You did the full timing, oil pump, roller followers on my 04'. Amongst other things over the last few years. 50k miles after the timing, truck still runs perfect. Thank you for being so good at what you do!
How much was all that work? Mine is starting to make funny noises!
My 2010 Ford F150 making a noise like this. Wonder what cost of timing job
Where is he located
The Melling high volume oil pump makes a big difference....and it's not expensive
Chicago@@TheChrismigz222
I bought a 2004 Lariat for $500 because "it needed a new motor" and fixed the motor following FTM's videos. I can't thank him enough.
I just got 2004 lariat super cheap zero rust
I'm in the middle of a timing job on my 2005 5.4 3v with 240k miles. This is the first time its been done. I'm hoping for another 100k. Thank you for your dedication on educating everyone on this engine.
My 04 FX4 is sitting at 463,000kms and still going strong. Full timing was done around 220,000kms so you should have no issues getting another 200,000 miles out of your engine as long as you run full synthetic 5W30 P platinum high mileage and change every 5k miles or so 🙂
@@Powerstroke431 thanks for that tip. I’m buying my uncle’s 2008. He’s taken good care of it, only 135,000 miles. He only wants $4k, so I couldn’t turn it down. Have you done any upgrades such as oil pump? I want to address the weak points before I start driving it.
@Orange Manok no, oil pump is still stock. Install an external oil pressure gauge and if your hot idle oil psi is below 20 then upgrade, but if around 20 the engine should be fine as long as you use full synthetic 5w30, use motorcraft oil filters and change both every 5k miles.
@SaltLife you couldn't be more wrong....nor do I live or drive in a cold climate. I trust his expertise and my truck runs just fine... Everyone's receipe isn't the same. I truly expect another 200,000 from this engine!
@@orangemanok5800 Brian has recommended if/when you do the timing etc. to upgrade to a high volume oil pump. Perhaps he has changed his thinking on this but IDTS. He has a video to this effect somewhere on his channel. If he sees this maybe he'll link that. IMHO the cost for a high volume pump isn't that much more than a regular one so why not? If you take care of it you'll get a ton of miles from the engine. GL...nice of your uncle to give you a deal:).
Brian your dedication is admirable, still making videos on the 5.4 after all these years
There are so many still on the road. I have 2014 exp with 190k burns no oil no noises. Only replaced belts and pulleys
I mean why wouldn't he? It's still paying the bills haha
I still have my 2004 with 370,000 miles. Replaced engine at 240,000 due to timing chain Rapid Unplanned Disassembly.
Great channel.
@@jasonlarsen3515 ditto! 2011 Navigator here w/140k miles. Change the oil every 3-4k and runs like a champ. Best value car I’ve owned will keep running it more reliable than 90% of the turbo made junk out there today
It’s because Ford produced millions of these engines since o3-04.
I got my 06 Lariat F150 for cheap because the owner said it needed a engine. With his 4 part 5.4 3V Timing videos I replaced everything with Ford updated parts and Melling M360 HV oil pump and the truck runs perfect. I ran into the guy I bought from and he asked me how much for the replacement engine and I said I didn't replace it. I just a Full Timing job and new oil pump and he just shook his head in disgust. And said he'll never go to that shop again. Thank you Brian for all your Ford input.
Your community is lucky to have you as their mechanic. From Deep South Texas.
Hole the line...i mean border lol
I’ve had phaser”knock” for several years now on my 2006 Lariat with 270,000 miles. I think have detected the second sound as you said easing along in a drive thru. It’s a long trip from southwest Alabama to your place Brian. I guess I need to find a local guy that has some semblance of your knowledge and ability. Thanks for the info as always.
Follow his series of posted videos on this engine. They’re very insightful regarding using the Melling oil pump and OEM parts. We just did one in our shop with 205k. Owner was very happy with results and an extended life for his ‘09 F-150

@@jamram9924 Thanks. I’ve watched every video he’s ever made period, not just those on the 5.4 3v. I went to 5W30 years before I found his channel. Biding my time on when and what to do. I have a local mechanic who is a former Ford dealership guy and I’m going to confer with him.
