This video actually has nothing to do with me as I sold my 5.4 a year ago but wanted to watch anyway. I must give credit where credit is due and say what a great video this is. Very clear and informational and I love how you showed all the angles before and after dropping the pan. This video is sure to help out a lot of people who may be experiencing that noise. So great job in posting this great video!!!
To all the folks down below who are second guessing buying a Ford 5.4 I have 3 now with 5.4. 157K....190K and 346K batteries, brakes tires and oil changes that's it. Best trucks I ever owned.
robert hensen the biggest problem I saw with older Ford engines back in the 70's and 80's in the desert was their propensity to overheat. The next biggest problems was in the 80's when their electronic ignition control modules from the factory weren't very reliable. Change one out with a heavy duty module from Sorensen and the problem was solved. Besides that every engine family there were some problems specific to each, but that was the most common. But once you understood what those problems were they weren't any better or worse than their competitors. Somehow I've ended up owning more fords than anything else, but they've always been reliable other than ignition control modules. I took good care of the cooling system, and upgraded the radiator whenever a car I bought had a two core and that was that.
We religiously get 300k miles on the 5.4 engines in our fleets and all we do is change the oil every 6,000 miles. They've been the most reliable out of all the fleet trucks and vans.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos since I bought my 2006 F-350 2 weeks ago. It’s got 286000 miles on it which normally doesn’t bother me. It used to be an ambulance and I know the service was done regularly. I researched and found out that in 2011 it had a new engine put in at around 157000 miles. They put in a Jasper reman 5.4 and two weeks later they put another 5.4 engine for some unknown reason. Then again in 2014 they put a 3rd engine in it and was sold. This engine has 127000 miles and now the noises in the front. I figured it was maybe a phaser and then a body shop guy said sounded more like a guide. Then I seen this video. Great job. Since I’ll have the front opened up I’ll check everything else. Thanks again.
This morning, we started our 01 V10, which made chain noise for about 3 seconds. The first time, it happened, then went away. Cars been sitting for a week. Thanks for the video.
I have an explorer with the 4.0 v6 sohc engine. I've changed the oil regularly with royal purple since day one. The guides have finally failed on me at 252,000 miles and I'm about to change them here at the dealership I work at. I was quoted by my friend about 1500 bucks since it will take almost 30hrs worth of work. The secret to long chain and guide life is proper oil change at intervals. And change tensioners every 75k. Synthetic oil also helps too.
I would've done the work myself but the dealership paid for the repairs due to the fact that I purchased it used from them just a few hundred miles before this happened.
Mind you they did the minimum repairs possible in order to fix the problem. meaning they only replaced the parts that broke. If I did it myself I would have replaced all the parts that are prone for failure. they only replaced the one vct selanoid that blew and not the other one on the other side of the engine etc.
I own four Chevy’s and a Cadillac that have given me great service. Sometimes I wonder why I sit and watch these videos. It’s nice to see a good mechanic that really knows what he’s doing And explains it well And if I ever buy a Ford truck to mess with Ill kind of know what to expect and I have an idea on how to repair it. I’m pretty comfortable tearing a Chevrolet v8 engine into 1 million pieces and rebuilding it but I’d be a little intimidated by the timing setup on one of those. I was a little worried the first time I put a head gasket and timing set on a 22 RE Toyota and that was before I was looking on UA-cam but asking The right people a few questions it worked out fine. Thanks for the good videos man!
Very professional and useful information as always. I have a 2004 Expedition I picked up used a couple of months ago. Your wealth of knowledge has helped me to tackle numerous tasks under the hood. You are appreciated.
Great video, shows what regular maintenance can do to keep your engine running perfectly. My 04 Expedition went over 350k without any major issues due to regular maintenance.
We have had nothing but Ford trucks and vans with 4.2, 4.6 and the 5.4. All trucks are being abused daily by employees. Never any issues. The 4.2 has over 400k on it now and one of the 4.6 has 380 k. The only trouble we had was that one of the spark plugs seized into the block and spent some money to have a heli coil put in. No big deal. Still remember my '92 F250 with nearly 800k, but it had the 7.3. So, to keep maintenance costs to a minimum, we will continue to use Ford for our fleet.
Hmmmm. Do I smell bullshit? Work for Ford? Just got done replacing the last of every single front of the engine parts on my Ford F150 (power steering pump, alternator, air conditioner compressor, alternator, water pump, and stuff I'm probably forgetting). At 160K miles. On my third door handle. Second power window motor. Plus every single u-joint. Upper and lower ball joints, and a ton of other crap. Fords? Oh, and the sparkplugs like to back out and it cost $500 a wack to have the coils put in. But what's $500 to a proud Ford owner? Oh yeah, Fords are great all right. If you're lucky you'll buy one that you need to jack up the motor to change the spark plugs. It's always easy to find videos on how to repair Fords because everyone on the planet who owns one is repairing it.
