I have a 2009 F150 4.6l 3v with 356k miles on it. I bought it new and changed the oil with Mobil1 synthetic 5-20 every 6k miles. No major problems engine doesn’t leak or burn oil. Replaced the alternator and ball joints other than normal maintenance nothing else
You just sold me on a 2010 f150 I’m looking at with 94 000km(60 000) miles, I’m going to do a full maintenance overhaul and the thing will last me forever ahaha thank you for this comment
I have a 2010 F150 4.6 3V at 180k I replaced all timing components and installed a high volume oil pump. It has 250k now still running great. 5w30 in these engines are a must imo.
I currently own a 2003 Grand Marquis with the 4.6, best engine I've owned. It currently has 167k miles, just blown it's first plug last week, calvan kit saved it, not a hard job at all, took 30 mins. Only engine issues I've had was the common intake coolant leak (new intake needed) and a thermostat. I'm never selling this car
That’s a 2 valve engine. Some of the best engines ever made. Look at all the police cruisers that were beat up 200k miles then sent to be taxi’s for another 200k+ hard miles.
I have a 2008 Mustang with the 3v. This is an extremely reliable engine, like Toyota level reliable, with one caveat, you have to do the recommended maintenance/oil changes. As long as you do that, there’s really no issue with timing/phasers or any other part of the engine.
Im a chevy guy. But bought a 06 xlt 4wd f150 4.6 2v that was banged up on right front and had a stolen salvage title to boot. 1300 bucks. A shit ton of miles also. So i knew it had been rawhided. I rebuilt suspension. Basically went thru a thorough tune up. Replaced entire ac system. Its been 3 yrs and commute 100 miles a day and drive with purpose myself. Ive been really impressed by that sucker. The smetric transmision is what ive been disappointed by. Its still a helluva spunky truck tho
I have a 2005 Ford E150 cargo van with over 333,000 miles on it, I haven't had any trouble with the engine. I add a 1 quart of oil between oil changes. Oil gets changed 5,000. I do most all my own service work.
I’ve got a 2004 Grand Marquis. Love the 4.6L and I’m glad to have the 04 model, which is when Ford began fixing some of the more common problems like intake manifold cracks, etc. Approaching 127k miles and it runs like clockwork. I drive it a LOT, around 20,000 miles a year. I put Castrol Edge high-mileage 5W20 in there and just had the coolant and rear differential flushed. Here’s to another 100k miles!
I’ve got a 98 rcsb 4x4 with the 2valve 4.6l V8, truck has been flawless for over 14 years of ownership, just ball joints and regular maintenance stuff. A lot of ppl dog on these trucks, but the 4.6 2valve is an absolute work horse! I see them out on the roads all the time. Still putting in work. I personally love my truck, it’s has 385k on the clock, still runs great.
My daily is a 2010 F150 4.6L 2V. It only has 55,000 miles on it and I plan to keep it for a long time. This particular engine is one of the most reliable V8s ever made!
I have the 04 V8 2V! 245,000 running great rebuilt transmission new drive shaft the one time non repairable drive shaft was a complete bummer but love this truck Mann I will continue to take care of her
All of my vehicles are 4.6L. I have a 1997 Expedition with 220k I have a 2008 Crown Vic p71 with 150k and a 1998 Mustang GT project. I trust the engines with my life. They last forever idle smooth and are easy to work on.
Got a 4.6 2v in my 2001 Mustang GT, got a 4.6 3v in my 2010 Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin, got a 4.6 3v in my 2010 Eddie Baurer Explorer. I must say the 4.6 has been super reliable. I have never been stranded, or had one issue with any of them. Regular maintenance, oil changes go a long ways. This engine does not make me miss my 5.0's from the 80-90s.
My 2000 4.6 2V has 299,000 miles and still runs great. No timing chain rattle yet. Regular oil changes and routine fluid service. Automatic transmission still alive too.
I guess I've been extremely lucky because I never had timing chain issues or oil pump failures in none of the six 4.6L and one 5.4L engines I've owned. I did have to replace 1 intake manifold.
I have owned and maintained on the conservative side of 30 98-2011 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8L and never had 1 timing chain issue and most of them went to over 250K miles and not uncommonly 300k... couple transmissions and intakes (even after the aluminum crossover, considering the base between the bridge and head was still plastic!) here and there otherwise The 2v 4 thread heads issue was fixed in 03.5+ (I believe most were remedied 02+ in mustangs anyway)
@@commonsenseisdeadin2024 my 2001 Expedition with the 4.6 made it to 275k before it started to have timing chain issues. But pretty hard to be upset if that’s the worst thing to happen in a quarter million miles 😅
I’ve been a professional technician for 30 years and I pretty much hate all brands these days but the 4.6 2 valve was a major leap forward for Ford’s small block technology. With proper maintenance they were fully capable of running great for hundreds of thousands of miles. I can’t speak for other states but back when our state’s Highway Patrol used Crown Victorias exclusively the idle hours alone were staggering. That’s not even taking in consideration the number of miles on them. They did it on regular bulk 5W20 too. After all that cab companies couldn’t wait to buy them at auction and then they would put in tons more miles in cab service. I’ve worked on my share of 5.4 Triton trucks and they were definitely more problematic but I have still seen a lot of them in fleets with 350-400K miles. I’m being honest. I prefer the more simplistic design of the LS platform but I can’t be critical of the 4.6 2-valve after seeing so many of them run great for hundreds of thousands of miles. Maybe I have been lucky but I’ve never had to fix a 4.6 2-valve for spitting a spark plug out. I’ve done 5.4 Tritons over the years though.
Well good. I have a 4.6 2 valve myself. Looking on what I need to save for. 210k ish. Runs well. Leaks some coolant on top, rear main seal and oil pan seal are bad. I think it may need a water pump as well. But she was cheap and from a coworker. Definitely keeping it topped up on oil and coolant.
Hmmn, the 4.6 2v's in all of our Fleet vehicles are the most low maintenance trucks we have had. 11 are 4.6 F150s and 2 f150s are Junk 5.4 trucks. The 2 valves are very reliable...ie Police car engines. The 06 in the fleet is at 300k miles in and has only had normal maintenance.