So happy we are getting these videos on the 5.4 3V still. My 2010 is at 257,000km with lots of short trips since I work 8km from home. Parts are still original and engine is running perfect and quiet. Think this summer I will replace the rocker followers to the new ones with the smaller hole. Don’t want to push my luck.
The problems only occur in 2004-2008 models. I think 2009+ are better engines.
Dude I’m shaking my head in agreement with you like we talking in person. Great camera interaction😂
I want to thank you sincerely for your help from the complete walk through videos you posted as I just completed the timing rebuilt. All new components including oil pump upgrade and all new oem valve train components. Adjusters, followers fasers, selinoids, plugs, coils ,chains, guides and chains. It was a real task but well worth it. You are a real gem and I really appreciate you. Started it up this morning and sounds like a brand new engine. More oil pressure, power and responsiveness.
Thank You Soo much.
Leon Wellwood
There is science behind auto repair, not just freaking changing parts and calling ourselves mechanics. Great video and well explained. I am ford all the way
My 06 is still going strong, thank you Brian for all the informative videos, I have gained substantial knowledge about this engine, and can be aware of issues before they become costly. (specifically..more costly than they have to be)
How many miles you got on yours? I've got an 06 as well
Because of your channel I have steered completely clear of these 5.4 3 valve Triton engines/F-150 when I've had several opportunities to buy them on the cheap.......
Great choice
That's too bad. Did you see the video he just posted last week? Properly cared for these engines will last 300k--400k without any major issues barring the guides and timing stuff that he's outlined need repaired.
It's a shame there isn't more techs like you, we could use you on the Gulf Coast, for sure.
Thanks!
Thanks to you, just completed the full timing job on my 07 f150. Ford everything , except Melling oil pump. Also did all lash adjusters & all followers. Also p/s pump & hoses, intermediate steering shaft. 192,000 miles & everything was original. Going for the long haul! Was not cheap, but w prices these days, I'm keeping it going! Thank you again! Btw, been using Mobil 1, 0w40 for the last 75k, and this engine loves it!
0W40? that works? my 04 Lariat is at 237,000 miles... and I live in the high desert in So CA. think that would work??
@@Butchcub75 definitely!
U should have done oil pump aswell
I misspoke, didn't do ford oil pump, replaced w melling as per Brian's advice. Sorry for confision
@jimhagenford79 that's what I put in melling hv oil pump running 80psi
I've been saying this for years. My wife says people don't want to know the details why their engine is making a noise. They just want it fixed. I'd say 95% of owners that go to the dealer or another shop instantly get told they need a new engine. I've lost business from telling people it just needs a timing set and an hv oil pump because they've been convinced by the other 3 shops that the engine is bad. I get told I don't know what I'm doing and no way I'm working on their vehicle. Just irritating when I hear someone say they spent $8k plus getting a new engine. Wish I could convince people to hand over money like that.
A couple of years ago, doing 5.4 3v timing jobs was my bread and butter. I still have several sitting that just need a timing set, from the owners insisting on a new engine. Shops don't have mechanics with experience to know what the issue is, so they just say needs a new engine. And shops go with the flow with other shops to make more money. Meaning, when a customer says the other shop said they need an engine, they say yep, it does.
I believe the 5.4 3v got a bad reputation for a few reasons. One, lack of maintenance or improper maintenance. Two, mechanics/shops shaking their head and saying needs a new engine. Three, people hearing stories about how bad their engine is.
Dude 5.4 3 valve is a horrible engine. MACK says so himself in a lot of these videos
@Johnson Bobo The 5.4 3v may be worse than other Ford engines in some opinions, but every one of them I've had has lasted over 200k. I can't say that for other engine brands. If they are properly maintained, they usually give a full service life. I don't work on just Fords. I work on anything that comes in the door, and that includes Dodge, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, BMW, VW, Peterbuilt, Cat, etc. Also Briggs and straton, tao tao, and anything else.
