To those of you who already have a Vive/Oculus, or are strictly a PC gamer, this is not for you. You can't criticize something that was never intended for your market. This is for console gamers who want to experience VR for themselves. It's also a fairly non-intimidating and simple VR solution for the average person who may be interested in the technology. I think it does what's it's designed to do well.
Thank you, I feel as though people are forgetting how inaccessible the Vive/Oculus are. It's expensive and somewhat difficult to care for, what with downloading software and making a computer that can run it. PS VR isn't suppose to be the greatest thing, it's suppose to be accessible to the average consumer, which is a big step VR needs to take.
I don't mind if the VR doesn't have head tracking even, I'd rather have a nice wide display that I can use because sitting at a workstation to play games all day eventually gets tiring. Though with my eye sight needing new glasses I hope the VR tech doesn't make it get worse.
I tried Farpoint and Batman last week at a Sony exhibition in Glasgow and didn't notice any issues what so ever. Farpoin without any doubt is the future of FPS gaming, so accurate with great visuals and very smart control system.
I'm exclusively a PC gamer but im rooting for this big time! The VIVE and Oculus are way too god damn expensive. That's the platform and the VR devise all in one... while if i got down the PC VR route i have to build a major gaming rig, (i already have that) and then shell out $700+ for an oculus even more for the vive.... I'm really routing for sony here. their product may not be perfect, but we need it nonetheless.
Agreed. And I think Sony is doing a great job with this product launch. I hope they incorporate VR with the many many entertainment divisions of Sony. Like live concerts with a VR camera front and center, Movies ect
The main deal breaker for companies is the cost to produce them, which means we need cheaper components and displays to produce cheaper products. This means 'China' has a role to play to cheapen components a ton, but not talking about 'cheap' quality, but 'cheaply priced at a decent standard'. For instance the cost of a 448p display on the Google Pixel, as it's a $899 smartphone with VR compatible devices. Can we get at least 480p (physical) display on a 5 inch screen under $99 per module? Heck, is it even possible to create some new projection tech that isn't using the traditional displays, and basically 'beams' the visual information into our eyes?
***** i built my computer to be VR ready capable to be perfectly honest. And then i decided not to go with the $350 dev kits of the oculus because i wanted the full fat experience. Makes perfect consumer sense im sure. Then they launched the oculus at double the price of the dev kit... I called bullshit on that personally, so i held off. Same time Vive was launched... even more expensive... so i calling bullshit on that too of course and decided to wait till gen 2. and probably i will have to do some major upgrades if not a full rebuild of my stupidly expensive gaming PC by the time we even get gen 2.... or IF we get it...cos they are not selling anything like the numbers they were predicting... ANd that's why the Sony VR solution is so damn important. maybe i will never even get a chance to try one, but it's an important product, and we all need it to succeed, that is to say people who want VR need it to succeed.
I am in the same exact boat. Built a beast PC and had the DK2. Sold it before the CV1 came out. but nothing looks particularly attractive as far as the price jump and resolution (non) jump so I am hoping gen2 delivers. So in the mean time.. GO SONY!!!
The Cohesive Garage Lol ye i looked at 2nd hand ones too, the people selling them, still think they are worth 95% full price. or they are just miffed and want their money back. The question is how quickly gen 2 comes. And if there are more competitors into the market to continue to bring prices down. Xbox say they are going to do some VR device also.
Great video, thanks for explaining you need to get extra $100 for the camera, I think the camera should be bundled with the $399 box and sell everything for $499, some people may get the box only and be surprised they can't play.
Technonaut games Sadly, I think their promise of 'PSVR support from day 1' is not gonna be fulfilled. Will be awesome if it is, but it's looking highly unlikely at this point.

The only VR headset that interests me remotely is the Oculus for it's Desktop VR experience. It can create a 360 degree view monitor with just the 1 VR headset. I feel over time, monitors will be going out of fashion for VR headsets taking the main display, or at least create a polarising market.