J - Thanks for adding this valuable insight, it will for sure help future viewers. They are very stout engines, we’re just pointing out common issues that are seen across many owners
I had a 4.6 in a 95 Crown Vic. Single exhaust 190 hp car. Though I had to trade the car for the dreaded minivan, it was a good running motor car. I never had any engine problems. It would yield 28-33 mpg on the highway loaded down with family and luggage.
I have a 93' Crown Vic & I love the way the 4.6 run. I'm getting a little rattling (pinging) when accelerating up an incline, but after I figure that out, I'll be very pleased with it.
Few things that come to our minds: Check the spark plugs, check the knock sensor, and check to see if there is a lot of carbon buildup on the ports and valves.
I'm surprised nobody has commented on the valve cover gaskets and grommets which are notorious for becoming brittle and leaking oil all over the spark plugs and spark plug wire boots. The engine misfires and lacks power until the plugs are temporarily cleaned or the gaskets and grommets are replaced which are a real pita to change.
I have a 2004 F150 STX with the 4.6 engine 2 valve, after replacing the spark plugs, one pop out,EZ fix, with 244000 miles on it,runs perfect, does not burn no oil and still have plenty of pep, everything orginal including the alternator, runs good and strong.
@@8020Media purchase this truck in 2005 with 6000 miles on it,oil been change every 3000 miles, still to this day,air filter, fuel filter, all been change when needed, air filter get check ever oil change, fuel filter get change every 30,000 miles,it been a good motor,I been a mechanic from 1979 to present, and I am empress.,I scope the cylinders the last spark plug change, and I could see the factory making on top of the pistons, cylinder walls look perfect ,if this is to much info,I apologize.
I have an 06 f150 4.6 I to had 1 spark plug blow out only because mechanic didn't torque right. 255875 on mine,1 battery alternator and that plug that's it. I would trust this truck to go anywhere. 5w 30 Full synthetic. Not a tick not a rattle runs perfect
I’m driving an 11 towncar with 470,000 miles on it .I saw the maintenance records before I bought it and saw no major repairs. The oil light did start coming on a few thousand miles ago . I started using 10 w30 instead of 5w20 and I haven’t seen it light up since
This engine was designed to be used in cars, trucks, work vans, boats, and generators. It was based off of records and math from the 1960's LeMans trials as well as other engines throughout the decades. It was tested through serious conditions and extreme weathers. There is no GM or Chrysler equivalent to the long life of this overall best american V8 gas engine.
To avoid breaking plugs off in a 3v do them hot with an impact. I am a tech and have never broke a single one off and yes copper anti size going on them going back in.
1997 tbird with 4.6 2v at 302,000 miles. 4.6l, aode tranny and rear end are all original. The timing chains are original. Had the intake manifold leak and had a issue with the spark plug wires getting heat soaked because they go under the alternator killing them fast..took care of the leak and moved the wires to run over the top of the alternator. Starts and idles like brand new..I think the motor might just outlast the body.
I own a 05 Mustang GT , purchased it at 89,000 miles ! Owned it 5 years now have 130,000 on the clock so far I have replaced/maintained the intake manifold ,alternator , radiator including hoses ,the rear coolant piece (dont remember) , and clutch ; this isn’t including suspension but as of right now I have a misfire that comes and goes ;idle is rough ; I still believe that this motor is reliable and has imo common things serviced at the mileage I’m at ! I have taken the opportunity to upgrade and tune most things ! I’m happy with motor and car 🚗! I’ll keep an eye out for these issues !! My shit ticks too since I purchased it !
Thank you for passing on these important factors. I've been wanting to do some much needed planned maintenance on my 2005 E150 bread N butter work truck. Greatly appreciated.
I've had personal autos and work autos with this engine. My buddy in Marines father has a cab/livery business in NY city. He'd buy these panther cars at 200k plus and run them till they died in NY stop n go traffic. He'd get 500k regularly at the least, highest cars had a shake over 700k. All serviced on time. Usually jmod so they don't slip as much. I have a 99 Cartier 253K, 07 Designer118K still like new. I've never had plug, timing issues. I always pulled covers and checked them at every 50k after 100k. I've been lucky but I do take care of them. I do my service on time every time. This is key. All have their issues. I've had alot say trans, plugs, fresh air leak, air ride etc but most besides vent leak is a service issue. Most don't do services religiously. These modulars need it or urr asking for issues. Our work trucks and vans have had some of the issues mentioned. All was bought new or close but not serviced on time. It's hit or miss. I do have a rattle and know my 99 is gonna need a timing set in future. Just a slight rattle. I also removed back cats. I live in a no sniffer county. And I modify the air box to get more air. Not a cai but remove the 2 inch horn and cut hole to 4.5 inch. Engines are air pumps. Faster in and less restriction out is best for a V8. Also they have another issue most don't know, the pass side frame behind rear A arm mount on outside will rust. It's a easy reroute AC drain line on either side of frame. Another is the foam Ford used that holds water and will rust. I use Eastwoods internal frame and chassis black, farm implement paint etc. In rust country it will rot away if not. Also use 1 quart of any new, used oil, same with trans fluid, 1 tube of grease, 1 wax ring toilet flange gasket. Heat and mix in old pot. Spray, brush etc all under and inside cavities. Will NOT EVER RUST. Pap was 80 and still doing this. I do this. It outlasts, anything u can buy and it costs $6 with used fluids. Most wax has no oils or very lil. I live in rust belt so it's a must. Not saying the video is attacking the 4.6 but just saying my experience. If they had another 75 hp and same with torque it'd be a perfect engine in panthers or trucks. I wish they still was made. I've owned them for 15 years and wish I'd owned them for 25. They was used in many autos and are a good reliable engine. Like he said check the plugs, most that popped had only a few threads. Using a bore scope u can pop 1 out and look. If urr is this type just be aware to do as he said. Both of mine look good with good threads. There's kits to fix this if u like so that's not a worry. Also I