  • The Valve steam deck is the latest, highest performance handheld ever. Here's my take on it, and whether I think it's worth saving up your hard earned cash for.
I've been waiting to review the Valve Steam Deck for a while now, and now that they're actually available to order, I thought this was the perfect time to give it the look in!

Good review but I strongly recommend anyone who has a steam deck to download the decky loader and install 2 things using it. 1 I think it's called vibrant deck...anyway it lets you adjust your screen saturation and it makes games look much better. Honestly just increasing the saturation 50% and it's comparable to an OLED screen. And 2 is cryo utilities. It optimizes your swap file size and improves fps up to 25%(depending on the game) and should improve the life of your sd and SSD (since it's not writing to them as often)

I was a little hesitant after being really let down by their previous hardware (okay, the Steam Controller mainly) but I was so wrong. This thing is a total game changer for me. I've had very little friction (aside from one small emulator issue) and it's mostly runned flawlessly. A PS2 in the hands...not to mention everything else it does. And to boot, I love that Valve is totally cool with everyone using it how they please! They're not trying to force a Steam interface, restrict GoG or Epic access...just all around a slam dunk with this thing.

@@burger-enjoyer since i mostly played on pc, i had to add extra buttons to my controller scheme. so i set up the track pads (mostly left one) as utility buttons (maps, inventory, settings, etc) instead of the back buttons. the back buttons work well for quick inputs like jump, crouch, select spells/weapons, quick melee and basically anything that needs a fast input while using the joysticks or main buttons. also good for activating mode shifts, and lastly, fast forward and "menu" on all emulators.

To be honest Steam Sales aren't the same hot stuff they used to be for a few years now. I mean sure it's still great compared to consoles but on PC we've seen better. Thankfully there are a lot of 3rd party storefronts and bundle deals available. I mean I sure as hell I'm getting more value out of my Humble Choice subscription and some GreenManGaming/Fanatical deals than the Steam itself as far as acquiring games goes. It's nowadays quite rare that Steam offers actually best deals out there.

    I got the 64GB version with a samsung microSD card+anker USB-C dock.
I looked at tons of vids of people talking about the deck's SSD vs micro SD card and I can verify the load times are solid; just make sure you don't be a div and move the shaders to the micro SD card, it makes games run worse and is not worth it.
If you need to expand the Deck's SSD specifically, there's cheap options online; I've seen the 256GB SSD that matches the deck's size go for $37.
I got an Anker USB-C dock and at 1080p it supports 60HZ, it's worked perfectly fine and since it was used "like new" on amazon, from Anker themselves it was only $22.
So, sure if you want to save yourself the headache you can get the 256GB Deck but it's such a price hike IDK if I recommend it vs the other options. Yes when you say microSD vs SSD you'd think way faster speeds, but if you get a decent microSD card...The difference is 2-7 seconds in Elden Ring. Which isn't much, honestly.
Standby mode works perfectly and I've had little issue other than going in standby mode in Elden Ring and booting it up and getting "kicking you from game, you're offline- clearly" which there's ways to avoid, honestly

also there some flaws that not to breaking like it disconnect to steam server if you left on sleep for long time.. it will need reset when that happens.. hopefully they just keep patching it for improvements rather than selling another steamdeck 2 in the next 2 years as the price was very expensive for portable console.

Price wise, it is the same cost, but my friend is encouraging me to separate my gaming from work device -> his mind switched and he is able to focus more when working on laptop. So personally I've been in this realm. I work a 9-5 in finance from home and originally through covid convinced myself I needed two setups to separate work from play. It was good at the time but the ball ache of swapping just got tedious and I wanted a cleaner setup overall. They're both sensible options and I'm sure both would work. It really just depends on what type of gaming you're looking to do I guess? The deck is slightly limited of course, so for the same cash, if you can mentally separate them, the laptop might be the bet!

@@Sr2Media Thank you for your take in this. I suppose it really depends on personal preference. When I was young I had a computer, but then I went to college and bought my first gaming laptop. It was fine at the time, but now I am at my PhD and my second gaming laptop is still fine (i5 8300, GTX1060, 16Gb, 2xSSDs...). Unfortunately, I really need to work on the fly and a 3kg and 2h battery just will not make it. So, I want to upgrade to a thin portable laptop and still would like to game from time to time. With the new APUs (thanks AMD 🙂) it is possible. As I am tech enthusiast I really would like to go and buy a Steam Deck (portable, Linux based, to support Valve), but also do not want to waste on two separate devices and I am back at my conundrum 😀