@@ravenfeather7087 Bud, I am not an avid Ford guy but I have 2 F250 5.4's at work that have both made it pass 200k miles without any repairs other than a tedious spark plug swap. Anyone who is running into that many problems is someone who is not taking care of their vehicle. Maybe you bought it from an owner who did so, maybe you are just incredibly unlucky or maybe you are the owner who did not take care of it, idk but I don't agree with your judgement. It is not the best engine but it is not a bad engine either. Anyone who takes proper care of their vehicle should not be running into so many issues.
@@VagueMemory I'm on my second at 116,000. First one died at 298,000 (Ahole did u-turn and caused our inevitable meet and greet). Poor car would of lasted easily another 300,000. Fords last only as well as you care for them. And because they are so common occasional repairs are cheap. So ignore the feather cap..:)
4.6 &5.4are both great engines my 3 have 180k, 275k, 389k. I did timing tensioner on the oldest one at 150k, with guides, not the chains, sprockets or oil pump. took me about 8 hours. don't go chasing the what if , because it's a no win situation. oil pumps rarely fail on these.
therockkkkher If you put a spark plug in there and don't check on them every time you get a transmission fluid change than it will blow out. See people that don't know how to turn a wrench are the problem, they will take everything for granted than when it fails they blame someone other than themselves.
lasts forever: Since I do all my maintenance and with this problem being eminent to the Fords from what I've seen on the internet and all thathas happened around me I check them not once have I had a plug blow. So that's just my method.
Most standard transmissions have the clutch cylinder bolted to the outside of the transmission housing . Ford has it on the inside . Thanks a lot Ford , a 5 minute , 40 buck replacement becomes a $1000 major job.
Man, your videos are the best on the Internet, I've probably watched all of them! I need some advise. My 2005 5.4 f150 recently lost a lot of power. Driving home one day it was just lacking, and by the time I got home it was barley going. Here's what I've done: changed fuel filter, checked fuel pressure, (30-42) changed fpdm, maf, and throttle body with a running truck, new oil pump, full timing set, phasers, VCT solenoids, 8 plugs and 8 coils, also pulled the pan the check the pick up, it was clean. Probably done some other things. It's starts and idles good when I first start it, but when I drop it in gear it idles down pretty low, (4-500 rpms) and when I give it gas, it starts making noise and doesn't want to move, but will if I feather it, and if I give it too much gas, it dies. Also removed exhaust and it made no difference. Codes were 0300 0305 0308, now I have a 0171, and one I can't remember, but was something about an o2 sensor stuck rich or something. Any ideas? Thanks man, keep up the good work!
Your mechanic videos are the best on UTUBE. Brilliantly explained and demonstrated. I just bought a used 2012 Ford Fiesta Sport for my wife and your videos on this model answered a lot of questions. At 90,000 km, with your information in mind I have organized to renew the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, serpentine belt, crankshaft seal and bolt. Also change the transmission fluid. Total cost in Thailand at the Ford Dealership, 11,000 Baht; super cheap price for "peace of mind." Thanks for your valuable input.
Brian, what do you attribute the differences in some of these engines going well over 200k without issues and some have failures before 100k miles? Oil change maintenance and filter type, or just luck ? You're a real blessing to those who want to repair these problems on their own. I for one, appreciate your experience and helpful guidance. Thank you !!
I bought an 03 marauder 4 months ago with 110 miles for $1500 that sounds the same at idle. Got right valve cover off last night. Guides look intact but chain is very loose. Going to tackle left valve cover and front cover today. The all aluminum 4V engine is a piece of artwork! Sounds magnificent at high rpm. The average Joe is scared of these modulars. Previous owner loved car but sold cause he got repair quotes from 4000-12000. Ford, GM or Chrysler, don't matter to me. If I like the look of the vehicle I want it.
I have a 2003 F-150 4.6 L with 235,000 miles. Not a single engine issue, but have replaced the plugs (twice) and all of the coil packs once. Ball joints, tie rods and other suspension components are the things that seem to wear out the most. I use synthetic oil that I change every 3,000-4,000 miles. I do have minor leaks from the head gasket, rear-main oil seal and transmission, but the truck is almost 15 years old. I have no complaints about the Triton.
