Easily the best ,comprehensive guide to casting I've seen, made a copy of new lure last night, first time ,very nervous,,,,on open8ng the mold I was absolutely gobsmacked,,,absolutely perfect, the finish ,the float, the wire eyes and lead placement all of it ,well done and thank you, this was a game changer for me ,,,,happy days❤
This and the molding video are incredibly helpful. I know there are a ton of them on YT, but it's always helpful to see how individual people do things. Thanks for sharing!!
Glad it was helpful! I am a big advocate for experimenting with new materials and methods. What works best for me might not work best for someone else, but I think this is a great foundation to start with. Thanks for watching!
I wish you and your family a peaceful christmas and a wonderful New Year with many happy hours on the water. Thank you for sharing all the good stuff with us with your vids.
Great work as always! For the quantity of resin I think u need to go for cubic centimeters instead of grams due to the different specific weights. With your calculations, a resin that is 1.15 g/cc one component and 1 g/cc the other, u will have 32 cc of resin, but the 4 grams of microballoons have an approximate volume of 28 cc(.15 g/cc). You find yourself with 60cc of material for a lure that is 32cc, with 28cc of waste. Just my 2 cents😁 Merry christmas and a happy New Year !😄
i tried the system three microspheres after watching your channel, coming from fasco. the system three with the same 10% weight as fasco is significantly less buoyant. given that they sell it by weight, makes the price different pretty substantial. havent spent enough time to figure out what kind of weight i need to achieve the same as 10% fasco. any advice?
I have been wanting to try microspheres from SacPig. I've heard good things, but wanted to get through my stock of System 3 first. Some people really like Alumilite, others don't. I suggest that you try different things until you find the one you like the most.
You do not have to let the water overflow, just place the bowl with the water on the scale, zero it, place the lure in the water and submerge it, read the scale. What ever weight is now on the scale is the weight of the lure if neutral boyancy.
You are absolutely right. I like to make sure to have a little more resin just to be on the safe side. If you run out, you've just wasted all of it, but having more ensures that won't happen. Thanks for watching!
Hi there, watched your video again,im really intrested in what and how you prime your lures for acrylic airbrush paint,,ive got a couple that after i finished them using a car primer filler that have grown small bumps about a week after i uv resined them,do y9u think it was the car spray reacting as this is the first time ive used it,however im new to resin casting and i usually just spray with vallejo white primer, problem is i dudnt expect any reactions so i didnt record which was which,,,,😮😂,problem is im selling them and am expecting a recall,,,,😅ve been selling wood lures for ages and moved to resin for obvious denand supply and conformity ,any tips or insight would be grarefully received ,,,cheers bud, love your channel, massive praise from the UK
Hello! Sorry to hear you are having this issue. I haven't personally had this happen to me, but I do have a few ideas for you (in order of my opinion of likelihood). 1) the resin may not have been fully degreased before you primed it. This could result in poor adhesion. 2) the resin might not have been completely cured when you primed it. Differences in climate can affect curing time. If the resin was still off gassing it could result in bubbles. 3) the primer might not have been fully dried when you started painting with acrylic. 4) primer incompatible with acrylic. Resin is a good material and it really increases production of detailed lures once you find the right recipe. Best of luck to you, I hope this helps.
Hello. I am writing to you from Turkey. I love watching your videos and started making models for myself. I can't find the microbaloon substance here. Is this substance fiber powder?
Hello! Thank you for watching. The microbaloons are a powder, not fibers. They are tiny glass spheres. Unfortunately the only alternative I know of is to create two halves of your lure with air chambers, like an off the shelf plastic lure.
Yes, you can bake some kinds of resin to achieve harder resin. I checked on the Smooth-On 325 and it says you can post-cure at 150 degrees for 4-6 hours. I reccomend checking with the manufacturer for any guidelines on baking.
I think breathing in any kind of dust or particles is bad. I've been investing in more and more filtration equipment like masks/respirators, air filters and taking time to vaccum the shop. I realize how easy it is to get complacent and we've all been guilty of not using ppe, but I do believe it is really important to take care of yourself.
Thx again for the great video! I took a shot at my first cast today and worked great but the lure is not as floaty as I wanted - did you experiment on how far past the 10% can we go to get maximum floatation without compromising strength? Thx!!!!
It's great to hear your first mold came out perfect! I have gone higher on the microspheres. The bigger the lure, the harder it is to get it poured in the mold fast enough. Your environmental conditions also play a role in how quickly the resin sets up. You'll have to experiment with your particular lure in your particular conditions to see how far you can push the ratio. Keep track of your recipe because once you perfect it you don't want to forget it!
I don't always get bubbles, but when I do, it depends on their size. If it's one or two big bubbles, I fill them with superglue and instacure. If it's a lot of tiny bubbles, you can smear it with bondo and sand it smooth.
Thats awesome, just started painting my own lure blanks that I buy off of Amazon or where ever. I might try to give it a shot, Do you make your own molds also?
To be honest, I don't really know of anyone who saves money making their own lures. Equipment cost, and material waste from trial and error are fairly high. Unfortunately I don't have any numbers to share because I don't currently sell lures and don't track embodied cost. However, I can say the extra cost is worth it to me because I enjoy making them.
Alucinante yo los hago de madera y me gustaría sacar copias de mis trabajos me podrías decir dónde podría comprar los materiales q estas utilizando y q envíen a españa gracias un saludo
6:29 There is an easier method for this as well. Place the pint directly on the scale, don't overfill it like you did here. Then press the lure completely in the water, but make sure, it doesn't touch the bottom or walls. Then just check the weight on the scale. That's the amount of water your lure volume replaces. This works as long as you don't let the lure sink to the bottom. When it does, you'll notice that you're no longer weighing the replaced volume, but the weight of the lure itself. 1grams of water = 1 ml -> 1 cubic centimeter (cube of 1cm*1cm*1cm). Also. Weight of resin is not the same as weight of water. Especially when you mix in the VERY LIGHT microspheres. You did it by weight, not by volume. Hence the excess amount of resin+spheres.. You're mixing up the volume and weight totally in this video.. Great guide otherwise. Thank you :)
Thank you, that is a really great method! I agree, my method is meant to get me in the ballpark, but I will definately give this a try next time. Thanks for sharing!
I have seen people actually using rice instead of water, due to having a closer density to the resin than water. They fill up the mold with the rice (not minute rice type, but actual real unadulterated rice) and then weight the rice.

