The guy on the left had taken 4 strokes before Phelps broke out on his 5th stroke. If you watch closely you can see how Phelps would purposefully push off the wall slightly downward compared to his opponents and use his dolphin to be faster than their freestyle - and it was, of course, as it's the fastest stroke of them all, but not everyone has the conditioning to be able to stay underwater that long at top speed without it costing them too much energy/oxygen.
Water is ~800x more dense than air. Swimming is a really good workout, but it does take some getting used to-and some minimum amount of muscles to build up, certainly some bit of technique to help make it easier, and then breathing conditioning then helps, too. But, I am always amazed at my local pool, which has ~20 lanes, the variety of ages, body types, and ability levels of people who enjoy swimming.

From 2008 to 2017 it has been such an amazing and wonderful rivalry between 2 of the greatest free style swimming teams in history : the USA and France !!! Now that the french team is not as strong since the end of the golden generation (Bousquet, Gilot, Bernard, Agnel, Manaudou, Stravius...) I wonder which team will be able to replace France as the USA main challenger. Thank you so much to all these extraordinary and wonderful swimmers from both team who gave us so much pleasure over this past decade.
It looks like it’s mostly Australia now. I liked France because they were more home trained - many Aussie swimmers still train NCAA. If you train in America then beat America, it kind of cheapens it.
Strength and conditioning-including breathing ability-matter, too… Plus, it doesn’t hurt if your upper torso, hands, and feet are proportionally bigger than average! (See the skills an’ Talents video “short vs talk swimmers” ua-cam.com/video/DhSLLivL3g4/v-deo.htmlsi=6b824jyDML_QT5Qm)

@@ryanfish1320 Ehh he's likely much bigger than you. And obviously he's fast as hell. These things are all important, and it makes the biggest difference at the highest level. Also, often times swimming in a straight line is more important. Keep swimming mindfully!
@@emremladic4486 When a swimmer goes through the water, they create bubbles in the water, this makes it easier for the swimmer behind to move through the water since bubbly water is less dense and provides less resistance. This is what I think anyways correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
I’ve always been fascinated by how much longer Michael Phelps stays under the water on both his start and turns. It’s fascinating because no one else seems to duplicate it really and it’s bizarre because he’s under the water for much longer only kicking while his competitors are already up kicking and pulling yet he is somehow going faster nearly every time. He also seems to go deeper under the water than everyone else. Any thoughts on this?
I am not a top swimmer who goes to meets but a. It's technically difficult to do in a way that it makes you faster than just starting to pull, b. it puts a lot of stress on the lungs that might weaken the rest of your race and c. you are only allowed to swim for 15m underwater and most want to play it safe.
under the water you have less drag than on the surface and your normal swimming muscles can rest a few moments longer. by diving deep he avoids the troubled water that moves towards him at the surface which is his own vortex from the previous lap.
For a man of his size he has relatively short legs. So he can get a massive push off. Very much in the same way that a man with shorter legs will be able to deadlift more efficiently than one with long legs.
@@Zac-bv8km no, Stravius’ turn was good but not excellent, the goal is to go faster underwater, but it was clearly that his dolphin kicks were still slightly slower than either Phelps’ or Dressel’s.
Go back and watch the Beijing Olympics. Phelps led off the relay, 7th at the turn, after blasting those underwater dolphin kicks, he surfaced being 2nd, only slightly behind Eamon Sullivan.
@@yibambe4ever74 so I'll give you an explanation. French guy dolphin underwater was basically as fast and as impressive as Phelps's one. The difference is not that others cannot go dolphin mode fo 15 meters faster than normal freestyle. They all do. Underwater dolhin after the turn is naturally faster than normal freestyle. But it is very energy consuming as well. This is why you'll never see an 800 meters swimmers do a long underwater. Not because they can't do it, but because they must save energy. Interestingly enough same applies to 100 and 200m. The French guy "died" last 15 meters. He was out of breath and his arms wouldn't move. He basically lacked oxygen because his underwater took too much of that. That's the difference woth Phelps - he is the only swimmer who can maintain his speed till the end or even speed up after doing crazy dolphin after the turn. That's the reason Phelps was never super great at 50m - everyone does long and powerful underwater on 50m, because they have enough energy to sustain the top speed till the end. 100m is different though. You swim you first 50, you turn, you dolphin, you speed up and out of a sudden you're dying without breath and your arms or legs are made of wood rather than muscles.
Shoutout to the camera guy who can swim just as fast underwater and upside down
Hahahaha this comment made my day
Not to mention, while holding his breath
True! And when they turn he even stops to wait for them down at the bottom of the pool without going up for air at all. Incredible guy.
