- It has been a while since I made my Hobbit / Lord of the Rings Aquascape, complete with my own DIY aquarium decorations that I MADE 100%! Projects are not without hangups and failures though, and I'm sharing mot only how I made my decorations, but the ways they failed.

You should make a regular terrarium out of the old decorations! That way you can use them but they won't be submerged in water!
This hobbit house work you did is fantastic! You can now use it in a fairy garden - the cracks make it look more real! 💕

I was just about to try resin. I appreciated this video so much that I watched the ads all the way through and finally subscribed after watching 50 of your videos, lol. Because my name is also Taylor, and the whole point of my google was so I could make a Hobbit tank for MY Betta....😂❤
If you’d still like to make use of your failed decorations... maybe instead of using them in another planted tank you could make some sort of fairy garden arrangement with them, except, it’s a hobbit garden. You could still make use of plants and the directions they grow to hide the places where the decorations are a bit damaged. Love the idea of a Skyrim tank! Looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

You can name your Hobbit-themed tank Baggins-Precious Bettas. At least, it's a thought! I like your imaginative setup!
You could still use your decorations in a terrarium or regular garden, or large indoor flower pot. Wouldn’t have to worry about cracking under water the same

Yay! Well thanks for finding me. Progress on the Skyrim tank has been slow-ish due to holidays and the demanding little baby, but it's coming along!

You could get a reptile or a land pet and you can still use your kool hobbit stuff

Hey thank you! My next project is ready for me to start, but I'm having to tackle re-doing my workspace floor first to make it waterproof, lol. Hopefully that will be done in the next week or two so I can get some projects officially started : )

Thank you for sharing your experience ! Too bad it fell apart, your hobbit aquascape was very pretty and it's nice to see that you are careful with the potential toxic chemicals you put in your tank. Fish safety is always the priority. I've been willing to use my artistic skills to make my own tank for a while now so this is inspiring.
You never said why you think it failed. I am planning on doing something similar with some of the same materials, so why it failed would have been important to this video where you said you would reveal that detail.

I've part made a bag end hide (little dessert jar for the inside) out of polymer clay but I have run across the sealant issue - I need one that is 100% waterproof and fish safe. I'm not completely happy with it at the moment which is another reason why it has sat on my shelf for months instead of being painted so if your Skyrim decorations method is easy/affordable I may just start over as luckily I saved 2 of the little Gu jars (is it Gu? I didn't actually eat them, my sister and her husband did but I'm sure it's something on those lines 😂)
Cannot wait to see this series, it is going to be amazing and I love Skyrim too - I haven't played in ages though, may have to dust off the old Xbox 😂
Definitely stay tuned then! Gosh, for the hobbit tank deco I sealed it with an epoxy resin. I can't be sure if it was the product that wasn't great (too runny? didn't seal everything?), or if it was my fault for not sealing it well enough (I did many coats!) or if I missed one tiny little speck and it just took a long time for everything to fall apart.

@@SimplyBetta so you think the issue was definitely with the sealant? I've heard of some people using that Plasti-dip/Plasti-Kote (whatever it is called) spray on sealer for aquarium stuff but when I emailed one of the companies who makes it to ask if it was aquarium safe they said they had no idea. The people who used it said that it was perfect and lasted for ages though. It's so difficult to know what to trust. I literally have one betta fish so I don't want to be testing it on him (not that I'd want to if I had "spare" fish either hahaha!)

I actually toyed with the idea of WoW themed tank but had trouble thinking of a good idea! I couldn't some up with something somewhat iconic, but that would work in the confines of a fish tank and also have a naturalistic element for plants.
The front gate of Stormwind came to mind once but that would be pretty tough to pull off
@@SimplyBetta Stormwind would be challenging, totally agreed, all those sculptures?! . So many beautiful places you could do though, imo VERY hard to pick lol. Your Hobbit tank was how I found your channel. It was beautiful, and I was so sad to see it go. But Skyrim!! 💛 I can't wait for this new tank! I've been playing the Elder Scroll games since the beginning of the series, and they are my absolute favorite video games. Ever. LOL. I love them almost as much as I love Lord of the Rings!
You have good taste! Hehe, Skyrim was my first taste of the Elder Scrolls universe. I think I was too busy with World of Warcraft to give Oblivion a chance back in the day. Heck, my family didn't even have a computer when Morrowind came out!

