Not many people realize that Glen Campbell was one of the most in demand session guitarists for nearly 15 years because of his flawless technique and ability to play a part EXACTLY the same way take after take. Look into the list of groups and albums he was with in studios in the US and UK. Roy Clark was a virtuoso with damn few equals and was the poster child for "underrated". Both of them were among the 10 best guitarists who ever lived. They both transcended genres and played Spanish, classical, country, rock, folk, bluegrass and in the case of Clark, even flamenco.

Roy’s Malagueña is incredible.
Glen was part of 'The Wrecking Crew' THE most in demand studio musicians in L.A all through the 60's and early 70's.
When Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Altzheimers and later on, he could play the guitar without remembering how to do it. His doctors said that for Glen, it was like breathing. He didn't think about as it was so natural for him to play that he didn't have to think what note next to do, he just naturally and instinctively knew. RIP to both of them. Ultra talent that we don't see too much today. Love your reaction. :)

Sounds somewhat similar to Tony Bennett who also had Alzheimer’s. I’ve read multiple stories where he would be forgetful, but the minute he walked on stage, he knew all the songs and could sing them perfectly.
That is a common trait of that type of dementia ,remembering the past but not the present
I disagree. There is a steady stream of great musicians in each generation. Billy Strings is great to hear. The institutional support is what has changed.
According to Alice Cooper ,who was Glen’s best bud, Glen could play Battlefield of the Republic and Dixie at the same time. Roy was the fastest picker. Metal and hard rock guitarists from back in the day were well aware of these guys.
I’ve said it before, but again I say..... it’s utterly FANTASTIC to see a younger generation acknowledge his elders like this. TBH, many will miss out, on the absolute SAVAGERY of Glen C and Roy C.

You can round out that group by adding Merle Travis and Jim Stafford. Two other legendary virtuosos! Those six are my Country music guitar heroes from that Era!

I met Glenn Campbell at a golf course in Tucson back in the early 80s. He was just the nicest dude. I was 8 and he treated me like royalty on the 9th green. I will never forget it.
Now what a serendipity moment.
These moments create the best memories of our lives.

The 1st album I bought was Glenn Campbell's Gentle on my Mind.
I was 12 and saved my babysitting money.

I met him durimg his last tour and he was absolutely NOT a "star" or "guitar hero". He was not the Glenn of old, but still quite the Southern Gentleman.
Same with Roy. I caught him outside an elevator in the late 80's. He actually gave me a couple of minutes, and he was more interested in my music than me say8mg "thank you".

Interesting thing about Glen; when he was loosing his fight with dementia, while he began to forget the lyrics of songs, he NEVER forgot his ability to play the guitar.
Medical scientists were studying Glen trying to see if there was some way to link the part of the brain that was in perfect order to "pick up" the part slowed by Alzheimer's. If it was not so sad it would be interesting. Glen did some TV along with his daughter IIRC but it was difficult at times to watch.
What I thought was interesting was that he forgot how to tie his shoes, but could still play the guitar. They are both muscle memory finger work.

That was amazing. I've also heard stories of elderly operatic sopranos who forget longtime friends but can still sing if they hear music.
Earliest memories are always the last to go.
Can't believe we took this music for granted when I was young. There was a lot of great music on TV variety and music shows.
Amen! I've pretty much been saying this since Campbell's diagnosis with Alzheimer's. How did I take this for granted for so long? He and Roy were purely BRILLIANT on guitar!

I'm a child of the 50s, so tuning in to the Grand Ol' Opera and the Loisiana Hayride was a Saturday night ritual.
There's an ambiance, a word I never knew back then, when the fireplace is waltzing the wall shadows and the coal oil lamp in the parlour is just a diffused glow through the doorway. It was what made the magic real.
We didn't get electric till I was nine years old, so the first few years of my life I listened to this on a car radio and speaker, with a 12v AC Delco battery hookup, and speakers with all the "quality" that era implies. Even so, it was a taste of perfection to a scrawny little boy living out in the woods where the whippoorwills sing.
Those were hard times in the rural south, sometimes supper was hardtack and polk salad washed down with cold well water. But when we drifted away to sleep on that glorious music, we were as rich as any king that ever lived.
It would be so nice to go back there for one more Saturday night, before it's time for my own long sleep.

I never appreciated these guys growing up. Now, in my 50s, I am amazed by their skills and talent.

