- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #391
Dates of adventure: 7/22/19 - 7/23-19
Beginning in the 1840s, hundreds of thousands of people undertook the monumental overland journey to the American West -- mostly on foot, or in simple wooden wagons. And they weren't all mountain men or cowboys -- most were average men, women and children, looking for a better life. Say what you will about their motivations, treatment of Native peoples, and impact on the landscape -- these people were HARD CORE! Imagine walking 2,000 miles, dragging all your worldly possessions over deserts, across rivers and over the Rocky Mountains -- all without modern camping gear or GPS! It was rough...but also the adventure of a lifetime. Join me as I drive the entire length of this route, following the footsteps of one of the first wagon trains to undertake this journey: the ill-fated Donner Party. These 84 people left the edge of "civilization" in Independence, Missouri in 1846...and thanks to a series of bad decisions and bad luck, ended up trapped in the Sierra Nevada mountains, infamously resorting to cannibalism to survive the winter. How did it happen? Let's find out!

THANK YOU FOR THE BEST NARRATIVE OF THE DONNER PARTY I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY 73 YEARS.
Academy Award for Best UA-cam Documentary 2020...
I don't normally post - you have done a magnificent job of documenting this portion of American expansion. I appreciate you and your work. THANK YOU!
Bravo Sarah. I learned more from you than any books on read about the Donner party. Fabulous job. You have a gift for telling a story.
I agree. I love her stories....especially this series.
And she's a beautiful woman
You did a beautiful presentation of the Donner party. Thanks for your hard work in presenting this video of history, that we can all learn from.
That was as sympathetic a treatment of the tragic truth as could be imagined!
What an excellent storytelling.
You are something else WH!
Sarah, you have given us a no-holds-barred insight into the way it was.for them. Thank you for the honest un-embellished view in this entire 7 part series.
Ya done good girl.
I'm 59. I grew up in the area. We studied the Donner Party. Believe me, we studied the gross stuff too. Maybe we (my sister too) had good history teachers in the area? Good authors?
I can’t even imagine how helpless they had to feel. I don’t know if they didn’t know how to fish.
Incredible story.......the strength of our ancestors was incredible. Very few of us today would even think of doing something like that. We should be grateful for what they had to sacrifice for their families future.
While I enjoy all of your videos this series was by far my favorite 😊.
I wish you would have shown the picture of Patty Reed when she was 90 years old and holding that little doll. She died at the age of 92 in the 1930's, It's amazing that she lived so long after that terrible journey. Great job on telling the story! blessings to you!
As a former teacher of American History, I enjoyed your history lesson on the Donner Party. Stay Safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this series. I can't help but to think how spoiled we are.
I've thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos. The Donner doc is a masterpiece. Your narrative is compelling and very relatable. Thanks Sarah, excellent work.😀🌹
Great video Sarah!
Fascinating. Driving through the pass on the highway still gives me chills.
Right now, I'm stuck in Idaho. Can't wait to get home to CA in March. Moving to Lake Isabella. Luckily I don't have to walk or ride in an oxen pulled wagon. I was born there. I love California.
There's no place like home. There's no place like home.
Best adventure series on UA-cam! Thank you! And to your sis, too.
A travelogue of the best quality. Sarah, you've really excelled with this series. Well narrated and engaging, i thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
I really liked your production values on the story of the Donner Party. As an Assistant Professor, I admire your desire to tell this story from history and I hope you will continue to explore other moments in history. Take care!
You do have an unique ability to bring a familiar story to life and find details that we have missed! I do so love your style! I throughly enjoy your channel!
You are an incredible storyteller! Great research, wonderfully presented, outstanding production values. Thank you.
Was cute as a child and still has a unique adorability still. Great 7 part documentary Sarah!
Awesome series. Very well presented. Love your personality.
Would love to see more of these type of these tales. Maybe the Lewis & Clark or the Powell expedition.