Cut the wire off, double the field of view and stick 4k displays on each eye. That's where VR needs to be. With glove controllers and immersive forcefeedback.
I have no problem with my VR I think its a blast. It really lets me go off into another reality and got me back playing with my ps4. Its hillarious watching others play on it.
It's cool that companies are still trying but they are still missing a lot for a polished, solid well rounded experience with vr.For these years to come i wont even contemplate buying one of this things
Why don't you show the songs used at the end of the video like VOX do it... I love yours used songs but cannot know them (because there generally coming from APM search).
This actually makes sense to me price wise. Combining this with a PS4 Pro will be the most cost effective solution delivering highest quality of experience per $. The Gear VR looks like the biggest gimmick to me due to that shitty ARM CPU with 1/10th of the graphics power, the only thing is good at is the cinematic mode and that's about it.
I love Vr Hating Trolls most of them have never even tried it have some impression it is like a 3DTV and try convince themselves it will fail and their 52 inch flat screen is the way forward :).....In the meantime someone out there pulls out a little smartphone from their pockets plugs in a headset and are on a completelt different level with no screen around and even when watching something not in Virtual Reality on it like on Netflix or other video service apps they are watching it on a huge cinema type screen where the surroundings change from dark to light when the screen changes as though they were really in a cinema....All those VR Hating Trolls who never experienced it still looking at the 52 inch screens thinking they are superior :)......VR the future it is called moving on and progressing not just with games and entertainment but for other industries too which are adopting the technology into their lives.....sounds more like a success to me than a fail....:)....
What I'd be interested is if the Playstation VR doubles as a display for non-VR games, when you can't use that TV. I doubt Sony would want the device to be usable on a PC, but being able to utilize the display connected to a PC can be interesting too, like gaming in bed lol, or just watching anime.
I'm sure there will be a way to hook up to pc a couple months after release. It would be pretty simple for people to make programs for. Also That's one reason I am getting it, so I can play normal games on big screen.
she said it at the beginning.. virtual reality is still a novelty. Maine stream isn't interested yet because of the low resolution. They need to fix that or it'll stay a novelty.
Gold Channel Umm yes it is. For the most part anyway. The best be headset out right now, HTC vive has a little over 100 thousand users. That is nothing. An they'll stay getting low numbers and till they can fix the bugs with vr and then they'll get the main stream on board.
Gold Channel Yes, there very big bugs actually. Like the screen door effect that has you seeing thousands of pixels. Making what ever you're looking at seem super blotchy and unrealistic, even with real 360 pictures or video it still looks terrible.
hi I'm a very ill disabled person and cant leave my room so they are getting me a ps vr oct 13 so I can "travel" in vr but important question do you think it can be used by someone lying in bed maybe propped up but I need at least a soft pillow behind my head to support it? I am thinking if the camera is placed up high and angeled down towards me (btw whats the closest you can get to the camera?) it can read the vr lights and I will be able to turn head left and right and up and down pretty good with vr on on pillow this might work what if your opinion? Thank you very much p.s. they now have a 55" lg oled 4k 3d tv at the foot of the bed I am using now which if pretty immersive for me. btw its ironic I have know about vr and how it can be helpful for a disabled person to get out of their limitations all my life even before I got il and now finally I'm getting vr ironically when I need it the most and in my final months of life lol :)
Maybe get one of the camera stands that clips to the top of the TV (try Amazon). This is what I use. It will keep the camera firmly in place and you can adjust the angle. If the camera is too far away to accurately read you when placed at the foot of the bed, you could mount the camera to a tripod placed on the bed itself. www.amazon.co.uk/Konig-Traveller-Camera-Camcorder-Tripod/dp/B0017PEBZW/ref=sr_1_10?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1476296958&sr=1-10&keywords=camera+tripod
thanks I cant mount it on the tv its a lg oled 4k 3d tv that is only 1/4 thick at the top and has a chrome edge and white back so I wouldn't want to mess it up its also in a big wheeled stand so that its right at the edge of the bed and tilted down towards me ill probably put the ps4 cam on top of a tripod extended up above and behind the tv and angled down.
we are setting it up this morning its tricky because of all the cables and because I have to have the ps4 in the next room it puts out too much heat and I have to be kept cool. so using extension camera, usb and hdmi cables! camera turns out to be least of the problems so far...
