  • The Yamaha FZ-09 seems to be THE hot bike of the year-and for good reason. It's an affordable triple cylinder at $7,990 that represents a great value with ride by chip technology and three riding modes. Warning: this bike has aggressive throttle characteristics especially in the "A" mode--aggressive meaning the front tire is prone to come up. The riding modes are reviewed in detail in the video as are the general riding characteristics of the bike. The video includes helmet cam, well recorded engine sound, still shots and other video shots to give a tons of looks on and off the bike.
Moto Apex rates the bike 4.7 out of 5.0 points in consideration of the bike for newer riders. If it were not for the more predictable B mode (CIty), it would be hard to recommend the bike for a new rider given the tendency in A mode or Standard to get front well lift. The primary point reduction was for non-ABS brakes, which is just standard to moto apex scoring. The brakes are fine and not a key purchase consideration. The positive considerations are narrow seat combined with narrow tank to help get feet on the ground for shorter riders (32.1" seat height) and for a good "tucked in/balanced" riding position. Controls are standard, but the instrumentation panel is viewed as very good given all the information shown including gear position.
Word among some is that the back end is soft, which moto apex does not consider a key issue for most riders especially knowing that the stock shock could be upgraded to an Ohlins for a "R" street bike set-up.
With 105+ bhp @ 10200 , 847cc, i-c inline triple, EFI ride by chip, three ride modes,, six speed transmission, 61.3 bhp b-ft measured torque, 417 wet weight, and a lot more, we think the FZ-09 is a motorcycle you have to consider at the price.
The revised version of the Yamaha FZ-09 review by Moto Apex offers a little more information regarding the potential for having the FZ-09 modified to an "R" version by the dealer. For example, to achieve an R configuarion Atlanta Motor World (a supporting dealer) would upgrade fork internals, replace the rubber lines (brake lines) with stainless steel braided lines, use a radial master cylinder and an Ohlins shock. We think this topic is worth emphasis in this revised video because these upgrades address the points raised by very experienced riders in their reviews of FZ-09. While we think many riders will be pleased with the bike in the stock configuration, a $7,990 price certainly allows for future upgrades.
Please visit Sean at Atlanta Motor World in Atlanta if you are in the area and PLEASE mention moto apex. AMW is a Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Ducati dealership.

Are you planning on adding on any accessorizes expect a exhaust?? I am currently saving up and getting ready to sell my 2007 Yamaha R6S so I am hoping I can save up about $6,000 and then buy a used one that only has like a few hundred miles on it!!

The indicator that never ends XD Happens to all of us.
This bike is awesome, the throttle control was an issue right when i got the bike but i've gotten very used to it. I can now ride around in A mode pretty smoothly in the higher revs. Around town STD mode is best suited.

That's cool that Atlanta Motor World offers a R version with a Ohlins rear shock.Steel braided brake lines.A better master brake cylinder in front. And the better fork internals.I would pay the extra for those upgrades but there are no dealers in my area offering this setup out the door like what Atlanta Motor Sports are doing.Thankyou Moto Apex for the good review.

Solid practical review. Rubber vs SS brake lines even my 250cc scooter has SS, but other reviewers saying they could "feel" a difference is stupid.

Triumph tried it but Yamaha did it. It will be years before this bike is equaled.

I have a 2014 FZ09. I rode it about 4,000 miles in a few months and my only complaint with this bike is the suspension and clutch chattering in neutral. The suspension is horrible if you ride corners fast or have a passenger on the back. It likes to buck back and forth a few times after bumps and bucks in corners if you going fast. The clutch chatters and makes a lot of noise in neutral and it drives me nuts. Other than that it’s been an amazing bike. I would recommend it to any experienced rider.