I'm 56 now. When I was young I liked classic rock, R&B, and Classic Country. My rock friends used to tease me when I said these guys were some of the best musicians ever.

Keith Urban says when he met Glen Campbell and asked him his advice about performing Glen told him When you’re on stage don’t make it about you, always make it about the song.

Kevin, I can't tell you how many times I've said "it's about the song, not you unless the song is about something you are going through and think may speak to someone.
We BOTH KNOW there's always someone better, faster, cleaner as far as not needing effects to hide the fact they can't play all; those notes. Crazy thing is I learned that from Ted Nugent. HIs first solo album states "I use a Gibson Byrdland and 7 Fender Twin Reverbs with NO TOYS IN BETWEEN TO MESS UP THE SIGNAL."
If you can't play it clean with no effects, you need to work harder. What will you do the night something meant to enhance a sound isn't working and you rely on it? Listen to Ted explain at the N.A.M.M. show a couple years ago how he wrote all the parts for "Journey to the Center of Your Mind" by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. And don't forget that he played bass guitar for a brief stint for Chuck Berry. Nothing new comes out of music anymore. This is why Guitar Centers are dying and getting into lessons and selling vinyl records. There's way more competition as far as brands go and guitar music in America is dying. Brazil has some incredible players. But Gibson and Fender are dying brands. I am a businessmen lifelong musician. What would I do to especially get the rights to the Gibson or even Fender names! It would be a bigger turn around than Harley Davidson which makes more on apparel than their motorcycles now! My son's best friends dad owns three dealerships. I went to grammar and H.S. with his wife. I know these are accurate statements.
I know I went off track but guitar is my passion and so is songwriting. My friend, you absolutely nailed !

@@georgemoore8832 Apparently he found his "niche'." He created a style that he owns, love him or hate him. I love all kinds of music. He has an open and free sound about him. The older guys were better players, especially in country because today, there is LITERALLY NOTHING TO DO. The mines used to be a huge employer. You have to consider yourself lucky to be bagging groceries at Krogers now. So they play constantly. The way I was able to before I got married and opened a couple stores. The other thing Keith has to contend with is the record label's lack of willingness to try different things and to stick to the same formulas that sell records. Back in the day, before videos, no one cared what you looked like. Now you have to fit the whole suit and as a result, the music gets watered down.
People often forget how great a musician Campbell was, because he was such an incredible vocalist.
I think he was underrated by the public, because he didn't come across as "showing off." Yet, he could outpace the flashiest and most bombastic shredders.
People remember Roy's guitar, fiddle, and banjo, but I also remember him playing the mandolin on Hee Haw, and I loved it. We were a rock and roll and folk music house, but we never missed Hee Haw. We were really blessed with the abundance of musical variety shows on TV in that era.
I'm 53 now so I grew up watching these guys. When you're living in the moment you don't really think anything is going to change. Back then whatever you watched you got to see people at the top of their game. Now you get reallity TV bullshit or an award show where all they do is push a political agenda. Just remember the moment will change. RIP Glen

I'm 61. Dad loved music and one of the first albums he got from Columbia record club was Glen on the twelve string. Atkins actually hung out in my hometown during the summer when he was a producer and I got to have a private session with him. Santana is another guitarist that just shreds it, slowly. I'm watching it next.
Johnny, I'm going to be 55 in April of 2019. I'm from Chicago. I am always so blown away by these folks! Thank God mom and dad in law moved to Chicago for work for 30 years. They tell me I got me a "Hillwilliam!" She only lived in a little "womb" down here. I love everything about Kentucky....except the humidity! LOL!

Makes you love humanity when you see two masters taking joy out of watching each other play, while backing the other player up.
Fil, your observational skills are mind-blowing. 😮 You aptly articulated why most "back in the day" would have taken Glen and Roy's talents for granted. As a child of the 70's, I grew up seeing *plenty* of variety shows of which the phenomenal likes of Roy and Glen were a part of. To your point, we really didn't have the presence of mind to appreciate just how talented these guys were because it was *so* commonplace to see them being sort of a jack of all trades. They'd play with the band, they'd do a comedy skit.. they'd host the show..and you didn't bat an eye or think it was unusual. It was all quite "normal". Now, seeing things from your perspective, I realize just how massively talented these musicians were. They could not only play incredibly (and often multiple instruments), but their talents transcended just music. In fact, both Glen and Roy were also pretty decent actors.
Thank you, as always, for your respect for all of the talent you analyze on your channel and for often giving me (yes, *me* !) an education. 🙂❤️
Mind-blowing?? A lot of simplistic and obvious observations, and some statements that make no sense. Such as that playing a 12 string is "more difficult" because you can get the string caught between the strings... that's just stupid.

