  • If you are a lure maker, you have probably found that you have to be a tool and equipment maker too. Hand-making lures and custom painting lures means using specialty items that, mostly, are not available for purchase. That means you become designer and builder of custom tools to make your lures look perfect. In this video we continue with lure foil techniques, specifically, applying creative textures to the foil and combining textures to get a more natural look. We explore different sources for custom textures and make specialty tools to apply them.

    Has anyone out there found some other tool or kitchen implement or random object that they have used to get a cool looking texture on the lure foil?

      How about the holes drilled on the front of a portable radio, the tempered glass of a shower door, the soles of footwear, a unique pattern that you carve into that fancy rolling thing-a-kabob. My wife’s wooden spoon that has indents matching my knuckles. Put your hardwood roller inside a makeshift tumbler to create a one of a kind pattern. Push your roller over coarse sandpaper. Multiple passes over a recurring pattern creates a random pattern. Let Excel create a pattern from the random sample generator seeded by the time stamp, and using various number of input signals. It’s Captain Chaos!

    Hi,i just subscribed to your channel,i am a little like you,randomly making lures,i will send pics to you of my recent crankbait 5" lures in gmail.Well we are all never to old to learn and i learned a lot of techniques from your channel from some videos.Haven't seen them all yet.I just came across your channel about 2 weeks ago.It's 2/5/22 now.I make my crankbaits using only basic tools for cutting and shaping and a lot of steps are simple.I make my 1 piece wire for the hooks with just a small vice and pliers.I spray my lures straight from the paint can.Haha,very primitive eh?I draw the lures back with a paint marker and use Araldite 2 part epoxy with a paint brush for the coating.And thats it.Ready to use.My fishing friends and i have caught many fishes with my lures.Mackerel,Barramundi,Barracudas,Groupers,Snappers etc. And also the fierce snakehead found in abundance in our rivers,lakes and dam and other local fish eating freshwater species.I have a request,can you show your subscribers how to make a tool for bending various wires for lures?Btw,i am also into making knifes,will show you pics too.
    By profession,i am a guitar educator and i just love the great outdoors like you.

    I'm very new to painting lures so please excuse my ignorance. Could I polish the foil with a metal polish paste before I texture it? Your ideas have my brain working overtime trying to think of more possibilities lol.
    All these textures no wonder your lures look amazing, some fantastic ideas I can't wait to have a go.

      Yes, I often polish the foil with a bit of car polish and a soft cloth. The only drawback is that the paint is subject to chipping since it doesn't adhere well to the polished surface. But it looks really cool!

      @@EngineeredAngler Thank you for replying I really appreciate it. I never thought about the paint not adhering to the now shiny surface! But I bet it would look great. Thanks again and have a great week👍😷👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  • @ericstanley8003
    @ericstanley8003 4 роки тому +1

    Are you able to paint these getting the black in the "grooves" like you did with cut foil scales or are they too shallow for that? If not, can you think of way to do it for more depth effect?

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 роки тому

      Sure, in fact I included a macro photo of the foil with some black paint in the texture, in the video.

    Hi Franco I need your help. I made 2 almost Identical crank baits put of wood with I bib both I added an 8th ounce wieght close to the lip they both leaned to the left. So I trued up the lip on both. They still lean and want to roll. I now added a little bit more weight near the lip. Hoping it will bring the head down more. My question to you is if what it did don't make it swim upright still should I replace the lips on both

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  Рік тому +1

      You should try to tune it with the tie on eye. If that doesn't work then the bibs are not in square.

    Add a magnet to the bottom of your tools and attach a strip of steel under a shelf then you can see each of them so a 'll you have to do is grab the one you want use it put it back and grab the next one without having to fumble through a draw full of them and the soft jones like the netting won't get damaged.

    Polish your foil first then stamp the pattern that way when the foil is applied to the lure its crazy polished as im sure you know by know if you stamp the foil then polish the foil you will lose all the stamping features.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 роки тому

      Sure...I think polishing the foil gives a nice finish but it tends to leave a very slick surface that the paint and clear coat has a hard time adhering to. I have had lures where the paint and clear has pealed off after one good fish.
