- Today was the first day the Union Pacific steam crew started with the Union Pacific donation special. The three main attractions on this train were 4-6-6-4 #3985, 2-10-2 #5511, and dd40ax #6936. In addition to this, many other historical pieces of equipment were included in this. This consist's final destination is Silvis, Illinois, where all of the equipment will be restored to operation by the nonprofit Railroading Heritage Of Midwest America. It will take years to restore this equipment, but it is important that it is done properly, so in the end, it will be worth the wait to see these locomotives under their own power. Join us as these locomotives take to the mainline for the last time under Union Pacific's ownership.

Kind of sad to see 3985 in such a state. A big contrast to when she was thundering around that same curve unassisted with a 143-car freight. Hopefully the folks at Silvis get her fixed up and running as she should.
I was thinking about the same thing
@@TrainFan119 Me three.
Me fourth
Me fith I like seeing her in UA-cam videos
I assume she’s in much better shape than most steamers. She just doesn’t have her jacketing on which makes her look all rusty but it actually prevents rust by having it off during storage. Also the tender appears to be 4014’s which was never restored.
I think that is the first time 5511 has been out side in more that 60 years
She hadn’t been out since being a stationary boiler and being used in the Giants of steam documentaries. After that she’s been in the Roundhouse in the heritage section of Union Pacific‘s main yard in Cheyenne for so long and now she’s getting a chance to shine again when she’s ready to go
Actually they did a night photoshoot with it in the 90s pre asbestos abatement
Wow
Farewell 3985 and 6936! Glad to see you're being transported to your new home! Sucks we may never see 3985 or 4014 doublehead or 6936 help 4014 during one of its excursions.
One never knows, UP might allow 3985 on their tracks to pay a "homecoming visit", if they get it restored successfully. A meet-UP (get the pun?) might also be possible. Don't rule out a Challenger-Big Boy doubleheader just yet!
@@thunderbird1921 pah🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s going to be exiting to see a 2-10-2 on the mainline with an excursion train with it
Good luck 6936, 3985 and 5511 to your new home in Silvis, Illinois. 261 and 6988 will be there too!
@Sebastian Floyd yes that too, don’t forget 838, 3977 and 4466.
@Sebastian Floyd yes and CN 1551 along with McCloud 19.
Thanks for the great video. I still can't believe the UP didn't put a clean diesel on the point. They had to realize this would be the most photographed train since 4014 came out. The 5716 looks absolutely terrible pulling this train.
should have fixed up 6936 and put it on point!! It can't be hard to mechanically fix a GP40 times 2.
From what I understand, 6936 was never given PTC, which would therefore prevent it from leading the train. As for 5716, it was probably the best option (if not the only option) available for the UP, since hauling two locomotives would probably require more power than hauling just one.
UP 6936 deserves a mention. Largest diesel electric loco ever built, an DDA40X if a remember. Several were built. Currently 6936 is being refurbished and did a test run as recently as Sept 2023.
Let the spirit of the challenger never die
3985 and 5511 look like they've seen better days.
261 Will Be So Happy with the News.
Wow, so 4014's tender was included with the donation. Interesting to see 4014 use 3985's tender now, too!
its going to be converted to oil then be returned to 4014 and 3985 will get its tender back that 4014 has been using
@@raymondchason2877 I thought it was already an oil burner
@@gigabuster_87 3985 and 4014 are now oil burners. But 4014's tender was not converted in time, so 4014 is now borrowing 3985's tender until 4014's tender is converted by RRHMA to hold oil.
Glad to see that UP engines 3985,5511 and 6936 are moving to a new home in Illinois ; I would really like to see 3985 and 6936 return to operation but maintenance needs to be performed and that takes a while. I am glad that there are plenty of videos of both 3985 and 6936 in operation from decades ago to be enjoyed in the current time period though.
Thanks for sharing the video. Glad to see that they are off to a new home. Maybe they can run again.
Look at all that old stuff waiting to be back on the rails, restored to glory, repaired nicely, and repainted for good measure! 🤩
Super chase and catch. I was planning on catching it in Kimball or Julesburg, but 2 hour drive -- ugh.
Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
Thanks Dave! It was definitely quite a drive to catch it, it was also very cold and windy.
A very interesting video, I hope that the 3985 will be on steam again. This loco was in service until the Bigboy 4014 was deployed, it was the backbone of the UP's steam operation. Very nice and sad video.
Great video bro! Glad we got to meet up again at Archer Hill.
In case it is not clear, upon restoration RHMA left it open for UP to buy their engines back with proper compensation.
interesting......
Very nice video! I'm glad to see the 3985 out on the main even though it is not running. Can't wait until it is restored to operation condition.
Hooray!!
What a sight! Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great coverage.
Thank you!
Great stuff! Absolutely love that shot East of Bushnell
Thank You!
