Fun fact: the actors who played Ferris' parents fell in love on the set making this movie and got married.
The actor who played the history teacher, Ben Stein, pretty much built his entire career off of that "Bueller...Bueller..." scene. He is actually an economist.
So many famous people in this blockbuster! 👏👏👏
Ben Stein is more than an economist. He has also been a lawyer, legal professor at multiple schools, speechwriter, author, game show host, and documentary filmmaker. He gets a lot of flack for his conservative views, but he's still respected by a lot of people.
More than just an economist, he coined the phrase of the answer to the question he asked in the movie, with the answer of "Voodoo economics".

I love how Amber expresses so much compassion for Cameron.
What a lot of people miss about Cameron is that in the scenes in his bedroom, he is feeling suicidal. The "I'm dying."/"You're not dying, you just can't think of anything good to do." bit is to show that Ferris knows that his friend gets into these bouts of depression, and has more than once had to pull him out of it. He goes about it in a self-indulgent way, but Ferris is honestly trying to keep Cameron from doing something to himself. That is why he is so fast to react in the pool scene. When Cameron finally has his cathartic moment in the garage, that is what makes Ferris think he's "going to be okay." That line has nothing to do with his buddy's potential trouble about the car, but rather that Cameron won't come to serious harm when they eventually go their separate ways.

Uh, NO. He's NOT feeling suicidal. That's RIDICULOUS. Cameron presents as a hypochondriac because he feels he has zero personal autonomy and that he is a victim of the whims of his parents (VERY common for rich kids with ambitious, successful, wealthy parents). Because of this, he has no personal motivation in the beginning to be his own man and make his own decisions. Luckily, Cameron does not ever reach the breaking point of, say, Neil Perry in Dead Poet's Society. Enter Ferris Bueller "You're my hero". It's tongue-in-cheek and lighthearted. And after he demolishes the Ferrari, do you see a suicidal teen? NO. HE FINALLY GETS IT. Being TOO serious is the danger. He'll take the heat and have a talk with his stepfather MAN TO MAN.
@@ClickToPreview there was some backstory that was cut out involving Charlie Sheen's character. in the original draft, he was Garth Volbeck, a childhood friend of Ferris. he also had a rough homelife like Cameron, but being an 8th grader at the time, Ferris couldn't help his friend then, who as we see ended up as a strung out burnout. He was saving Cameron from the same fate.
He is the kind of friend that Cameron needs.
One of the things I really like about this film is how, for most of it, Ferris comes off like a self-indulgent scamp who kind of uses his friends without much thought for the potential consequences the things he pushes them into might have in their lives BUT, as the movie goes on, we get peeks into his motivations to see that it's not all just Ferris being about Ferris. He's trying to pull Cameron out of his rut, he wants them all to spend time together before they go their separate ways after graduation, and, when real trouble happens with the car, Ferris immediately steps up and offers to take full blame so Cameron won't get in trouble. Yeah, Ferris is a trickster, but his motivations are deeper than they seem at first and he's ready to sacrifice himself when things actually get serious. For a character who, unlike most protagonists, doesn't evolve over the course of the story, the filmmakers achieved a similar arc by slowly revealing his motivation rather than changing it. It's underplayed in the movie and is really well done.
Yeah, it's like I said in another comment here: society lets boys and men get away with a LOT without loss of reputation, so maybe Ferris would have been popular anyway, but people seem to genuinely LIKE him and that's not just by chance. He's even super good to his girlfriend, which with a lot of these popular guys that doesn't necessarily happen. People are saying "I wouldn't want my daughter dating this guy" -- whyever not? He's a gem. If my high-school boyfriend had been like him, I think my life would have gone a lot better.

There is an argument to be made that Cameron is actually the protagonist of the film. He's the one who goes through a traditional character arc and comes out changed at the end.
Ferris is like a trickster character here. He causes chaos wherever he goes but he brings so much life with him that people can't help but love him. Look up the trickster archetype to see what I mean. It's a traditional archetype that is present in folklore and mythology all over the world. They are boundary-crossers who playfully disrupt normal life and then re-establish it on a new basis. Loki, in the original Norse Mythology (not the MCU) is a trickster character. So is Brer Rabbit from African American folklore, Hermes from Greek mythology, and and Maui in Polynesian mythology.
I’ve even heard it argued that Ferris and his girlfriend are all just in Cameron’s head (a la Fight Club).
The coyote is the trickster in native American folklore.

I came to see if anybody corrected the who sang Twist and Shout in the movie. If anybody questions can The Beatles rock out? Play them Twist and Shout it always put a smile on my face and makes me want to dance.
You missed the end, the end scene where the principal goes on the school bus was a way to keep the audience in the cinema to stay till the end because there's an end of credit scene, I think it was the first film to ever to use an end credit scene in a movie, but Marvel uses it all the time now.
I watched this in the cinema theatre when it was released and the end credit scene was just the perfect ending to the film, Ferris comes out in his dressing gown telling everybody to go home and that the movie had ended,
The movie Deadpool copied the whole Ferris end credit scene as a homage too, but not alot of people got the reference.