Very nice. I have a 2008 FX-4, 5.4, with 318,000 mi. I've had since new. I change the oil about every 4,000 mi. Since it's 3rd oil change I've used 10W40. My blue beast as I call it has had two tune ups, two coil packs replaced, and one serpentine belt replaced. Oh and probably five or six fuel filters. That is it. Everything else is original. I love my F-150
I've had two of the same gen f150's with same engine. I still have one of the trucks. Never had a bit of noise out of either truck. I also changed my oil weight but used the 5W-30, top tier category 5 oil, changed every 10k miles. It is good to know that a 10W40 will work without causing cam timing codes from the VCT's unable to get the timing to go where it needs to be because of the thicker oil. Some European cars have this issue with thicker oils. You did the leg work for the rest of us. Glad your truck held up with so many miles on it. Also, seen a lot of 4.6 2V engines make 400K miles with the Shell Rotella T 15W-40 diesel oil but they don't have variable cam timing so the thicker oil clearly wasn't an issue there and I live in Texas so cold weather wasn't an issue either.
167K and my 99 is still running sweet. Nearly 20 years old just needs a bit of paint. No major issues ever. Best pickup I ever owned. Grew up in ford pickups. No reason to change to another brand.
Articulating scopes are more user friendly. Have also had more of the 4V engines dropping valve seats than the others. Do not fight the cams, buy the timing/holding tools.
I have worked on quite a few 5.4 32V engines, mostly Aussie Boss motors. I install them in Mustangs. The Navigator 5.4 32v version actually has a 2V oil pump, which has the small diameter pickup tube. What I do, is use the Melling Shelby GT500 pump, (M360 I believe) and use a 2005 5.4 3V pickup, as the 3V motor has the larger pickup tube to match the pump. Both use the same oil pan. Also, Ford Racing has complete timing kits which include everything for the 5.4 32V. Get the Ford GT kit, not the Shelby kit. The Shelby kit has smaller cam gears and different chains to clear the cam covers of the Shelby. The kit that fits the Navigator is M-6004-A544
Our work Van's with the 5.4 one has 310 000 another with 220,000 and one with 198,000 All good motors! My old 04 f150 with the 4.6 has 238,000 and running strong no reverse thought! Lol
I need you as my mechanic. You are knowledgeable and straight to the point. I have a 4.6L f150 and it probably needs chain, guides, tensioner and certainly something in cylinder 3 fixed. It started misfiring 2 weeks ago :(
Jay Allen what like who had the great idea that you have to unbolt a truck cab and lift it up just so you can do maintenance on engine. That should be the reason not to buy a ford pickup period. That’s why I bought a 01Ram. which is still on road. oil changes plugs distributor caps. Engine 5.2 l over 200k doesn’t burn oil and compression in spec. Just used full synthetic oil and changed it every 3k. Since ram no.longer offers that engine. In 2017 I bought a brand new Ram 2500 crew cab Tradesman with the cummins. Is the lowest trim lvl. For the same price as a 1500 Crew cab sport optioned out.
Just want to say thanks for your videos. My 04 F150 5.4 triton gave me 198,000 miles before the timing guides decided to go. Your timing system video walked me through the process with extreme confidence. While I had everything apart I went ahead and replaced the pump as well unsure if the small shavings got up in there. Thanks again for your videos and expertise you share. By the way after I got the ole truck running the wife made me trade it in for a new truck graduating up to the new 2016 F250 6.7 liter diesel it's our new vacation vehicle. Look forward to videos on this truck in the future.
OMG. Simplicity of design is a sign of good engineering. I wonder who is making these engines so complicated with really no improvement in durability and economy. Give me an old 50's- 60's truck anyday.
I paid to replace cam phasers and still have same problem on my 06 Ford. It has 90k miles. He said lesson learned, he will start testing oil pressure and I'd have to pay to pretty much do the job again. Always runs great until the motor temp reaches normal. Then it makes that noise until I rev it up. My old 93 Ford with 300 straight 6 still runs great. I'm gonna look in the oil pan asap if it's easy enough. Thank you for this.
Have at least 10 customers with 500,000-700,000 miles on their e-150 vans. Pretty tough engines if you take care of your basic maintenance. Oil change!
Hi Brian, once more an excellent and well detailed clip. I am becoming maintainance manager on a huge game ranch in TX. They have 15 F-150 (all v8) 4 x 4's. I'll be picking your brain buddy. You are the man! Thanks again.