use a extra oil and trans cooler. They're cheap or u can use a junk yard 1 if u like. Heat and the soft shifts kill trans. I'm cheap so I save $$ in JB economy. But use motorcraft parts. Also plug door drains and fill with baby, mineral, or melted Vaseline. Let sit for a week and drain and save. And I hear so many say air bags suck. They do when u don't protect them. I see ppl swap and not put anything on them then say they suck cause they don't last a decade. Coat with Vaseline once a yr. It's rubber. It will crack. I spray with 303 all rubber parts and they last forever. Spray tires inside and out and do once a yr and they won't crack and last too. Bags get extra cause it's under car with all the elements and snow, mud etc. I know this is long but I love these engines, cars and compared 2 most made during or since then are not. Service on time, protect what u got and enjoy. Nothing rides better than the panthers but maybe a Citroën suspension from the past. That's the smoothest riding car I've ever drove or rode in. Lincolns 2nd best. They are the 1st car to get a 5 star crash rating across the board. There's a reason why they are still used as taxis and cop cars. If the other 2 mfg would've kept making the Caprice and the Chrysler type of cop cars like the Furys of old, maybe they'd not been so popular. They get good mpg, reliable and safe. I wish they still made them and station wagons. Idk why we had to do the SUV BS. A full frame sedan are hard to beat, like a sore Peter.
@@8020Media Love these cars. I've spent alot of time and talked to alot of ppl who built, work on and own these. I found out all I could so I can keep them going. Today's cars are a joke. Too much $ for a turd. These have proven themselves since day 1 in 80s. Can't say that about any other cars of this type. I hate to see ppl struggle. I believe if we have this platform why not share all we know and can to help each other. We've spent too long divided and hating. We need to help 1 another in any way. This is what I know and love so why not. I see alot of YT pros who do good work but seem to miss out on basics. When cutting rusty metal they weld in new but don't use weld through primer. Gonna rust. same thing and metal behind what is repaired is bad also just cover up. Money's tight, Fuk JB, so we gotta make all things last. If we spend half tge time helping 1 another as we do dogging 1 another wed be much happier. Money's short, times r hard, can't afford a new junk car, these r old but very nice, all I can give is my advice, treat them good and show them love, always remember fellas, wear a glove. Big cats can be dangerous but a lil puzzy never hurt anyone.
@@8020Media Considering what newer cars are doing like blowing up engines, trans, batteries, etc the quality is shat at best. I'd love to challenge any 1 to get a newer auto out of warranty, 100k, I'll get a used panther, make it fresh as good as new and see over the next 5 years what issues they have and what work needs done. In over a decade I've had to replace a starter cause the hot wire side of starter deteriorates, and that's it. Not talking about service but breakdowns and how many times she didn't start or go from point A to B. I've had jobs where if u didn't show up u was fired. Boss was a greedy pick and said urr ass is at work unless u die. If urr spouse, Parents whoever dies tough crap, u better be here. He did not care. He fired a new guy cause he didn't check fluid levels in a new Dozer. I was raised yo always do that no matter but I see why he didnt. If they loaded, drove up on low boy, started and drove off and it's NEW it shouldn't have any leaks or low on fluids. But he got fired start of 1st day. I had to have a reliable auto to drive in tri state area in oil and gas land clearing. My 99 did this perfectly year after year. If this was 1995 then we'd have all sorts of nice full size sedans to talk about. But after they went to SUV they are gone. Only thing left easily got with a full frame and V8 is the panther. Sad. Very sad that kids today will never ride in a big sedan, station wagon etc on family trips. I've saw the country side sitting in back of a station wagon, back of big cars. Now it's stare at a screen and get dumber by the minute on car rides. Those born around 00s mostly have no idea what riding in a big sedan, wagon or back of a pickup truck is like. What are we doing these days? Making crap autos, nothing lasts and we just throwaway, no tv repair shops, and what ppl say about you or comment is so dam important that if we don't get our egos stroked daily we have mental breakdowns. I miss the days when men were men, women were women and we played outside until dinner time and ppl kept their word instead of canceling by text. How did we do it? Ppl today would be totally lost with no SM or cell phone. Might have to actually talk to another person. Oooohhh how scary my Anxiety is rising. Cmon ppl. Make a great auto, make things last or fixable and help 1 another by being kind or not saying anything. Can't tell ppl Merry Xmas cause they get offended. I guess me and my kind just don't fit in today's delusions and mental illness. Cause I don't see a cat or don't see ppl as what they pretend to be. Have a gr8 wknd
I love my 4.6l 3v. I got a 2010 mustang gt with around 165k on the odometer. Not sure what maintenance was done by the previous 2 owners but can say the ol girl get driven pretty hard by me. I like to do my oil changes about every 3000 to 5000 miles, with 5w20 royal purple and a Wix xp filter. As for spark plugs Ive replaced them 2 since in the 5 years ive had her. Its a phenominal engine and i would buy another 4.6 without hesitation in any vehicle platform
Gotta 08 Explorer 4.6 3V V8 Absolute Beauty with a beast!! Only issue I had was a constant Cylinder 8 misfire due to rain water leaking through the windshield cowl pooling water leaking into cylinder 8 and sometimes #3
The 2v 4.6 was in Panthers until 2011, and also the E series had the 2v 4.6, 5.4 and I do not know for sure the 6.8 until I want to say 15 but I can't recall. (They also still had the 6.0 powerstroke until 2010 in the E series too.) The 4v was in the mark 8, aviator and marauder too. The explorer had an aluminum block 4.6 2v. There were also 2 different casted heads and cranks for the 4.6. Windsor had 8 bolt cranks and 13/14 bolt valve covers and Romeo had 11 bolt vc and 6 bolt cranks. The Terminator and Marauder had iron blocks, the Marauder didn't have forged internals like the termi so not quite a cobra motor, same as the harley davidson didnt have forged rods and pistons like the Lightening that most think is the same thing.) Just some tid bits for your knowledge
