    The problem with the Leafs core 4 is this: they're all overpayed...Nylander is payed a million, 2 million more than players that are way better and have been winning cups. Tavares is not worth 11 million. Heck, Matthews is maybe worth it and Marner well, his first contract was a great pressure job and now he wants a raise...nobody else will give him as much as the bunch of buffoons running this team...no one. Unfortunately for Marner I sort of doubt he even gets a pay raise on his new contract next year (whether with the Leafs or another team). Vegas, Tampa, Col and Fla have shown how to structure a roster cap wise to win cups. His willingness to sign another contract for less that $12M AAV will dictate if he gets traded.

    One thing that always comes up in my mind when discussing the Leafs is the simple fact that in playoffs, you have to want it more. I’m sorry, I don’t believe enough of these guys want to win. Our bottom lines get exsposed by every team and our 12 Million dollar cap hitters get injured in the playoffs now your out 3 impact players at 4 million in the lineup behind Matthews and Nylander.

    IF Marner will sign for the Nylander contract (8 years & 11.5M), I would definitely considering doing that deal. If he demands more, then I think you have to move on. And Tavares needs to drop to an amount we are comfortable putting on the third line or he won't be here. I'm thinking the long term, low AAV. Basically try to Stamkos him and if he walks over it, then we need to be prepared for that.

      You can't also just say instead of paying Marner 12 you could have these 3 players for 4 each and then choose some of the biggest contract steals in the league. That's like saying well Colorado instead of paying Mackinnon 13mill is better off paying Draisaitl (7.5) Bedard (950,000) Lafreniere (2.5) L. Thompson (766,000) and a league min role player. Like yeah of course any team would rather pay that, but that's because all these players play way above their contract value. If you're making this hypothetical Marner scenario actually pick players that are worth their 4 million dollar cap hits. Which I still think the leafs are better off doing, just don't pretend like finding players that play at Oettinger's/Bourchad's level for 4 million is the norm.

How many times has he scored series winning goals that you should be scoring for 11 million dollars? Bottom line is y'all don't want a winner. You just want a regular season team that puts up empty numbers and loses in round 1 (or gets lucky enough to lose in round 2) every year. If you don't want that, then tell me how keeping a core that has the same number of 2nd round playoff GAME wins as losses to their own AHL Zamboni driver in almost a decade together is gonna somehow work differently than it has before. Until you prove it to me in a way that actually makes sense with reality, you don't want a winner. Most expensive tickets in hockey can't buy you passion, apparently.

    But sometimes Bob Ogden is the guy you need, and then he is worth the contract. So I would probably answer Scottys question with "what sort of players does the team need?". Sometimes you dont need particularly expensive players because they are a good fit for the teams style of play, sometimes you need to pay for quality players.
    If I were Torontos management I would probably trade Bob Ogden, not because he is bad or anything but because there are bigger holes to fill elsewhere.

    I really don't see the point in what Steve is doing with the Bob Ogden crap. Why take the name out of it? That's not how this works. You have to look at all the objective truth in a situation like this.
    I actually agree that Marner needs to go. But pretending his name is something else doesn't do anything to help your case.
    Fictionalizing a situation that exists in reality does literally nothing. You just sound pompous.

    if marner stays, you have two first line right wingers making somewhere in the range of 22-25 million per year. you dont need marner. 2 players at 6-7 million each is way better. bundle him with liligren, get a high end right shot D and a third line centre

    I think he’ll be in the 20 to 25 goal range this year, 22 if you need an exact number
    He’s got at least 2 more full seasons to catch Gretzky’s record (41 behind atm) and I think he’ll beat it
    But I think it’ll take him until after trade deadline of that last yr to do it. If not possibly be still under 10 goals short of it.
    If he’s less than 10 goals away I expect he’ll sign a cheap extension with the idea he’ll play 1 final season to beat that record

    If Matthews is so good, why does he need to play with a $12M playmaker? Likewise, the same with Nylander. Look at what the Pens did with Crosby and Malkin. Crosby played with guys like Dupuis, Kunitz, and Rust. Guentzel was only a rookie when they won their last Cup. If they pay Bob Ogden $12M, then he should be capable of making other players around him better similar to how Hyman and Nuge are much better playing with McDavid. I also look at what Mackinnon did with Drouin last year. It also helps that Rantanen is on his line, but Mack is the biggest reason for Drouin's success last year.
    If they get rid of Bob Ogden, are Matthews and Nylander capable of making other guys better like Crosby/Malkin and McDavid/Draisaitl? If both are worth over $11M, then you don't need a $12M playmaker to compliment either. They should still be able to produce if the Leafs go after two players worth $6M each, or one player worth $8M and another worth $4M.

    I don't think he gets the record this year but Ovi will be close enough that this time next off season he can formally announce his final farewell tour and he'll pass the record in November 2025 during his final season. He'll retire as the only 900 player.
    I think somewhere around 25 goals each of these next 2 seasons is right. The team around him is better which will rely on him less. They want each of these guys scoring 20 goals up and down the roster instead of counting on a 39 year old Ovechkin to score 50 each season.

Knoblauch was an unknown to most but he brought coaching elements to the Oilers that Woodcroft could never tap into. Looking at the Leafs, Keefe was not a good playoff coach, period! Berube does not put up with nonsense and makes sure his whole roster is committed to playing good team defense! The culture will change in that Leafs locker room with Berube, who I might add has Cup Final experience as a coach! I think Berube can change the team culture that we haven't seen since Pat Quinn coached the Leafs!

I don't even think the management is dumb like Steve says I think they're clasping on straw to make this work. I think in their perspective theyve come close too many times to look for a new plan. Bc whether we like it or not, getting rid of Marner might make us wind up looking for a whole new rebuild.

      The Leafs would still be solid even without Marner, why would they rebuild ???

They have almost nothing.

    • @valdizos
      @valdizos Місяць тому

      We can't just look at the short term, theres a long term to look at. I wouldnt be surprised if they trade Bob next year, bc Tavares is done next year. But running it back with a few tweaks actually really makes sense.

    • @alexmouton1010
      @alexmouton1010 Місяць тому +1

      @@valdizos suggesting a total rebuild because they traded one guy and still have a bunch of studs doesn't make much sense. This is also suggesting they get completely fleeced in a trade. Marner can still walk for nothing. Better hope they win it this year.
      They've tweaked it for years, and got some great performances from players they couldn't keep. Also, picking them up at the deadline isn't a great cost saving measure. And it doesn't matter if they still fail every year. Look how much Vegas paid for Alexander Holtz, or what they sold Logan Thompson for...
      I'm betting Tavares stays on a hometown discount. That'll free up some money, yes, but doesn't change anything this year.
      The best hope the Leafs have this year is that Tanev's arrival stabilizes the defence, and Woll stays healthy. It'll take another 82 games before we really find out.
      Just so we're clear, I'm in the rival camp being a Habs fan. I've actually found myself cheering the Leafs on in recent times. Not in 2021, although TML should have destroyed the Habs - defeat had been accepted before the series even started. That never happens against Toronto or Boston.