Justin P. yeah not just GM but Ford our 5.4 2 valve is great but they ruined it with the 3 valve Ford 300 is a tank just like the 350 Chevy basically all brands get ruined as they get newer not saying advancing is bad but they took a wrong way of how they advanced their engines
I used to drive chevy ended purchaseing a f150 4.6 ltr because i got a good deal on it. At first it was gunna be a fix n flip now its my daily driver i may never buy another chevy in life.
Man, you ever thought about making a new Cosmos or something? Your voice and the way you portray what you are doing is amazing. Also, although these Triton engines like to shoot out spark plugs I think they are pretty nice engines when it comes to actually driving something with them in it. Especially the 4.6L we had in our 2002 Expedition.
I have a 4.6 that is over 13 Y.O. Same thing Mobil 1 every 5K. using FL-820S filter. I just had Blackstone labs oil analysis done. (Which I highly recommend.) Engine came back perfectly within expected perimeters for contaminates. I love mine, will keep it till it gives me a reason to get rid of it.
Everyone here is talking about these engines and all the timing issues these engines have. Do y'all know how many timing sets I changed on GM's during the late 80's and early 90's? GM blessed their V8's from around 72-74 through about 86 or 89 with a Teflon coated timing set to reduce noise. The Teflon wears off and the aluminum gear underneath skips on the chain almost immediately, some bent valves, some didn't. Always a mess in the pan. Lots of younger guys don't see these as they've almost all been replaced by now. Granted, this was $20 to $40 in parts back then so not near the money that one of these Tritons cost but it was a real aggrivation back then. Did one on a 84 Buick Riviera (front wheel drive, V8 powered). Whole engine had to come out to replace timing set and clean the pan.
Cam lobes wore off too. Good luck getting a sbc to go over 150k miles w/o major work. Even 5.7L made up through 2001 are only good for 200-250k miles from my experience in fleet care. And at that they use oil, tick, smoke. My 4.6 2v had 9,000 idle hours on top of the 240,000 miles and only used 1 qt oil on 10k mile oil change interval (royal purple) after about 7 or 8k miles. I towed a big Grand Prix with it towards the end and hardly knew it was there. Shame it got totaled
Strong Tower Lawn Care We’ve got two little W 4500 cab overs here at work with vortec 350s in them There spare trucks now because of the mileage. but still running good. I looked while I was in the parking lot one has 307, 000 miles the other has 341,000. Not too shabby. The E 350 box trucks that they bought to replace these older GMC‘s Have the 5.4 . Power wise there about the same as the old 350 no complaints there but Lord they are giving a bunch of trouble There’s always one at the Ford dealership and I didn’t think these newer ones blew out plugs But we’ve had four or five of those in the last few years. They’re getting replaced by 4500 express vans with the 6.0 Litre vortecs as fast as we can afford to do it . Having driving these ford triton’s here at work is the reason I can’t make myself buy an F150 even though I found some that I really liked. I’m kind of scared of the 5.0 coyotes to.They should just build one pushrod engine for people that want it And see how it goes. If my 2013 5.3 can get about the same or better gas mileage as these new dohc engines Why even make these complicated things.
Hey man. Love the vids. Very detailed and informative. Also very accurate (why this dude is the shizzle) 😁. This might sound stupid but I think a video on the “normal” sounds a 5.4 L makes would be wonderful. Think it would help people know what sounds are supposed to come out of an engine and what it’s supposed to sounds like. Like the phaser ticking. A lot of people don’t know what a good running engine is supposed sound like. Thank you. Again awesome videos man. no BS no unnecessary info no guess work. Keep it up man.
When it comes down to it you just gotta take of your stuff. My 5.4 has 196000 on it and it pulled trailers and has been beat on. But I took care of it and have never had issues.
4.5L DOHC, former Naviguesser engine. Asside from worn out guides had 2 exhst seats dropin left head and one on right. Explored oil pan with articulating scope, lots of junk. Since engine was to find a new home in an F350 Dualy, dropped pan and cleaned. Good possibility could have used articulating retriever tool, bore scope and air pressure to clean oil tube and pan. Went back together with new chains and guides, cam holder is almost a MUST. Into a new home, wider than a two/three valve and had to remodel to fit. Good project vehicle and ran great, lots of transplanting of support gear.
Hey Brian, how long does it typically take you to go through the timing drive component repairs from start to finish? I'm sure it gets easier with experience, but you make it look so darn fast and easy!