I had a 96 tbird with the 4.6 and the dealer replaced the intake manifold under warranty . I had to replace both ignition coils . But no major repairs in seven years of ownership.
@@james51502 I love my truck, however the intake bolts are corroding causing anti- freeze to short out coil packs and the passenger side frame has now rusted away. Ugh. Lol. I'm hoping to get it fixed before winter.
@@thomasstanfel7589 i just got done re threading cylinder 8 spark plug hole but now one of my coils is not working and it’s still missing really bad, im in the process of figuring out which one isn’t working and why
The spark plug issues are unforgivable. What other modern engine has a reputation for blowing a plug out of it’s threads, and there’s a $100 ignition coil hard bolted directly above that gets blown to dust when the plug rockets. Then to improve the situation they came up with the ridiculous super long reach plugs that break below the threads on removal. But the logic of the variable valve timing on three valve variants takes the cake. While every other oil pressure controlled VVTI system (all of them?) the fazer relaxes to low/slow rpm cam timing at idle and opens the control solenoid so oil pressure pushed the phaser to the advance/ high rpm setting when oil volume and pressure are most available. Not Ford. At idle the diminished pressure and volume are called upon to push and hold the phaser into low rpm mode. So when the oil passages get blocked (shame on the owner) or the oil pump gets lazy you get rough idle along with the noisy chain running on loose guides. Other than that, what reason could you possibly find to avoid these engines like the plague ?
change your oil every 3k...and spark plugs at 50k....motor and gaskets will live forever....people who listen to manufacturers recommendations are begging for a new car every 3 years.
i have a 2006 GT Mustang....it has 220k miles on it ...i have had the spark plug issue....but i bought the removal kit and had no problem removing them with the kit.....it doesnt leak or burn oil....and it has way more power than it did when new
Love this video! Been trying to research these motors and the UA-cam algorithm has not disappointed. I have a question though and it might be irrelevant because I no longer have the truck. Back in 2013 I purchased a 1998 F150 super crew from my employer (it was a shop truck, immaculate interior and nice body). It had 167k on the motor. The one time the shop guy gave me a ride in it I asked him “Is your check engine light on?”. He said “nope”. I said “this truck has a miss. You need to have it checked.” He just shrugged his shoulders. Sure enough, one week later it was sitting way in the back of the shop. I asked him why he wasn’t driving it. He said there’s something wrong with the motor. (Go figure!) So I purchased it. I realized I didn’t have the time or space to do a motor swap so I paid a mechanic to do the swap. He said let’s look at it first in case it’s something simple. He called me a few days later and said the motor is toast. He has good news and bad news. Good news, it’s a good motor. I asked “If it’s a god motor why did it go bad?” He said “someone drove itit too long on a miss.” (I didn’t even tell him the story of the truck.) I asked him what’s the bad news. He said “typically a jasper reman is about $2,500 with core. Since this is a Raptor motor jasper wants $4,500.” He said another option is another motor from salvage. He found one with 80k miles on it. He drove down to the salvage yard to hear it run before he had them pull it. He puts it in the truck and I get it back. Drove it with no issues until it hit 235k miles (approximately 130/140k on motor). Then it did the same thing as the day I bought it. It ran awful, hardly wanted to idle, puffed, smoked, backfired. I really loved the truck. I just didn’t have the time to tear into it. But it’s bothered me to this day as to what was wrong with it. My nephew found some coolant in the oil but not bad. Still not good though lol. Now I’m wondering about cracked intake. Or stretched timing chain. I don’t have the truck anymore but based on this short story I wrote has anyone else had experience with this? The tenth generation f150 is absolutely my favorite one. We have a 2002 lariat super crew with 260k miles and it runs like a top. I also love these triton/modular motors too. I’m doing more research on them because I’d like to put a 4.6/5.4 motor in my old Fairlane with the 4r100 transmission. Just want something different under the hood that people wouldn’t expect. Everyone does the coyote swap and I’m not knocking it at all, I just want to be different. I’m fully aware that a modular will cost more than a Coyote to build up. Anyway, thank you in advance for your time. Love the video. Thank you for posting.
JP - Thanks for taking the time to write this out! Coolant in the oil certainly isn't good. But the symptoms you listed could've been a number of the things we listed in the video. Keep us updated on your future builds!
I think 8020 Media nailed it with the importance of proper service. My 02 F150 I bought new and service it every 3500 miles or so, buy it only has 90,000 miles.
The 2v 4.6 was offered in the panther platform until 2011, 3rd gen (02-05) explorer, on base model f150s until 2010, and on the e series vans until their discontinuation in 2014
Matt - Thanks for the insight! Also for sharing your experience. This will help future viewers. Hope the Explorer gives you another 100,000 miles without major issues!
The only engine more bullet proof than a 2 valve 4.6 is a 4 valve 4.6. Especially the 4 valves in the 96-98 cobras. Tekskid casted aluminum block, 6 bolt mains, forged crank, rods and pistons.
The 300 straight six is ford's most durable motor,I have a 2v 4.6 in my work truck I'm I've abused the heck outta its got over 300 but it constantly wants to poop wire boots and plug ports full of mostior and debris but it's fairly reliable I carry tools with me but that's every vehicle
Well, that was my original understanding, but may be incorrect. Anyway, I think the 2-valve motors are super solid, the cracking intake manifolds on earlier units not withstanding.
I have a 98 F150 4x4 that's badged 4.6 Triton V8 on each front fender. So I'm not sure what your talking about when you say the 4.6 was never identified as the Triton. It's also been absolutely reliable for the 311,xxx miles I've put on it since new. It had 8 miles on it when I bought it new in 98. I've not experienced the spark plug issue or any other problem . I change the Full Synthetic 10w-30 engine oil every 6000 religiously and have the transmission serviced every 15,000 miles religiously as well. It's been a fantastic truck. A little more power would have been nice but it's running as good as it did new
