Union Pacific Donation Special Departs Cheyenne, WY

- History was made on Friday, November 11th 2022, as the UP Steam Crew pulled a small assortment of historic equipment out of Cheyenne, WY. This assortment of historic locomotives and cars had been donated by Union Pacific to such preservation groups as the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America, and the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Much of this equipment (including the world-renowned "Challenger" #3985, and 2-10-2 #5511) had called the city of Cheyenne 'home' for a time spanning greater than 65 years. Alas, we viewed as this beautiful assortment of railroad history was towed out of town for what may be the very last time...
In this video, watch from the US Highway 85 bridge above the Cheyenne Yard as the UP Steam Crew prepares the heritage equipment for the move West. Along with the 2 big steam engines are UP DDA40X 6936, a UP CA10 caboose, an ex UP/Amtrak E9B, and Ex-CNW F7A #401. As soon as the equipment is ready, UP 5716 helps the equipment out of Cheyenne with the assistance of UP 8198 and UP Steam fireman Ted Schulte at the throttle. The Wyoming wind was relentless, the cold November air was bone-chilling, and the UP's famed "Overland Route" was buzzing with activity. Come take a look! Rate, Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! Found this information running around -
"3985 AND 5511 are to be taken to Silvis Illinois and the Railroading Heritage of the Midwest shops and both locomotives are to be totally restored and returned to operating condition. Also, DD40X diesel #6936, four UP passenger cars, a UP dining car, a UP Baggage car, a UP caboose, two WP business cars, and the UP business car known as the Stanford, originally the Southern Pacific Sunset. Private donations are to be used to totally restore this treasure trove of equipment and use it in excursion service."
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY and I'm sure that every steam locomotive fan will be rejoicing too!
In the 90s we watched 3985 and the E-9 diesel streamliners pulling a special passenger excursion run to Southern California. The train manager was Steve Habeck, a fellow operator at the Diablo Canyon nuclear powerplant. We saw Steve when the train stopped at Kelso CA and he was grinning like a kid at Christmas!!!
Sounds like good times. Being a steam locomotive engineer was my dream job as a child. I remember in 5th grade my classmates standing up and telling the class what their fathers did for a living. Many engineers in the group, I remember thinking” there must be a lot of trains”.. lol. I must’ve been born under a rock man. 😅
I live in Omaha and my son and I love watching trains come in and out of town. The Heritage Yard in Council Bluffs is a special spot but it's not open to the public. Last Winter we saw the CNW F3 that was part of this consist sitting in the Heritage Yard which was neat to see! We just saw Big Boy 4014 for the Home Run Express this year. Love those old UP engines!!
Very classy of Union Pacific to first preserve these mechanical marvels and to secondly , donate them to historical societies. Well played UP....well played.
Donating old steamers and diesel locomotives to RHMA. There they can restore the steamers and diesel locomotives back to operating condition. They arrived 5 days later. Now these old things are being restored.
One of my fond memories is watching "CHOO CHOO TRAINS" when I was a tot. That was long ago...
I recently heard that Challenger is going to be headed to the shop, there was a change of heart with UP that is in fact restorable . I knew an engineer who engineer on those locomotives. He said it was his favorite it could pull an unbelievable amount even surpassed original rating
In 1990 we watched 3985 pull a double stack up archer hill by itself. In 2022 we watched it get pulled up the hill as dead weight.
I don't know why there are so many negative comments about this train. What are the odds these locomotives would still be intact in 2023? What would you expect them to look like? They took 4449 out of a park, and look where it went. This is a very hopeful looking train to me.
Обожаю смотреть, как работают старые паровозы😊❤❤❤❤
Some more legends on they way to be restored
Thank for the effort of recording, and documenting this event ! Hope we'll see the equipment in full glory once again some day !
Amazing power double stack cars!, wonderful to see them.
If it still has wheels and is on tracks, save it!!!! We've lost too much to the cutting torch already. Glad to see this mechanical history will have a home. Hopefully restoring goes smooth.
These...will live on, for generations to come!
This is what I love seeing about America. The trains, how they are used etc.Beautiful scenery too.
I finally have a chance to see these two big steam locomotives in action when fully restored!
Think of how wildly different the landscape of RRing would look had the Santa Fe-Southern Pacific merger not been undermined by UP.....
Breaks my heart!!
Just operating those old steam engines under tow would be an experience of a lifetime
We can only dream that the Southern Pacific had a stash of historical stuff like this.
Thanks for sharing this interesting video!
History going down the tracks...
They should've restored 3985 so it could run excursion trips like 4014!
Excellent video, Nick! Wow.