With all the hauling I do, the engine that caused the least issue was the 5.4 3v. In the military, I worked on mainly diesels, and I'd much rather work on a 3v than pretty much any other engine. To me, they are easy and not complicated at all. I never said he is wrong. I just know I use to do timing sets on them pretty often for customers, and everyone has told me they didn't have any other issues other than the filter adapter leaking, which was an easy fix also.
A timing set doesn't make an engine the worst one out there. And Ford is having issues with timing components just like every other manufacturer is. Timing jobs are apart of maintenance. I still have several 3v's myself that run fine with over 240k miles. I can't say that for anything else I've owned, and I currently have over a dozen personal vehicles of different makes sitting here.
Very well explained video! A lot more people need to see this. So many people in the world are just clueless...
I just bought an 06, and it has these exact noises, along with trying to die at low rpm after it's hot. Runs like a champ for like 10 miles, then as soon as it heats up, dies if I lift foot off the pedal. I just ordered all the parts Brian advised, will try to do this job this week.
My 2009 ford Lincoln platinum started doing that at 80k. I only have 132k as today. It would come on and off that noise and I had the motor 2 years ago in 2020 chemically flushed and cleaned inside out without taking it apart and then put new oil witch they never found any metal shavings or anything and the noise has been gone since then. I do oil changes every 3000k or every 4 months. It is the 5.4 - 3V as well. Love your videos. No one my town wants to put hands on them and the dealers keep giving no answers and just want trades done. Sick and tired of them. I may just have to do all the work my self and just change everything as I go. The truck has treated me great for all these years beside that noise for a while.
Brian, you're the guru of the 5.4 3 valve... thanks for helping us!
Good morning Brian has usual always great watching your video and learning in the process.Peace n Love bro ..
Thanks for these videos. It really helps to explain the things that I need to look out for with our truck! I believe we have a little of that phaser knock going on with ours but it’s nice to know that I don’t need to be horribly concerned about it. Thankfully we got an extended warranty with ours that specifically covers the timing system. We are at 95k miles and our warranty is good for another 40k miles or 4 years. We got a second car for commuting too so it’s most likely gonna go the full 4 years. God Bless!
Your the best mechanic to go though the time to explain everything in complete detail knowing the time it takes to own a shop I Appreciate it
This guy knows his stuff
Getting ready to start working on the engine of my '08 f150 5 .4 60th anniversary and your vids have helped me make a list of what needs to be done
Thank you Brian! Your videos are gold and your simplified explanations are amazing. God bless you.
Makes me glad I got a 5L in my 2012 F-150. Keep up the good work, thanks much.
this guy is great!! used his videos with great results!!! on my 07 Navigator
Always love and appreciate these 5.4 videos. Thanks for always making them for us!
I have an 09 with only 58K miles. My truck makes rough idle/knocking sound on occasion. It seems like it's always after pulling my utility trailer (dirt bikes) and as I'm backing up or slowly pulling forward to park. Sounds like having a hot engine could be the issue. Appreciate the video... new sub!
That's definitely the issue aswell as timing chain
Your info relived stress about my truck and was very informative on what to look for.
Thankyou
My 2006 F250 has 103,000 miles, just did the VCT solenoids. It’s running awesome and sounds better 🎉🔧🇺🇸👍
Is it more than one solenoid?
@ just passenger side was noisy , but just do both sides. It’s a quick easy job.
@@alvinmendaros dumb question but it's the same part right? So I just need 2 of the same solenoids? No difference in the one on the left vs the one on the right?
I rarely see the 5.4 roll into my bay anymore. The area you live in must be vastly different than mine. Ill definitely say you have that engine figured out.
Im not sure i understand your response. Im a dealer tech in ohio. Enjoybyour videos.
it's funny, I rarely see videos on the older 2 valve tritons except for sparkplug threads. I'm hanging on to my old 2 valve for as ling as it will run....