The 4.6 and the two valve is an absolute monster. The 5.4 and the two valve is great. The 4.6 and the three valve is great. The 5.4 and the three valve is great until it's trash and once it's trash it's trash.
Thanks for the info. I'm presently looking at a 2009 F-150 4×4 4.6 V8 Super Crew Cab. I like the truck it looks great with a decent lift kit and nice wheels. I was looking for a 5.0 Coyote but no luck finding one close to where I live. The 2009 has 185,500 miles on it. The transmission has a clunk going into third gear but the dealer is going to repair that. I hope I don't step into a money pit, these are great trucks as long as you take care of them and keep up with regular maintenance. Wish me 🤞luck !
I own a 2010 F150 with the 4.6 3V engine in it. Bought it at 186K km. and now two years later at 217K km. I love the way it drives, mainly use it for my carpentry business. I tow every now and then. Here on Vancouver island l run into lots of challenging terrain, never had any issues. I have it regularly checked by different garages including a 100 point check with the Ford dealer. I prefer different individuals inspecting the vehicle since each has their own specialty and might see something that another one missed.
@@rogiervantilburg3440 No issues with removing sparkplugs or having timing chain problems on your 4.6-3valve ? That is positive information, thank-you 👍
@@toniocavalari6936 the spark plug issue is easy enough using the tool lisle produced. Annoying sure but not the end of the world. The phasers were more of a problem on Mustangs and such churning out more RPM. They how surprisingly well but anyway you look at it that millage is getting up there to not know the history on. I'm not sure what trans is in it but jmod or a shift kit or at minimum tune up the pressures. The less pleasant the shift is the better. Smooth shifts equates to slipping the gears in which equals heat. Heat is the destroyer of all!
I used to have a 2010 Ford Explorer with the 3 valve 4.6 V8 and it had a startup rattle and when it reached operation temperature the motor would make a faint knocking sound. Was especially noticeable at drive thru's or driving beside a wall of a building. Had great power but that noise was the reason for getting rid of it, especially when Ford said it was a normal characteristic of these motors 🤦♂️
I just picked up a one-owner 2001 f150 4.6 2v. The truck has 355,000 miles on it was driven by the old man until head gasket started leaking on cylinder 1 I did a compression check on the 7 unaffected cylinders and this thing still has almost perfect compression... original engine. The guy said he had timing replaced at 150k and 300k even though he never did have any timing issues in the first place. This old man seriously deserves some kind of award
195k Miles on a 2007 Mustang GT not a single issue . Only thing I’ve done is Coil Packs and Spark plugs @ 183k , oil changes. Everything else original , even the clutch. I’m going to turbo it this year to show the DURABILITY OF THE 4.6 3V! MMR sells metal tensioner to replace the faulty stock plastics and much more durable parts all over for these engines.
Got 150K on my 07 GT and looking to do the plugs. Any issues breaking plugs? Also on the original clutch over here! It's been largely bullet proof but these plugs got me worried
@@rehtorbF03I wouldn’t worry about them, just be gentle and don’t torque them down too hard, if they are too hard to get out soak some pb blaster on them for a while, they should come right out..
I have 4.6 3v with 140 miles, I do regular maintenance as required by ford manual. I upgrade to bully dog chip, added stainless headers for 5.4 L with modification right side header. Larger throttle body, cold air intake. Performance muffler… I have easy 350 hp I use truck towing mostly Rv trailer of 6580 lbs ( scaled) tow trailer no problem up 7% grade at steady 50 mph at about 3700 rpm. The little that can!!!!
I have a 1999 Ford f150 2wd 4.6 engine. I have been using E85 for a 1 year and 4 months and I am getting 33.4 miles per gallon. I usually put in 15 dollars of E85 and I can put on 252 miles. I have a hole in my exhaust manifold
If oil is changed the tensioners are fine. If not? The 5 cent gasket blows out because they used plastic housing instead of cast. Mellings brand tensioners are cast iron seals itself. The motor loves a super flow mellings pump too. They make a really nice timing kit with better guide rails too.
So excited getting a 2008 E150 to convert into a camper van and it's good to know the engine is reliable except for the timing chain and spark plugs XD
Just did the sparkplugs yesterday, when you have to do yours, make sure to take all the precautions and get the extractor tool. It is the only way to do it, and it will still take around 10 hours to do the full job
I have a 1995 Crown Victoria with the 4.6L and for some reason it sounds like there's a can of rocks in the engine whenever it's under load or above ~2500 rpm's. I've done everything from replacing the cats to rebuilding the trans to replacing the EGR and IAC valves. Other than this one minuscule problem it's been a great car and I don't really want to buy another car in this over-inflated market, hence why I put so much into mine. Knowing my luck it's about to chuck a rod but this noise has been present for years.
@@8020Media I've read about a lot of other 4.6 owners having the mysterious "rattle can" acceleration noise that comes back for no apparent reason. If I'd known about that issue I probably wouldn't have spent so much trying to fix mine up.
@user-bt2uw8ov8n I got my crown vic for dirt cheap, keeping it on the road is mostly about me being stubborn cause the AC works, the interior is nice, and car prices are way too f-ing high right now. Someone else said it might be leaking oil through the valve stem seals, it's smooth as silk at idle or higher RPM's, but under load is when the rattle can noise comes around.
4.6 2V 1991-2010 , improved gens during that time.. On the 4valve Timing Chain issues/failure is related to the pivot-pins breaking.. this is due to constant High RPM use , the factory pin that screws into block is of smaller diameter/larger outer , 9mm upgrade resolves this/same diameter both ends (Accufab explains this).. Ha. I have a 2002 F150 with a 4.6 and have blown out two plugs. The repair was not expensive, but it did happen twice. Mine is at 190k miles and no noises like described with the timing chain. The breather cover says Triton on it, but there is not a Triton badge on the truck anywhere.