At some point after the UP train cars are refurbished, they will be painted in Milwaukee Road colors.
That was the news from the RRHWA. I'm sure it disappoints some of you.
The business cars are being painted into the colors of the original owners.
What a champ the RRHMA is
I Can't wait to see Angus Paul's reaction to this.
Bro fr hit “Randomize Train”💀
That young valve gear looks dope.
Great catch! Loved seeing this historic move! New Sub here.
Awesome, thank you!
I'm just praying they will fix her whistle so we can hear what a properly maintained Hancock 3 Chime sounds like.
I’m heartbroken seeing the challenger in that consist along with 5511. I hope Union Pacific restores it. 3985 and 844 in my honest opinion were the queens of the rails before 4014 and everyone was drawn to both of them
It would be fabulous to see these big locos in steam again. Some beautifully framed shots too.
I am curious about all the motion still being connected for a dry move. I wonder how they kept the lube up to the valves and cylinders so they did not shit them selves?
the Piss Brick Central is getting rid of so much of the equipment that keeps fans or the public caring about their railway.
The Special Train climbs over Archer Hill.
That what the donation was for. To get her repaired and in running shape. UP has its hands full with 4014 and Dayliner. Made donations to other Railroading Musuems to effect repairs and get them running. They all are repairable but need TLC with UP doesn't have enough of
Could be wrong, but I believe this is the first time since 1958 that 5511 has been on the mainline. It was last seen on the mainline in 1958 or 1959 when filming "Last of the Giants" although it wasn't actually functioning. They burned tires in the firebox and pushed it from behind with a diesel.
Up challenger 3985 returned to mainline
Yeah, I imagine that the UP management didn't want to spend the millions' to rebuild her. Not after they already spent huge money on the Big Boy rebuild. Although, its still good to see that she will be rebuilt, and not allowed to simply rust away.
I wonder if the irm will acquire some of these. Mostly the cnw and maybe the 6936. They could help with the restoration, just a thought ;)
The CNW f unit will go to Boone & Scenic Valley RR in Iowa, while all of the other heritage equipment will be at Silvis, IL. RRHMA will be doing the restoration work for the equipment in Illinois.
There is a good chance some of that equipment had journal bearings on their trucks. Class 1 railroads no longer accept that kind of equipment, so I wonder what kind of paperwork they had to file to get an exception?
as a "special equipment" move, it up the car inspectors on each railroad to decide to accept the equipment on their tracks, and special instructions of how it moves on their track ie, speeds, routes, inspections en route......
Are we just gonna ignore the f unit, that thing is kool
Its neat for sure!
Why was this the "Sneaky Train of Regret" was that the dirtiest engine ever? Couldn't 6936 have pulled it, blasting its horn the whole way?. For that matter why was 6936 way back in the consist doing the "walk of shame"?
same here, a few days in the Cheyanne diesel shop, it could have been a runner.
6936 is NOT operational. The two diesel engines doing the work on this run are also DPU-equipped. While they could have waited, it was a necessary decision to utilize these two to make the trip on time.
@@davidng2336 it ran all the way up until it was parked. Just needs some maintenance stuff done to get it running.
@@mason7024 correct. So it should be the quickest to restore once it gets to its new home. PTC is another issue.
THE DDA40X MIGHT RETURN!
if any return to excursion service 6936 will be first, cause it's the easiest to return to service.
it's better to say when it will return??
@@rearspeaker6364 Yeah in the furture i think 6936 will be the first to become operitaonel then 3985 would be next, 5511 could be last snice she hasn't had any type of repairs or seen excursions. but it could be the other way around with 3985 being last snice she is much bigger and "challeneing".
I’m in love with steam locomotives, but did no one else notice the monster of a diesel behind the 5511?
It’s kind of sad to see 3985 in that state even after being in excursion service
Wouldn't be right without the wind noise
anybody know the schedule like when will it be in Council Bluffs?
Awesome video do you know if this train is going to go to El Paso
Silvis, IL
It will not be passing through El Paso unfortunately @Modern Model Trains .
if it was going to el paso, i'd expect it to be loaded onto a chinese scrap vessel.
@@ColoradoRailroadProductions ok thanks
The CNW 401 will be dropped off in Iowa. The rest go to Illinois. Very excited to see their final results!
What's happening to the 401? Museum display?
Will 401 be donated to the Boone and Scenic Valley?
@@Drockthe3rd that’s what everyone is assuming
@@thunderbird1921 no idea. But I do hope they can pull off a restoration
They should’ve brought in their heritage unit from the southern pacific to pull that special all the way. One heritage unit bringing several others to their new home
I thought I heard that 5511 is in slightly better shape than 3985 that 5511 will be restored first. Please fill me in on the correct info about the condition of both locomotives featured here
UP 3985 will be restored first.