Yeeh good evaluation leads to success, helpful blog increase my enthusiastic to start turn my 5.4l 3v eng. apart to stop headache of chain rattle and slap Thanks Brain
So many comments about the 4.6L modular engine being a bad engine!(?) Head gaskets, tensioners, pistons... sounds like a lot of Mopar and GM fanboys to me. There are literally tens of millions of these engines in service, and in 2004 when I was looking for a new car I researched this engine which was in the 2004 Mercury Marauder I was thinking about buying. Anybody want to guess how many crankshafts for the 4.6L were in dealership parts departments in the entire US of A? Twelve! I'm a retired ASE Master Technician and I worked for GM dealerships during my career; Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac and Cadillac. That's why I knew what to look for - "What do the parts departments stock for the engines and transmissions?" When I retired I was choosing between the GTO and the Marauder, you can see my choice by my avatar. I think my 4V 4.6L all aluminum engine is a honey; 300+ HP from 280 cubic inches! Oh, and one more thing... ...no noisy valvetrain yet. Goes 140 with the stock engine and is smooth as glass. (I've done some modifications to the running gear and computer program.)
I'm about to buy a 2007 Ford Expedition EL which has 153k miles on it. I'm wondering what kind of problems you think I might expect assuming that it was kept well and all maintenance was done? I would appreciate your advice thank you.
Just like BMW M62tu and M62 V8 engines. Shares the same issues with the timing guides coming apart from the plastic not holding up. Key thing to prevent timing chain issues is 5k mile oil changes. Saves you an engine
I just picked up an 06 explorer with the 4.6 in it despite all the problems I've been hearing about but only because it only has 25,000 miles on it and looks and runs like New. I'm hoping to avoid any radiator problems by swapping out the radiator cap with a 16 psi. I am also thinking of changing the plugs but I'm wondering if it will still be risky even with the low mileage, What do you think?
Could this cause oil pressure to drop at idol? My truck has this same problem and I’m wanting to know if I fix the chain if it’ll fix everything such as my oil pressure drop
my 03 mustang gt (2v) has been the best car I've owned. super reliable. of course I keep up with the maintenance on it and do all the work myself but I feel like I would be able to drive it across the country and back with no problems.
You're calm and collected ness makes these issues seem not that hard to fixmost UA-cam videos about fixing engines involves throwing wrenches and cussing
Cam crank correlation, a simple thing made complicated by balance shafts, VVT, phasers, tensioners, etc.... Love my 455, timing made simple and gobs of power and torque 🤩
Teresa 67 Factoid Nothin if it’s done right. My Accord has 200K on the factory chain, guides, and tensioner. That’s not to say that Honda hasn’t had issues with VTC sprockets but the guides haven’t been an issue. It really depends on the quality of the chains manufacturers are using. If you’re using top quality pre-stretched chains you won’t have broken guides. When cheap quality chains wear and “stretch” they break the guides. My old Toyota truck ran 630K miles on one chain replacement.
Metal tensioner wearing down a metal chain with no way to observe wear? What could go wrong. Everyone who insults the plastic guide is clearly the farthest thing from an engineer. Stay in your own area folks and leave it to the pros
Terry Melvin no it’s just people don’t change the oil and let it slap for years like this. Miss 3 oil changes by 1000 miles your guides are gone on any car bud.
So I'm guessing that the shop that said the same that was wrong with my 5.4 3V, didn't really need to "replace" the engine and charge me $8900 for a new one?
hmmm, Mine is an 04 and they didn't say anything about sludge or clearance and I don't even know what a thrust washer is. All the said was " the bottom chain guide is broke and we're getting high enough oil pressure. You need a new engine."
The rest of the truck is great. Not to mention if I can get the truck to last another 10-15 yrs, give or take, THEN I'll trade it in for a new diesel for retirement. You gotta remember, its an 04.
Thanks for posting this! I have an '06 E350 5.4 at 190K and I've been concerned about the chains. It sounds great now, but it's good to know what to listen for.
I've drove 4.6 Ford's , Mercury's and Lincoln's . Some as my personal car , some for work as a Taxi Driver some with as many as 350,000 miles . Never had a timing chain go out .
Those Pieces are Nylon, Not Plastic as stated in the Video. You are so right, the Nylon will not last forever, they used to use it on the Cam Timing Gear in the early Windsors, they were good for about 100,000 miles.
PLEASE ! I am Begging you, My 4.6 Sparkplug blew, What kit should i use for the fix? any suggestions would be absolutely wonderful, Thank you for your time
This option is my best option, Correct? (The Option To Drill & Tap and Insert) Compared to Replacing the Head. Also I cant help but keep watching your videos. They are Great! Your seem like a Great person. Thanks!