Still can't decide PS VR and the Vive. Vive seems technically better but I would have to rearrange my entire room to try to get enough space. And PS VR seems like it has the better actual games but lots of technical issues with tracking.
VR basically has to take off, otherwise the gaming market is going to crash big time. We have basically seen everything, played nearly every type of game, and the graphics are pretty much as good as they're gonna get. VR is a way to "restart" so to speak and go back to simple type games, so the gaming market can continue. Eventually VR will only get better, until (WAY far down the road) we are virtually in the game talking to each other with full body motion with the ability to do anything. Do you really expect to see Xbox 9 and PS 10 on a 2D platform? Not gonna happen. Gaming has nowhere else to go at this point.
John Kevin Villar unfortunately I do. Only used it for 1 game. Waste of money. Was hoping this would change that. Also. Why would I consider buying this if I didn't have a PS4? Do you use your brain before trying to troll people online ?
the original PlayStation 4 will not be able to run this VR, it needs at least 90fps with the VR Headsets 1920x1080 resolution. the ps4 can bare do 1080p at 30fps
The playstion 4 is pretty weak, but for super simple games like the ones in the video not much power is needed to achieve that. The resolution is also only half that of the vive/rift iirc. But yea you are right, games like driveclub would have to be extremly cut down to run at three times the framerate.
PS devices generally gets cracked or modified to be usable on PC, and this is the main deal with PS3 controllers used as a gamepad for PC games, which doesn't have support till the PS4. If Sony lets Playstation VR be usable on a PC, they actually would benefit from encoaching onto the other VR device's territory, of being useful as a extra 'display' at least. PS4's console's GPU is quite weak this generation, and with how small the display (the PS VR uses a single display) is used in the headset, even a typical $100-200 dollar GPU can power 120hz of refresh rate easily! Display Size: 5.7 inches Resolution: 1920 x RGB x 1080 (960 x RGB x 1080) Refresh Rate: 120hz, 90hz Field of View: Approx. 100 degrees Lets see, this headset uses 1920 by 1080 resolution in a 960 x 1080 physical screen size. The Google Pixel costs 899 CDN dollars and has a screen of 448p rendering 1080p... I'd say that's quite a step up from 'phone' based VR by 2x.
I won't use my glasses in VR. I know the PSVR is capable of it, but not having them on allows you to get the unit closer to your face, reducing (if not eliminating) light bleeding in from the real world.
To those of you who already have a Vive/Oculus, or are strictly a PC gamer, this is not for you. You can't criticize something that was never intended for your market. Ry Well said! I am personally a PC gamer, and own a Vive myself. That was really well said!
Just one thing: have you actually seen Rift setup process on PC?
I don't mind if the VR doesn't have head tracking even, I'd rather have a nice wide display that I can use because sitting at a workstation to play games all day eventually gets tiring.
Though with my eye sight needing new glasses I hope the VR tech doesn't make it get worse.
It doesn't seem that bad. Looks like it's just on the acceptable side of the cheap. Kinect was apparently quite well on the unacceptable side.
Such a beautiful video.
ya
Agreed. Very well done.
This is why I subscribed. Cinematography is always on point.
right, because who cares about the content? oh and that was sarcasm; you are a moron.
She did really well.. this review is so dope visuals looks crispy!
This was perfect!
I've tried PS VR 3xs never had any problems and visually looked better than expected
The Verge's videos and camera work are so slick. Great video Adi!
I'm usually very critical of The Verge about their reviews but this was great. Well done.
The video was awesome. The place you recorded at was amazing! The lighting and shots were superb.