Randy Burnham I agree I would love her take on Lewis and Clark!
History is being neglected in our schools but is a vital part of decision making. You’ve done us all a service with this lesson. Hope to see more.
"Never take no cutoffs, and hurry along as fast as you can".
Damn right
bill nalder an old indian mantold me an old man told him when he was young dont take shortcuts
This is the Best documentary on UA-cam.👍
I just finished your 7 part series on the Donner party. You have put a lot of time and effort into this production and I am grateful to you for it. More people died from exposure, accident and disease than by attacks by Native Americans. This was a very dangerous undertaking by those who braved the journey. My hat is off to those who were brave enough to venture forth. The Donner Party was almost doomed from the start, getting out of Independence late, to other ill advised decisions.
Great Series. I've always enjoyed American history but this series brings a bit of it to life. Real events. Real people.
Your series was great. I learned a lot and you made it so interesting. Well done ! 🇺🇸
You did a great job of telling the story of the Donner family. These seven episodes had me glued to your videos. Excellent job!
one of the best donner party information series! loved every second!!!! thank you so much for sharing your journey!
Great detailed story. Enjoyed the adventure.
Both my husband and myself really enjoyed all 7 of your vlogs about the Donner Party. We watched all of them in one sitting yesterday. You did an excellent job of researching, presenting and editing the information. Thank you very much! Keep up the good work.
I loved this series. You put forth a huge effort in travel and research to bring this amazing and sad history to life, and for that, many thanks. All these decades later, it remains one of the most gripping, tragic stories of American immigrant travel. I disagree somewhat with your statement that greed was a primary motivating factor. Certainly those who went looking for gold and silver were of the ‘get rich quick’ mentality but many people went courageously simply looking to make a better life for themselves and their families. They worked incredibly hard, suffered much and endured. Bravo Sarah. I hope you next decide to do a series on the Chilkoot Trail mining days.
"Greed" is a relative term, isn't it? When I define someone who has more than I do as "greedy" even as I work to raise my own standard of living, well - seems kind of hypocritical on my part. Here we all are enjoying the entertainment and educational value of this platform, while those who own it are swimming in wealth beyond our wildest dreams, and constantly tightening the purse strings against those who create the content so as to deny payment for the work drives their cash cow.
Well done!! The whole series was just the coolest. Your videos exude spirit and energy not found on so many channels. As an old fart who was jeeping before you were born. I still could never go as many cool places as you have. You make armchair exploring as entertaining as all get out!!
Huell Howser would be proud of you!
Peter McCarthy that’s incredible your correct
THAT'S AMAZING!
...very proud!
Followed the entire series. You have a real knack for story telling! I visited Donner Lake 50 years ago and have fond memories of that vacation. Thank you for rekindling those memories.
Who don't absolutely love this woman!!!
Loved this on the ground recount of the Donner Party story. Thanks so much, Sarah.
Finally got to watch this Donner Party series….utterly awesome job Sarah. Tour Guide/History Teacher extraordinaire!
Good Job. I'm glad you took the time and interest to make this series. I have really enjoyed it.
Wow....just wow...
I love the story... both the beautiful and tragic...
I'm a Filipino and i feel the emigrants' sentiments during that time through your storytelling...
Keep rockin' 'hussy 🤟🤟🤟
Dear Wonderhussy, I have learned more about the Donner Party that I have ever known. Maybe with extensive research, I could have found this out, but your series is outstanding. Not sure if it would stand muster in current primary and secondary schools, I am in your debt with the information you have provided. My sincere appreciation of what you have provided is offered. Your explorations are supreme. A loyal follower. Dr. Bob Elliott
Your series on the Donner Party is superb....your talent to make history compelling is unmatched.
Bravo, W.H. Well done, well done indeed. UA-cam should give you an award to recognize this effort, as well as, a big fat check. Please stay awesome.
