4:55 "Will Smith who was a fifth overall pick......William Eklund, or was he the fifth overall pick? Maybe they both were." The Sharks have never selected fifth overall. Smith was fourth, Eklund was seventh.
🤓
So, on average, he's almost right. Within 10%.
I live in Milwaukee and am a Sharks fan and have watched Asky for last 2 seasons, and can confidently say this is the best move they’ve made in years. Selfishly, I’ll miss getting to watch him in person on the Admirals but I’m so excited for the Sharks going forward and am happy to see him succeed.
Loved Asky the last two years. I wish him well.
Grier did a real good job with this one.
As a Sharks fan, I love this trade. But, it's worth pointing out that if Trotz made this deal with Grier it has to have been the best or one of the best offers. So if the return is disappointing, then tell the other GMs to offer more? Trotz can only get what he's offered, similar to what Grier got back for Meier, and Hertl, and Karlsson. We as fans can always feel that a player may be worth more than what a given deal yields, but the GMs can only go off of what is being offered. And, while Askarov may have yielded more in theory at the deadline, would he really have yielded more if he doesn't play much before then? Or plays worse than he did the last 2 years? Who knows.
Trotz shopped him for a year so he could have gotten more eventually if the trade request wasn’t made public. Power to the worker!
Signing Scott Wedgewood is def what caused this, with Askaraov being blocked for 2 years now. I don't understand why they wouldnt deal him at the draft. Trotz already made up in his mind that Askarov wasnt going to be in the NHL. Wedgewood is a solid backup but not someone you NEEDED to get. This is just poor asset management by Nashville. Loved their other moves they made this offseason, but this one is a giant avoidable L.
@@voightkampffchamp Yea Trotz definitely doesnt see him as part of the team. I find it so insane that the second he joined, the first piece of news coming out of there was him wanting to trade Askarov. I'd want out too if my boss clearly doesn't want me.
Hated to Askarov go but Barry wasn't going to send him to Preds so now is his change to play in the NHL
SJ future a few years ago went from going nowhere to being top tier prospect pool.
How????

As THG has said many times: people always expect greater returns for goalies in trades than is ever the case.
Exactly...even what Calgary got for an established goalie like Markstrom wasn't that much. A 1st round pick (which could also be in the 20s) and Bahl. Everybody wants to have a good goalie, but nobody wants to give up much for a good goalie. This is the same reason they're not typically drafted in the 1st round. I definitely think Trotz did the best he could, and most importantly, he got rid of drama before it could poison the team.
I’m still an Askarov believer as a Preds fan but there’s one thing you didn’t point out and that’s the fact that Askarov was pulled in both AHL playoff appearances and replaced long term with a more experienced goalie (although one of those times was maybe due to injury but there’s speculation about that)
He’s 22.
I feel like Nashville should've/could've got more here. This kid might be the next Vasilevskiy. Then again, he might not. Goalies are funny that way. You never know. I'm just glad he's staying in the west. The Atlantic is already stacked with elite goalies.
Magic beans!
I kind of agree with you. I would have put Askarov as backup for Sarros for 2-3 years. And when you see he's ready, Sarros will be very tradeable.
A bit like what Tampa did with Bishop when Vasy was ready.
…askarov has got to be the most overrated goalie i have seen in the last while. look at his ahl numbers… he was “ok” on an amazing admirals team.
compare him to someone like wolf, bussi or even wallstedt… they were all significantly better than him, yet nobody talks about them.
Yikes calm down 😂😂
@@sebastiencarrieres8825 Yeah, except he wants to start in the NHL so if you don't trade him - he screws off back to the KHL like Radulov. I'm ok with it.
Us sharks truthers are going feral best future in the NHL
Askorov can be the next Samsonov as well.
Still a good trade for the Sharks.
When there was talks of San Jose being interested in Askarov, I was afraid of what they would have to give up. That trade package was more underwhelming than I could ever believed in my head beforehand.
Fun little observation from today. Mitch Marner was at the Minnesota State Fair today with Justin Holl.
DEEP FRIED CHEESE YEEE HAAAAAAA
Don't post this type of news on a Leafs fan youtube channel. It's how ignorant Leafs fans start rumors.
