    My friend Ray lost his dog and went walking around his neighborhood knocking on doors asking if anyone had seen his dog. To his surprise Patrick Swayze answered the door. When Ray told him why he knocked on his door he said Patrick suddenly turned around and went into his house and came back with shoes on, Then he said to Ray "We can cover more houses if we work opposite sides of the street". So without being asked Patrick was off across street to knock on doors. What a cool guy. RIP

      Can you imagine Patrick Swayze knocking on your door looking for a dog? What an incredible man. His energy was so much like Keanu Reeves' energy today. He's the only other star I can imagine doing something like that. 💕 I suddenly feel like watching Point Break. 🏄‍♂️

    This is a movie about the class system. Upper class vs. lower class. The waiters, the ones who have the most contact with the guests, are from upper class families and they are there to network and get recommendations to get into ivy league universities and medical and law school. The entertainment staff are usually from the lower classes, as "respectable" people thought that show business was vulgar.
    The upper class folks in the big cities in the east, NY, Philly, etc. would take a whole summer, sort of like going to camp, up in the Catskills and Poconos. Since the wives and kids did not work, they would stay at the resort during the week and the husbands, the breadwinners, would work and come up on the weekends. Air conditioning was not common in homes and cities get unbearably hot in the summer. So city dwellers would vacate for the summer.

      This is so true! My girlfriend and I stayed at the "White Elephant" in Martha's Vineyard. The entire staff was clearly made up of rich kids from Great Brittan who were attending boarding schools. It was like having the cast of Harry Potter waiting on you.
      I live in South Florida. I noticed that most of the high end restaurants in Palm Beach are staffed by young people who clearly grew up on Palm Beach.

      @@mortisrat Catskills, which the resort in the movie is based on, historically had a lot of jewish guests. Other summer resort areas downright didn't want jewish people, like Maine. Most i guess didn't care.
      I don't see any commentary on that topic in the movie.
      The class commentary is pretty much in your face though.

    Patrick’s mother was a dance instructor and Patrick learned to dance with her. He actually blew out his knee playing football in high school so he lost his college scholarship. Instead he went to New York and became a professional ballet dancer. When his knee would no longer allow him to dance so he went to Hollywood to try acting. It shows how different it was in that time period compared to your time. Parents didn't keep tabs on their children in the same way even though our parents were strict. The rules usually were to do whatever your morning chores were then you could go outside until dark or until dinner. Parents expected that you were not going to misbehave but almost everyone did something our parents would not approve of if they knew. This movie surprised me when it first came out because I thought it was going to be a romantic dance movie but it tackled such serious topics. It subtly addressed the change that was happening in the country during this time. I'm happy you both enjoyed it.

    • @Skye_Writer
      @Skye_Writer Рік тому +2

      The parents are also a little less restrictive because both their girls are college age, and at that time they expected their daughters to handle themselves and to forge relationships for marriage (it was actually one of the main reasons girls went to college in the 50s and 60s; to learn how to become good wives. There is a great movie set in the same time period called "Mona Lisa Smile" starring Julia Roberts, and it takes place at Wellesley College, the private women's liberal arts college in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The girls in the film are all highly intelligent (Wellesley has an acceptance rate of just 20%; they require you to have high SATs and GPAs), yet they are mostly focused on getting married and throwing away their degrees (something Julia Roberts is trying to change as she teaches there).
      Anyway, Toby McGuire plays one of the male leads in the movie and he said the key to it was that the director told them all, "These are not young people trying to remain young and single through their twenties. These are 20-year-olds who want to become 40-year-olds right away. They want to be their parents, settled down with a spouse, a house, and kids of their own."
      The Housemans (Baby's parents) feel like they are in a safe, moral environment filled with wholesome people and wholesome entertainment, and the "kids" are supposed to go off and do their own thing.

    • @sadee1287
      @sadee1287 Рік тому +2

      They're at a resort as well, all inclusive and a rather protected environment for the most part. So it wasn't as if Baby's parents didn't know where she was more or less.
      The whole situation with Robbie and how manipulative the situation was behind the scenes was not realized. The fact that the owner of the hotel emphasized to the college boy waiters to schmooze the girls "all the girls -- even the 'dogs"!" means he had his share of knowing these resorts were literal marriage markets as well as a way for them to get financial support from the rich patrons. It's all very layered underneath, which is why this movie has more going for it than is evident on the surface.