Great stuff, Nick!
This is a awesome sight to see. I dont think we have any steam locos as big as those two in this video. I hope they will be restored to running condition like the big boy?
Yes! RHMA Is currently restoring #3985 and #5511 as well as bringing Diesel #6936 back to operational condition
Challenger
I love the sound of the horns on these locos
Thanks for this…. SO MUCH of what I love in one video 😊 awesome 😎
6:09 this view is probably what any railway looked like after the cutting was dug bad the track, laid. In the U.K. at his would all have grown over with trees and vegetation but looks like this is a very arid environment ….. amazing video and such power of your incredible locomotives.
Big Jack 6936 was still operational a few yrs ago. They used it on a revenue train and also had it on display at the CWS
They can bring all of those locomotives to my house free of charge if they need to, I have a lot of room
Great video for rail fans and I m a rail fan
It amazes me that it wasn’t just all the locos up front, they were spread between cars
Bridge weight limits along the route.
Love the older Steam Engines.
So, good to see them moving and that in hopes of seeing them in the future. The steam engines would be great to see moving under steam. The E9 and others too would be fun excursions for sightseeing maybe in the near future. Awesome.
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954!
Engineers still wave just like they did in 1954😅
Lot of steel on those old engines compared today’s engines.😊
best catch of the year
I hope they put the f unit back in CNW colors
I think it's cool that there's such an interest in these lovely powerful machines. I know the new stuff is technically way ahead; faster and more powerful, probably, but Steam locomotives are IMPRESSIVE in a way that diesels (for example) are not.
I think UP should've opened its own museum instead of donating history away. Besides the steam beauties, I see the 6936 monster. It's the only one left of its kind.
The only operable one, several others around.
The Railroading Heritage of Midwest America actually has a plan to restore UP 3985, 5511, and the other rolling stock to operation and run them for excursion trips for the public. Better to see them operate, instead of sitting in a museum.
I didn't realize that a DDA40X was so much taller than other locomotives
Poor Big Boy 4014 should not be puffing alone, because Union Pacific is restoring his brothers 5511 and 3985 to the service
3985 has been running for decades - they getting rid of it.
@@natehill8069no they aren’t
Their not restoring them. Another outfit is.
This is very sad to 3985 like this condition. At least 611 is in running shape like 4501and 630.
I hate that they’re getting rid of 6936!
I know. At least the new owner wants to get it up and running again.
3985 is my favorite UP engine. I was so hoping they would do a rebuild on her ala 4014 and 844. It’s a sad day…
@@FirefighterSEIN at least the RRHMA will undo the damage that was done.
@@FirefighterSEIN 3985 and 844 are my favorites too. So sad the the UP let them get in such a state of disrepair and focus so much time and energy on the 4014. I do really prefer the 3985. I wish there were still some GN r2's around as they were considerably more powerful than the Big Boy.
@@3RTracing I promise you: 844 will run with UP again. They want 4014 to tour the entire system first. As for 3985, once it is restored, it will look brand new again.
Poor 3985. 4014 showed up and everyone forgot she was there!
I still would rather watch the challenger than the big boy any day
@@bobmoyer8569 tbh I prefer 4014, but I feel disloyal about it
She did not get left out just a FRA mandated inspection commonly known as a 1472 day inspection
Behind the 3985 it's the original tender from the big boy 4014.
They sayed they would restore this tender, but looks like they wont
Actually they did restore 4014’s tender and gave 3985’s back to the latter
Glad to know that there are plans to put 6936 into operation with RHMA.
Is there any kind of update on the two E units?. Butiful. Collection.
please do continue to keep us updated on UP & BNSF and their affiliates.
The profits UP has made in past and future they should have restored these engines
Time, workers and money to cover it all.....better to spend the allocations on keeping the current stable up and running.....sort of like tech companies who have 16 engineering programs going (to make venture-vultures think all is going well) when best practices call for only 6.. seen it too many times in my 48 years in the industry....those that overstepped went BK or were absorbed by octopi like CISCO. Andale!
UP is a public corporation and if there is one thing Wall Street is, is it isn't sentimental. It is amazing that the UP even has a steam program to be honest or they restored the big boy. The challenger and the decapod are big efforts, let's hope the recipients can make them run again.
UP used challengers oil tender w big boy bc converting the BBs tender, which is coal, would have taken too long& cost too much to make the 150 anniversary of the Transcontinental railway. The recipient therefore is receiving the BB tender and will convert it to oil.
Challenger 3985 was my favorite steam loco way before even considering restoring a big boy. Im glad they restored the 4014, but this makes me sick to my stomach.