And I spotted Matt Damon on Mars
Leafs are running it back
Hmmmmmmm
I dont think askarov necessarily wants to play in the nhl, but just wants a clear path to play. Signing saros to 8 years then wedgewood for a couple of years meant askarov was going to be an understudy for a longggg time
I believe you’re right Steve .Nashville lost this trade , would’ve thought they were going to get more
I feel like Nashville will probably move one of their first rounders at the deadline to get a forward and keep the rest of their picks to try and rebuild while still going for it. Sharks are looking like they got the most potential in the league, in 4-5 years they could be unreal
This is the best off season the sharks have ever had. A + for Money Mike
Building a true contender
Trotz said they would have wanted to wait longer to trade Askarov but the request became public. What did he expect to happen from a top goalie prospect that was clearly wanted NHL or nothing.
Ya that’s the thing especially considering he’s Russian. These guys don’t fly all the way to a different continent to play hockey in the AHL. Not when he could easily make more money back home.
Edstrom will be a really good defensive center. Don't lowball him too much.
He'll be a good depth piece. Bottom 6 reliable center. Anyone trying to pump him up more than that are deluding themselves.
@@mikebuijze129 I don't expect him to be a top 6 player, but I could see him become one of the best third line centers in the league. Think Barkov but way less points production.
Everyone who was criticizing Grier for the Hertl trade real quiet now
Grier has gotten ripped for most of his trades and yet all but the Burns one has turned out pretty dang positive. Heck even the Burns trade wasn't that bad.
Why? Cause they got a prospect goalie? I think he'll be great but goalies are a huge maybe, not worth two first round assets
Dude had the power to fleece the oilers and somehow gave up the better assets in the trade 💀
das me and im not even mad. not one bit

...but I wanted *your* take on the Laine trade!! 😂 Jokes aside, as a Montreal fan, I'm glad those Askarov rumors are put to rest. He's gonna make a great impact in SJ!
Same here, I'ld love to listen to Steves take on the Laine trade, Adam Wild is the last guy I would want to hear anything Hab related.. Jesse would have been fine as well.
I’m happy as a bruins fan lol lots of noise of you guys offersheeting sway, I don’t think you guys would because the compensation would of been a bit much, not to mention as rivals we have that respect for eachother where it’s like, we could try and take swayman and maybe Boston tries to steal Hutson, or one of your other younger prospects when there rfa status comes up. I think it was a great trade for laine, I think Montreals management can help him and as a 🇨🇦 bruins fan Montreal is a great city and they love there hockey, I think that’ll get laine going not back to that 50 goal scorer but if he can be a 35-40 guy what a steal for your guys rebuild and if he ends up being soso Kent can flip him for picks at the deadline, but I think overall was a steal for Montreal they have the cap now if they can just get him back to the player he can and should be right now. Montreal and SJ are both making big strides Montreal is close though another 1-2 years and they’ll be back in the playoffs
@@BrandonBelliveau-b2tLaine never got 50 goals in a season so yeah, he won't get back to that. The guy is injured too often. It's a risk for sure. He could get 20-30 but maybe not?
MG has been cooking the whole time. great trades. good deals. good prospects. Sharks truly exiting the rebuild at lightning speed.
need hockey again, Australia is boring this time of year
From a Nashville fan, Trotz said in his media that part of his motivation to trade him now was to get the potential drama out of the system and not be a distraction before training camp.
A trade was apparently always going to happen, just Askarov forced Trotz's hand by coming out publicly and requesting the trade and threatening to not report to the AHL if he wasn't. Also, FWIW, Askarov has been consistent in the regular season for Milwaukee, but he has lost his starters net in each of the last 2 playoff runs that Milwaukee had.
SHARKS. just waiting for Leon now…
Kinda look like Harry Potter under the stairs with that camera angle so close to the wall
Ahahah you hit an apple.
Sharks fan here. Love the trade. But, some things were not mentioned in the video, which I loved btw. The draft class of ‘25 is expected to be deep and well above average. Any 1st rounder has real value. The Golden Knights took a dump in the offseason. They will not be as competitive next year, logic would suggest. So, in the end, it might work out well for both sides. Still, this is really really good for the Sharks.