You are so right! I've watched several of Fil's responses and he is amzaing. Quick witted and thorough. Sunnibird's comments were unfortunate. And, it might be that Fil mis-spoke and meant to say 'finger caught between the strings." Fil reacts super fast and is fascinating!! Love him.

Fil gets into their head and spirits and talks about much more than their technical skills - he hits hard and fast with a dizzying comprehension and delivers it all with a very quick and sharp wit to analysize it all so fast! Also, even as articulate as he is with lightning speed - it is possible that he mis-spoke and meant to say "fingers caught between the strings." Good Grief! You are missing quite a lot and made insensitive remarks.

I was born in 63. And your are spot on. We grew up, in my opinion, at the height of musical talent, innovation and imagination of all genre's of music. From Glenn and Roy to The WHO to Jim Croche to the Bee Gee's. Just unbelievable stuff we grew up on... and your right, we didn't know what we had.
We took it for granted that everyone on Saturday night tv could perform like that. These two were some of the GOATs! Throw in Chet & SRV and you can shut the door.
Say's a lot when you have to reach back to 1990 for the good stuff.

But he will probably never get the recognition because he was country, not rock. Never mind that he toured with the Beach Boys as one of their guitarists.
Campbell was great but he can’t hold a candle to Roy... Roy is actually holding back some.

Every time I see one of them do something amazing and say He's better, I run across something by the other and say, no HE'S better. back and forth. True masters of their instrument. Country players were the shredders of their day
My generation was very, very lucky. We had top notch performers on TV every night. No auto tune, no gimmicks, just pure raw talent. Did we appreciate it? Not really, we thought it would always be like that. In retrospect I’ve come to appreciate my childhood influences more and more. It’s great to have these videos preserved on UA-cam to go back and marvel.
Sadly Roy and Glen are BOTH gone now. Their music will live forever. RIP guitar heroes!

I love how you can see on their faces how much they love playing and playing together. I grew up watching Hee Haw with these guys and others who didn't get quite the notoriety they deserved outside the country music world.
I love how Roy watches Glens playing on the fretboard almost more than his own playing! Two masters of the frets! Thanks Fil!! I very much appreciate your respect for both these players. So many people say “It’s only country music”.
Even in the hood, we watched "Hee Haw" on Saturday nights.

I think Roy and Glen were part of an incredible generation of performers, perhaps unique to country music that grew up thriving on jamming with other artists. When you went to the opry it wasn't just to perform by yourself, it was to be able to play with all those other amazing musicians. Like Picking and a grinning on Hee Haw. To laugh and play and learn from each other. They all loved collaborating with each other and just jamming. Sadly you don't see a lot of that anymore. Most artist today are not interested in sharing the spotlight. It's all about touring, and choreographed dance numbers, light shows and flying on wires over the crowd. Very few have the talent anymore to mesmerize an audience with just their voice and abilities with an instrument. Love your analyses' Fil! Rock on!
What a performance by two of the greatest guitarists ever. Thank You, it means a lot to all of us old guys that you so respectfully praise these vintage performances. Roy is the reason I fell in love with the guitar, watching Hee Haw... And by the way, I love the smiles on their faces that you paused on at the end. They are looking at each other with such mutual respect. They were very good friends, and they were quite pleased with themselves. LOL

Glen was originally a session guitarist with the 'Wrecking Crew'- he was a natural at playing guitar and didn't need to read. A superb and expressive singer.
He is on the classic "Tequilla" song..

Wow!! In the middle of BINGE WATCHING all of Fil's presentations and the great memories are trully exciting to this 73 year old.
We, for sure, are A LUCKY GENERATION indeed, to have had the pleasure of all the great musicians from the 60's, 70's & 80's.
Only a few perks to being in Old Age with aches & pains and withered good looks but good memories make it all OK.

I am in my early 50's and remember watching these programs growing up. Thanks for giving these guys the recognition they deserve. Like you said they make it look so easy it is deceiving how good they really were. The old bluegrass and country pickers have been underappreciated for years.

