  • Batman Ninja was something we were all stoked for, but when it finally came out most of us we're less than impressed. But is Batman Ninja really such a stinker? Or are we missing some context to make this anime movie great?

When I first saw it, I knew exactly that it was going to be a crap-load of nonsense, since Bats is already a ninja, so I went in expecting dumb bullshit
And I freaking loved it, gave me some good laughs, and Poison Ivy looked damn fine.
But yeah, it's enjoyable if you've just turned your brain off, and expect dumb bullshit to be happening.
Glad that you covered it, even if I wouldn't have minded if you didn't, it was still good to hear your thoughts on it.

If you watch the BTS stuff on the home release, you'll actually learn a lot of the mindset behind the director and screenwriter. They didn't want to just make a Batman film that took place in Japan. In fact, they didn't want to make a typical batman film at all. They wanted to make something distinctly Japan; something only the Japanese could make. They literally say "This isn't Japan through the eyes of Batman; its Batman through the eyes of Japan." Its not surprising at all that some would hate this film as its not at all a typical Batman story. Its just a dumb fun Japanese story using pieces of something westerns know to tell a story that couldn't be made in any other situation.

I've always been curious about how Japan see's American comic book characters. I like imagining a strange mirror world over there where a small section of Manga shops have place for American Comic books, a Japanese version of Toonami plays dubbed Batman: the animated series and Spectacular Spider-Man, and an ongoing debate in the community over wither or not the subbed version of Justice League Unlimited is better then the dubbed version.

I find it funny that nearly every time America tries to interpret a Japanese character we seem to always wind up with Dragon Ball: Evolution. But when Japan does it and fails we get something terrible but enjoyably cheesy like japanese Spider-Man and Batman Ninja.

For all the strangeness in this film and out of character writing/odd adaptation choices I'll at least give these writers credit for recognizing and adapting my favorite thing about Damian Wayne; his almost super human ability to befriend random animals. I swear if you don't know about it you should look up this kids menagerie last I checked he had a pet cow, a great dane, and a what I can most easily describe as a bat-gorilla-cat hybrid called Goliath a pet monkey ninja is exactly the kind of friend I would expect Damian to make on a trip to feudal japan.

Honestly, I don't know why people are so down on this movie. It was over the top insanity, and after the first giant robot if you're still watching, you've probably already embraced it. Like Gurren Lagann, you just want to see just how far this insanity can go.

    • @kaijuguy19

    • @SingeScorcher
      @SingeScorcher 5 років тому +1

Honestly I have a kind of Meh feeling towards it because the movie has a lot of scenes building up some really good Ninja style sequences (Stealth, Infiltration, Deceptive Combat, etc.) but then instead turned to big explosions and giant robots, coming almost out of nowhere. Like after the whole bit with Batman committing to being the Shinobi he's being revered as and seeing all the cool ninja weapons/tools, I would have liked to actually see him USE those tools/weapons/techniques for more than 2 minutes.
(Still overall not a terrible movie, I just think it has a problem deciding what it's tone is)

  • @tonlito22

Gaijin: Harley Qwin is a combination of Oichi (Nobunaga's Sister) and Ranmaru Mori (his squire, boifriend, lover and heir apparent) this is shown by her serving sake to him (something both famously did) the ball toy thing (which Oichi is sometimes depicted with) her acting as his aide in battle (like Ranmaru) and of course choosing suicide with the Joker on the boat (also like Ranmaru).
And was Mitsuhide Akechi's betrayal really out of nowhere? Nobunaga constantly abused Mitsuhide, called his kumquat head, let his mom get killed in a hostage exchange, and the cherry on top: the burning of that one famous Buddist Temple I can't remember the name of right now. Actions that should be unthinkable for a Samurai are understandable (but perhaps not excusable) if you remember that he is a Man as well. Steadily chipping away at Mitsuhide's pride and face, Nobunaga subverted his retainer's honor and lay the ground work for his own death in Kyoto. Though Mitsuhide lit the flame, Nobunaga had built his own funeral pyre.

Ahron 756 Power Rangers uses the suits props and stock footage from Super Sentai. Super Sentai has been around since like the 60s or 70s. MIGHTY MORPHIN Power rangers uses the suits props and footage from zyuranger but both series are completly different. Zyuranger revolves around warriors of ancient tribes revived in the modern era whily MMPR was about teenagers. The first season also had the same main villain but she had different names and personalities. The white ranger was from a completly different Super Sentai series which is why you didnt really see him interact with the other rangers much while suited up. There was no stock footage of the white ranger with the zyurangers. I also believe Lord Zedd was an original character for Power Rangers.
FUN Fact the main actor for breaking bad did some voice acting for the monsters in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

As an American comic book fan... This actually isn't that weird in terms of the batshit insanity that you can find in comics. Vampirella had a story arc where she had a Mad Max style road trip mutilating people attacking her in a world where nobody could die. Superman had some insane stuff happening during the Silver Age. Spider-Man had the Clone Saga. Comics by their very nature are silly and often insane.