That's absolutely awesome. I'm a huge LOTR fan and Hobbit. I have an entire man cave dedicated to it with weta statues and books and movies and a bunch of other stuff. I wish I knew how to make those I would so add Hobbit tank to my collection. Thanks for sharing
Really nice work! Thank you for your video I'm currently looking for a clear sealant that could prevent my models leaching toxins in the tank. Seems epoxy resin is a better choice than Plasti Dip, which I found some people used for coloring. Thank you again for your stunning work!

Taylor! All these pieces from your Hobbit Tank were perfect! You can literally see your passion for The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings AND your fish. They were lovely. I hope you have an opportunity to set up those pieces somewhere where they are safe and not susceptible to falling apart.

Finishing this with resin is actually a bad idea. It cracks and then everything get destroyed inside, I am also worried about it's toxicity.
Use Krylon matte spray finnish instead (and it's non toxic in aquariums). Let it cure for 1 week or two until it's absolutely dry.

I just recently received a betta who I have in a bare bones 10 gallon right now (He was given to me as a surprise) And I’m so excited to convert it into a planted tank! They are so beautiful, like a window into a rich river/lake scene. I want him to be happy :)

Ok so many things to say! One. I have the same gaming headset!! I’ve never seen anyone have it too :D and do you have a PO Box because I used to sell skyrim merch and have some leftover necklaces :) ! Also Michael’s now has a terricotta clay that is aquarium safe! I used it to make my breeding skates. And I’m totally going to have to make a themed tank thanks to this inspiration - but Im totally going to have to go for Rune Factory. Thank you for always being so inspiring
Hey, I’m wondering if you know what paints are safe for a betta tank? Or if I could just use acrylic paint to paint over the clay sculpture and then use a special seal
Paulina De la cruz I personally use Krylon clear spray paint to seal anything but haven’t done it in a LONG time. Just make sure you let it fully cure for a week - 2 and wash it really well!

If you're going to do anything with polymer clay again I'd use fimo or premo instead of sculpey original or sculpey 3 as those 2 crack and break the easiest.
I think you should re use it but maybe on a bonsai I’ve seen so many do that and it looks amazing
This is the same reason why bridges fail. Sort of. Concrete absorbs water and rusts the rebar. They tried coating the rebar but this ended up worse because a pin prick chip of the paint let’s in water and it cannot escape resulting in more rust damage and bigger structural failure.

looking forward to it. skyrim is one of my all time favorite games! :) and actually. you said y ou didnt wanna make a video on how you made the pieces before. i tried with all the info you gave when you destroyed the hobbit tank. i gave in as i could only get my hands on fimo and it just was a nightmare to sculpt with for someone who was used to air dry clay. wont use air dry clay tho. it wont handle any moisture.
i was consitering making some sculpture then casting them in liquid molding latex, make a hard shell then cast them. but i never found out how i could cast them. i can only get my hands on a few types of resin and i dont know if any are aquarium safe (yay for living in norway)-
I've never tried fimo! I used sculpey, extra firm. It is easier to get nice crisp detail with the extra firm. As for resin, I used a 2-part epoxy resin. There is no reason why it shouldn't work (I think!) besides user error, like missing spots. Or maybe it was too watery and the 3 or so coats I used just wasn't enough. I can't be for sure!
@@SimplyBetta Some two parts epoxy resin can be bad for aquariums slowly leaking toxic chemicals inside of the tank. and i was thinking about doing a resin pour in to a mold ive made myself :) makes for easy duplication and it keeps better with time. only issue is painting it because i dont think epoxy sticks to cured epoxy :/ i would just pour a few mm then paint it from the mold then pour over the rest of the epoxy sealing it in without causing bulking on the outside :) but i cant afford resin either way. i have acrylic paint, latex and i think plaster gas to make a hard shell mold but without the most expensive component im out of lucky
