      I need point out one thing. From what I did see until now, your Bird Shinobi has actually shockingly unimpressive perception. What is one of core skills for this profession (weird that you didn't mention that?). It isn't a problem as be simply isn't Gary Stu and he exceed in other stuff related to this profession. Just it is quite funny flaw in his case. I love dialog from first episode when he point out that they should pick for night-watch those who see in darkness, to be only one who can't do that in his team. It was absolutely hilarious and it show his class that he acknowledged this as his weakness. I love it :D

    When making my ninja inspired character I decided to use the thief archetype since they can use items as a bonus action. I wanted to be a tool using ninja in a magical world, getting by on my cleverness and focusing on the versitility of the objects at my disposal.
    I had planned on using caltrops, flammable oil, grappling hooks, and a set of whistles with diverse sounds ranging from owl hoot to ghost wail. I had even come up with a few ways to utilize one of my favorite hazards in dnd: brown mold.
    Brown mold grows rapidly in the presence of extreme heat (fire), and the mold feeds on heat. The mold actually absorbs so much heat that creatures standing in patches of brown mold take substantial cold damage. The cold makes it useful for preserving meats for a long voyage, and can be mixed into a firebomb to coat enemies in freezing fungus. Shuriken coated in brown mold can inflict a painful cold over time, or be used to quietly put out a torch from a distance. Small amounts of brown mold can even be used to reduce swelling from an injury!
    A huge part of my build was thinking of all the various ways I could use items and tools. Unfortunately I am a forever DM, and won't be able to use my ninja for the foreseeable future.

    Another reason why picking Kenku for a ninja is great: They literally cannot divulge information they don't have spoken vocabulary for. Kenku can only communicate via mimicking the voices of others, so in order to get one to talk, you have to talk first.
    I'd also go a bit into Monk to get the Unarmored Movement buffs to allow them to use the Water Spider shoes and the Shuko climbing claws. And, of course, the taijutsu allowing you to stun opponents to make escapes easier.

      @@rollingthunder1043 not really Rouge are slippery bastards who have at least 4 and 1/3 abilities dedicated to not dying, a rougue has a great matchup against a dragon since with evasion they're at worst taking half damage from its breath, and can use uncanny dodge to take half damage from an attack, add in the a rougue can attack and take the disengage action to let them leave the dragon's attack range on the same turn (as opposed to other classes who have to pick one or the other) and yea... also rogues get sneak attack anytime they have advantage on an attack roll not just when attacking from stealth. So it was definitely more for character reasons rather than a bad match up.

    From the Player’s Handbook on the Way of Shadow tradition for monks: “Monks of the Way of Shadow follow a tradition that values stealth and subterfuge. These monks might be called ninjas or shadowdancers, and they serve as spies and assassins. Sometimes the members of a ninja monastery are family members, forming a clan sworn to secrecy about their arts and missions. Other monasteries are more like thieves’ guilds, hiring out their services to nobles, rich merchants, or anyone else who can pay their fees. Regardless of their methods, the heads of these monasteries expect the unquestioning obedience of their students.”
    And from the Dungeon Master’s Guide, in Flavours of Fantasy, Wuxia: “A ninja is a monk who pursues the Way of Shadow.” The Wuxia section in general might be worth checking out as it has a table of alternate Chinese and Japanese variants for weapons (which, by the way, lists wakizashi (and by extension kodachi) as scimitars, since stat-wise they’re identical to shortswords, except they do slashing damage rather than piercing damage).
    Way of Shadow monks are the official ninja class in D&D, and there is a lot that does support that from a historical point of view. Monks eventually learn to run across water and along walls, and even to become invisible and virtually intangible, and gain a movement speed bonus when wearing no armour, and that’s just in the base class. A Way of Shadow monk additionally learns to cast Minor Illusion, Darkvision, Darkness, Silence and Pass Without Trace at level 3, eventually learning to become invisible in dim light or darkness and teleport between shadows, and at level 18 they can use reactions to make opportunity attacks against enemies being attacked by allies. What’s more, monks use ki to fuel many of their abilities, and use simple weapons, which fits with the idea of ninja being peasants who had to use whatever they had at their disposal, not to mention unarmed strikes and martial arts, and immunity to poison and disease, the ability to end charm or fear effects on themselves, I could go on and on.
    That being said, this is an impressively in-depth character that you’ve clearly put a lot of thought into, and you’ve made as good a ninja as any monk, maybe even better. You’ve definitely convinced me to watch the Unexpectables, so great job! It’s so cool to see a character that you’ve created yourself using all of your knowledge, as well as the process that went into making him.
    I’m thinking of playing a ninja-inspired character, I was thinking a human Way of Shadow monk with the Spy background, since the background feature is all about intel gathering through networks of contacts, and a sickle/kama as his main weapon.
    I would love to see a Yokai Hunters video on D&D oni or ki-rin, and maybe a video on the Samurai fighter archetype, it would be really interesting to watch! Your videos are always amazing and interesting.

