I just bought one. 52, riding since '83. Good review, good to hear an experienced rider give a real world perspective. There are so many internet heroes out there it's hard to know who's cool and who's a damn fool. So thanks for a good review. JLong.
Picking my FZ-09 up tomorrow.( Liquid Graphite Edition ) Thank you Uncle guy for your reviews . Made my purchase much easier. Looking forward to more GO-PRO vids from you... Thanks again !
Great review man! I agree with some of the others who say that it's good to hear a review from a very experienced rider who knows his stuff. I'm at 8 years of riding and this is the most fun bike I've owned. And great description of the performance at the end!
People say the EFI Bonneville throttle is "snatchy" so it's in the wrist. I can imagine this beauty is way sweet. I'm on my way to getting one, there is a taller screen now being produced. PS. I'm 67 bee riding 54 years, 40+ bikes 4 continents and I'm looking forward to this. Ride safe.
I love hearing about the new bikes from you old guys (I say with respect lol) 40 years of riding vs my 2 years of riding, for this to be one of your top 5 after 100 bikes speaks volumes more than those motorcycle.com or OnTwoEheels videos... Thanks for sharing your experience!
Excellent down to earth review. Nice job, love the bike. Thanks for putting the throttle and suspension in real-world perspective instead of bashing on it like every other review.
This is probably the most honest a d best review i have seen on this bike!! Ive been considering the FZ-09 but every expert review kills it saying that the suspension and brakes are junk. I needed some fan review and this aas perfect. Thanks buddy.
it is a great bike!!! stock suspension setting is surely a bit soft if you are tall and weight more than 75kg but you can adjust both front and rear suspension to firm it a bit both preload and rebound and it will be a perfect bike!!! i've got 1 and i use it every day for commuting to work and i can tell you i agree with what he says in the vid. it is a great bike! plus for the price... u can't get any bargain more than this one! and yes... no helmet hooks! but u can get one easily...
I couldn't agree with you more! I love my FZ-09 I have the tail tidy and wind screen on mine as well, both excellent mods I believe are a must! Happy and safe riding. Thanks for the videos!
Great review, personally, I've also been biking for 40+ years, just bought a second hand 2014 MT09 and it rates as my favorite by far. Gone through cruisers, hypersports, superbikes, supersports, this new purchase is my best so far :)
Thanks Dion. I'm currently enjoying my "new favorite". I picked up a 2012 Kawasaki ZX-14R. For me - the perfect street bike. That being said, the FZ-09 is absolutely in my top 5. Happy Riding!
Found a smokin' deal on one of these bikes, test rode it, fell in love, picking it up and riding her home in 2 days. :D. Little did I know that I was test riding it in A mode, I found it to be a little snatchy on the first ride but could easily get used to it. Thanks a lot for the reviews you have done as it has really filled in the gaps on things I wouldn't have noticed on a little test ride.
I made a savings account to save for one of these; it's such a great deal! It's great to hear that the suspension isn't as bad as they say it is in the reviews. I'd mainly use it to commute, anyways.
+Street machine Hiya street machine. Im exactly the same mate. I have been looking for a long time and i havn't seen a bad reveiw yet. This one is brilliant and im in contact with my local Yamaha dealer. Ive test riden it and im trying to set up a good deal now
Great review, thank you. I'm glad you mentioned your wife's comfort, as I take passengers frequently and was concerned that it's to small of a plank to put people on. My current YZF600R has a big, comfy seat for rider and passenger. The other things you mentioned - suspension and throttle sensitivity - were on my mind too. I just took one for a test ride and was worried about jerky throttle response, but had no problems. Unbeknownst to me, it was in A-mode too! The suspension seemed fine - I had no complaints there either, although to be honest, my mind was focused on how fast it is and how much I didn't want to crash it! Great bike.
Really nice talk about the bike !! I'm not sure if I would be able to fit on the bike in terms of body mass. I'm 116lbs at 5'10" and believe me when I sit on a 600cc I feel like I'm a 10 year old riding a Harley !!! I've been searching for a naked bike or something NIMBLE AND LIGHT. THANKS A LOT !!!