You forgot to mention one VERY important point (a point that's a deal-breaker to me). The gas tank is only 3.7 US Gal compared to the standard 4.5. This means riding less miles before having to fill up and will quickly become annoying. This also means the bike is geared more towards city riding/commutes - large distances are not as easily covered for anyone who wants to do something like driving across states.
Anyway, if not for the smaller tank, I'd have already bought this bike. Alas, I think I'll go with either Daytona 675R or Speed Triple instead

Givi will make a windscreen, the bike is going to be popular. The Givi on my FZ8 makes wind blast about 40% more bearable at 70-80mph. I'll wait another year.
Yamaha needs to boost the price a 1000 bucks and fix the squirrely shit. I wonder if you can even apply the power on the FZ09, it seems to wheelie too easily. Great for fun but not great for speed. It might be interesting when I meet one of these on the street.

Generally a good review. However, make no doubt about it -- this thing is a wheelie monster even in "standard mode". You can wheelie (with no clutching!) by just rolling on the throttle in standard mode in the first two gears. BTDT. It will wheelie with nothing other than a quick (and not that big) twist of the wrist. No clutch-fanning required. I also think the reviewer was WAY too generous about the front suspension. I also don't know why the difference between the "standard" and "B" mode is subtle. NOT AT ALL! B is soft, Standard is NOT! As for suspension, this bike hobby horses badly, just from throttle on and off. Front end feels undersprung and underdamped in corners. The throttle fix is NOT easy -- you can't just chip it because the FZ09 actually has an injector cut-off on roll-off -- something very radical. I found it difficult just to maintain steady state speed on a highway. This is a serious problem that Yamaha needs to correct. But if you like to wheelie, this is the machine. The motor is great, truly great. Re Seat height -- I am 6'1"and I wanted at taller seat. I do agree that the brakes are fine, and I would like to see ABS.

Can anyone tell me if this would be a good bike to start off with or should I get a car

    • @ylism
      @ylism 10 років тому

If you haven't rode bikes for a good while, either get a smaller bike, or get the car, would be my first thoughts ! ! !
It's not so easy as many people think, in regard to riding a bike, and to be riding safe doing so, with so many things to consider, you must have your full attention at times, all the task at hand, and it will be a task, until you have proper experience, in the art of riding defensively riding.
That means knowing what the car is going to do, by the way it's tires are angled, and if moving, people will swear on a stack of bibles, they do not see you, even after waving at you, then pulling out in front of you, or what look like a wave to you ?
This bike has serious power, and should be treated like such, that is loaded, and ready to go off, fact is this bike will leave many 600cc SS bikes in it's wake, with a good rider !
Now city riding can be, a nightmare, if the person behind you thinks you're a car at a stoplight, just because the bike so narrow, and distracted people like to be, a every growing list, things such as cell phones & lipstick applying ect, may just get ramed you in the rear, making a really bad day for you, or worse.
Am I trying to scare you, yes & no, just some facts of riding these days, with cars and people multitasking when they should be driving the car, or truck they occupy, I think you know what I am saying.
Then there is you wanting to have fun, on a bike with over 105 RWHP, or at the rear wheels HP, that only weighs 414 lbs, or less ? as the fuel is being burnt off.
Yes It's great to live in a country where they don't limit the bike you can buy, for your madin ride, say like many other countries do. Yippy who.........
But it takes loads of self control to be ok, or just lucky, or it's just not your time yet, to meet your maker ?
That is something to think about, or not, seeing that is your choice, like buying this rocket ship on two wheels.
Plus you have insurance cost, depending on your age, it can be very high & another good thing, is taking the MSF course to help get your motorcycle endorsement, then there is the needed gear, if you care about the body you inhabit.
On the other hand riding a motorcycle, is one of the best experiences period, a person can do that is legal, it's better than drugs, and way more fun & relaxing when done right, and a skill to build upon, it's been compared with flying, and I would say it's true in certain ways, also cheaper, but the same types of dangers do exists, plus come the reasonability of riding.
Being a good, or bad rider, is totally up to the individual, each person has a learning ability, some are faster than others, what type of person are you, and here is a place to be honest with yourself, after all the real you will shine through.
Thats my long winded / or typed 2 cents. May the best thing happen for you & others, yl

moto apex on UA-cam I think that to really appreciate how a bike sounds, you really have to be there in person. recording the sound and playing it back takes away from the sound. You did a great job reviewing the bike. I enjoyed watching this video