    • @nikobennett6841
      @nikobennett6841 4 роки тому +13

      I would also add that a good race would be the surefooted halfing not just because stealth bonus but because halflings are 3 feet tall the second smallest race in the game like the real-life small ninjas, but the most important thing like you said is resourcefulness. and if you keep the rogue you should consider the Scout archetype which really shows the meaning of the word ninja "job of survival" it can use a reaction in combat to run away, has proficiency in survival and Nature, even more, movement speed including swimming and climbing which most characters don't even have, go at Ambushing, and make even more attacks
      In one of my campaigns, my party of me and two others were supposed to fight a Hydra but I came up with the idea of using 6 trees as deadfall traps with a net and then run for 14 hours to find and get the Hydra back to the trap. this trap ended up halving the Hydra's heath and I think allowed us to kill it

    • @alphaxtitania5597

      I believe you should never let flavor text decide how you make or play a character. Take paladins for example, arguably the strictest class there is in terms of role-playing. There is a LOT you can do with a paladin's oaths if you ignore the flavor text and focus specifically on the oath's tenets and even the spells they get. Absolutely nothing in the Oath of Vengeance says you should be an asshole, with the last tenet specifically saying to help and take care of the victims of whoever or whatever you swore vengeance on. And the tenets for the Oath of Ancients have almost nothing to do with protecting nature like the flavor text suggest, but instead revolves around protecting the light in the world, AND they get Moonbeam. You could use this to make a paladin in service to a moon deity, such as Neragen in The Unexpectables. Hell, in my own homebrew campaign I have paladins in service to the goddess of love, swearing the Oath of Ancients to protect the light of love in the world. So maybe Way of Shadow monks are what was INTENDED to be the "ninja class", but I'll take Gaijin's Arcane Trickster any day.

      Honestly, there are a lot of ways to build a ninja-like character in D&D. Thief Rogues get to use items as a bonus action, and have movement and stealth bonuses. Trickster Clerics get all kinds of illusion and enchantment tricks. Rangers, that is all. Archfey Warlocks charm and frighten and teleport and confound. Bards also have plenty of charms and illusions at their disposal, plus Jack of All Trades, and all the skills and tools they need to fit in basically anywhere. Even a Battle Master Fighter with maneuvers like Disarming, Distracting, Evasive Footwork, Feinting, Goading, Trip, etc.

    • @HenshinFanatic
      @HenshinFanatic 4 роки тому +20

      Literally any class can work as some flavour of ninja in 5E thanks largely to backgrounds. Slap the Spy background onto most classes and boom, near-instant ninja. Some classes can even vary on how "realistic" of a ninja they are based on the chosen archetype.
      The only class which needs a heavy dose of reimagining would, IMO, be the Barbarian. Though that's mostly because of them being designed so heavily around STR and CON for their offense and defense respectively. Everything else works quite well to varying degrees of realism.
      Heck, I have builds for how to make certain iconic Nintendo characters such as Mario (Dwarf Way of the Four Elements Monk heavily focused on fire), Link (Variant Human Champion Fighter), and Samus (this one's a more recent build and I haven't decided between Celestial Patron or Hexblade Patron with Pact of the Blade this time going basic Human for the net +6 ability scores), but the hidden joke for those builds is they all have the Heaven's Path Shinobi background (a renamed version of the official Spy background which is itself an official variation of the Criminal background both of which are in the 5E PHB).

    One reason I appreciate the direction Greckles took his build is because lots of people fail to realize that while assassination was the reason ninjas were greatly feared, it was actually a very uncommon job for them, much in the same way snipers and black ops teams are very rarely used for lethal operations in modern times. Instead, they were mostly spies and sabotours. Disguising themselves as common people to eavesdrop on conversations, sneaking into secure locations to copy or falsify documents, and destroying supplies and infrastructure necessary for mobilization.

I wanna give a shout out to tool proficiency as while magic can pull stuff on the fly, some DMs love to pull up smarter characters who can see through illusions. Alchemical Supplies for your Arson needs, Poisoners Kit to create potents of them, Disguise Kit as the Disguise Self Spell is a mere foreign touch away to become useless, Herbalist Kit to create treatments for some wounds, Forgery Kit but that race got you covered, Thieves tools is a given. Thieves' Cant is already given to Rogues to cover the whole secret language thing. You didn't need Illusory Script. Otherwise, pretty well done. I would have picked Prestidigitation instead of Firebolt if you were going full Ninja, as unlike Firebolt Prestidigitation can create lasting fires that have to be put out manually while other spells don't.

    • @RokuroCarisu
      @RokuroCarisu 4 роки тому +23

      I agree that Illusory Script is unnecessary. But while Prestidigitation does have some utility that could be useful for a ninja, I think Firebolt is actually the better choice here. It does indeed ignite flammable objects, at 12 times the distance that Prestidigitation can even, and doubles as a fairly powerful ranged weapon that does not require ammunition, which is also very useful for a Rogue.

