    Pre-germinating KBG is a game changer. I've done two KBG reno's, the first one no pre-germination. It took 11 days to see any tiny seedlings popping out, and ~22 days to see sparse faint patches of green seedlings. The LONGEST 3-4 weeks of my life. My 2nd KBG reno I tried pre-germinating the seed for 5 days and let it dry out for another 12 hours. I had little tiny seedlings in 3 days and the same faint green patches in 8-10 days. On day 14-15 I had very bad thunderstorms with heavy rain come through. The seedlings held on and filled in just fine. Pre-germination totally saved my ass. It just works and it tremendously cuts down on watering or any fck ups.

    Our back and side yards have been quite a challenge. We hired a landscaper to seed our yard and while we’ve had some germination our grass is being dominated by weeds and crab grass. On top of that with our home being a new build we found early on that the final grade in our back yard was not done correctly leading to pooling in several spots. All of those spots never germinated.

    • @titosrevenger

      @@titosrevenger Elite cultivars of KBG can germinate much more quickly ... I had mine come up (without any pre-germination) in about a week and a half using Midnight, Mazama, and Bewitched.
      EDIT: Btw that was in the spring, when the soil was still relatively cold. Would be even faster in the summer/fall when soil temps are still above 60 consistently.

    • @JeffSmith-eq3kc
      @JeffSmith-eq3kc 2 роки тому

      @@titosrevenger It really didn't save much time. 4-5 weeks is an extremely slow germination even for kbg. In prime conditions like he has you should see germination at 20 days or so. By 5 weeks you should have a stand of turf.

    I've had mixed results applying RGS at seeding. If conditions aren't right, the heavily organic content of RGS soaks into the seed and make it prone to rotting, mildew, mold, fungus, etc... Not sure if the pre-soaking of the seed will make this worse. Good Luck

    Good job with the lawn, do you reduce your nitrogen usage when you apply humic acid? I've seen plenty of studies that say that humic, sea k, etc. are only really beneficial at reduced fertilizer rates and don't show much if any benefit at normal/proper fertilizer rates. I imagine they wouldn't be very beneficial then when applying excessive nitrogen for the fall nitrogen blitz.

      As a golf course superintendent I am curious if it will germinate. I've never heard of simply leaving seed submerged in water for days as a way to speed up germination. We wouldn't completely submerge the seed but keep it's moist in something that drains excess. Consistently keeping it moist compared to submerging it.

      @@JeffSmith-eq3kc it works. I've been seeing a few people on UA-cam soaking it for a few days or however long and then doing the overseed and their lawns came out fine, like Conor's here. I've seen another video which states that you do an extended soaking in which you keep the seed submerged in water for the first 24 hours only. After that, you drain the seed and let it sit to dry for 12 hours and then resoak the seed and immediately drain it again repeating this process over the next number of days. That's the method I tried and here are my own observations. This method allows for the seed to be moist at all times while not being excessively wet. This is wanted because the seed can be ready to get put down at any moment and you don't want that seed to be excessively wet when you're mixing it in with whatever spreading medium you'll be using. It won't mix as well leaving you with a not so uniform overseed. However, you have to keep an eye on the seed. More specifically moving the seed around and looking into the center of the seed pile to see if the seed has JUST started to sprout its roots. You don't want them to be very far along. Just the very very beginning stage of the roots poking out (white fuzzy things poking out of the seeds.) Do not half ass and judge by the seed on the outside of the bag or whatever you're using because that seed on the ouside is going to dry out faster than the seed in the center. The seed towards the center will develop faster because it will be kept moist with the protection from the seed on the outside. Now with that said, I made the mistake of half assing and judging the seed germination based on looking at the seed on the outside. So by the time I realized I should've been smarter and looking at the seed I'm the center, it was already well passed that beginning fuzzy stay. I had roots that look like they were already maybe a centimeter long. I was devastated! But I put the seed down anyway in hopes that it would still survive. Good news is, I'm still seeing a lot of baby grass come up. I'm only on my 3rd week, so I'm really crossing my fingers it all survives. I overseeded a mix of tttf and kbg.