If it looked as rough as it did in the video, I'm hoping it's going somewhere that it'll be properly preserved.
@@buck45osu Both #3985 and #5511 have been sent to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America's workshop in Silvis, Illinois, and are currently undergoing overhaul back to working order. The group plans to turn the shop, yard, and surrounding 11 miles of track into a heritage line.
She's going to run again, if all goes well. The group they're donating her to in Silvis, Illinois is a heritage organization who wants to run her and 2-10-2 UP 5511 on excursion runs through the Midwest and heartland. They're actually restoring both engines to operation simultaneously, though it's possible 5511 runs first because of its simpler design and reportedly better condition in several aspects (at least from what UP's steam crew has said). We may soon have as many as FOUR of Union Pacific's giants operational at the same time (Big Boy, Challenger, FEF and a TTT)!
Several years ago watched 3985 bring the circus train into Denver.
Keep us updated Nick
They have to be careful , so you don’t mess nothing up, these engines are 70 years + !
I noticed the Young valve gear on locomotive 5511.
Only locomotive in the world with it, if i remember right
Sehr schön !!!
It's so sad to see that 3985 won't run the rails again. I've seen her many times over the years.
...she's been under restoration to working order since January.
@benh3518 that's great news!
Very reassuring to hear all the comments about these historical pieces of railroad history being restored! Would be a shame to loose them. Hope some idiot doesn't try to convert them to run on batteries.
Do you know what this will cost the Midwest society ? 3985 is estimated 5,5 million USD and the 2-10- 2 app. 7,9 Mio. You will never see them running again.
@@steffenrosmus9177 Pessimist
@@steffenrosmus9177 Ok norville
@@steffenrosmus9177 .... tell that to Union Pacific's 'Big Boy'.
It's a disgrace the UP let the 3985 fall into such a sorry state after all the work they'd done to restore her years ago - this is a very sad sight indeed. I really don't know how any tourist railroad or railroad museum will be able to afford operating these two giants, let alone rebuilding them - it's the same issue that has sidelined the N&W's famed 611 "J" locomotive and their 1218 articulated - they're just too big and expensive to operate unless you're a giant comany that can absorb the expense.
they acquired the Big boy - so in terms of maintenance and upkeep it would be 2X the amount to keeps spending - seems the challenger did last for a bit - big boy is then new hype now - doubt any place will be able to upkeep if if run the challenger ... sad
You severely underestimate the funding that RRHMA has.

thanks for this! your videos help restore my faith. now if the govt will stay out of the way, things can continue to get better.
Way to go UP!!!!!!!!!!
Me gusto mucho el video
My goodness some serious motive power here
bruh my favorite railroad is cnw and there is a F7A beautiful hope they have a good time later 😢
I''m glad that I shot great video of 3985 before the restored 844 came back. One video shows 3985 double headed with the 844.
Can you show us the vídeos???
That train should have been lead by up4014 4884
🎉Monstrous train locomotive caboose transaction to dhow
Pretty sure that's the only remaining B unit E9.
Woulda been better if big boy made the delivery.
Looks like there will be energy use conversion
I still think the UP should have kept the 3985
Just read that the FRA tore the UP a new in the North Platte yard on defects on 70% of the Locomotives and 19% of the rolling stock, it got so bad the managers told the FRA inspectors to leave. Try that in aviation industry. The FRA inspectors also wrote in their report of all the rolling and Locomotive mechanics let go that contributes for the maintenance backlogs. The UP is a corporation run by suits that only care about profit, shareholder value and stock buy backs so the suits will get huge bonuses. So, it is inevitable that the board will shut down the historical department before any major work is required on 4014 and 844.

Yes it's called a Texas
@@tonyclough9844 Sorry to be "that guy," Tony, but a Texas is a 2-10-4. A 2-10-2 is called a "Santa Fe."

Looks too much like a funeral.
Well thankfully, it's not
it is, UP got rid of it and the preservation societies do not have the money to keep 3985 running. Not to mention the other engines and cars. UP has decided to close down the historic department at Cheyenne till 2028. Wait and see.
@@steffenrosmus9177 Then how come they're currently rebuilding said rolling stock in Illinois, AS WE SPEAK?
@@steffenrosmus9177RRHMA has been repairing all of them. Challenger’s safety valves have been sent out to be replaced as of July. So I don’t know what tf you’re talking about, but you’re wrong.
Real Trains!!
Hello Nick. I guess that these historic locomotives will probably end up as static pieces only . The cost of making these operational must be prohibitive . It did look VERY cold Nick . Thankyou
the plan is to get both steamers running again. UP didn't have the budget or operational strength to run the 4014 and the 3985 and DD A40X. That is why the opted to donate so much of the heritage rolling stock, so it would be restored and running again. Pretty disappointing and disgusting to see the 3958 in such a state of disrepair and 0 maintenance.