Fun fact. John Mihovetz has gone 5.88 @ 256mph with an almost entirely oe parts 4.6 4V. 3,000 hp @ 10,000 rpm with 55 psi. OE cast block and heads, timing components and factory crank.
Recently purchased 2010 F150 xl Regular Cab 4x2 4.6 24 valve... 38k miles. Runs great except for the exhaust coming through the heat vents. Also, this could be the only post millennium full production vehicle with no interior cabin filter; just the engine air filter. Nice to know the fuel intake has better air quality than the passenger compartment. Make it make sense. Scheduled to go in for an exhaust leak check.
My 09, 4.6-3v has 111,000 miles. Just had a tune-up & plugs. Always proper oil changes. Starting to hear timing chain rattling. I’m too old to do the job. 72y. o. My mechanic is pretty good, but says he doesn’t hear any problems. ? I love my big red Super crew! How do I find someone decent enough to replace the timing chain, etc. ?

How to stop spark plug blowout on a 4.6L. Install spark plugs in a COLD engine that’s been sitting for awhile and torque to about 20ft lbs *yes that’s higher then factory spec but it works, and won’t strip threads* I’ve used this method for years on many 4.6’s with no blowout issues. I do not use antiseize on my plugs. Even checked the plugs at a later time and non were loose all still tight. As for oil pumps, I’ve honestly never heard of the oil pumps being an issue on the 2 valve variations of the motors. 9.5 out of 10 times if you get a low oil pressure warning it’s because of a bad pressure sending unit not a bad pump itself. Other then that just about everything here is accurate.
I saw a video where some shop (just for fun on a junk 4.6 head) torqued the plugs to lug nut specs of about 95 lb ft, and they did not strip the head so no worries going to 20 or 25 on these plugs.
4.6 2 valve one of the best overall ever NY taxi's had some to 1 million miles most well over 500 thousand where do they get any better all need maintenance
I had two grand marquis with over 250ooo miles before I sold them. Love the air ride so I just bought an old lady owned Lincoln town car with 70900 for 4000 these things go forever!
Eddie - We don’t make this video to scare others from the 4.6 nor do we think they are bad engines. We strictly make these videos to inform. We have also seen many surpass 200k. Thanks for taking the time to add this insight!
My '94 Cougar has this engine, thanks for the info, might have to do some minor work on this engine in another 50 years or so. For now it runs like new.😎
Lethal - There's a few things you can do. Likely the easiest is pulling your VIN and using a VIN decoder. Other things to look for is the 2v's typically had a black plastic intake manifold, unless this has been switched out. The 3v had a metal intake manifold with a noticeable bulge in the middle for the variable valve timing mechanism. The 3v also came with "aluminum" valve covers.
The biggest flaw is Ford Engineers! For example the heater core. You can see it from the engine bay(at least the piping). It would have been a no brainer to make it come out from that side. But no lets make it so you have to drop the steering wheel and dash. And other other fronts. Ford stopped making a replacement OEM intake manifold for the Crown Vic.. THANKS FORD. AND THEY WONDER WHY THEY HAD A 24% DECREESE IN SALES LAST YEAR...
Ford says to use a little bit of antiseize but it really doesn't fix the problem. The Champion plugs are better or better bet is to get the kit to fix the issue from someone like Lisle Tools.
I really need someone to help me find out what’s going on with my 3v 4.6 - I’ve been having problems with my Mustang feeling like it’s about to die when driving at slow speeds or stopped in traffic for awhile but not in park. It’s so weird. Also I have my transmission doing a loud clunk when turning my wheel putting it in reverse. And lastly my passenger window has no power at all and is stuck a little open so these are the plagues I’ve been stuck with since I first got the car a few months ago it really sucks because I really wanted a fast reliable v8 car you know.
I read somewhere in mid-2008 Ford redesigned the sparkplugs on the 4.6/5.4? Is this true? And does that fix the breaking issue? I have a 2010 F150 with a 4.6 3v
Yes, this issue was fixed in 2009+ models so it shouldn't be an issue in you 2010. I just recommend changing the plugs every 50,000 miles or earlier depending on how many miles you drive per year. Plugs are really cheap and it's an easy DIY if you have a bit of mechanical skills so no reason to go any longer without changing them.
A lot of these common issues are maintenance related. Though sometimes premature failure with proper care and maintenance does happen. If you buy OEM spark plugs now, you won't have any issues. The exhaust manifold issue is a ford thing back to the late 70s early 80s. Lol
Anyone know why my 2009 f150 4.6L 3v makes a swirling sound all of a sudden think it’s a belt cuz it gets less loud after a while but theirs another squealing stil loud and wat not basically just curious if anyone knows what sounds or problems can happen or occur in my type of truck or at least what to check
Really? I am the original owner of a 2001 Expedition XLT with the 4.6 pushing 300,000 miles. Everything is original except one alternator, and one AC compressor. Just normal tune up and suspension components over 23 years. Zero timing chain and guide issues that you claim is a issue. I have had many vehicles of many makes and cant imagine something more reliable. Ignore the oil cap and run 5W-30. You will thank me.
I run 5-30. Full synthetic valvoline "20k mile protection" line or royal purple if it's in stock. Still change it every 5k miles. Seafoam clean before every oil change. I put this truck to work. I'm trying to break it so I have a reason to 5.0 swap the ol 06 regular cab 4x4👀but it's just such a good reliable engine. Hell, it hauled around three entire beds worth of mulch today, putting me within 100-200 pounds of max payload capacity, and it still ran great and was responsive (obviously in terms of a vehicle at its limit) Oh yea. It's at about 150k miles. As far as I know, the only issue it's ever had was some brake line thing that was just dumb luck. And didn't even cost enough to care about remembering
My 2006 2v 4.6 has 298k. I bought it new and totally neglect it as far as maintenance. Seriously 10-20k between oil changes. When I change the oil it’s black immediately because of lack of oil changes, The only thing on the engine I’ve replaced is spark plugs 3 times and a cylinder head temp sensor and pcv valve a few times. The engine still runs great and doesn’t smoke. The transmission is amazing still to this day. This truck is a workhorse I’ve hauled equipment way to heavy for it. My trackhoe and dump trailer weighs 13k lbs combined and I’ve pulled it more times than I can count. I’ve hauled my boats 1000’s of miles. I drive the shit out of it. I have to pull onto a 70mph highway and put it to the floor until 70 nearly everyday, The transmission is smoother shifting than my low mileage Chevy. I serviced the trans for the first time at 230k. This is the best I’ve ever owned. I will never sell this truck! I’d say if anyone has issues from this engine it’s from running low on oil. Because I’ve proven it’s not maintenance that keeps it going. I’ve neglected maintenance on this truck horribly bad according to folks. MOTORCRAFT OIL IS KEY!!! I’ve seen a live test on oils and motorcraft beat Mobil one full synthetic. Castrol high mileage came in second on this test. I run motorcraft oil in nearly everything I own. It’s funny when I take my Chevy for an oil change and the cap says Mobil one and I tell them motorcraft. I’ve been told so many times. Ur putting ford oil in a Chevy??? 🤣🤣🤣 People crack me up!!
I just bought a 09 ford mustang with 4.6L 3v that’s more than “lightly modified -Msi coils -24lb injectors -K&N intake -Bbk long tube headers/ X pipe - 3.73 gears and I knew that something was wrong with the timing because it wouldn’t idle smoothly and kept fluctuating A couple days ago the oil pressure indicator “low oil pressure” came on but only when I’m at stops (signs or lights) I don’t know what it could be but I just parked the car and bought new timing kit and high volume pump because I don’t want to grenade my “new to me” car
@@8020Media so here’s the update I installed a new belt/belt tensioner for the car and new fuel filter for the car I then took it to the shop for the timing and oil pump and it will be done by December 4th They told that a engine swap would be needed because the current one has alot of mileage (150k) and they think the car was neglected (found sludge in the valves) I told them I would consider it but I would like to keep the engine in the car for now until I can source a new one I talks to a couple local mechanics and my friend who’s a mechanical engineer and they said to through in Diesel fully synthetic oil in it Apparently they’re is a lot of additives and cleaners in it that will help prolong the life of the engine plus zinc for the internals As of right now the car is still running and driving and no noise like rod knock can be heard from the engine