This is where Kevin Fiege got the idea for Marvel end credit scenes. He said he loved it when he watched it and wanted to create a similar feel.

Yes, this is the first time I can remember seeing an end of credit scene. I was 9 when this came out but I saw it on VHS so I was probably 10 or 11 when I first saw the movie. I remember we were all surprised, thought it was so brilliant, and it felt like it had never been done before.
That wasn't Chubby Checker singing during the parade, that was actually the Beatles singing "Twist and Shout". Great reaction.
Yep. Chubby Checker recorded it, but even his version was a cover. It was first released by the Top Notes in 1961. The Beatles version is my favorite, though.

That version of "Twist and Shout" was the Beatles. Great cover. John's voice was raw from recording all day, and it just made the song sound better.

@@realmorgan3075 Chubby Checker wrote "The Twist", which is what they claimed the song to be. Beatles covered "Twist and Shout" which was the song in the movie. Different songs, not connected at all apart from the word "Twist".
For someone with such strong opinions, you should look into learning the facts. Helps you not look like an idiot on the internet.
Someone else may have already mentioned this but, the best part about the parade scene is that the filmmakers really did just take over a Chicago parade so, a lot of the crowd reactions really are just reactions from normal people who had come to see the parade (ignoring the choregraphed dance group, obviously 😆). Particularly, the shot of the dancing construction worker on the scaffolding was just the cameraman noticing a real construction worker dancing and rocking out to the music and was able to catch it on camera. P.S. This specific version of "Twist and Shout" was actually done by The Beatles! Though it was originally recorded by an obscure group called The Top Notes and then, later became a hit when the Isley Brothers covered it.
Please don't take this as a challenge, it's just a clarification. They did put their own float in a real parade without telling everyone, but the media had reported the film was shooting as Hughes was known in the area. That brought an even bigger crowd down. But in total, the parade scene was a three day shoot with rehearsals. (They came back the following weekend.) You're right about a lot of it being spontaneous. Broderick was hurt and couldn't do the choreography on the float, so they just winged it. But you can't set up many close-ups in a real parade, hence them coming back.
Another interesting fact about the Isley Brothers, they wrote the song Shout in 1959. Ron Isley is still making money off that one.
That construction worker dancing is the first thing pops into my head, when I think of this movie!! If he wasn't a professional dancer, he was in the wrong career!
I was in that parade scene with my stepdad and two younger cousins. My mom had to stop by her office (the building where the dancers are on the steps) that Saturday, and while she was upstairs we were in the crowd on the sidewalk right next to the float. We had no idea what it was for but it was a lot of fun.
As the youngest of 6 kids. I would always get away with “I’m sick and can’t go to school “. My mom would always fall for it 😊
When I’m saw Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in the theater in 86. Everyone was leaving the theater and after credits finished rolling, the movie was not yet over. People stayed, my friends and I stayed for that very last scene. Let the credits rolls. But you have to see the very ending because this is an iconic last scene.

You guys are in for a treat John Hughes made some of the most important 80's teen films you guys have already watched The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off but he has so many more classic films that you guys should definitely react to like Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, Weird Science, Some Kind Of Wonderful, he wrote the first three Home Alone films, Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck and many more classic films you guys will love them love the reaction guys keep up the great work

Jonny, I was 33 when this came out so my take on it was imagining how my youth might have been.
I absolutely love Ferris. This is such a wonderful iconic coming of age film. Still a great movie today.

When I was in 8th grade in 1990 the teacher had us do a report on who our hero was. I did mine and said that Ferris Bueller was my hero, I got an F because according to the teacher Ferris Bueller is not a real person. I may have failed in the eyes of the teacher, but won in the eyes of my fellow students and friends.
What a sucky teacher to not accept your report, unless there was a stipulation that it HAD to be based on a real person.. some teachers just don't get it. I would have focused more on your writing and creativity than on if the character was real or not.

Great thing about this movie: The Mom and Dad fell in love on the set of FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF and got married.
The "Voodoo Economics" lecture that Ben Stein gave in the movie is completely improvised by him and is all 100 percent true economics historical facts, since Ben majored in economics at Columbia University and was a speech writer for both Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.
The restaurant "Chez Quiz" (pronounced Shay-Kee) is a play on words for the famous Shakey's Pizza franchise. The building was also previously used for the fine dining scene in "The Blues Brothers", where they go to recruit Mr. Fabulous.
The singing in the parade is my fave scene from this movie. Top tier comedy movie and one of my fave movies of all time.