Hello. Working on this engine. Burned exhaust valve on 5th. Right chain guide were missing a peace. Right head is off already, today going to take left head off too.
Great Video!! Really liked to see and hear leading to how your diag lead you the cause and fix. Awesome Video with the camera snaking down inside. Hey is that an inside view of your new garage with Three Bays? Lolz awesome budz. I'm sure looking for more views ;)
Low oil pressure, for a while now, several months. Thought it was oil filter or viscosity compromised. Chain started talking to me last week. Doing this VERY soon. New high volume pump and timing kit coming in. 01 Victoria.
No it was not just a Lincoln thing as a matter of fact I'm almost positive, but don't quote me, Ford started the four valve engines in the mustang cobras, and then they bled out to the F-150s Expedition Eddie Bauers and the Navigators. Someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm not.
Thank you very much for that little video man I'm going through that same problem thought it was a lifter that fell out and it weren't wound out to be the timing chain and the only reason I checked it is because of your video and while I'm in there I might as well change the oil pump because that's a lot of work thank you again bye-bye
I posted a video on my channel of a problem I can't seem to solve on my 03 Grand Marq LS. Can someone take a peek and tell me what it is? Greatly appreciated. 🙏🏽
*I have 280k on my 97 Thunderbird and my engine seems to run smooth and quiet. Is there anything I should do to the inside of the engine at this point?*
i'd be embarrassed to admit that i owned a 97 thunderbird with 300,000 miles. you need to get off the comment section of youtube and get your money right.
On a 5.4 2v, with a fresh rebuild, what is the proper startup after installed? Do you crank it until building oil to the valves or ok to just fire over for the first time?
This video actually has nothing to do with me as I sold my 5.4 a year ago but wanted to watch anyway. I must give credit where credit is due and say what a great video this is. Very clear and informational and I love how you showed all the angles before and after dropping the pan. This video is sure to help out a lot of people who may be experiencing that noise. batteries, brakes tires and oil changes that's it. Best trucks I ever owned.
Ricky Thompson , I don't want to jinx myself I've got a Super Duty Ford E350 with 198K , Best work truck every!
I'm eyeing a nice low mileage 08 f150 5.4 3v Bryan's video's scare me but ppl like you who comment high mileage no problems give me confidence lol.
Maintaince is key for any vehicle. It is easy to ragg on a truck when you never give it an oil change or swap fluids change plugs... Ect.
EXCEPT WHEN THEY RUST IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
No matter how you feel about the 5.4 Triton, the Coyote is a far superior engine and a step in the right direction.
i used to make fun of fords you know found on road dead , but then i bought a dodge ram . i think fords are better now

Did you determine the issue?
Thank God
My 5.4 blew up so finding your videos may just be a savior for me 🙌🏻
How many miles was on yours and what exactly went wrong with it?
I have a 2010 5.4l Triton with 122k miles on it and recently the timing went off due to a broken tensioner and a bad VCT solenoid it was $1600 to fix.
I would've done the work myself but the dealership paid for the repairs due to the fact that I purchased it used from them just a few hundred miles before this happened.
Mind you they did the minimum repairs possible in order to fix the problem. meaning they only replaced the parts that broke. If I did it myself I would have replaced all the parts that are prone for failure. they only replaced the one vct selanoid that blew and not the other one on the other side of the engine etc.
a mechanic that knows what he's doing and does it right. thanks for the video man!.
Great to hear!!

Oliver Meyer thats a good idea.
@@VagueMemory I totally agree. I'm a firm believer that all cars break. Unfortunately, all-to-often, it is people that break them!
4.6 &5.4are both great engines
my 3 have 180k, 275k, 389k. I did timing tensioner on the oldest one at 150k, with guides, not the chains, sprockets or oil pump. took me about 8 hours. don't go chasing the what if , because it's a no win situation. oil pumps rarely fail on these.
daryl turcott I agree mine has nearly 300k on it still running strong. Also it's had a very hard life dragging a trailer and skid steer around.

If you put a spark plug in there and don't check on them every time you get a transmission fluid change than it will blow out. See people that don't know how to turn a wrench are the problem, they will take everything for granted than when it fails they blame someone other than themselves.
Zachariah Woller not true I've had almost a dozen of these engines I never check plugs and I've never had a plug blowout
lasts forever:
Since I do all my maintenance and with this problem being eminent to the Fords from what I've seen on the internet and all thathas happened around me I check them not once have I had a plug blow. So that's just my method.
Zachariah Woller To each their own
Most standard transmissions have the clutch cylinder bolted to the outside of the transmission housing .
