bennett’s “How much horsepower do you really need?”. For sports road riding, no one is actually using that extra 40 bhp of the r6 unless they’re way, way beyond any speed limit. The cp2 has more power available than the r6 until the r6 is above 10,000 RPM *at full throttle*, and how often are people riding like that on the road?
As you said. Not everyone will be rossi. Despite how much practice you get on a bike. People buy bikes for excitement. And even if the R6 couldn't be used at 100% on road, it still provided ample excitement, largely due to its engine and racey feel. Also can we stop this bullshit about telling people which bikes they should get? Or even worse, which bikes people WANT to get? Motorcycling is a passion, treat it as such.
2:57...The R7 fits neatly in that gap between an R3 and an R1..? No. It's over 100bhp shy of that gap. I think the R7 is a fantastic bike and on real roads in the real world will be all that most would want or need, but it is not a natural stepping stone from an R3 to an R1. Not even close. Some would argue neither was the R6, such is the gap in performance to the R1. I think the R7 is fab, but lets not over egg the pudding.
I never understood why they scrapped the R7 coz the Gixxer 750 was a perfect road and track bike in my experience. The 74hp though is something I will never get my head around. I had a CBR400 import that put out close to that I think.

I will say what I first said when I heard Yamaha was introducing this bike, Kawasaki just lost their 650 market. Don't get me wrong, the 650 series bikes from Kawi are all fine in their own right but realistically they're boring and characterless machines. The R7 will mop the floor with any 650 out there in terms of engine character and handling ability.
You're wrong. Most bikers did not like supersport bikes due to the riding position. This bike is the worst of both worlds. Uncomfortable and lacks power. It's not fun to be on the road, when you're being overtaken by everything else. Ninja 650 is cheaper and more comfy with only a bit less power. Cbr 650r has a much better engine, the same price and more comfy.
@@arnoldtm31 what? being overtaken by everything else on an R7?? holly, what are the speed limits on your country? 299kmph? R7 tops at 230kmph....on my R3 i wont get overtaken by everything on the highway cause not everyone is going 200kmph...trowing crap at the R7 just for the sake of it man...
In fairness, most don't know the categories. This is a Production twin or Supertwin in reality - but it's a "Supersport style" bike I guess. I see supersport and sportbike used kind of interchangeably by a lot of people - understandable. Technically, even an R3 can be a "Superbike" - so it's all a bit "grey".
Still not convinced. That's just not sportbike engine, period. Only ABS, no riding modes. Cost savings all over the place. I'd rather add some cash and get something proper.

Where did you hear about the R9?
NICE BIKE
I remember the original R7 OWO2
Finally finding reviews that aren't whiny American accents. (like 99% of youtube) ! Cheers! Subbed. Is that Fagan's big ass in front? :P
An R9 for 12k with full MT-09SP electronics is the bike we are waiting for.
@@MrRui33333 MT-09 is around 9900 Euros here in my country the MT-09SP is 11500 Euros, so maybe a base R9 for 12000 and a R9 with SP suspension for 13500 in my country, prices for bikes vary in Europe from country to country.
The problem I see with this bike is the power characteristics being arse about face. The low and midrange are what make this motor so good in the MT-07 but in a sportsbike where you are likely to spend more time at higher revs, I think this would become tiring very quickly. I will still test ride one😁.
you would get fucking killed at a track day. then sell it and get something else
@@crimzikk if you expect this bike to go toe to toe with 600-1000 supersposts on a long track with long straights, then you already lost, why to get this bike if what you wanted is 600-1000 racing performance from the beginning? makes no sense to me...usable supersport bike for road an track, that rings the sense bell...
@@brohofied2561 you would get frustrated at track days on this bike. ok rider would be too fast for slow groups. then in a faster group you would get owned by every bike that is there
@@crimzikk then get an R1 or a ZX10R, problem solved, this bike is not for pro track raider riding alongside skilled 1000CC bikes and expect to get lap records, more than than that i dont know what to say man...
@@brohofied2561 it would be a good bike for the street
145bhp turbo kit is already available(well, with pistons, rods and injectors).
keep going man
you're killing it.
...🤙
bye the way i like this aprilia.🤪
Off topic but if yamaha integrated those lights on the front to the r3, they would be perfect
I still wish it had TC. After having it save my bacon on a Super Duke R a R1, and a couple of other bikes when I hit slick spots in the road I could not see, I am a believer. Yeah, I know, I know.... "who needs TC with only 74 horsepower?" Well if you live in a wet and cold area with moss, sand, and crushed rock frequently on the roads, and you like to ride hard... personally I would put it on every bike.
I miss the R6
✨✨✨🙂👍💜💯 YAMAHA R7
Even the rs660 doesn't have enough power to warrant using tc and rider modes. The mt07 at the top end is like jeremy clarkson a lot of noise and you don't really go anywhere.
Underfed but still hits hard ...
What does he mean by ‘the R6 is no longer available on the road in Europe’? The R6 was discontinued right?
The bike was discontinued after 2020. It's sold as a race-only variant now.
Nice review but I'm still sleeping wake me up when they come out with new 1200 ST :)
She does look good, I'll give you that! And it surprised me that Chris singled out the chassis. As for the rest, I'm keeping quiet; look at what happened with the T7!
what happened with the t7?
@@steveman1982 everyone bought it and it sold out everywhere like the R7? 🤔
@@steveman1982 What hellfire said: it sold like hot cakes!