Brian , I see your channel has grown now to an amazing 731K subscribers ……… me being one of them !
It Discovery’s and Motor Trend loss that they haven’t approached you to air your presentations on a larger platform.
Their Loss !
Enjoy all you do, wish I was closer to the shop !
On another note I have 2 ford engines a 1965 289 & a 2003 Mustang Gt 4.6 L
Would like your autograph on the valve covers !
Wow I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out this issue and I was giving up I truly love is man and his videos.
I have the warm Idol tick. Only 60k on the odometer. Done the complete timing with up graded parts and mellings 340 hv pump. None of my parts had any noticeable wear so I think it was all for naught. Super clean engine so I think it’s the exhaust manifold. I’m still happy I did the work myself on it. I does idol smoother. But the noise is still there. I’ll now drive it till it drops and ignore the noise. These 5.4s are not as bad as they say. I’ll take one over a multi displacement engine . Possibly a turbo as well.
Hey FordTechMakuloco ! -Just dropping in this youtube post of yours to say thanks for your videos on the ford escape hybrid, which I own; saved me a lot of frustration and work on my end. I'm not a big you tube watcher so wont subscribe; but cannot thank you enough for your ford escape hybrid videos !
I almost had a sigh of relief when you said phaser knock wasnt that big of a deal but then the oscillation thing got me, T_T, ive definitely got that and a bit of chain slap on startup but only at times not every start up. Its gonna be a hot minute i can not afford this repair, just gotta hope and pray this truck lasts since ive got nothing else to drive lool....
@TBuilds888 knock on wood still going, wheel bearing is about to eat the dirt tho.
You gotta another subscriber have been trying to figure out what this was on my 98 ford lariat
Brian, Thanks for the video on replacing the Ford Escape tone ring. The instructions were easy to follow.
Thanks for your videos. You are very helpful
what is your expert opinion on phaser lockout kits?
with new high flow oil pump
This is exactly what going on with my 08 5.4 F-150. When it warms up, at idle it has that slight knocking noise, and only when its warm. . It is annoying but its good to hear it s not necessarily the end of the world. lol
Great video 👌🏾
Keep it Brian, I am a big fan of your videos
I just recently picked up a 04 f150 lariat for cheap because the owner was told it needed an engine by the local Ford place when it just needed a timing job and some new lifters and a really good cleaning
Excellence personified excellent diagnosis expert Mechanic
I have 5.4 triton 2007 and again im going to get the same engine if my engine fails because of you makuloco, keep enlightened this guys about this engine it's good engine for me i work in construction 🚧 you know what I mean!!
Excellent. Thanks from a Ford customer
I’m glad I found your video’s...there very helpful. I’m a Audi VW mechanic that’s considering doing a timing chain job for my neighbor lady. I’m on the fence about taking on this job cause I’m not sure what the total labor time’s are&she’s a single mom that doesn’t have extra money to spend. Please lmk a aprox labor time&what brand of timing kit you use. I really appreciate your time&video’s. Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽
Thank you so much for your videos and taking the time to explain things. I wish you were closer I would love to have you listen to my truck. 09 F250 with 153K automatic. Only at hot idle. I didn't learn from the last F350 with 218K on it, it had phaser issues which I solved by installing new ones with the lock outs. This one may be headed the same way before I send it to sale.
Super smart, articulate, thorough, master of his craft. A rare breed.
I've been watching a few of your old videos' from 8 years ago. one on coolant system bleed and the other abs issues on 2008 fusion
you havent aged at all. i got grey lol. great info thank you.
Hey man! Good morning and thumbs UP!
I sure wish I lived near you & your shop!!!
I had a 2006 FX4 that I had the dealer do a cam phaser job when I bought the used truck. We split the cost. My current 07 XLT doesn't seem to need this at 146K. So far so good.