This Guys a Killer Pro Ford Mechanic !!
I don't even own a Ford with a 5-4 and I still like watching your videos wth....lol
Once fixed you have a $10,000 car... nice find
Check the Tensioner, that thar is youns problem
Amazing. Fantastic camera work on this one. Thanks for taking us along!
Modular 2valve 5.4
My 1999 F150 4.6 with 226,000 miles runs great.Good ole Ford.
The Navigator 5.4 32v version actually has a 2V oil pump,
which has the small diameter pickup tube.
What I do, is use the Melling Shelby GT500 pump, (M360 I believe)
and use a 2005 5.4 3V pickup,
as the 3V motor has the larger pickup tube to match the pump.
Both use the same oil pan.
Also, Ford Racing has complete timing kits which include everything
for the 5.4 32V.
Get the Ford GT kit, not the Shelby kit.
The Shelby kit has smaller cam gears and different chains to clear the cam covers
of the Shelby.
The kit that fits the Navigator is M-6004-A544
Will this oil pump upgrade work on a 1999 Lincoln navigator 5.4 32 valve ??
Our work Van's with the 5.4 one has 310 000 another with 220,000 and one with 198,000
All good motors!
It started misfiring 2 weeks ago :(
engineers are great at their job they design these engines to have stupid small problems constantly so you have to bring it into the tech to fix them
Jay Allen
lol note how they put the water pump in the middle of the engine valley on the 3.5 Ecoboost and drive it with the timing chain
*If you're an idiot then maybe you should get a Chevy*
@@Ford_Raptor_R_720hp_V8 It has nothing to do with the old chevy vs ford argument; ALL modern vehicles are engineered like this. Planned obsolescence.
For the same price as a 1500
Crew cab sport optioned out.
How is the F250 holding up?
OMG. Simplicity of design is a sign of good engineering. I wonder who is making these engines so complicated with really no improvement in durability and economy. Give me an old 50's- 60's truck anyday.
William Gratchic 4.6 2valve, ls series. All great motors.
Great videos. Watching in Australia. We have your Mod 5.4's here with 04 heads. Killer engine once you get past a few weak component choices by Ford.
It's behooves me how Ford is legally able to make these motors over and over again
Have at least 10 customers with 500,000-700,000 miles on their e-150 vans. Pretty tough engines if you take care of your basic maintenance. Oil change!

351m and 400 had the same problem, dad had a 80 f-250,p.i.t.a.
you soaked um.aint got to pull an engine. readin too many manuals.

That's why I knew what to look for - "What do the parts departments stock for the engines and transmissions?"
When I retired I was choosing between the GTO and the Marauder, you can see my choice by my avatar.
I am also thinking of changing the plugs but I'm wondering if it will still be risky even with the low mileage, What do you think?
because of you i pay a tech to change my guide tensioners in my 4.0l every 75k to be safe runs like a champ
Could this cause oil pressure to drop at idol? My truck has this same problem and I’m wanting to know if I fix the chain if it’ll fix everything such as my oil pressure drop
Yes it can cause your concern most likely due to broken guide pieces plugging the pickup.

These are the last versions that you can work on yourself versus taking it to a shop.
Not true, it’s all based on your skill and how thick of skin you have, no such thing.
If you program it then there is no need for the dealership!

metal chain rubbing against plastic. what could go wrong?
Oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh, I KNOW the answer.............
IKR?!
Gm definately has the beat in simplicity and design
So I'm guessing that the shop that said the same that was wrong with my 5.4 3V, didn't really need to "replace" the engine and charge me $8900 for a new one?
Correct unless you had abnormal amounts of sludge, clearance issues or thrust washer issues on the 07 models.
hmmm, Mine is an 04 and they didn't say anything about sludge or clearance and I don't even know what a thrust washer is. All the said was " the bottom chain guide is broke and we're getting high enough oil pressure. You need a new engine."
not getting high enough oil pressure. oops typo
How many miles on this motor ? What mileage should we expect this problem to a cure ?
165k miles but this can happen anytime as low as 30k miles. Once that tensioner blows out it is a domino effect.
I've drove 4.6 Ford's , Mercury's and Lincoln's . Some as my personal car , some for work as a Taxi Driver some with as many as 350,000 miles . Never had a timing chain go out .
The 4.6 2 valves were good motors. Better then the 5.4 3 valves
I've got a question can I put a 5.0l block in a f-150 that has a4.6l if I put the heads and intake off of the 4.6l on the5.0l block
Lol no
Yes . Send me a video when you try to start it
Those Pieces are Nylon, Not Plastic as stated in the Video. You are so right, the Nylon will not last forever, they used to use it on the Cam Timing Gear in the early Windsors, they were good for about 100,000 miles.