You are a great teacher and story teller! Thank you for your insight. It is hard to think that anyone in America still has the fortitude of our forefathers. Keep up the great work.
BRAVO! BRAVO! You made history come alive! The doll at the end was the exclamation point of the entire series. Thank you so much for providing entertaining videos on a piece of American History. I definitely will be watching the entire series again.
Good stuff Sarah, thank you
It's an amazing tale. Only one of many on the migration to the west. When the weather finally broke, one man made it to the town. Then he led the rescue party all the way back into the mountains to save the survivors. Amazing.
Great story telling wonder hussy, loved it, gotta tell us another one.... Blessings.
Cherie Grant Johnson yep we need more
This is an excellent telling of the story! Superbly well done!
Excellent series - with an unintentionally funny moment. You were talking about members of the Donner party consuming the dead while you were being consumed by a mosquito at 7:52.
thanks for doing this, Sarah, you have taught me so much about the American west.
Wow! This gal is a master story teller. She should be making movies in Hollywood!
Dang, girl, you rocked this series! My partner and I could hardly wait for this last episode....but it was worth the wait! You have a gift for storytelling! We learned a lot, and we gained a lot of respect for you and your hard work to produce such a great series.
You have reached a new plateau deserving your own series. Although you are not an astrophysicist you deliver the message as Carl Sagan could. Pure magic factual storytelling
Really enjoyed this story and your unique presentation! Thank you for all of your excellent work ✨
Your 7-part series was sooo good! You did an outstanding job, thank you!! ❤
Sarah, your 7-part series following and documenting the Donner-Reed party trip was AMAZING. I can't imagine what these poor folks experienced. Thanks for taking the time record this.
Learned more from this series than I ever did in school!
I have watched a few documentaries on the Donner Party, but I must say yours has topped them all!! Great Job, Wonderhussy!! I have greatly enjoy this series!!
without a doubt, that was THE BEST series of videos on the Donner Party I've ever seen; especially when you brought up points about the activities of daily living. May sound gross, but those things are a part of everyday life and had to be dealt with.
Well done, and thank you!
Excellent series! Thanks for the history lesson. Great production also! Really enjoyed it.
Wow. This series was better than ANYTHING Huell Howser ever made! Great job Wonderhussy!!

This is the best series I've ever seen on the Donner/Reed party. You've brought the story to life by giving the experience a human face. Good on you, Wonderhussy!
Fantastic series of videos. As a UK resident I'm very unlikely to see any of those places with my own eyes so watching your vids really brought it home to me. One can only imagine nowadays the suffering they went through. Keep up the good work Sara. x

Great job with this series Wonderhussy, keep up the great adventures...
Other youtubers were trying to tell the story of the Donners, but I was already into part 6 of yours and abruptly turned them off so I could hear the rest of your story. Good job and thanks!
She did a wonderful job didn't she? Too bad they don't give her a show on the History Channel.
@@captainfragger6295 you know it!
@@captainfragger6295 Agreed. THIS is an epic history lesson, right here.
Since moving to Reno NV in the winter of 2018 I have been enthralled with this story and all the in and outs of local lore. I have read almost everything I have gotten my hands on about the tragedy and I feel so close to these people, especially Sarah Graves and The Reed Family's plight. It was when I was reading "Ordeal by Hunger" that my Aunt Carol mentioned we are descendants of James Reed. I was taken aback. After all, generations of our family hail from northern California. (Davis, Daly City, Vacaville, Clear Lake, San Jose, Sacramento, Ukiah...etc) Watching your video brought me to tears because its personal hearing about Patty's doll or hearing about Virginia Reed's poor pony "Billy" or the little puppy "Cash" for that matter. There are stories within stories here. I feel honored that I live close enough to drive out to the Memorial on any random day trip every now and then.
This made me cry. ❤
very informative. You do a good job documenting your travels so that others can enjoy .
Thank you for the effort that you put into this Series.... you did a phenomenal job with it.