Ive just replaced the lifters on my (AUS)Ford Falcon 5.4 3v thinking the knock was coming from the front 2 cylinders on the right (drivers side here in oz). Cams out and replaced them all. The old ones were very loose with no spring pressure as opposed to the new ones which were very hard to compress...............Still have the same knock...... Phasers and oil pump next i guess but cant buy oem parts anywhere in Australia and Amazon are sold out...Not sure where to get a reliable timing kit from. 5.4 3v isnt very common here. Great work Brian 👍
I'm in the same boat chasing OEM parts for my ba falcon
Thanks.exactly the same noise my 2008 f150 makes only when driving slow especially during rush hour.not in the morning
Thank you for all of the information on the 5.4. I wish you were in my neighborhood. You'd be my mechanic!
You mentioned you have a video on stalling out. Could you help to find that video. I think this may be my issue. You do such a great job and I like to watch your channel. Thanks for your great content. Keep up the great work you do.
Mine is doing the exact same thing. No problems whatsoever. Then driving about 35 mins to an hr the engine just dies and won't restart for 5 minutes or so
I would like to see that video also. Mine is doing the same thing. I would like to know what repairs are required.
I have an '06 F-150 5.4 Triton 3 valve 200,000 mi I've been running 2050 for the last $150,000 mi year round and I don't have any of these problems full synthetic by the way it's purring.
I have fixed so many of these engines along with chevy dod systems it's crazy
This is the single most helpful diagnostic video I've seen yet. And you describe and show the sounds exactly. My 08 5.4 with 280k miles is making those exact noises, especially in the summer. I'm in the process of getting enough parts together to build a longblock to replace my engine using the links you have provided in several other of your videos.
I have two questions if you'd be willing to answer with your opinion.
1. In a completely fresh engine with the melling pump, do you still recommend the 5w30 oil?
And 2. Do you have a recommended source for new, bare, head castings with the 12mm plugs? You do a great job helping so many of us out. Thank you!
Any updates on your project?
@yiction Got the shortblock assembled. It's. 030 over, had to go .010 under on the crank to get good bearing clearances. Have Comp xe253 cams for it, and went with new, aftermarket bare head castings off ebay. I ordered the full timing kit recommended by Fordtechmakuloco along with the updated roller followers. Still have to assemble the top end yet though.
I guess they say "Ahhh, it's just my truck going through a phase"...LOL 🙂
Car Wizard should watch this, he's of the opinion every 5.4 3v needs to be replaced.
He annoys me. Seems arrogant
Well I'll be purchasing a 5.4 with blown head gaskets soon. I'll swap my heads onto it since my block is trash. I'm hoping all the years of the 3v are the same and I'll have no issues.
Thank you Brian
Having the full monty timing/oil pump/followers and lifters done on my new to me '04 in a week. Truck was free, so may as well make it last!
Thank you , I have a question about setting the timing code or misfire?
In addition to my previous post, my engine has 235,000 miles and the oil and filter changes have been done faithfully.
So long story short if I replace that cam phaser will this alleviate the problem?
Your channel is great and helped me out so many times. Was wondering what a blown lifter was like. Doing a complete rebuild and have two lifters that are not priming and not sure if I should just replace all or just the two. I know, if I have it apart, I should just replace them all. The old parts cannon gets pretty expensive though when set to full auto. Lol.
Good video. Of course having a good scan tool so watch your timing PID’s is a good way to back up your diagnosis. Guess if you get to the point where a high volume pump is needed looking at cam journals and crank end float is key before you put the wedding ring on it.
Great video can you tell me what type of scanner you use
Ford IDS
Thanks for showing us this
Enjoyed the video, well done.
On another note, I have an 09 f150 4.6l , and my tpms is faulting, can this be programmed out of existence or am I stuck repairing the sensor problem Thanks. Howie
It can be programmed out, but a ford dealership will never do it. ( liability and breaking fed law ).
You can get 4 sensors from Bezos for 60$ ( MoreSensor is the brand I used ).
I bought a module a couple years ago, turned it on and threw it in my glove box. My TPMS light has been off ever since. I can't remember the exact name and Somebody drove my car today sorry. Just search "TPMS bypass" it's a small black box with a blue label
Thank you so much 🏁🏁🏁👍.
