I was 12 when this came out. My mom's friend was moving house so they sent all of us kids to the movies to get us out of their hair. We were so captivated by this movie, we stayed for another showing. My mom was supposed to pick us up outside the theater. When we didn't show she talked the cashier into letting her in to look for us. Her stern face melted - she was engrossed - she went back out to pay for her ticket and we all watched it together. #memories

Grease was originally written by some guys from Chicago, based on their real high school experiences as teenagers in the 1950s. The original was much more raw, dealing with teenage sexuality and other topics in a very honest, no-holds-barred way. The film version transported the action to California, and cleaned up some of the raw-er aspects. (And made the Sandy character Australian because of Olivia, of course.) Obviously, "Greased Lightning" has lyrics like "pussy wagon," and "the girls will cream for greased lightning." And the Rizzo storyline where she has sex and might be pregnant. The original had even more of that sort of thing. If this is the cleaned-up version, imagine how the original was.
A few years ago, I got the opportunity to see a revival encore performance of the very original version, put together by the original authors, here in Chicago. It was quite the experience. The 1950s were not nearly as universally innocent as many people who only know about "I Love Lucy" and "Leave it to Beaver" might think. They had many of the same issues that teenagers have today (but with fewer outlets and understanding role models).

Even better--and people in this generation don't realize it--all the parts of all the older people were played by ACTUAL '50's TV STARS... Eve Arden as the principal (she starred as a TEACHER in OUR MISS BROOKS), Sid Caesar as the Coach (starred in YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS--great sketch comedy), Dodie Goodman as the school secretary (appeared often on Jack Paar's late-night show--the forerunner of THE TONIGHT SHOW), Ed Byrne as Vince Fontaine (starred in 77 SUNSET STRIP), Joan Blondell as the waitress, and so on... LOTS of actual '50's stars in this movie--PART of what made it so GREAT! Also, this was John Travolta's 2nd MONSTER HIT IN A ROW--his movie debut was SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, for which he got his only Oscar nomination, and this followed right after. UNBELIEVABLE twofer for him... no one else has EVER come close to the impact of two monster hits like that, back to back.

She bought one for me and one for her. It was June 18, 1978 and in the fall, she was gone away to school and I cried. This album keep me close to her and kept a smile on my face. National Bandstand is a fictional show everyone recognized as American Bandstand. American Bandstand was the most prominent national show, and there were regional and local versions. The format was simply kids were invited in to dance to top 40 rock. In some forms, they rated the music with typical comments like, "Good beat, and you can dance to it." The long-time host was Dick Clark who rode the success into a brilliant future and became the emcee of the broadcast Time Square New Years Eve broadcast. I think that this movie is more or less timeless. It's set in the 1950s, and there are a lot of allusions to popular culture of that specific era, but the human story it tells has happened before, and will happen again; it happens every day. That's why it holds up so well.
"Sandra Dee"- the song at the sleepover where they're all wearing blonde wigs- Sandra Dee was an actress, popular for young teen roles, such as "Gidget" in 1959. Her image was very ingenue, very innocent and "pure," which is what the girls at the sleepover are mocking. Sandra, like Sandy/Olivia, also had blonde hair, hence the wigs.
"Beauty School Dropout" was sung by Frankie Avalon, who was a real teen heart-throb in the 50s and early 60s. By the filming of this movie in 1978 he was a little older than he had been, but still had it.
American Bandstand was a real TV show, from the 50s to the 80s, featuring pop music and live dancing. Being on the show was very coveted by teens for several decades.
(I was dismayed to see Travolta in a Super Bowl commercial (Feb 2023) trying to reprise this iconic role. Badly. Kinda' sad, really. Oh, well.)

I wish someone would react to Olivia in Xanadu. It wasn't received well when it was released, but next to grease it's my favorite Olivia movie, and has become a cult classic, the entire score for it is done by Olivia and ELO (electric light orchestra). And it has Gene Kelly one of the greatest dancers of all time. It has a great dance scene with him and Olivia, and it was the last dance scene he ever did on film. And it has the song "Magic", which is my favorite Olivia song of all time. It even has a beautiful animated sequence in it done by Don Bluth, a ex Disney animator that went on to do several film including "An American tail", "the secret of Nimh", "the land before time" "all dogs go the heaven" "Anastasia", and he also did the animation for the video games, "Dragon's lair" and "Space Ace". Even though Xanadu didn't do well when released it truly is a magical movie. It a piece of movie magic history that deserves a reaction review.