I ride a Concours 14 but tried the Z09 at a Yamaha test drive with the FJR and the super Tenere. My wife liked the Z09 better. I think we are going to get one of these soon.
Thanks for your reviews, they've been extremely helpful. I would like a little input from you if that's okay? I've been riding larger sized scooters for a couple of years. I plan on stepping up into a mc this year. I'm attracted to the simplicity of the Honda NC700 DCT. But I'm concerned that I'll be bored with it in a few months. I'm clear on counter steering, panic braking and the like from the scooters and a safety class. In this situation do you feel this might be a good choice?
This bike is very light and easy to ride and I don't think you would outgrow it. However it does make a lot of power for someone that isn't used to having much. The Honda will probably be an easier transition from the scooters, but you may find yourself wanting more sooner than later. thanks for the feedback. - Guy
Nice review from another 50 yr old :-). I've had a Vulcan 900 for a few months now as my first bike and want something lighter and more maneuverable so it's between this and the Triumph Street Triple in the spring. One thing I'd like your comment on is the seating position. The FZ-09 is more upright than the Triumph and with a back that always wakes up stiff (but loosens up soon after) how would you comment on that aspect ... any lower back soreness? I'd ride it in B mode at first for sure. I'm 5'7" 170 lbs btw and thx again!.
Hey Lou, Thanks for the feedback. I've been fighting a bad sciatic for over a year. riding this bike actually makes my back feel better. The speed triple is an awesome bike, but I like the motor on this one better.(and the price) Thanks again.
I test rode one when it came out great engine the fuelling was a bit iffy but i thought somebody would come up with an aftermarket fix..the suspension is a bit soft but again it could be sorted..but the thing that put me off buying one was the vibes! through the seat, bars & pegs..think i will be sticking with my street triple which is a better bike
Wow, that's weird. I wonder if there was a problem with the setup on the one you rode because mine is glass smooth. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, Enjoy the Street Triple, It's a great bike.
I put my helmet holder on the frame right in front of the passenger peg mounts on the left side of the bike. it fits real nice right there. but yeah it's weird that the didn't have hooks under the seat. maybe because it's all one piece they thought people would be more annoyed about dealing with the seat vs. not having one built in. probably an engineer's decision....
Hi Riza. It's hard for me to limit myself to 5, I've been lucky to have had some pretty fun bikes. But a few I wish I still had? 1985 Yamaha RZ500 (V4 2-Stroke), 1982 Suzuki 1000 Katana, 2003 Kawasaki ZRX1200, 2006 Suzuki Hayabusa, 1972 Sukuki GT550 (2-Stroke Triple), 1984 Kawasaki KX250
I've been thinking about this bike for awhile now, but can't bear to part with my '06 SV650. Go ahead and push me over the edge and tell me how much better this bike is Uncle Guy...
nategray77 Hi nate. Two words - Motor and Agility - The SV650 is a sweet bike, very fun. Put it on steroids and give it a wider, higher bar, and now you're talking FZ - Happy Riding
Being that you've owned a hayabusa, how does the power feel? Obviously its going to be slower, but my previous bike was a hayabusa and so Im a little reluctant to get a bike with so much less power, but the pricing, the looks, and the general fun nature of this bike definitely has my interest.
karlmalone11 Hey Karl, First, very few bikes pull like a 'Busa. That being said, because of the light weight, lots of torque, great gearing, and riding position. if you roll the throttle to the stop in 2nd. it will come up. fun factor 10.
I had a triumph speed triple with terrible "off on throttle abruptness". I hated it. This bike can't be that bad. Makes me wonder if it is a triple problem. I heard Yamaha has a tune update you can get to help out.
BeingUncleGuy, I am planning to buy one for myself as well but it will have to be my every day bike. Riding to work, and every where. Do you think this is the kind of bike suitable for rough(all round daily) use ? I am currently riding a Virago XV535 which has served me well for over 20 years. the xv535 is a great bike but i just thought that it is high time for me to pamper myself a little bit with something new. I am just not sure if this MT-09 is rough and tough like the Virago xv535. Please advise before i go spend my money. Thanks heaps.