Great editing and review. Keep it up!
I tried Farpoint and Batman last week at a Sony exhibition in Glasgow and didn't notice any issues what so ever. Farpoin without any doubt is the future of FPS gaming, so accurate with great visuals and very smart control system.
So near!!! Can't wait to play Driveclub on my wheel!
is this a good cheaper alternative?
this was a fantastic review and a great conclusion
Out of all the reviews I read and watched about ps vr this was easily the most informative and non biased one , Great job verge
HQuality video!!
Now we need a comparison (:
Noted!
I can't wait to play my vr with my PlayStation pro 😇
Jason Templeman it didn't come out yet…
*The Last Word* He didn't say it either, hence the ''can't wait'' portion.
Anti Riku thx
I only care about driving games in VR so the controllers are not an issue for me.
I honestly think that Adi is one of the best creators on The Verge, great video.
Nice review!
I love the Campbells pillow! Great review!
i was just enjoying the music and the beautiful pans.. :)
wonderfully produced review. considering getting this in the future!
Great review. I love the host, her voice and presentation is great. Well shot and directed to.
Really like that dock! Super clean visually. Question: does the system have the 'screen-door' effect like the early builds of the Oculus?
Great video, I really want one lol.
I'm exclusively a PC gamer but im rooting for this big time!
The VIVE and Oculus are way too god damn expensive. And in this iteration i.e. first generation, only appealing to a very small amount of people as evidenced by the tiny numbers who bought and use VIVE (statistics are available)
So we all need Sony to break the mould here. we need competitive pricing and indeed we need more competitors in the market place. Gabriel Hernandez They have that. Its called the Launch Bundle.
A great and thorough review!
Driveclub VR looks amazing .. with a g27 wheel
Even better with a T300 wheel, shifter and handbrake. I'm ready!!!
still waiting for someone to check out project cars to decide if i get it or not but probably
Technonaut games
Sadly, I think their promise of 'PSVR support from day 1' is not gonna be fulfilled.
Will be awesome if it is, but it's looking highly unlikely at this point.
***** you're probably right but it does run vr native on pc so it might not take too long either. hopefully anyway
Technonaut games
The thing is, they aren't updating the game anymore. Many people think this is because of fanatecs relationship with Sony. If SMS update their game now, they HAVE to disable support for fanatecs steering wheels, which would obviously anger a lot of their fans.
There's still a possibility for VR support, but there are some hurdles to go through.
Great review!

It'll be pixely and shitty low res though. There's a reason they don't go hard on advertising that part. Better to just sit closer to your Tv
Ditto. I really don't even care about the motion tracking all that much. I really just want a TV replacement that feels like I'm playing on a giant screen with no space. Like playing Battlefield and all that exists to your eyes is the in-game world.
ImperatorZed
Reading comprehension is important. I want to be able to lie down and watch movies. I cannot do that currently with
1. A TV of any sort
2. My phone
3. A portable device
This is literally the only device I would be able to do that with.

excellent review. well done!
.....That Moment When AutoPlay Ruins Your Comment. --_--
DJHeroMasta that's why there is a button to turn it off
Yeah I know but I often reset my browser. I forget.
DJHeroMasta oh then turn it off again lol
All I want to know is ... will I be able to play horizon: zero dawn using the vr headset? And other normal games?
Great video guys forreal, i gotta ask tho lol whats the song names I'm really loving them !
Found it yet?
Just to be sure. This works with the first PlayStation model? Because I'm seeing the vr with the PlayStation slim and with the pro but not with the original model. I'm planning to get this so I want to make sure.
I love Adi's reviews. She's by far the best reviewer I've come across.
Can you share with us where you're getting these awesome songs?