Please Yamaha make an r9 for us more experienced riders to use on track
Sounds like a great idea.
@@BikeWorldTVshow yes it would be perfect to replace my gixer750..I’ve no interest or skill to use an R1 fully on track but I’d love an R9. It would be a perfect blend of handling and power, just like my 750 😁
Yes, it's what many of us hope they make.
Honestly my first thought when watching this.
is this for real? are you reading yourself? you want Yamaha to do an R9 for more experienced riders like you so use on track...man i would laugh if wasn't kinda sad XD , so,you want Yamaha to do the stupidest move an go with an R9 which will cost the same as an R6 probably, why theres no more R6 again? ah yeah, expensive supersport...and, if you are that experienced, get an R1 or ZX6R or a ZX10R, why an R9?...
Think it's a fantastic package for the money they are going to shift an absolute ton of these, Great review.
Would a cbr650r not be it's rival?
Cbr650r is ignored whenever r7 rivalry comes up..donno why..but undoubtedly cbr is more powerful than r7 in the top end
Yamaha R7 or Kawasaki ZX6R(636)???
That’s the question and roughly 50-60hp difference
Nice bike but I still want a ZX6-R next year.
give that man an RS660 so we can know !
When you release the h2R drag race video guys 🤔 😭
Been looking forward to a UK test of this bike (espesh with a pipe & shit). Modern day YPVS (4T) ?. C'mon Honda dig out an VFR600R & how about a Suzi SV800. A KH7 may be a stretch tho.
Really,really curious...
You guys don't remember the old R7 when it meant something.
74 hp is perfect for the road, 200bhp is TOO much! That's coming from someone who has an R1
Ita still not 115 the R6 offered either
Cheers to Chris and Bike World 👍
nice promotional video, but too much sugar coating lol
good beginner bike at best
weird location for a track in the middle of a barren dust bowl, wouldn't be fun on a windy day lol
I'd like to see Suzuki put a bit of time and development money into the old SV650.
Give it a proper 2022 makeover.
The stocker
A retro
The race replica.
I just don't think the R7 has proven itself enough to be warranted to be compared to others, besides the R6.
naooooooooo, ele nao esta no lugar da r6,.. pra o lugar da r6 deve vir a r9, pois tem potencia semelhante de 115 a 125cv
I agree 100% - until your lap time is the track record, technically, you are not able to outride the bike :-)
Yamaha is just doing Shrinkflation by going 2 cylinders for r7.
in MOTOAMERICA head to head aprilia(twin cup moto america superbike)
2:57...The R7 fits neatly in that gap between an R3 and an R1..? No. It's over 100bhp shy of that gap. I think the R7 is a fantastic bike and on real roads in the real world will be all that most would want or need, but it is not a natural stepping stone from an R3 to an R1. Not even close. Some would argue neither was the R6, such is the gap in performance to the R1. I think the R7 is fab, but lets not over egg the pudding.
yes,.. mas cedo vem a r9 , e essa sim, vem ocupar o lugar da antiga r6 !!
R9 instead, but it's probably gonna be expensive
no R6 in Europe? wtf? thats sad. yall missing out. ill have to google the "why"
my sons 3 year old, buying him one of these instead a bycicle.
I never understood why they scrapped the R7 coz the Gixxer 750 was a perfect road and track bike in my experience. The 74hp though is something I will never get my head around. I had a CBR400 import that put out close to that I think.
RS660 is a much better deal. The R7 looks pretty good though, except for the frame.
Yamaha, Make a supercharged version ! With, Ohlins, Brembos , OZ Forged wheels ETC,and load it up with the best rider aids. Do not get rid of this current model, Also offer a Performance kit for current R7 Wheels, tires, suspension, brakes.
i think they made a mistake...with the engine
If only they had just gone with the triple, with the legendary R7 name.
The R7 is going to get left behind by 21 year old Fazer 600's
And my bandit
🇲🇾👍
A more exciting R3 lol
It's for canyon riders, not throttle jockeys.
74HP I' have that on my Vstrom, I stay with GSXR600 or R6😅maybe the new R9 117HP.
I've got an SV650S w/gixer front end, wheels, ZX 14 shock & PC3 and I'm not impressed w/this bike. Dear Yamaha, stop fuckin around and put the 09 motor in an R6 chassis, sell more than you can make cuz that's what EVERYBODY wants.
Looks like a Chinese copy of an R1
STOP CALLING IT A SUPERSPORTS BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Instead, pick up a second hand CBR650F for half the price, 15 more bhp and more torque
...and an extra 25kg
@@bambooshampoo3495 20kg wet actually! Riders vary that much anyway. Where the R7 would be struggling it’s nuts off with anyone over 14 stone, the higher torque of the CBR would brush it aside.
@@paullovesey4863 I think you need to check your torque figures. The cbr does not have more torque than the mt07/r7. A simple search for a torque curve will show you that Yamaha's cp2 engine is superior upto 8k rpm
This bike is a downgrade cash grab. Reviewers just don't want to damage their relationship with Yamaha. Its inferior to it's competitors and and inferior to what it replaced.
Have you ridden it?
What did it replace? Please don't say the R6, or the R7, I beg you.
How many world championships did the “mighty” R7 win? Oh yeah…big 🍩
Did yamaha pay you to say it's a supersport? The foremost requirement for a supersport is power, which this one clearly lacks. I have no idea who buys an uncomfortable bike with no power. It's just a beginner big bike. A lot of people are going to get buyer's remorse very soon.