Hey Junior, You didn't say if you have had much riding experience. A great first bike is a Ninja 250-300, a CBR 250, an EX500 kawasaki, or maybe one of the enduros, thanks for the feedback.
Hi Vwaudi, It's not bad at all 2 up. However at 280, you will probably want stiffer springs and shock if you're going to be doing a lot of "Spirited" riding. For commuting, it would probably be just fine. Find a way to test ride one if you can.
Hey this bike looks so nice, but I'm 6'3" and I wonder if there's enough leg room on this bike, I'm a newbie to motorcycles, so I'd really appreciate an expert's opinion such as yours.
I got it from Ian at North County House of Motorcycles for $9,000 otd with the 4 year warranty. Those guys have been great to deal with. If you buy one get with John at Sportbike Suspension Tuning. (619)947-5363. He came to my house and adjusted my suspension for only $40. Also , check out the reviews from Fluxx43. He has a lot of good info on the bike.
BeingUncleGuy John has done work on previous bikes for me when I was chasing an issue. Mostly my daytona 675. I weigh 140lbs so not too worried about the suspension on this bike. Yeah, I def want to pay not a penny over $9k otd. Thank you for your answer.
Would this be a bad beginner bike? Never rode more than a few times when I was young and I had an old 80 with fatboy tires but I really want to get into two wheels.
BeingUncleGuy This is a bit embarrassing but Ive been hitting related links all day and thought I was still on the 07. That's what I was referring to I just didn't realize this was the 09. Since thats out of the way though is that a yes to the 07 being a good beginner bike?
You can tidy up the tail by removing the extension bar... and just refix without the extension under the seat? cheap alternative... cheap as in NO COST.
I'm torn between this and and the 07. I like the looks of the 07 more, not a fan of the gold forks and the placement of the display on the 09, but I'm a bigger guy at 6'4 270 so I'm not sure how well I'll fit on the 07. My local dealer is supposed to call me when they get the only 07 they have put together so I can compare since they do have an 09. To bads it's the ugly ass yellow one.
Im 6'3" and I bought the Fz07, its my first big bike, i come from 200 and 300cc no issue with cramping or anything. The looks of the FZ07 for me is much better than the FZ09. But I can tell you that after a month of ownership, Im taming the bike now. It has a really good, fun and torquey power, more than enough for the city and highway riding. I also love the fact that it has a good old cable throttle and no Ride By Wire electronic non-sense. its a good true, core fun bike. With that said, I do lust the FZ09 power sometimes. However, Im happy because I never had a twin and totally love the sound. So in my life I had a thumper, now a Twin, next year I'll probably get the Fz09 (triple) and in a few years time I wanna get a in line 4. Kind of stepping up everytime. But thats just me. Good luck!
+Lorenzo llamas this is not a good bike to get if youre a new rider... nothing i say will change your mind probably but im just saying its a terrible idea to get 115 hp bike with the torque of a literbike as a beginner.
I appreciate the advice, and will think things over. Growing up racing dirt bikes has given me a respect for motorcycles and their capabilities. Understanding that street bikes are a different beast, i Don't plan on going out on the streets and acting like a jackass.
Lorenzo Llamas Hey Lorenzo, Personally, I Agree with MrTopGunnar. There are a lot of great bikes that are very light and perform well on the street. Honda CBR250 or Kawasaki Ninja 300 are just two examples. That being said, I think if you have some experience in the dirt, this might be an OK bike for you to start on. It's very light and easy to control (especially in B Mode). But you still have to respect the 100+ horsepower. No matter what bike you choose, I HIGHLY recommend taking a rider safety course. It will take years off of your learning curve, and help avoid developing bad habits. So, Welcome to the street riding community!
BeingUncleGuy I couldn't agree more, that 100+ HP is no joke. I'm currently enrolled to start my safety course next month and then I'll be signing up for the level after that when finished. As for the bike, I'll have to do some hard thinking on it, She's a beauty. And thanks for the welcoming, I'm out of Vista, so I'm sure I'll see you around. Cheers!