Thanks for review, im looking to buy one
could you maybe show us how big it is because maybe some people's heads are to small
like sizes in inches and centimeters
i cant Find that online
it's adjustable, I tried it at gamescom. Maybe it's a bit big for a child under the age of 10 but for an adult it's totaly fine
don't worry mate, I've tried it, its very adjustable.. you can even fit it on an elephant head if you can fit on mine XD.. the most comfortable headset even if you wear glasses
Cut the wire off, double the field of view and stick 4k displays on each eye. That's where VR needs to be.
With glove controllers and immersive forcefeedback.
That's where Rift and Vive are heading and beyond. Check out Abrash on Conn3ct.
PS4 would not handle 4K x2 well if at all.
I have no problem with my VR I think its a blast. It really lets me go off into another reality and got me back playing with my ps4. Its hillarious watching others play on it.
I enjoy watching this right after watching their first impressions of PSVR2. Oh I can't wait.
Same
Should I get it
just asking but do you need a tv? so i could just take ps4 and vr and go play somewhere?
the TV is just for others to see what you are seeing. PSVR have cinema mode, so it works as a flat screen for all games/movies.
Gybrocker the gamer you don't need a screen. Just the PS4 , camera and Ps VR unit.
EVOLICIOUS Why need a TV to calibrate the VR? Its not like you are going to see what is on the screen.
at least you can play puzzle games with it hahahha 😂😂
I don't need to buy the Vr launch bundle because I already hav the move controller sitting in dust
It's cool that companies are still trying but they are still missing a lot for a polished, solid well rounded experience with vr.For these years to come i wont even contemplate buying one of this things
Such a beautiful living space!
Why don't you show the songs used at the end of the video like VOX do it... I love yours used songs but cannot know them (because there generally coming from APM search).

The Gear VR looks like the biggest gimmick to me due to that shitty ARM CPU with 1/10th of the graphics power, the only thing is good at is the cinematic mode and that's about it.
Sergii Cherniavskyi That is the truth.
Games are still so downgraded though :\ Like RE7 will be.. be Valkyrie looks like fun!
I'm interested to see if the pro adds anything.
***** The future is an exiting thing indeed. :)
they did confirm that the pro will offer enhancements for VR games.
In two years Sony won't even remember this, just like the Move controllers as their response to the Wii.
Simon Elias Yeah but we actually love this i cant wait to get one soon
You're right this VR does have more to it than the original Move ever did or could.
I think sony will make new controllers for the vr but sony cant just forget vr its like the future of gaming
This aged well
What does the Cinematic Mode look like?
Dope video!😄😎

anyone know what Sony's sales expectations are for PSVR by the end of the year?
I love my psvr cant wait for psvr 2
Did anyone catch what music that was?
The tracks are from Epidemic Sound: ES_Midnight Breaks 1 - Da Tooby, ES_Rotations 3 - Jack Elphick, ES_Experimental Electro 3
Thanks
What I'd be interested is if the Playstation VR doubles as a display for non-VR games, when you can't use that TV.

its called cinematic mode. you can play games on a screen inside the psvr that appears to be a preety big screen. look it up sounds preety cool
I'm sure there will be a way to hook up to pc a couple months after release. It would be pretty simple for people to make programs for. Also That's one reason I am getting it, so I can play normal games on big screen.
Glad I went with the Rift.
Adi is one of the best VR reviewers in the world.
Good review. I already have a Vive and Rift so going to be passing on this though.
2:34 - 4:53 What is the music in the background?
yep sony did well
lets see how long will sony support the playstation vr like they did with the ps vita.
I think this product is going to tank!
well i got the bundle so ama see whats up next week
Where can i get this stand for the headset and move controllers?
I like turtles
i think if you could use a navigation controller, for games like skyrim vr, it would have been great. but alas sony isn't that forward thinking.
when it is coming to India?
is all the ps apps vr compatible to?
This will never catch on. The price and setup is too much to play puzzle games that look like glorified Android games.
Have you tried VR? You can't imagine it like you see it in this video--picture it like you're INSIDE the game. It becomes much more impressive.
Never is a long time. You gotta remember this stuff is 1st Gen.
VR on phones crap.