    1) In the 1950's teen culture it was considered cool to be part of a club or a gang.
    2) The guardian angel singing "Beauty School Dropout" to Frenchie was Frankie Avalon - who was a teen idol pop star in the late '50s and early '60s.
    3) American Bandstand, was an American music-performance and dance television program that aired from 1952 to 1989, and was hosted from 1956 until its final season by Dick Clark. The show featured teenagers dancing to music from Billboard Magazines Top 40; at least one popular musical act (over the decades, running the gamut from Jerry Lee Lewis to Run-D.M.C.) usually appeared in person to lip-sync one of their latest singles. Freddy Cannon holds the record for most appearances, at 110. The show's popularity helped Dick Clark become an American media mogul and inspired similar long-running music programs, such as Soul Train and the British series Top of the Pops.
    4) The lyrics of the closing number, "We Go Together," isn't scatting. In the '50s and early '60s phrases like, "shoo-bop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom" were the background vocals sung by Rock 'n' Roll Doo-Wop groups. Go listen to the song, "Who Put The Bomp In the Bomp" by Barry Mann - once you hear that song you'll understand perfectly.
    5) One of the things in the movie that nobody ever picks up on is when Rizzo and Marty are in the restroom at the drive-in theater, Marty tells Rizzo that she caught Vince Fontaine (from National Bandstand) trying to put aspirin in her Coke at the dance. That line stems from the fact that, in the 1950s, there was a popular notion that if you mixed aspirin with Coke it would make you drunk. So Vince Fontaine was trying to get Marty drunk. Talk about creepy.

You guys seem to really love the 1950s. I'd recommend checking out a classic movie called American Graffiti about high school kids about to graduate. It was director George Lucas' first major hit (released in 1973, about four years before Star Wars). It's actually set in 1962, but it's filled with music from the 1950s and it feels like the 1950s. In reality, 1962 is kind of the last unofficial year of the 1950s. A year later, President Kennedy would be assassinated and couple months after that The Beatles hit America, and the culture and the music changed seemingly overnight into what we think of as the 1960s. An added bonus is that the film is filled with future stars, including Harrison Ford before anyone knew who he was.

Major hit, when it came out in 1978. Travolta had just finished Saturday Night Fever, which was a huge hit, the prior year. He would also do Urban Cowboy in 1980, which of course was a hit, too. All three movies showed off his dancing skills, and all three had hit soundtracks.

It might interest you to know, the Grease theme song was written by the one and only...BARRY GIBB! I was nine years old when my older sister dragged me to see the movie begrudgingly but I ended up loving it and having a childhood crush on Olivia Newton-John. Who didn't fall in love with Sandy? 😊😍

Since the 1970's, there's been this trend in which the entertainment industry would spend the entire new decade paying homage to what was going on in pop culture 20 years prior. Which explains television shows like " Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley," the 1950's cover band Sha-Na-Na and the resurgence of former teen idols from that era who were now in their 30's. Vince Fontaine was played by Edd Byrnes, best known for a 1959 track entitled, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb." Frankie Avalon was cast as Frenchie's Guardian Angel due to his 1959 hit "Venus." Sid Caesar, the actor who played Coach Calhoun, is best known for two live television shows during the 1950s that helped paved the way for future generations of comedians.
It must also be noted that Sha-Na-Na (the cover band I had mentioned earlier) was cast as Johnny Casino & The Gamblers.

During Covid lockdown the movie theater painted the building wall completely white and turned the parking lot into a drive-in theater and showed Grease. It was so cool going there with my wife and the kids piling in the car and screaming our heads off!

As some one who saw this in the move theater when it first came out, Grease has stood the test of time. It was great then and still great now. Shame they just don't seem to make movies like this anymore. Just pure hearted fun! Also if you want to see John Travolta really dance, watch Saturday Night Fever.

Frankie Avalon was a singer and actor in the 60's. "Beauty School Dropout" is the most requested song he gets when he performs now! lol. American Bandstand was on TV for years! Dick Clark was the host!

What continues to amaze me about this movie is just how good it looks. The colors are so beautiful. I was a big time Sha Na Na fan too. They were a band in the 70s that did covers of songs from the 50s. The guy who plays Bowser - John Bowman - is a great follow on Twitter.

Even in the 80's in drill team we did a routine to Greased Lightning, and we had to learn the hand jive as part of the routine! It was so fun, and of course our parentals loved it, too!!! Excellent reaction from both of you. R.I.P. Beautiful Olivia 💔/💖