This was a dam good video thanks and God bless you and your family
Great info as always! Thanks Brian!
Outstanding subject knowledge. Thank you. I think I've both noises. Not sure if it is phaser knock or bad followers. Really have the oscillation. Goes away if RPM's are raised, returns as it approaches idle. Need to pop the truck to neutral and rev the engine at traffic lights. You don't tell us the solution. Is it a phaser failure, solenoid failure or an oil pressure failure? Add a Melling oil pump and 5w30 solves the problem?
I am very glad I do not have phasers or tire pressure monitors. 2005 5.4 E350!
Thank you for this information.
thank you for the tips
Hey Brian, your voice sounds good. Stay well!
My 2007 F-150 5.4 has always had the phaser oscillation noise since I bought it with just over 40k. I've had an oil pressure gauge on it for years now and when it is "oscillating", the gauge shows a steady 40 PSI. In response to you saying it's because of a low oil pressure issue, I think that's strange because if that were true (in the case of my truck at least), I'd think it'd be a lot lower than that.
Thank you for all the great videos on the 5.4. I've referenced your videos countless times. Do you have any buddy's that work on Ford out here in Colorado?
Good mechanics are hard to find.
I have been trying to find a mechanic like you here in Arizona. I'm looking to replace my engine soon. I'm currently at 399206 mile on the original engine and transmission. Everything is still all stock and only normal wear and tear maintenance have been performed.
Thanks for this info! Great video!
Hey
FordTechMakuloco , great stuff . Have you come across one of these 5.4 l 3 valve engines with p0420 , can't get engine light to go out or this code to go away. The cat's & o2sensors replaced . Fuel trims maxed out minus on bank one but bank 2 is normal. The engine light will go out at times on long trips. Had it to a very reputable shop here an they can't get it to go away permanently. ?
You might have an exhaust leak throwing of your o2 readings. After I replaced my manifolds the p0420 never came back
That makes sense since the engine oil will be at a low viscosity when the engine is at operating temperature. 🐺🔧
I have a 07 F-150 Harley Davidson with one of the 711 made with the Saleen supercharger option. 86k on the clock, only 10k from when I bought it coming up on 4 Y. A. Any added precautions with the super charger. I am so damn afraid of the valve train and phasers. I live way to far away from you but mass respecs. I run Royal Purple 10w/40 high street performance full syn. I changed ALL the fluids when I bought including Saleen super charger oil. light darkening when drained. Aux. Trans cooler and after cooler. All the fluids is my standard on used. I did plugs and coils. front suspension.
Replaced all the timing components, cams, rockers, rollers, pump, and the rest.
On occasion at a stop idle drops to 600 and engine starts running rough and does. I found when I replaced cams the previous owner mixed up the cam top clamps. I think I have a oil pressure issue. I changed the oil to the 5/40 . That resolved the issue. Am I going to be ok to run that oil from here out?
I've had my 2012 Expedition KR for 13 months and it now has 46,500 miles. 5k miles a year is the most we'll drive it, but I still change the oil twice a year with 5W30 full synthetic. So far the engine sounds good. Can I swap the 5.4 with a 6.2 for more power and would it be an easy swap? I think both engines line up with the 6R80 transmission.
My 09 has the same knock but the truck shakes normally coming to a light. If you give it a slight Rev about 1500 1800 rpm it will stop n is fine maybe for a day or next time I let off. Some days it never does it some days very time I let off the gas. No start up knock it has me confused.
It's about time I've been searching the internet for a video about this problem for three years since I bought my truck couldn't find anything close to what issue is I thought it was the transmission
so if I have the second of these (stumbling at low rpm / high load) with some noise and ticking at start up... is that more likely solved by a high volume oil pump to get better pressure at low rpm, or more like a timing job needed? TIA
Hello, what do you think/opinion on phaser lock out ? Thanks, Greg.
Thanks Brian.