Camshaft phasers are probably worn out. Check out the FordTechMakeuloco UA-cam channel for videos on what is wrong & how to fix it. IF that is the problem, you must have it repaired or the engine will be destroyed. @@Russell-pe8xn

Love the looks but having had a King Ranch with a 5.4 I'm well aware of the timing chain problems but I heard they could go just over 200,000 km before it was wise to replace.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like you could be experiencing engine knock.
@@8020Media what can I do about that? What causes it?
Few things that come to our minds: Check the spark plugs, check the knock sensor, and check to see if there is a lot of carbon buildup on the ports and valves.
I'm surprised nobody has commented on the valve cover gaskets and grommets which are notorious for becoming brittle and leaking oil all over the spark plugs and spark plug wire boots. The engine misfires and lacks power until the plugs are temporarily cleaned or the gaskets and grommets are replaced which are a real pita to change.

R - Thanks for the feedback. We hope it was helpful.

@@8020Media Considering what newer cars are doing like blowing up engines, trans, batteries, etc the quality is shat at best. In over a decade I've had to replace a starter cause the hot wire side of starter deteriorates, and that's it. Not talking about service but breakdowns and how many times she didn't start or go from point A to B. I've had jobs where if u didn't show up u was fired.

The 2v 4.6 was in Panthers until 2011, and also the E series had the 2v 4.6, 5.4 and I do not know for sure the 6.8 until I want to say 15 but I can't recall. (They also still had the 6.0 powerstroke until 2010 in the E series too.)
The 4v was in the mark 8, aviator and marauder too. The explorer had an aluminum block 4.6 2v. There were also 2 different casted heads and cranks for the 4.6. Windsor had 8 bolt cranks and 13/14 bolt valve covers and Romeo had 11 bolt vc and 6 bolt cranks. The Terminator and Marauder had iron blocks, the Marauder didn't have forged internals like the termi so not quite a cobra motor, same as the harley davidson didnt have forged rods and pistons like the Lightening that most think is the same thing.)

@@thomasstanfel7589 i just got done re threading cylinder 8 spark plug hole but now one of my coils is not working and it’s still missing really bad, im in the process of figuring out which one isn’t working and why
@@james51502 Hopefully it's a simple fix, those coil packs can be extremely temperamental.
Marty - Thanks for taking the time to share this insight. We've seen many 4.6's last a while.

The 2v 4.6 was offered in the panther platform until 2011, 3rd gen (02-05) explorer, on base model f150s until 2010, and on the e series vans until their discontinuation in 2014

The only engine more bullet proof than a 2 valve 4.6 is a 4 valve 4.6. Especially the 4 valves in the 96-98 cobras. Tekskid casted aluminum block, 6 bolt mains, forged crank, rods and pistons.

I love the way it drives, mainly use it for my carpentry business.
I tow every now and then. Here on Vancouver island l run into lots of challenging terrain, never had any issues.

I prefer different individuals inspecting the vehicle since each has their own specialty and might see something that another one missed.