Also worth noting is Nashville now has 3 1st round picks. So, less teams to "take the guy they wanted"...assuming they don't repackage any of the picks. Honestly, I think both Trotz and Grier did well for what they wanted to accomplish. Sure, 1st round picks can be a crapshoot (the Preds just unloaded a #5 overall pick who didn't pan out)...but so can Russian goalies. But you take a swing and see what happens.
@@ghost_615 And btw, Edstrom should absolutely be a C3 when ready. Damn good player.
Sharks fan bias but Mike Greier has been cooking since the Meier deal (and looking back at it the trade doesn’t look as bad as it did at the time).
That trade didn’t look bad at the time and it sure as hell looks pretty good now with the Musty pick and Zetterlund’s development
@pharsyded and we still have that D prospect that im not even going to try and spell. Thats a massive haul now if musty does pan out
Sharks should accelerate their rebuild as they are. Good job 🦈
"Nashville Predators Trade Yaroslav Askarov To San Jose Sharks w/ Steve Dangle"
Steve, you were a sweetener in this deal?! 😉
*Cap dump
All of these trades are making me wish that we are about to see some trade trees come out from SDPN
Sharks might be good soon 😂😂
Askarov and Cellebrini ,
2 potential game changers
SQUEEEEEEE MY PAINTING IS IN THE BACKGROUND! Wait... Yaroslav who?
I think I totally agree with you, Steve. Nashville could have gotten much more for Askorov. I lke the Sharks so good for them!
Sharks baby!!
Edit speedrun... clap. Love you guys lol
I think it's a great pickup for San Jose. Aside from Adin Hill, they've been content to make their goalies a position of sacrificial lamb during the rebuild. WIth all the youth coming in, this is a great way to build a possible core for the future. Depending on draft pick they end up getting, this is possibly a steal. And from a San Jose perspective, they had this same sort of situation years ago behind Nabokov. Mikka Kiprusoff had to go, and he flourished in Calgary. Hoping Askarov can have that kind of career.
Glad to see a Sharks truther make a video about this transaction.
San Jose got Nabokov II, this is excellent
Goalies rarely get 1st round picks, and Yaro got what's in value 2 first round caliber assets (Edstrom and the pick). Considering how Yaro Askaroved out, the Preds did what they could with what little leverage they had, while ofc the Sharks are probably the winner with the high-upside asset now on their team.
He was picked 11th OA
As a Sharks fan I love thi8a trade. The Sharks are going to be scary in a couple years.
Nick Robertson + Timothy Liljegren to Seatle Kraken for Adam Larsson.
Appearantly they asked for Owen Beck from Montreal but Montreal said no
Beck is a Trevor Linden type... leadership qualities are hard to find these days.
We need forwards in our system. Hell no. Montembeault and Primeau are decent, and we have Fowler in the pipeline. We have a (now reduced) logjam on D. That's why we traded Harris for Laine and a 2nd.
I feel like Primeau would’ve had to go the other way too. Why bring in Askarov and have 3 goalies again.
Montey and primeau can adequately hold the fort for now and you’ve got one of the best goalie prospects right now anyway with Fowler
I think many are confused about the Sharks. They have been rebuilding for several years now. Now, they are done with their rebuild
goaltending : already set, forwards : already set, defense : are set in the future because of their elite d prospects
Sharks are done, now its their time to compete, starting this season, i'm predicting them top 3 division finish, buuut they are not
ready yet to compete in the playoffs
Their forward group is already play-offs quality, due to their additions (they added 8 new forwards, if you count Couture as one because he missed last season) Celebrini, Couture, Dellandrea, Goodrow, Grundström, Smith, Toffoli, Wennberg)
Granny had a career year last season, at 32, dude was a beast, no signs that he wont repeat, he still has several top 6 years in him,
their 2 other young stars Eklund and Zetterlund both had breakout seasons and are only getting better, very interesting and hungry bottom 6 forwards, who have size, strength, speed and who have skill to add some additional scoring; Dellandrea, Goodrow, Grundström, Kostin, Sturm
Their defense have crazy (young) names : (in alphabetical order) Luca Cagnoni, Sam Dickinson, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jack Thompson, Henry Thrun, HM : Pulli, Wallenius, i like a lot of their addition in Jake Walman, dude is great, with a booming cannon shot from the blue line, also likes to join rushes, his wrister is good one too, isn't dumb in his own end either, nor is he small (6 foot 2 / 220 lbs)
Theyre literally just like 3 years in the re build. Still another 3 before playoffs are even on their mind. They are not going for it this year
Yap yap yap
Wrong. We still need our RH blue chip D prospect. We’re not done at all. We’re probably still a bottom 5 team, and next season will be more competitive.