Galaxy S8 4K will change your mind about smartphones being good for VR
Kai-Zer Alcadias PC will always be superior. NO battery life, can be easily upgraded, more titles, and can be used for gaming with good controllers.

hi I'm a very ill disabled person and cant leave my room so they are getting me a ps vr oct 13 so I can "travel" in vr but important question do you think it can be used by someone lying in bed maybe propped up but I need at least a soft pillow behind my head to support it?
It should work fine.
thanks!
I've never seen that camera before
Still can't decide PS VR and the Vive. Vive seems technically better but I would have to rearrange my entire room to try to get enough space. And PS VR seems like it has the better actual games but lots of technical issues with tracking.
EVOLICIOUS haven't been keeping up with steam VR games. Are there any actual full blown big studio games? I'm not really into indie games usually.
How much did Sony pay verge?
$0
It's not done in dollars anymore. Now it's payed in 'access'.
if they where paid they have to by UA-cam rules to disclose that info at the start of the video or in the description
Because Valve don't have any money lol
wyemun chin I dunno, this review seems pretty fair.
Why so much hate?
I play walking dead saints and sinners and have no problems with it but I did play for 2 hours and got motion sickness lol
This my friends, is peasantry at it's finest!
probably had problems because of the lighting in the room. mine work perfectly fine
Why does everbody on earth not use wrist straps for these kind of controllers, and yet still choose not to remove them?
do u need a ps4 to play this?
Errr... I keep using it, and so do many VR HMD owners. But perhaps you are talking about general population playing Candy Crush.
I love my HTC Vive. From what you are saying...i dont need this.
cause you dont have ps4 haha HTC VIVE is meh
John Kevin Villar unfortunately I do. Only used it for 1 game. Waste of money. Was hoping this would change that. Also. Why would I consider buying this if I didn't have a PS4? Do you use your brain before trying to troll people online ?
htc vive has full 360 degree tracking though...
I wanna be able to play battle field in vr or call of duty or I'm not buying
Its the lightest of all the headsets, (weight)
Nice vr
there is a new controller coming.
Day one!!!
really needs a killer app
Farpoint, Allison Road, Robinson the Journey....
the original PlayStation 4 will not be able to run this VR, it needs at least 90fps with the VR Headsets 1920x1080 resolution. the ps4 can bare do 1080p at 30fps
you dumb
The playstion 4 is pretty weak, but for super simple games like the ones in the video not much power is needed to achieve that. The resolution is also only half that of the vive/rift iirc. But yea you are right, games like driveclub would have to be extremly cut down to run at three times the framerate.
Can u use this on pc?
PS devices generally gets cracked or modified to be usable on PC, and this is the main deal with PS3 controllers used as a gamepad for PC games, which doesn't have support till the PS4.
If Sony lets Playstation VR be usable on a PC, they actually would benefit from encoaching onto the other VR device's territory, of being useful as a extra 'display' at least.
PS4's console's GPU is quite weak this generation, and with how small the display (the PS VR uses a single display) is used in the headset, even a typical $100-200 dollar GPU can power 120hz of refresh rate easily!
Display Size: 5.7 inches
Resolution: 1920 x RGB x 1080 (960 x RGB x 1080)
Refresh Rate: 120hz, 90hz
Field of View: Approx. 100 degrees
Lets see, this headset uses 1920 by 1080 resolution in a 960 x 1080 physical screen size.
The Google Pixel costs 899 CDN dollars and has a screen of 448p rendering 1080p... I'd say that's quite a step up from 'phone' based VR by 2x.
is this making us people with glasses get contacts?? kind of feels like we don't have a real choice.
No the PSVR is the only Headset that had glasses users play a factor in the design thus making it comfortable to play with glasses
Thanks for the info
Much appreciated
I won't use my glasses in VR. I know the PSVR is capable of it, but not having them on allows you to get the unit closer to your face, reducing (if not eliminating) light bleeding in from the real world.