November11Seven I you have not done so, do not purchase this bike. You said you are a newbie. Don't start with this bike. Get the FZ07, Kawazaki Ninja 6 or Suzuki SV600. If you are new, you really want to be careful..
+George Beckhart my first bike was an r1. its not up to you to determine what someone can and cant handle. people should buy whatever they are comfortable on.
I just bought one. 52, riding since '83. Good review, good to hear an experienced rider give a real world perspective. There are so many internet heroes out there it's hard to know who's cool and who's a damn fool. So thanks for a good review. JLong.
+Jonathan Long Thanks Jonathan, Ride on
Jonathan Long o
I am so glad to hear a review from an over 50 guy. I am 48, and plan on getting one of these in February, and will be 49 when I get mine
Thanks Scott, You will Love it. I like this bike better every time I ride it.
Picking my FZ-09 up tomorrow.( Liquid Graphite Edition ) Thank you Uncle guy for your reviews . Made my purchase much easier. Looking forward to more GO-PRO vids from you... Thanks again !

Hey i took your words for it and bought one, last one in Mass!!!
So stoked im picking it up tomorrow!!
Thanks
Congrats Freddy! You're going to love it.
I couldn't agree with you more! I love my FZ-09 I have the tail tidy and wind screen on mine as well, both excellent mods I believe are a must! Happy and safe riding. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks Shayne
Congrats on your new bike. I love mine, for sure.
Thanks

Thanks Totes, Enjoy
What was the price out the door?
My vstar is going away and this is taking its place.. Gonna turn 50 in September and can't wait!
Great video. Thanks for talking about the gearing.
I made a savings account to save for one of these; it's such a great deal! It's great to hear that the suspension isn't as bad as they say it is in the reviews. I'd mainly use it to commute, anyways.
Overall amazing review sir! Definitely one of the best. Especially considering you kept it mostly stock overall
Ro Ru Thanks Ro
Thank you for the good review. Been interested in this bike for a while now, an now im just more convinced to get one.
+Street machine Hiya street machine. Im exactly the same mate. I have been looking for a long time and i havn't seen a bad reveiw yet. This one is brilliant and im in contact with my local Yamaha dealer. Ive test riden it and im trying to set up a good deal now

Great bike.
Thanks Chris,
I have an FJ09 , the touring version and love it. I agree with you, Flux 43 does excellent reviews.
thank you this review is really valuable to me. really good information
thank you for the review and the shared experience! ;)
This video made my decision to buy this bike. Thnx a lot (got exact bike last week)
Just bought one in Rapid Red!!! Thursday morning cannot come soon enough!!! Awesome videos by the way
I agree, this is a great bike
The most positive review about the FZ-09 I've heard haha
thank you
Please keep the videos coming. I am seriously considering this as my next bike.
Nice Bike. I almost bought one but my dealer had a really good deal on a new R1 that I couldn't pass up. Great looking bike.
Great review man !!!!
I ride a Concours 14 but tried the Z09 at a Yamaha test drive with the FJR and the super Tenere. My wife liked the Z09 better. I think we are going to get one of these soon.
Good one, thanks for sharing...
Thank You
Thinkin might get me one of these
Thanks for your reviews, they've been extremely helpful.
Thanks UncleGuy, at 46 I was wondering if it sit to far forward. Where did you find that helmet hook?
I test rode one when it came out great engine the fuelling was a bit iffy but i thought somebody would come up with an aftermarket fix..the suspension is a bit soft but again it could be sorted..but the thing that put me off buying one was the vibes! through the seat, bars & pegs..think i will be sticking with my street triple which is a better bike
Wow, that's weird. I wonder if there was a problem with the setup on the one you rode because mine is glass smooth. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, Enjoy the Street Triple, It's a great bike.
I feel i need to try another just to see if had a slighty duff one
Hey UNC Super review Brother would you suggest this bike for a first time rider ?