      You could use flaming arrowheads for that. Which prestidigitation does help with. If you want to recover the arrow to ensure they don't find the source, just tie a string to it and yank the arrow back to you once it started the fire. Or just use a wooden arrowhead. Hell I would argue a flaming arrowhead would up a shortbow's damage too if you were in combat. While this does make things more complicated, it serves the same purpose. It also means you still get prestidigitation's other effects. For example, the use of dirt "makeup" to change your complection. With prestidigitation, thats just a cast away. If you need to clean up evidence, such as bloodstains, that is also easily doable with prestidigitation. And if you need a big fire fast, and need not worry about distance, with it you can instantly create a campfire.

      @Manek Iridius Not true in my experience. If a GM bans it it's probably because they're trying to play in a specific setting, in which case I doubt Kenku would be allowed either.
      Changelings are also way easier to slot into an existing setting then Kenku, it's very easy to say that they've been around, and are widespread, but haven't had a significant 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 impact on the world. Kenku meanwhile are sentient bird people. Way harder for that to fit into a more grounded, realistic, and/or serious setting.
      This also gets into another problem I have with this choice, IT'S A BIRD PERSON! In most settings that's going to be quite unusual, and way easier for you to escape notoriety. A big hat just isn't gonna cut it.

I quite like the one from 3rd (unpopular opinion though it may be) because it's a way to make a slightly supernatural rogue (Basically they could turn invisible for a short time or run up walls or teleport but were otherwise essentially the rogue class).

    Oh man... this is so very informative. I love it! I had made an Arcane Trickster a little bit ago and a lot of these make me want to re-flavour them a little bit... less about being a ninja, but more about being an effective player. One difference I did was that I took the feats Keen Mind and Ritual Caster (made a variant human). His entire gimmick was going to be able to read spells and copy them into his ritual book at a later date (since Keen Mind lets you recall with perfect memory anything you've seen/heard up to 1 month). Very useful for a Ninja if you think about it... and also an effective way to get new spells, albeit ritual ones. Another feat that makes a lot of sense for a Ninja is Alert. Not being able to be surprised and getting bonuses on initiative would be very useful for a Ninja to enact their plans.
    Also, on a side note... I've used the quail hiding technique before as a kid once. It was at camp while playing manhunt (think team-bases hide and seek) and, not finding a good hiding spot, I hopped into a small field and curled up into a ball, pulling my hoodie over my head and not moving. I continued using this strategy over and over from that point on, because it just kept working. Like, the other team knew the general location I was in... and they STILL couldn't find me! One of them almost stepped on me and they STILL didn't know it was me!

    Well... here’s the thing about Kenku mimicry & forgery. You can mimic & forge anything you hear and see, but that’s it. Kenku don’t have a voice of their own, they can only say what they have heard before, & they can only forge what they have seen. That’s just a part of their curse. So mimicry on the level you’re saying seems fairly difficult to pull off, since it involves mimicry of voice & behavior, & I don’t know if your Kenku character could’ve heard enough of someone’s dialogue to mimic them in every situation.
    Edit: Also another class option for Ninja, albeit possibly less authentic, is Way of the Shadow monk, which was Wizards of the Coast’s attempt at making a ninja class. It’s possibly less authentic, but it still has the whole focus on mobility, the strike hard & fade away thing, & the focus on not getting hit, although you just get evasion as a monk, not Uncanny Dodge

    One thing you should have definitely talked about is backgrounds. They often add something more to your character. Some that would fit very nice with a shinobi character are the Charlatan or the Criminal/Spy

    As a big fan of the Unexpectables, I was SO HAPPY to see that this video got made, made possible by like-minded people who also wanted to learn more about our favorite blue bird shinobi.
    I always watch/listen to the sessions on Takahata101's youtube channel.
    I enjoyed the video very much and appreciate all the hard word you put into making it. I can't wait to watch more of your videos and learn more about your character, Greckles, in future Unexpectables adventures!
    Thank You~!!! ^_^

      Royal 97
      I think that it isn’t ninja-like at all.
      It starts ok, but later levels aren’t focused on utility, but on ephemeral beings for some reason.
      I fill like the rouge or the assassin class are probably better ninjas that the ninja.

    • @royal9743
      @royal9743 4 роки тому +1

      I do like all the focus on climbing and acrobatics of the Ninja since it gives it an own identity, but I agree.
      The best 3.5 Ninja would probably be a Rogue/Wizard/Unseen Seer because of all the focus of espionage through divination and because I'm sure Ninjas would've been adopters of learned magic if there was such a thing in real life. Just because of how they used literally every tool.

      i was about to add that in a comment. there is also the oriental adventure book for 3.5 as well, which has a lot of well.. oriental items and weapons, as well as the ninja spy prestige class, which honestly was ok, but you had to work up to that point first.

    I was hoping for this video for a while; I love The Unexpectables :)
    This also gave me a fair bit of inspiration for a Gloom Stalker ninja I've been brainstorming on for a while; it hadn't really occurred to me to think about tools to pick up. Also, I'll admit this character took a good amount of inspiration from Greckles in the first place, like taking Fog Cloud to use like a smoke bomb, and dipping a level in Arcana Cleric to pick up Firebolt and Minor Illusion as Wisdom-based spells, due to how useful they'd be.