To me it’s changed the way I game I’ve always preferred handhelds but remember it’s a pc to make the most of it be prepared to tweak, I would recommend getting the 256gb and duel booting windows for added compatibility for games and mods and remember as good as the apu is its an apu not dedicated graphics 4K modern aaa gameplay isn’t really an option that sed the screen is decent and 720p looks great on the screen …. Be prepared to invest in a battery pack and a a2 rated sd card if you like hand held gaming this is goat 1gen emulation to modern aaa it’s all possible

Its a great device, but the color gamut in the screen is a huge bummer. 68% sRGB is noticeably washed out, especially when you have other devices that use OLED, which is common in run of the mill budget phones now. The Ayaneo 2 has 135% sRGB and it's said by many reviewers that it looks so good, it's like having an OLED display, but it costs so much more than a Deck. I love everything about the Steam Deck except it's screen.

@@Sr2Media Yeah, the screen isn't a huge issue once you're immersed in a game. To me it boils down to:
Steam Deck Screen: Not that impressive, but serviceable, and fades into the background of your mind once you're engaged with something.
Switch OLED Screen: From start to finish, I'm constantly aware and in awe of how rich and amazing the colors are, and I wish I was exaggerating.
The Decks screen isn't a dealbreaker by any means, but people like me who are spoiled by OLED really see the difference hard.

    Here's a fact of life.
if you're a grown person and you have to SAVE to get a $500 gaming device you probably have more important things to do with your money than spend it on gaming.
Not diminishing the value of the steam deck (cuz I own one) or trying to come off as an elitist BUT If it's going to take you a long time to "save up" the $500 for a steam deck (like say over multiple months) you should probably get your money up while you wait for a steam deck 2.

@@Sr2Media it's a great device and I get the premise you were trying to go for. But what alot of people who see the steam deck don't understand is that it's not a "console" in the traditional sense and it's not made to appeal to the masses, it's for a niche market of PC gamers who like to take their PC games with them anywhere
Alot of people get it, get turned off because "they can't bother tinker with it" and leave crappy reviews on the device. Granted the steam deck is in no way a perfect device, it's got it's flaws. So if it's a case where people are interested but have to "save up" cuz they're strapped for cash they should probably sort out their financial situation first and just get a steam deck 2 while they wait. that's all I'm saying.

Like you would for a full gaming setup, entertainment center or even for a car. But like I said, it's all about context. Thanks for understanding!

The same 3rd party game available on the Steam Deck is also available on the Switch with a tiny bit of less performance, the trade off is you can play those games for 6-8 hours on the Switch where the Steam Deck will die in less than an hour.

I get between 2 and 6 hours out of my switch lite, and between 2 and 5 out of my aging 1st generation switch. and I get on average the same out of my steam deck. That is to say, about 4 hours. On the switch if I play a lightweight game, I'll get closer to the 5-6 hours, but rarely ever surpass that top end of battery life. Because the switch doesn't let me limit its performance to lower power consumption. On the Stean Deck side, I can change the settings of my game, and then on top of that, setup a performance profile for that game in SteamOS that makes it absolutely sip battery or change the settings and make a profile to make it chug power from the battery like a beast. I have those options. The battery life on the steam deck is advertised at 2 to 8 hours. With some games, the right settings and profile setup you can regularly beat 8 hours. Flexibility is the steam decks biggest selling point.
That doesn't make the switch bad, and no one is calling the switch bad. But current games from 3rd party studios, are really having a hard time fitting within the limitations of the switch. While nintendo first party titles are ever impressive as they are built within those limitations and use them as a guide informing game design. Other developers are porting to the switch to expand the number of platforms they can reach sales on. The oled switch I feel works against itself as well, as it does get a bigger screen if only by a little, and that makes it, while far more vibrant, less clear looking than the smaller switch and switch lite screens that look a little sharper just by having a higher pixel density. (i prefer my switch lite over my 1st gen switch exactly because of this, even if it makes text harder to read)
Nintendo has always since the beginning used older technology in interesting and new ways, to more cost effectively make interesting and in most cases popular products that sell well. The WiiU being their only major failure, and the 3ds being one of the few exceptions at the time, as the hardware was surprisingly advanced compared to what they usually do with their handhelds. (the 3ds is capable of tessalation, or geoshading, a graphical trick that gives otherwise simple looking geometry a more polished and textured look. and that was a fairly new graphics technology at the time, and made it rather impressive as a handheld.) The switch is the same in this reguard, the tegra x chip was already a few years old when they released the switch, and now is considerably aged, and lacks some of the features of modern graphics processors. It's just not as capable, but its sill an impressive little gaming handheld in its own right.
TLDR; Spoiler, the deck has just as good if not better battery life than the switch if you spend a little time to set it up.