I think the FZ-07 might be a better choice if you haven't ridden much. $1200 cheaper too.
Have you seen the MV Augusta brutale ??? Do you think that's a smallest bike when it comes to 600cc engines ? Thanks a lot hehe
Can you list of your other top 5 bikes? Good review btw! TY
100k views and 500 subs hahaha, very interesting. Goodluck my friend:p
I have a keen interest in the 2015 touring version
I just saw it today. It looks like a pretty cool bike.

You guys should check out the 2014 Yamaha FZ-07. Awesome little bike.
I think that will be a great beginner bike
I had a triumph speed triple with terrible "off on throttle abruptness". I hated it. This bike can't be that bad. Makes me wonder if it is a triple problem. I heard Yamaha has a tune update you can get to help out.
how tall are you? not many people talk about rider height and that is super important.
I think you'll love it. It's a great everyday ride. Much more fun than the Virago
Thanks mate. fun is for sure with that kind of torque and horse power. I hope that it is as robust as the Virago. and trouble free.
Hey, im really looking in to getting a motorcycle for the first time , you think this bike will be a good start bike , if not what would ? thanks
Hey Junior, You didn't say if you have had much riding experience. A great first bike is a Ninja 250-300, a CBR 250, an EX500 kawasaki, or maybe one of the enduros, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for replying UNC the FZ will be my choice
How does it ride 2 up? I'm at about 280 (and dropping!) and wondering if the stock suspension could be dialed in to my weight.
Hi Vwaudi, It's not bad at all 2 up. However at 280, you will probably want stiffer springs and shock if you're going to be doing a lot of "Spirited" riding. For commuting, it would probably be just fine. Find a way to test ride one if you can.
Awesome man, how tall are you and are you able to have both feet flat?
Hi Elger, I'm 5'10" with a 30" inseam and yes I can put both feet down flat.
Can you post a link to the accessories you've order? Mainly the tidy tail, please.
Hi Titan, I got the tidy tail from Jesterstrickbits.com in the UK. The flyscreen came from Yamaha and the pipe came from superbiketrackgear.com
awesome. thanks!
Hey would you go for a marked down.new fz8 over an fz09? It's over 1k cheaper
I personally wouldn't, I think the 09 is worth the extra $$$
selling my R6 and getting one soon!!! cant wait
I love it i have one is 31.000 is a ROCKSTAR!☺️😉
Hey this bike looks so nice, but I'm 6'3" and I wonder if there's enough leg room on this bike, I'm a newbie to motorcycles, so I'd really appreciate an expert's opinion such as yours.
Thanks Izzat, The bike is pretty roomy. You'll just have to sit on one and see if it fits.
what was your OTD price if you don't mind? i'm in SD as well and looking to buy

William Kane Absolutly
I'm curious as to the suspension upgrade you did. Thanks
I haven't done any yet. I'm waiting for Ohlins to come out with something
Oh. I thought you mentioned something about an internal upgrade
You can tidy up the tail by removing the extension bar... and just refix without the extension under the seat? cheap alternative... cheap as in NO COST.
guhhhh all that stockness
He only had 500 miles on it. Give him a break
Is there seriously no ABS?
You don't have the only bike with an abrupt on/off throttle. Honda CBR600RRs are notorious for that.
lol, thanks
I'm prob gonna buy one in a week.
You'll love it :)
I'm m 5'10 260 pounds am I too big for the bike
You might find the suspension a little soft. I recommend a test drive.
this bike looks really nice i want one but i never rode a bike before
Thanks, A good way to get started riding is with a dirt bike or a small enduro. I also highly recommend taking a motorcycle rider safety course.
Thats a CH-46 flying by. HMMMMMMMMM!
Should have bought a MV Augusta Brutale 800RR
oh no you forgot to cover up your license plate like EVERYONE else does lol just joking
With that said,
I do lust the FZ09 power sometimes.
Cheers!
I'm in Carlsbad and work in San Marcos. We'll have to go for a ride for sure.
BeingUncleGuy sounds good, I work in San Marcos as well.