I'm a Led Zeppelin type getting into the Country boys and Campbell is a revelation. Caught myself smiling at GC's picking out a harmonic line near the end. Hats off.
Cheers for the Like...Page's equivalent is in fact Jimmy Page they each dominated session playing and no one, but no-one bested them...Page in the equivalent of The Wrecking Crew (JP Jones too) and you only need hear 'Yardbirds 1968' to realise Page could perfectly reproduced Beck's innovative feedback of 10 months before). Little Jim really as THAT good. At 25!

Fil your the man. My grandfather was a session musician and recording artist here in Nashville. He also was the drummer for the Opry for 30 years. Your knowledge of music is AMAZING.

Its nice to see someone your age recognizing Glenn and Roy as the truly amazing guitarists they were. Roy could play anything with strings and Glen was self taught. It doesnt matter who you name, they aren't any better than these 2. You simply can't get better than perfect.

This was a great review, I am happy someone is giving these two gifted gentlemen the kudos they deserve. I grew up watching Hee Haw and didn't realize how talented some of these people were until music went downhill and you compare them to today's artists. I was lucky to grow up when I did and I am happy younger people like you appreciate their music and playing.

Great comparison between metal shredding and "country music shredding". Glen was a master of that pick and finger work. Absolutely ridiculous how accurate he was! Off the chart! So glad you review such a broad range of musical styles and musicians. It really surveys the spectrum. Also, you made a comment in another video about learning just enough to communicate the style you want to convey. Great point. And you're absolutely right...it is NOT one massive competition. The greats always tailored their style to the pieces they played/wrote, and it is not just about being the next best Fender Strat "shredder" or fret/string tapping master. It's about love of the craft and communicating the art and vision of what's in your heart and mind.

I grew up in the sticks, and as a kid would stay at my grandparents house on weekends. My grandpa would say "It's about time for good music". That meant "could you get up and turn the channel to Hee-Haw" because in the 1970s most TVs didn't have remotes back then, especially those owned by retired coal miners.
We'd watch the show, enjoy performances from Roy and Buck Owens, laugh at the corny skits, and just have a great time.
I'd give anything to go back and watch Hee-Haw with my grandparents just one more time.

We had 2 channels, CBS and NBC. We may have had PBS. We were 40 miles from the nearest theater and shopping mall and 15 miles from the nearest town. One had 2 red lights and one had 6 lights after they got the Wal Mart.
An AWESOME display of TALENT.... They BOTH were great in their own styles..... a BLESSING to us all......

I was a kid in the 1970s. We had live music each week on TV from a variety of genres on The Midnight Special and, a lesser degree, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Later, there was Austin City Limits on TV and A&E Live by request.
Now, we're saddled with Dancing with the Irrelevant Celebrities, America's Got (little) Talent, The Cookie Cutter vocalist, and American Pop Mold.
Why I quit watching network TV 15 years ago.

Yes, I was one of those American kids whose Dad and Mom tuned into these shows regularly. At 55 now and looking back on it I realize that I did enjoy them but certainly did not appreciate it for what it was, Masters at work...and play. A huge thanks to you for Fil for not only taking me back in time to be with my family again but helping me and the many others who view your videos to truly appreciate the gift that we were given. This simply is not seen on television today. I am in awe at how concisely you present the technical aspects of the artist's skills, and their instruments. And, thank you for doing so with such reverence. I've only recently discovered your channel...and subscribed, so I'm looking forward to watching, enjoying and learning. Thanks!

I remember this performance. I was totally into Blackmore, Page etc and then I saw these guys who at the time I thought they were just TVstars. Wham! That hit me right in the face. Awesome players and the tune is awesome too!
I love how they make it look like they're having fun while each watches what the other is doing to collaborate in the most entertaining performance possible. Top shelf!
A pickin' and a grinnin'! I was born in 1956, so I was a teen in the early '70s, into Black Sabbath, Mountain, Jimi Hendrix, etc. But I always watched Hee Haw and had a deep appreciation for musicians like Glen and Roy, I looked forward to the Pickin' and Grinnin' part of Hee Haw. Even if I thought their music was generally corn pone, I did love to hear them play. My dad never played an instrument, but he introduced me to talents like Chet Atkins, Herb Alpert, Pete Fountain, Dave Brubeck, and others, and I respected his taste in musicianship. One thing about those old guys, they didn't have distractions like social media, smart phones, computers, or tv growing up. They probably had a family radio, but they were able to have real focus, and spent hours and hours playing by themselves and playing together. Playing together was their social entertainment.
And you're right about the embarrassment of riches, even a show like The Beverly Hillbillies could have theme music by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Nobody does that nowadays, they just get somebody to make generic beats with FL Studio.