@@Uatu-the-Watcher did you see their reaction to that movie? It totally went over their heads. They didn't know what to make of it. The Zucker humor just didn't translate. We got it. They probably wouldn't get Mad Magazine or National Lampoon. Millennials just don't seem to have the muscle memory for sarcasm and satire.
They might as well have named the movie "Saving Cameron Frye". The key line was said by girlfriend Sloane to Ferris near the end: "You knew what you were doing when you got up this morning, didn't you?"
I loved this movie when I saw it in the theater 36 years ago and I love it even more now.!
Matthew Broderick (who plays the main guy Ferris) is such a good actor. He was also the voice of Simba in Disney's The Lion King (1994).
His acton film Godzilla (1998) was the first DVD I ever bought, back when DVD's first came out to replace VHS tapes. Definitely worth watching Godzilla if you haven't seen it! 😀
The first film I saw him in was in the medieval fantasy film "Lady Hawk". His way a narrating events around him feel spontaneous and he really is a helluva actor.

One of the greatest movies of the 80's, one that most people should have on their Must-Watch lists.
The scene where the Ferrari is being damaged and then destroyed makes me cringe in fear everytime I watch this movie. Also, whenever one of them comes up for sale at auction, they sell for upwards of $2.5-$5 million dollars.

*Ladyhawke* (1985) starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick is another good movie.
Got to give Ferris props though for telling Cameron he'd take the blame for the car so Cameron wouldn't be in trouble.

I was 17yrs old in 1986, and my mother (as both a parent and an 8th Grade History Teacher) all but FORBID me to go see this movie because "it makes parents and school teachers look stupid."
I went anyway. Still a classic. Mom got over it. LOVE YOU, MOM!!
I am at the point where the valet service returns the car. It wasn't just two random people that went on a joyride, it was the valet service dudes, and rather than taking it immediately and parking it and then retrieving it later, they did this long joyride. That's why when it comes back, Cameron says, wow that was quick. Sometimes it seems like it takes forever for the valet service to go retrieve the vehicle and bring it back. Especially when you are anxious to leave.
Ferris is teaching Cameron how to say YES!
I saw "Ferris Bueller" and instantly clicked watch.. this movie is so good.. and has stood the test of time.. the end.. is hysterical.. glad your getting him caught up!!

This was a John Hughes film. He had a quite the run during the 80's. You really need to watch Sixteen Candles. Also, there is a bit at the very end, as has been pointed out, that is super meta. More of Ferris talking directly to the audience. Its after all the credits have rolled. It puts he cap on the movie. Your observation about kids in the 80's is spot on. They already did The Breakfast Club. But other films I would recommend that were directed by Hughes include Weird Science and Uncle Buck

I was looking through comments to see if anyone mentioned the principal and his status. That just makes that whole scene so much worse.
One thing you young people wouldn't pick up on was that the teacher who said in a bored monotone, "Bueller, Bueller, Bueller", when calling role in class, was Ben Stein who had been a speechwriter for U.S. Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford Jr. before entering the entertainment field as an actor, comedian, and game show host.
“He’s showing you teeth” One of my Dad’s favourite sayings was “Never trust a smiling dog”. He had a card with that saying pinned to the board by his desk. 😆
The parade wasn't staged-it was an actual parade going on and the director got permission to film it. They even built their own float to use for the movie. Nobody knew what was going on, let alone they were filming a movie. The guy on the scaffold wasn't scripted. He was seen by the camera man and quick moved the camera to get him dancing, which is why the scene is a bit shaky.

@@andreadeamon6419 Agree the post credit scene is iconic. It wasn't the first ever post credit scene in a movie, but it popularized the use of end credit tags that are now commonplace in the industry all thanks to this movie.

Loved this movie when it came out. In the late 2000's early 2010s there was a theater that had a double bill of The Breakfast Club and Ferris Buellers Day Off and as we got ready to go in and sit down I looked at my daughter and told her not to take mental notes. She, of course, rolled her eyes.
my favorite scenes are when they're in the museum and the parade when ferris "sings" twist and shout. i mean, i love the whole movie, but those are my favorite bits. i love that you both immediately recognized jennifer grey from Dirty Dancing and kept calling her "Baby". 😊
The scene where Jeannie and Ed Rooney jump out at each other by the refrigerator, and she screams and kicks him in the face. I still roar with laughter at that absolutely vicious self-defense reaction, and Ed plopping straight to the floor.

This is killing me that these movies from the 80's are considered older classic movies, even though those of us who saw them back then knew just how good they were and that they would someday be considered classics, because the 80's seems like yesterday to me! 😄📼📺 I think it's great when I hear Amber talking about the music and movies her mother introduced to her to growing up, and it's fun watching you guys having such a great time watching them now. Another great classic to watch is "Stand By Me", "Big" ( with Tom Hanks), and I can't remember if you have already seen "Splash" (again with Tom Hanks). Another great movie from Tom Hanks is "A League Of Their Own", not an 80's movie but so,so good! Ferris is the fantasy everyone has of the perfect day off school. I was 20 when this came out, still young enough to totally support Ferris' viewpoint. And the song everyone rocks out to in the parade is The Beatles performing Twist and Shout. John Lennon singing.