Fun fact. John Mihovetz has gone 5.88 @ 256mph with an almost entirely oe parts 4.6 4V. 3,000 hp @ 10,000 rpm with 55 psi. OE cast block and heads, timing components and factory crank.
C - Pretty sick! Thanks for sharing.
Yeah exhaust leak would be my guess...
Had many Fords through the years, now just 4 remain. Thank you for some good information about engines!
Pat - Thanks for the feedback! Hope it helped.
Also beware of the nylon insert for the coil pack that can grab ahold of the screw and not come out😡
L - Thanks for sharing this insight!
Robert - Thanks for sharing your experience! We would advise asking around. A mechanic like that typically comes from word of mouth. Someone knows someone that doesn't charge an arm and a leg.
Wjye - Thanks for taking the time to write this insightful information. It certainly will be helpful for future viewers!
Yes, those oil sending units seem to go out more than on most engines. Funny thing is they seem to malfunction more often when they get cold.
Don - Wow! Thanks for sharing this. 1 million miles is VERY impressive!
I have a 2009 Ford f 150 stx with 354 thousand miles still running strong only issue is the frame is getting weak no place in it to keep the salt out
Mark - Thanks for the feedback! Hopefully you get another 354k out of it.
I had two grand marquis with over 250ooo miles before I sold them. Love the air ride so I just bought an old lady owned Lincoln town car with 70900 for 4000 these things go forever!
J - Thanks for sharing your experience!
My 2001 F150 with a 4.6 is indeed badged Triton V8 on the fenders.
Ah interesting, I think there are a few cases but for some reason the majority did not get it. I believe it was a trucks only thing too.
Triton branding started in the trucks in 1997
And yes my 2001 also has Triton branding on both the fender and engine cover
Thanks for providing your experience.
Same here
I have seen lots of 4.6 with way over 250.000 mi and no timing chain problems.
Eddie - We don’t make this video to scare others from the 4.6 nor do we think they are bad engines. We strictly make these videos to inform. We have also seen many surpass 200k. Thanks for taking the time to add this insight!
Overall they are good, reliable engines.
Surdo - Couldn’t agree more!
Legendary
Absolutely. My vote goes to the 2v being the most reliable gas engine ever made up there with the 350 sbc and 3800
My '94 Cougar has this engine, thanks for the info, might have to do some minor work on this engine in another 50 years or so. For now it runs like new.😎
9 - Nice! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.
I have a 2001 f150 5.4 2v with 331000 miles on it. Had to replace the intake a year ago. Other than that no problems been very reliable.
M - Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like you take great care of it.
@@8020Media thanks for the reply
My f150 has 330,000 on it still running fine
Dale - Thanks for sharing your experience!
I have seen lots of vehicles (mostly trucks/SUVs) with the 4.6l that did have triton badging. example: my daily driver, 100% stock
Noah - Thanks for sharing this insight.
How do I know if it’s a 2 v or 3 v? 2005 F150 4.6L
The 3v also came with "aluminum" valve covers.
is the oil pump issue like the RBs?
M - Are you referencing the Nissan RBs?
The biggest flaw is Ford Engineers! For example the heater core. You can see it from the engine bay(at least the piping). It would have been a no brainer to make it come out from that side. But no lets make it so you have to drop the steering wheel and dash. And other other fronts. Ford stopped making a replacement OEM intake manifold for the Crown Vic.. THANKS FORD. AND THEY WONDER WHY THEY HAD A 24% DECREESE IN SALES LAST YEAR...
J - Unfortunately, they just don't make them like they used to..
Can you replace the 4.6 V8 plastic intake manifold with a aluminum aftermarket one? Im wanting to buy this low mileage 2000 4.6 F-150
M - This is certainly possible.
Everyone says dont put Anti-seize plugs.... especially the 4.6 because they already have a problem with the plugs flying out
Ford says to use a little bit of antiseize but it really doesn't fix the problem.
J - Sounds like you might have quite a few problems.. Have you taken it to a shop?
Lol
Kelly - Thanks for adding this insight. We couldn't agree more!
Just torque the plugs to 20 foot pounds on the 4.6 L Gen 2👍
F - Thanks for adding this insight!
4-valve was also used in the Lincoln Aviator 2003-2006
T - Thanks for the insight!
A - Are you experiencing any drivability concerns?
Steven - Thanks for sharing your experience! These can be hit or miss, depending on maintenance. Sounds like you keep up with yours very well.
Hell, it hauled around three entire beds worth of mulch today, putting me within 100-200 pounds of max payload capacity, and it still ran great and was responsive (obviously in terms of a vehicle at its limit)
Oh yea. It's at about 150k miles. As far as I know, the only issue it's ever had was some brake line thing that was just dumb luck. And didn't even cost enough to care about remembering
Dude. It is in fact a common issue. Just because yours didn’t have a problem certainly does not mean that it’s not common.
Got a 91 lincoln.... Still f'n goin'! Easy engine to work on and maintain. Like driving a sofa.
I just bought a 09 ford mustang with 4.6L 3v that’s more than “lightly modified
-Msi coils
-24lb injectors
-K&N intake
-Bbk long tube headers/ X pipe
- 3.73 gears
and I knew that something was wrong with the timing because it wouldn’t idle smoothly and kept fluctuating
A couple days ago the oil pressure indicator “low oil pressure” came on but only when I’m at stops (signs or lights)
I don’t know what it could be but I just parked the car and bought new timing kit and high volume pump because I don’t want to grenade my “new to me” car
Kourt - Sounds like a good build. Keep us updated on this!
@@8020Media so here’s the update
I installed a new belt/belt tensioner for the car and new fuel filter for the car
I then took it to the shop for the timing and oil pump and it will be done by December 4th
They told that a engine swap would be needed because the current one has alot of mileage (150k) and they think the car was neglected (found sludge in the valves)
I told them I would consider it but I would like to keep the engine in the car for now until I can source a new one
I talks to a couple local mechanics and my friend who’s a mechanical engineer and they said to through in Diesel fully synthetic oil in it
Apparently they’re is a lot of additives and cleaners in it that will help prolong the life of the engine plus zinc for the internals
As of right now the car is still running and driving and no noise like rod knock can be heard from the engine
Kourtnee - Thanks for the update! An engine swap seems quite bold. You should be able to get plenty more miles out of it.
The 2 value lasted untill 2011 with the last cats having them being a crown victoria, muercury grand marquis and lincoln town car.
Ian - Thanks for the insight!
I own a 2009 grand marquis Ls and its got 218,000...now I've replaced 2 coils, now 3 months later more hesitation, but it won't code..when i crank it up i get a metal to metal sound for about 2 seconds and the oil level is full??
Camshaft phasers are probably worn out. Check out the FordTechMakeuloco UA-cam channel for videos on what is wrong & how to fix it. IF that is the problem, you must have it repaired or the engine will be destroyed. @@Russell-pe8xn
Not sure if you still look at these comment, but I have an 04 f150 4.6 2V and there’s a very rapid and light tap coming from top end but goes away after you rev up the truck any ideas what it could be?
T - We certainly check comments so we can help out! Check your intake manifold bolts or timing chain.
The E-series vans only get the 2 valves right?
D - Most, yes.
Funny. In my experience he covered everything bullet proof with Thunderbird 2v 4.6
Thanks for the feedback! Do you still have the Thunderbird? If so, how's it holding up?
@@8020Media it was mint when I had it to when I sold to a car friend. Runs better than purchased and sold.
These cars need replacement on a lot of general things after 20 years or so would grant. Don't slack it can be dangerous of if your short on cash make you lose the car.

I have a 2003 4.6 f150, if I re build my motor can I replicate a mustang motor?
J - I suppose you could.
are this the same problems whit the v10?
E - Not quite.
The 4.6 was most certainly called the Triton. I have a ‘99 E-150 with a 4.6 and V8 Triton badges on the front fenders.

2002 f150 320,000 miles. Have used castrol 5w20 conventional oil since new, which I can’t find anymore. Will it effect anything if I have to switch to motorcraft synthetic blend?
Larry - This shouldn't cause any harm, especially since it sounds like you've been on top of maintenance. 320k miles is awesome!
I recently bought a '99 Lariat, 4.6 with an aluminum intake. Was that swapped on or could it have come with that? The truck has only 55K miles.
N - Aluminum intake manifold or intake?
@@8020Media intake manifold.

Great video that addressed many of my questions. I'm currently looking at a 2009 Escape Sport-Trac "Adrenalin" for sale. Love the looks but having had a King Ranch with a 5.4 I'm well aware of the timing chain problems but I heard they could go just over 200,000 km before it was wise to replace. What would a ballpark cost be to replace a timing chain in the 4.6? Thanks
R - Thanks for the feedback! We've seen cost be in the ballpark of $1,000-$1,500, but with prices increasing on everything, it's difficult to give a concrete answer here.
@@8020Media Thanks for the comeback