Reasons why average batman fan love batman :
    1. He doesn't kill no matter what.
    2. He is dark.
    3. He is edgy.
    4. He is the boss.
    5. He don't rely on machines, monkeys or bats to destroy a fucking machine.

The "Bat Clan" didn't really faze me, due to trying to wrap my head around "Dark Knights: Metal". Imagine Bruce still did that time hopping during "The Return of Bruce Wayne", but Barbatos never subverted the prehistoric Bat Tribe, and as such the Court of Owls was never formed. Instead, in this continuity, we get the Bat Clan. Because comic book logic. Still confused? Good. That means that you are still sane.

Mostly because I got most of the things thanks to you (BTW cool to know about the flower), and yeah their was some stupid things that even the love of the over the top craziness like the end credits thing you mentioned. I in the end enjoyed it, loved Joker and honestly going to order me some of the Batman Ninja figures. My friend who loves Batman but not to knowledgeable on japan outside of modern anime, he really didn't care for Batman Ninja and needed all the references explained.
This movie really didn't feel like it was made for the Western audiences.

Dusty Bunny it could represent a dream? Or fantasy to better put it. Or to change your perception because of what the scene contains. An artstyle shift can do that right. So it makes you think "this isn't right, it feels weird" or something along them lines. Or its a reference to a certain art style :S

Batman Ninja is a mess. That doesn't make it bad, it just makes it unfocused. It's almost entirely Style over substance, and if you can get past that, it's a wild ride, and it's a blender-full of cool set pieces and admittedly GORGEOUS animation.
But Bruce's fucking gross ass haircut from the scene where he's hiding in plain sight with Catwoman could have been removed.

Recommend HEAVILY to watch this with the Japanese audio track and subs, cuz they changed 95% of the dialogue for the English one, to try and make it align more with Batman, but that kinda defeats the purpose of the film's aesthetic and point (like Gaijin said, to broaden the audience of Batman than to solely appease batman fans.). Hence, it's better watching the original version rather than one that tries too hard to place it in the regular Batman mythos.

  • @rodney2x48

I loved the movie. I know some people will hate it because it's too silly and not like any recent Batman media, but I think of Batman Ninja in the same sense as The Brave and the Bold. It's a silly throwback to a time where Batman stories weren't afraid of being dumb fun and insane. I loved Batman Ninja and I especially liked finding out all the Japanese history references through out. I hope DC does more stuff like this; a Superman or Green Lantern anime, for example, would be pretty sweet.

Personally, I loved this movie and all the anime and cultural influence! I'm very glad Gaijin Goomba pointed out so many awesome historical ties which only makes me appreciate the movie even more. Sure, it wasn't more realistic or as science fictiony as the Batman we Americans are used to, but it was loads of fun and I think that was the true main goal of the film makers. Part of me does wish there had been more to the narrative and more of a plausible solution, but I did enjoy the outrageous fantasy that only Japan could bring us. It was amazing and I'm glad I watched it. I hope we can do more movies like this in the future honestly.

I thought it wasn't to bad up until the infamous 'transforming castle' climax. But even then I found myself saying it was both the strangest and most awesome sequence I have ever seen. Is it 'Batman"? No, but...we are talking about a Batman in feudal Japan who is leading a clan of ninjas because of 'prophecy'. If you were expecting the traditinal depiction of Batman...yeah.
It was good, not great or genre changing. But a decent alternative take on Batman, and I actually had a good time watching it.

These are all very fair and well laid out points. The story and character decisions are my biggest gripe with this film. I threw out all my suspension of disbelief when he got lost without his tech, that just wasn't the character anymore.
The main thing though that did it for me though was I first watched the dub of this film. That was and wasn't my fault. As a Batman animated film, I treated this as one of those, not as an anime. The digital version also sold the dub as the primary version, so the sub option was oddly hidden. This dub was ATROCIOUS! I may find some ok and some campy, this made a rewatch undoable. The film what made in 3D, and lip-synced to Japanese. That made the English dialogue unbearably awkward and over the top.
I really want to try to give this another shot, but that dub was so bad I can't watch the real version.