Also, that rendition of the song "Twist And Shout" was a cover by the Beatles. ( It was originally titled “Shake It Up, Baby” and recorded by the Top Notes and then covered by the Isley Brothers in the early 60s.)
Oh and the song that Ferris did in the parade was "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles... Definitely a good song for you guys to tackle on the music reaction channel.

Great movie. Thank you for the review. Did you watch the encore scene after the credits? Ferris comes out and talks to the audience asking you "You still here? Go home..." They spoof that scene in Deadpool. Deadpool comes out dressed like Ferris and does a similar scene talking to the audience.
The song they played during the credits and during the scene you first see the Ferrari car is called "Oh Yeah!" by Yello. It was a popular dance song for the 80s. Not much lyric wise but it had that great bouncing beat. They also used the song in the Michael J Fox movie "Secret of My Success".

I thought this movie kinda reminded me of something...Phineas and Ferb 😂 My son always liked watching that cartoon. They try to have the best day ever and the older sister is always trying to get them caught by their parents.
This was my childhood! Lol! This movie was so huge when it was released. The song at the end and the Beatles song Twist and Shout became huge hits on the radio. They were played ad nauseum for quite a while.
Quintessential 80s classic! Such a fun movie.
Amber, you can really go with so many different hairstyles... and they all look great on you. Your face really flatters any hairstyle you go with making it all look very natural.

Back when I only seen Mathew in this movie then in Glory which blew my mind with the difference in character.
I'll be honest - I think this movie would have been awful if it hadn't been for the amazing cast. Everyone in it is just _amazing._ Matthew Broderick is so charming you can absolutely see why Ferris gets away with everything, Alan Ruck as Cameron is just... *...goddamn.* Mia Sara is so much better than most people seem to notice (she's a great actress when given good material), etcetera, etcetera. Just...like, the script is good. The cast makes it *_perfect._*
I can't remember if it was a commentary or ferris movie facts video, but Alan and Matthew had worked with each other for some time in a play some point before this. They were buds already. 🙂

What ever happened to Mia Sara? I remember her from this movie, and "Legend" with Tom Cruise. Did she ever do anything after that?
And don't forget Ben Stein. He was AMAZING as the teacher!
Love the "Danke Shoen" and "Twist and Shout " parade portion of this movie, with all of the excellent dancers and extras. That scene is showcasing a beautiful downtown Chicago from 1986.
BTW the window washers and construction workers dancing above the parade were unpaid and just enjoying the music as they were working.
"Danke Schoen" was sung by Wayne Newton in 1963 when he was 21, and "Twist and Shout " was sung by the Beatles also in 1963, the year before they 1st came to the United States.
This is a classic, watched with my kid 2 years ago and he loved it. I have watched this movie so many times lost count. It's a must watch. The song was Twist and Shout by The Beatles

The two songs that Ferris Bueller is singing on the float are Danke Schoen by Wayne Newton and Twist and Shout by the Beatles sung by John Lennon a cover that was done originally by the top notes in 1961. I grew up in Chicagoland and was about the age of the John Hughes characters during the original runs. It was wonderful to finally see local sights on the big screen (not known since The Blues Brothers). Planes, Trains & Automobiles is my favorite, but have tissues ready.
I swear, this movie never gets old! It is such a classic teen movie, that every generation can enjoy even if they are some totally different decades. Such a great flick! :)

I had a friend like that too. We were always messing with him and trying to set him up to get busted, just to see how he would squeak his way out of it. And whenever he caught on to what we were doing, he would say "You wanna see Ferris?".
Matthew Brodericks breakout movie!! Came out the year I graduated High School. So much fun, and he has always been and oft-overlooked under-rated actor. Luv Ya!
I thought his breakout movie was 1983's Wargames. Ferris Bueller's Day Off was the movie that made him a big star.

He was actually wanted by Gary David Goldberg for the role of Alex Keaton in Family Ties (1982) before Michael J Fox was cast
Before playing Ferris he was in the stage play by Neil Simon called Biloxi Blues where he worked with Alan Ruck (Cameron) and then Broderick returned in 1988 for the film adaptation of the play

A movie that continually was breaking the 4th wall. Matthew Broderick was 24 years when he was in this movie. So many other movies have paid homage to this movie's end credits

Such a fun movie.Back when Chicago (the Loop, anyway) was fun. Was my high school band in the parade for "Twist & Shout." They were in the parade scene for "Blues Brothers" as well. And when Ferris is beatin' feet on the way home at the end, well, that Ska music is just the best.