@@OhYaSure i guess its a agree to disagree thing :) - i just can't see it, not with that roster, that Sharks would be a bottom 5 team this season, it has changed so much since the beginning of last season - that d is not that weak, besides, strong goaltending will help that d
Sharks have no elite D prospects, Dickinson is the only one who has a puncher's chance of becoming a top pair D, but more likely a good top 4... Mukh's ceiling is a good top 4... They need at least a couple more elite D prospects to say they're in good shape restocking their defense pool
GMMG Master Class. Plus MG has a great personal relationship with Trotz, so im sure that helps as well.
Great analysis.
When you've got crap leverage, you get a crap return.
I appreciate you ripping into Vegas and what they do with their 1st round picks. "Vegas" is just some translation of "Vader" as in Darth Vader because that's how they treat their stars that have "aged out" after a couple years of play when Vegas becomes disinterested in them.
This is what we would call the planting of possible magnificent Trade Tree.
A little off topic, but why doesn't this EP show up as a podcast. Is it only available on UA-cam ?
This trade works really well for the sharks. They have three years to ease Askarov into the NHL and if he turns out to be as good as projected that timeline lines up perfectly for when a lot of these prospects will really start coming into their own plus whoever they pickup in the 2025 draft which will likely be top ten maybe even top five and at the end of those three years the Sharks will likely be pushing to be a playoff contender now with a franchise forward, defensemen and goalie. At that point you lock him up on a hefty contract and bam San Jose could be looking dangerous in the next 3-4 years for sure.
I really like this for the Sharks. They still gonna suck next year but Askarov is worth the risk
Nashville was a pleasant surprise last season, but i think signing even more mid 30s guys to long deals and trading away all young talent is a recipe for absolute disaster.
8:13 another fact about max friberg being drafted in 2011, was all the players that Anaheim drafted that year played games for them, which doesn't happen very often
Still waitin on the laine trade thoughts
Blackwood is pretty damn good, despite what his numbers look like. It'll be neat seeing how this season goes.
Preds bottled this from the start. Why use the #11 pick on a G when u have a stud 24 yr old G in Saros. Then with Askarov ready they re sign a now 29yr old Saros until he retires which obviously pisses Askarov off. They would've got more for Saros in a trade too.
Ask David Poile about the pick, I’m sure Trotz would have drafted someone else.
Can we have a Steve Dangle reaction to Laine trade?
Edit: Finished the video and saw the Laine explanation. I think Steve you should still do it. Your in depth analysis is one of a kind.
So dramatic, Steve, as a sharks fan… I think Edstrom is underrated, and I do project him as a possible 300 goal scorer in this league.. Obviously, if many things go right for him. If he ends up having a successful career, yada yada yada. I didn’t play goalie, therefore I have a hard time judging goalies. I’m praying this works out for us!🎉
Thank you for the birthday content
Super! Excited!! Can’t believe this is real, figured we would have gotten out bid by CHI, or NJ, or… but to get him at that price! I figured we would probably have to give up musty at least, which still would have been worth it, but wouldn’t have been happy about it… so happy about the Sharks future. We might even be able to take advantage to the 3rd year of that Askarov contract in the playoffs!!!🤞
This is actually the worst off-season in a while but W trades
sharks are literally playing GM mode in nhl 24 lol
If youre getting traded for Hertl and askarov you cant be that bad. I like David edstrom, he is a stamina miracle and i think Nashville did well

Steve last time the Sharks traded a 1st for a goalie it was Martin Jones. They drafted 9th the year before and the pick they sent to Boston was 29th because they lost in the Cup Final after the trade. Trent Frederic was who that pick was so not bad but from thinking you are getting a lottery pick to that team losing in the Cup Final 🤦♂️.
Yes, but the last time they traded a first for anyone (read: non-goalie) it was for Erik Karlsson. In 2018 they picked 21st overall and they gave up their 2020 first which was third overall (2019 was used for the Evander Kane trade). They lost in the WCF in 2019 but 2020 they didn't even make the play-in round, and they managed to be selected to stay in their position for the third pick. Ottawa got Stutzle, not bad from thinking you're getting a late first to arguably the best player in the draft.