They could have at least washed the dirty beat up diesels delivering the steamers. Seems kinda disrespectful to me but I'm no professional.
@@brentcousins1471 if it was the only option available, they have no choice but to take them.
Its the best.
nice
Was 6936 under its own power? It had been operating not terribly long ago. Sounded like it might have been when it passed by, hard to tell though.
you can already tell its not even on its own power
Although it will be good to see the Challenger looked after and especially good to see that 5511 steam again.. Why exactly did UP take this decision in the first place?
UP is focusing on the 844 and Big Boy. They said the didn't need to support two articulated steamers.
It also had to do with the fact that 3985's firebox was in poor condition. Many patches over the years. It would have cost another million+ and possibly a new firebox and throat sheet. Million 5+ easy. As for the 2-10-2 I think it's pistons are missing and it was a stationary boiler but I could be mistaken. In the first runby you can hear '85 chugging!

What will happen with 3985???
5511 and 3985 will be restored with 4014s Tender
Just as an observation, nothing critical, I wonder why the wheel driving hardware on the steamers wasn't deactivated/removed to reduce the work demand on the operating diesel(s).
It looks like they removed the piston rods and maybe the rods between the valve gear and valves so the exterior rods aren't cycling the pistons and valves inside the cylinders. I suppose pulling the big heavy main rods was too much work to do on something they were giving away, and perhaps the receivers are not interested in having to rebuild it on the receiving end. Easier to just leave it assembled so it's faster to get it on static display if you aren't ever planning on running it again.
Great question though. Made me think it through.
Aha...it would make sense that the pistons are disonnected. And, I see your point about removal of the reciprocating stuff.
@@wskinnon top of that that’s how they moved the 4014 from Pomona to Cheyenne, at least the fireman’s side of the engine.
My observation, The wheels are balanced to the weight of the main connecting rods. Ever notice the solid part of the wheel as opposed to the spoke part and where that is in relation to the connecting rods? If the rods were not there it would be out of balance and I think they would be limited to a much lower speed for transit to their new location.
i hope thare going to fix up 5511 and 3985
They are, they’re going to Iowa to be fully restored to operation along with everything else in this train
They are, so much money in excursion trains 3985 was just beaten up an in dire need of restoration
Is that 4014's tender behind the challenger?
Yes. In one of the shots you can clearly see 4014 on the back of the tender.
Yes. Since 4014 was converted to burn oil and 3985 was retired, they just swapped tenders.
Why does 5511 have all her lights but 3985 doesn’t?
My guess is that when they initially wanted to overhaul 3985, the light and number boards were taken off. I’m sure they are stored somewhere within the train.
Is that a B unit behind the F7A?
An EB-unit
I know less than nothing about steam locomotives. But why wouldn't they disconnect the drive bars from the cylinders and drive wheels while transporting these locomotives?
The piston and valve rods are disconnected, the remaining valve gear will be driving the mechanical lubricators.
@@ieuandavies4134 And the Rods keep the Drivers Ballanced.
Correct
are they going to rebuild 3985? What about 5511?
Yes! RHMA is currently rebuilding #3985 and #5511. They are also working on the DDA40X diesel #6936 to bring it back to operational condition
Many thanks for capturing this Railroad action. Rare equipment, and part of American history!
#3985's tender appears to belong to #4014. Is this correct?
They have the same tender type
Yes actually. #4014 old tender was given to #3985 and the #3985 tender was given to #4014. The reason is because #3985 tender was converted to oil burning which is much cleaner for the environment than coal burning. Since #3985 was being retired due to boiler issues and #4014 was reentering active service and taking #3985 place in the UP heritage fleet, the cheap and logical option was to swap their tenders to save on costs.
RRHMA is going to restore 4014 tender to oil so 3985 will get her tender back
@@UPRailRoad-xg8cb it lowkey sucks that they canned the challenger, yes i know the bigboys the one that gets all the fame cause its bigger but the challengers are just equally cool bits of kit imo
What's happening are they being sent to scrap or being restored?
..... read the description.
They're being sent to a preservation society. Everything is being restored
THE HECK HAPPEND TO 3895?!
Looks like it had its boiler sheeting removed, probably for servicing or whatever. Plus that’s 4014’s old tender, the Big Boy is currently running the 3985’s tender because it was already converted to oil.
Ed Dickens happened to 3895, destroyed the boiler with scale because he refused to listen to anyone.