Then UP 5511 will be next.
Imagine if they got the gas turbine running again as well
Up 5511 going to restauration to museum shop
If 3985 does make a comeback, they should put her in front if they pair her up with 4014 or 844
Anyone have a map or link of where it will be traveling to Illinois?
I do not, unfortunately union pacific took down the map that was originally posted, sorry about that.
Y’all talking about 5511 3985 618 you know iconic locomotives
I’ve been waiting for the 4466
Was that an E8 B unit ?
Yep!
God damnit UP why are you donating your 6936
That was one of 4 reasons I own a scale DDA…
Same, UP could've keeped that diesel and use it still. fixing a diesel shouldn't take that long or cost that much.
@@Sonic.Mario.64 only problem is the 4 axle trucks would've destroyed more track
I have never heard of 5511. What is the story behind that locomotive?
It was stored in the Cheyenne roundhouse and has sat dormant since the 50's, now its going to be restored to operation in Illinois.
@@ColoradoRailroadProductions Great to hear! Thank you.
I have multiple questions
#1. I noticed the crew was riding in the 5511 cab and not 3985 how come
#2 Do ya thing 5511 and 3985 will double head together?
#3. Will UP let them run on their tracks again? Or Double head with 4014?
#4 which do you look more forward to see restored, 5511 or 3985?
Sorry for all the questions just my curiosity is getting me
1. 5511 has friction bearings that forces the engine to run at slow speeds. They’re probably just staying there just in case. 3985 doesn’t have those bearings.
2. I anticipate a double header between the two.
3. It depends. Both are being rebuilt to UP specs, but since UP doesn’t allow steam engines not owned by them, I’m not sure how this will play out.
4. I’m looking forward to seeing both!
@@davidng2336 --UP doesn’t allow steam engines not owned by them, they need to change their policies!!! anywhere 4014 can go, any steamer can follow!!
I think there's an agreement in place where UP can re-acquire them after they are restored and cover the costs the museum used to fix them.
@@eva.cassidy thanks
@@davidng2336 I believe you meant to say that 5511 has FRICTION bearings, not roller bearings.
Is UP getting out of the steam program?
No. UP is still running their steam program. It’s just not feasible to have UP operate and maintain 4 big steam locomotives. UP will still operate Big Boy 4014 and FEF 844.
Union pacific donation special
It’s kinda sad how union pacific just pushed 3985 until she broke down
Just liked then (from when this comment was sent) and you only have 1 more like till you get to n&w 475!
Why was West of Hillsdale, WY after Hillsdale and East of Hillsdale scenes...that seems counterintuitive, or the descriptions got turned around. Good video otherwise.
That was a typo, sorry.
Up 3985 está sem apito
Hi Are they Challenger will restore & get back on mainline run with big Boy & 844???
Will Never happen! 👎
Thats not been planed yet, it may happen but is unlikely.
3985 and 5511 will operate excursion trains on regionals and short line railroads in the Midwest.
@@kens.3729it will
@sebastianfloyd9705never
So I take it we’ll never 3985, 5511 or 6936 run anymore 😢
They will, RRHMA is still raising funds for the restorations
They all will operate again. Why wouldn’t they? Lol
I thought 4014 was leading the excursion
It can't. This is a hospital move where it can only run at slow speeds.
Plus, running steam is more expensive than diesel.
@@TranscontinentalRailfan I know that
Well should made 3 Giant locomotive run only Giant is show more interesting run forever is 844 & 3985 & 4014 is more powerful & big loco rest the world & popular than other steam loco & why not
I think I like 4014 better than 3985 because it is bigger and faster (80 MPH). The 3985 on the other hand is smaller and slower (70 MPH). Anyone agree?
No. Challengers were more versatile, and there are stories that they could've gone 90MPH with sufficient maintenance and a brave enough engineer.
@@Jimboliah3985 No. Challengers only go 70 MPH.
There is not really a max speed on a steam locomotive, Really depends on engineer and fireman. That being said there are plenty of videos of challengers going over 70 so that is definitely not the top speed.
in addition the bigboy, has smaller driving wheels because it is a freight locomotive, meaning that it moves slower please do some more research before spreading false information.
Kinda pathetic the way they treated 3985, like a red headed step child. I think she is a nicer locomotive than the 4014 myself but what do I know, I’m just a Pennsylvania Railroad fan. Glad to see someone will give her the love and attention she deserves.
i agree its sucks, but from what i researched, the UP steam team or the program all together, Couldn't handle 3 Steam locos. and the FRA required PTC on the 4014, 3985, and 844. hopefully there will be some type of agreement where they can have 4014 meet 3985 or have UP run 3985 on thier tracks. I also heard after restoretion the RRHMA could give the locos back and UP will cover the costs. untill then i'm glad these locos will finally see serivce once again.