Beautiful lure! Great craftsmanship!
Thank you very much!
I just discovered your channel. I enjoy fishing and have never considered lure building. Great video. Thanks. Also, I have subscribed.
Thank you so much for commenting and subscribing! I'm glad you found this interesting!
I’m in Australia, been waiting for this video.
I’m just getting into making lures.
Thank you.
Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy lure making as much as I do. Cheers!
Great job. Again, good looking bait

Great simple explanation of the process. Can’t wait to try it. That’s my winter baitmaking project this year.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Good luck to you on your lure making journey.

Great video!
Hey its easier if you just split the microbaloons between part A and part B. Stir them into each, then combine.
That's a great idea! I'll give it a try the next time I'm pouring resin.
Was just searching for a video on this exact topic. Thanks for sharing in great detail.

Great point! I usually aim high the first time just to make sure I don't run out and then whittle it down. But that is much more accurate for sure!
Great video as usual Zim. Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones sir.

Little question : why jump from volume to grams? As the specific weight of water is not the same as resin you will have more resin than needed.

Question about the silicone. Can you pour hot lead or aluminum without ruining the mold?
I'm not sure if you can pour hot lead onto this particular kind of silicone, but I think Smooth-On makes a silicone for that purpose.
@@zimmtex thanks for the quick response.

Where do you get your molds? Or do you make them yourself?
I make them myself.
Have you ever made any clear epoxy lures with glitter or glow powder?
I've made clear lures and I've put glitter in epoxy, but I haven't put the two together. May have to try it out sometime.

Are these microballoons a potential issue for the lungs after mixing and setting in resin, i.e. during sanding of the end product?

I don't always get bubbles, but when I do, it depends on their size. If it's one or two big bubbles, I fill them with superglue and instacure. If it's a lot of tiny bubbles, you can smear it with bondo and sand it smooth.
The funnel seems kinda big. Does it need to be this big? Ive made plastic injection molds , never this kinda mold making
I like to have a bigger funnel because this resin sets up really fast and I need to get it in the mold quickly. Thanks for watching!
what sized eyelets are where did you get them¿or what size would you recommend for making trout lures
I don't use screw eyes; I make twist wire hardware. I usually embed them at least 1/2 inch but prefer 1 inch if possible.