@@jonmendelson1104 yes they have been on both sides of the coin.
Oh I see Steve, you'll do a vid for Askarov but not for Laine...
Kudos for wearing a DIF jersey. 👍
It is hard to imagine that the Habs didn't have a better offer on the table for Askarov.
I watched ash play against the griffins in the ahl playoffs, I thought he stood on his head and totally shut down the young guns in grand rapids. For league minium I would have tried to get more for him than they did.
So does Askarov start at the SJ Barracuda?

Good trade for both teams. Huge win the the Sharks rebuild!
"Not a single tampa fan can tell you that (what those picks turned into)"... STEVE?? Cmon: the 1st we got for JT miller from vancouver went to new jersey and they picked Shakir Mukhamadullin who was sent to the sharks in the timo meier trade and the 1st round pick sent to the sharks for goodrow became 32nd overall and they picked ozzy weisblatt who was flipped to the nashville predators for prospect Egor Afanaseyev.
That being said I have no idea the full return of the jeannot trade because that isn't as fun as a tampa fan for me to look at 😂⚡️
Grier is cooking
Trotz knows what he's doing.
Was Treliving in on this??? All I kept hearing was Brad isn’t scared to make a trade but has he made one since being gm of the leafs?
Askarov's playoff struggles the past two seasons haven't impressed anyone. Maybe he gets a pass his rookie year, but Cooley stepped up and saved the day. Grosenick did the same this past season.
Djurgården got relegated a few years ago so they are not in the SHL now. That jersey is rare 😂
Nashville's return was fine.
If Ullmark, a recent Vezina winner was worth a late first, a fourth liner and a salary dump, Askarov, who requested a trade, wouldn't be worth much more.
Yes Steve, we saw the video of CJ & Adam doing a horrible job talking about the Laine trade & their zero knowledge about the state of the Montreal Canadiens.
You’re the only one with a semblance of actual hockey knowledge on this channel & you decide to talk about every trade except the biggest one of the offseason. Ridiculous way to manage your business
Do Laine!
I love Askarov to SJ for him. He wont have a good team in front of him so even if he's shaky he wont be blamed and in 3 to 4 years hopefully he will be a top 5 goalie on a cup contending team.
Preds fan here: It really feels like Askarov did the Preds dirty here by demanding the trade and forcing our hand to take less than he was worth. Then going to the Sharks and literally the next day signing a deal that we'd have been happy to give him here instead of bringing in Wedgewood as a backup. It just feels bad to get less than we should for bringing up another crazy good goalie and it feels worse to see him sign for something that we could have given him here.
Trotz did him dirty by shutting down his path to the NHL
Askorov and the sharks will end this decade (20's) with more series wins than Toronto.
Feel like the blackhawks missed on their goalie of the future here. Although im not sure of goalie prospects in their pipeline. Just thought a high end goalie prospect and a russian one is rarely a bad bet these days.
Why no Laine trade review?????
Imo, Trotz basically chose Saros and even Wedgewood over Askarov. It's mind boggling that Nashville just didn't trust him
He also lost the crease to Goose in the Calder cup playoffs the past two years
Where did the Preds pick Askarov?
11th overall 2020
Over the likes of Jarvis and Lundell
The thing is... you alwaysbloose good goalie trades. Remember van sending corey schneider to nj and everyone was shocked they got a 1st? Usually goalies are 2nds... does that make sense? Not really as they are super important but it is what it is. Did nashvillie just give up the next vasikevski? Maybe, but they got a 1st and a former 1st back so pretty darn good sort of.
Can't overlook the sin of wearing a djurgården jersey, unacceptable...
Apart from that, you are most definately selling Edstrom short, a 1st round pick on top of that is a nice return and with Chrona they got a starter for the Admirals.
It's a fairly even trade but I give the Preds the edge here.
What’s next 30 minute advertisement UA-cam so greedy
Askarov better be worth the headache because he has the attitude of Jordan Binnington. I've seen videos of his temper being displayed on ice. Trotz even mentioned indirectly it was one of the key reasons why he traded the prospect