Love your channel I have learned a lot
I have to say you are very knowledgeable in these engines.Your videos are very helpful.Im dropping a new engine 5.4 3v in my 06.
PLEASE ! I am Begging you, My 4.6 Sparkplug blew, What kit should i use for the fix? any suggestions would be absolutely wonderful, Thank you for your time
+Pedro Flores 4.6 3v or 2v??
2v 2002 and anything you think i should check while im at it would be awesome
This is the only kit I recommend for 2v engines- amzn.to/2lVLDAf
I go over the kit and sealant I recommend here- ua-cam.com/video/NmYfg8D_SxY/v-deo.html
This option is my best option, Correct? (The Option To Drill & Tap and Insert) Compared to Replacing the Head. Also I cant help but keep watching your videos. They are Great! Your seem like a Great person. Thanks!
This was super thorough, and I thank you for your work on this video for all of us
Great job, too bad nobody can fix the fuel economy.
the 10mpg is killer in Cali
I had a Ford a long time ago. I now own a Subaru and a 2010 C-6 Vette. I still miss the Buick Roadmaster Wagon I lost to frame rot.
With all the aluminum that was evident in the pan, should you replace the oil pump while your in there?
Thanks for a great video.
+ScottDLR Definitely I changed the pump and sending unit too.
Thanks!
Hello. Working on this engine. Burned exhaust valve on 5th. Right chain guide were missing a peace. Right head is off already, today going to take left head off too.
Like your videos, but the doom and gloom music scares the hell out of me, now i only watch them during the day.
+Xmech 2008 lol
Thank you for another excellent tutorial video! It's crazy how many chains are in there.
Great Video!! Really liked to see and hear leading to how your diag lead you the cause and fix. Awesome Video with the camera snaking down inside. Hey is that an inside view of your new garage with Three Bays? Lolz awesome budz. I'm sure looking for more views ;)
Yup that the new garage for now I should do a quick shop tour now that it is setup for work.
where is your shop?
can you give me a ford pn for 5.4 3v valve cover bolts,
Low oil pressure, for a while now, several months. Thought it was oil filter or viscosity compromised. Chain started talking to me last week. Doing this VERY soon. New high volume pump and timing kit coming in. 01 Victoria.
Didn't even know they made a 4v 5.4l. Was that a Lincoln thing? (EDIT: Just watched the rest of the video and saw it was a Navigator)
Can the front cover come off without removing the valve covers?
Yes I have done this before but in the end you will need to remove the valve covers any way for further inspection and the timing procedure.
How about the 4.2 engine common failure points to watch out for. Thanks for sharing!
Little rubber vacuum elbow rots.
I got mechanical PTSD from the timing chain job on my 03 Grand Marquis
Anthony Lopez please elaborate, I’m curious
I posted a video on my channel of a problem I can't seem to solve on my 03 Grand Marq LS. Can someone take a peek and tell me what it is? Greatly appreciated. 🙏🏽
@@ivancedillo8 just alot of work
@@calvincox2958 I think a timing guide is worn out. Plastic parts. You'll have to remove timing cover and replace all of it.
@@determineddad7935 Thank you. Do you think it'd be worth replacing or finding a salvaged motor?
Good video. I own an 09 Crown Vic Police Interceptor that is just now starting to make some noise at start up @147,000 miles.
FordTechMakuloco, Keep up the good work. It's appreciated. Can you tell Us how many miles the 5.4 L 4 Valve had on it?
137k miles
*I have 280k on my 97 Thunderbird and my engine seems to run smooth and quiet. Is there anything I should do to the inside of the engine at this point?*
you got lucky. your ford is the 1 out of 10,000 that makes it past 100k miles
i'd be embarrassed to admit that i owned a 97 thunderbird with 300,000 miles. you need to get off the comment section of youtube and get your money right.
*I'm a Futures Trader*
That was a GREAT video! Especially liked the close-ups of the broken pieces and the oil pan remnants. Nice job!
Thar she blows. Good job.Thank you FordTech
Getting ready to have this fun with my 01 Towncar 4.6. Getting close to 300,000.
2003 F150 4.6 with 90k miles. When they can't build a motor that keeps the spark plugs in the head...never again Ford anything.
On a 5.4 2v, with a fresh rebuild, what is the proper startup after installed? Do you crank it until building oil to the valves or ok to just fire over for the first time?