    This story isn't about a little girl who's personality just changed from one guy... It is about how everyone treats her like a child, hence the nickname Baby, and it takes us through her transformation from childhood to adulthood. If she didn't stand up for things she would have kept doing everything her family and the people around her said and they would have kept treating her like a child. Patrick's character was the first one who looked at her like an adult. Bc she is an adult and I think you guys missed that aspect. So being a father who is very passionate about your daughter is great in all, but at some point we have to let them grow up and make their own choices.

      If your kids feel like they have to hide things from you for fear of repercussions, they won’t come to you when they truly need you or are in danger/trouble. The strictest parents breed the best liars.
      I always worry when I hear parents talking about keeping their kids as close as possible for as long as possible. Keep them close, but don’t hang on so tight they run away as fast as possible.

    This movie takes place in the Catskills of the 1960s. In the 1970s and prior, Jewish families in New York City used to vacation in the Catskill mountains just north of the city. Antisemitism was rampant and Jews weren't allowed at a lot of the vacation resorts of the time, so the Catskills became an acceptable place to vacation. It became a getaway from the sweltering heat, so many families spent many weeks, even the entire summer, there. Lots of dads would spend the week in the city to work and then drive up to the Catskills where their family was and then go back on Monday. The Catskills had both posh hotels and cabins. My family had a cabin, and my father likes to tell the story of getting caught in traffic and seeing crazy naked people (The Woodstock music festival was up there). Lots of Jewish entertainers made a good living performing in the Catskills (aka The Borscht Belt).

Jennifer Grey was adorable in this, but then she decided to get a nose job a while after and it made her barely recognizable. You two should definitely take dance lessons though. patrick swayze's mother was a dance chorographer and he was an extremely good dancer from a pretty young age. jennifer gray truly didn't know how to dance at the beginning of this movie and swayze, his dance partner from the movie, and the film chorographers of the movie taught her how to dance. the movie segments of her learning to dance are actually clips filmed from her actually learning. the reason that the movie progression (of her going from not knowing how to dance to being very good) is so very convincing because that's exactly what was happening lol.

    The story about the dancer girl-her name is Cynthia Rhodes. She is a professional dancer/actress and can be found in many movies. Her character in this movie gets pregnant and has an abortion, hence the $250. It was done poorly and she gets very sick. The dad comes in to cure her from infection.

    One of the best movies made in NC (Lake Lure). Fun fact, this movie couldn't get a major label and was only set to release in VHS. The blonde dancer, Penny was married to singer Richard Marx. Swayze had surgery on his knee before the movie and was in pain a lot during the shoot. The diner they ate at in NC said that everyone was so pleasant except Jennifer Grey, Baby. Families would go to Catskills on vacation and this is what it's based on, one woman's experience.

      Penny, (Cynthia Rhodes), was also a member of the re-formed synth-pop band 'Animotion' who performed the signature song for the 1988 Dan Aykroyd, Kim Basinger, John Lovitz movie "My Stepmother is an Alien". That song (for the RSR Reactions Channel) was titled "Room To Move", charting at a peak position of #9 on the top 100 for 1989. She is awesome in the official music video!

    Heck Ya! One of my go to romcoms (great music too). Can I suggest “Almost Famous” one of my all time favorite movies. It tells the story of a teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone in the early 1970s, his touring with the fictitious rock band Stillwater, and his efforts to get his first cover story published. The film is semi-autobiographical, as Crowe (the director) himself was a teenage writer for Rolling Stone.

    When I was a teen, I went to the ballet (because my gf-at-the-time wanted to go) and realized for the first time how athletic professional dancers really are. Then, later, watching dance competitions and such, I realized just how much of a sport it really is. So, in a way, "Dirty Dancing" was a great bridge movie for you guys because it's kind of a chick flick but also kind of a sports movie. We even get the training montage when Baby is learning and practicing her moves, we see her skill grow as she trains, and, at the end, they pull off the big move that wins the day.