Glen actually did pretty good in his last days, maybe not his final days, but he had a strong will that worked better than most.

I hear what you are saying but Roy Clark was given respect, many years in a row. He was voted best guitarist for several years in a row. Glen Campbell was also well respected for his stringed abilities.
Being born in the early 60s when there weren't as many channels on TV as I have fingers on one hand, I remember when these two guys dominated music shows on TV. Even after the advent of cable TV, both were household names and for good reason. They were a couple of the most talented guitarists, ever.
So thankful to have grown up listening to these men and much more. Glenn lived in Phoenix, AZ, where I do and it was always a treat to see him out sometimes.
Glen Campbell also had one of the best vocal instruments in the business. He is missed.
He did an impersonation of John Wayne for me while we were doing a cut up one afternoon in Malibu, not so long ago, and it was as good as his music. He had real control of his vocals.

For those who need to be apprised: Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are Blue grass Icons. The mere fact that they performed at Carnegie Hall is MAGNUM OPUS. Who would have thought the South would have such resounding victory over these Nortern Yankees and bring them to their feet in a momentous and sincere standing ovation? Ok, I am going back to my cabin in the pine, in southern caroline...with a banjo..OMG.
Glen Campbell, best ever. Saw him in concert back in the 90’s. played every instrument on stage including the bagpipes.

These guys were brothers of different mothers and we never saw them play together enough.
It is amazing not just for the music but for watching two virtuosi enjoy playing together so much.
As with your previous observations of Charro, these guys did not get the widespread credit they deserved due to their popularity on television shows such as Hee Haw or variety shows....everyone knew they could play but both guys stature was clouded by the other things they did and pop culture celebrity.
Amazingly in Glens case it might even have been his amazing songwriting, singing and good taste as a complete musician.
Shredding on Wichita Lineman would have destroyed the song. so he didn't.
I love that Roy chose a Tele for this by the way.
As a young shredder your self, I love that you know so well upon whose shoulders you stand.
The ability to see the connections between genera, to appreciate learn from them is really important for any artist.

When I was growing up here in the US, these guys were television personalities. Their musicianship was only barely acknowledged. It’s only been the last few years that I realized their abilities. Especially Glen. He was known as a singer but almost nothing about his guitar skills.

I came here from a Roy Clark, Malaguena, video. I've followed him since the 60s and appreciated his talent and muscianship. That video, alone, speaks of his skill for people who have not been familiar with him. Glen, jeez, he isn't chopped liver either. Again, back in the 6os, us non guitar playing types were fortunate to hear and observe his mastery and muscianship. Man, were we lucky. Thanks for the terrific upload.

Stunning guitar work. What I really appreciate with guys like this is they make it great on at least two levels. Guitar players can be impressed by the technique. The average listener just hears great, entertaining music. A lot of lesser performers do one or the other, but not both.

Thanks for this. As an American, you made me feel good about about two southern performers who I did take for granted. Now I know how good they really were thanks to your breakdown and compliments. Blows me away how a Brit (a foreigner) of your age can see that talent and not dismiss them because they were country artists (I know Campbell played on Beach Boy albums, as well) of an earlier generation. Also, adding in the ability to play that well, sing and host a show is unheard of today. Did not think of that as variety shows like that were common when I was a kid. Again, things I took for granted but now will always respect. Like your stuff. This is not the first vid of yours I have watched. Thanks again.

Roy Clark was so good, he would be a superstar in any music genres.
I grew up with Hee Haw and similar shows in the '70s. These guys and many more were all around entertainers. Stage presence, comedic timing, musicianship, they had it all.

I never realized how good these guys were. I woke up to Glenn a couple of years back, but Roy was just some jolly guy smiling and playing around to me. Never realized how good he was. Amazing what we miss because of the context of the presentation.
I always saw them as equals in the mastery of their art. Clark played multiple instruments as well. They were both excellent players. To see them together. Oh, boy.
I was there in the seventies. I was just a kid but my grandma grew up in the great depression when the family entertained themselves by playing music together and she’d always have the Lawrence welk show on. I didn’t appreciate it at the time but it’s fun to remember those times with her.
