This reminds me of how 2 years ago this one girl was calling Lilo a brat and she was getting mad at people for rightfully hating Mertle because she was a bully. She was trying to sympathize with Mertle and stuff BRO EVERYONE HATES MERTLE BECAUSE SHE’S AN AWFUL MEAN JERK but oh apparently Lilo is an evil monster for daring to retaliate against her bully. -_- sorry I'm still salty about that whole drama
The person that said that was my abuser + is a known artist in fandom spaces who continually perpetuated hate against bipoc constantly, so let me tell you to seriously not be surprised by that person doing this.
I've noticed this same phenomenon in the Stranger Things fandom. Black people (and even non black people!) saying they don't like Billy Hargrove because he's racist and abusive, and then people coming up and trying to defend him by 1) insisting that he actually wasn't racist and just didnt like Lucas, the only black main character in the show, for no reason, and 2) saying he "deserved a redemption arc" and "it was an unfortunate situation because he had a hard childhood" BOO-F**KING-HOO so do TONS of children that doesn't mean you get to be racist. But then Lucas and his little sister Erica get to be hated to OBLIVION for minimal reasons, just because they were "annoying" and NO ONE BATS an eye, and no other characters get nearly as much hate for no reason. It's just suspicious, people are really showing their true colors.
I totally agree. It seem to me that, since J.K Rowling decided to frame Snape as a hero for commiting one sacriface after being abusive for 7 books, an awful trend in popular media (written by white people) began. If he's a white cishet character, he will be put on a pedestal for doing the bare minimum right before his death. Kylo Ren received the same (undeserved, because he was a terrible person) treatment.
I've never seen people ever blame Erica but I guess you are true. I really don't like Billy except for the sacrifice part since he was abusive and probably racist and he does represent like the ideal buff male toxic stereotype which fits in theme with the 80s/90s smth
I totally agree! I never understood why so many people loved Billy since he was horribly abusive to max and racist to Lucas. Yeah, he had a rough childhood, but that doesn’t excuse his actions at all. In the end, I feel like the only reason people defend him is because they think he’s attractive
This is how I feel about Jade from Victorious, she's awful and mean to literally everyone who breaths near her and people act like she's the best in the show cause she has some funny lines every now and there
Precisely, this is why I abhor the "Black Best Friend" trope. Their sole purpose for existing is to prop up their (usually) white best friend, yet we get no insight into their own lives and aspirations. Otis and Eric from "Sex Education" are probably one of the only exceptions to this, in that Eric receives just as much plot relevance and growth outside of his friendship with Otis.
Are you familiar with the movie "Big Trouble In Little China"? I read different analysis stuff about how Kurt Russell, while being the main character, is much more of the sidekick to the other Asians in the cast than the other way around. I sort of think that idea can be used if they wanted to play around with the BBF trope.
Still want more Alya episodes from Miraculous (but tbf I want more side character episodes in general, I just want Alya more cause she's such a significant character now [well not now now but In S4 now])
"Just because it's a good character doesn't mean you have to like them" The very fact you have to mention is stupid. Isn't something you have to learn as a writer is that not everyone will like your character? Trying to make someone like a character doesn't work most of the time, and attacking someone because they don't understand the character or smth will just make them hate the character more.Like no, i still despise Kokichi, and trying to force me to like him won't do shit.
Most of them would go on on about why our favourite characters are trash and describe everything Kokichi has done (excluding the manipulation bcz he's such a cinnamon roll 🥺😍) to tell us that our characters are inferior to Kokichi and excuse all of his actions. Most even don't get his true character being a "grey character" but describes him as the most innocent angel in fictional history and the only one important. I like his theme but many fans just ruined him for me.
I relate to this a ton; I'm not sure why we have to fully explain ourselves when we don't like fictional characters. If we don't like them, we don't like them; it can be that simple. Especially when it comes to white characters that intro hit HARD, I have dealt with teachers like Mrs. Bustier in Elementary school. Amazing video as always Captain :).
Plus they’re fictional characters, something a lot of people physically can’t grasp. They’re not real so it doesn’t matter if I like the character or not.
I hate when people think you have to explain your dislike for a character. Totally fine to ask but don’t try to pull it out of me. Honestly same with liking characters. Something else that kinda relates to it is making dumb reasons and using those against people who like the character. This is why fandoms and stuff are getting so much more toxic, people who love the characters will sometimes Harris’s and make fun of people who don’t and people who hate them will become obnoxious and well, harass people who do.
In Harley Quinn's defense, I think a lot of her popularity had more so to do with her connection to The Joker and how she escaped that toxic abusive relationship for healthy one with Poison Ivy. I think that was true "Girl Power." Sure, she's crazy and destructive but as a comicbook fan, I think she deserved her flowers.
And don’t forget the hypersexualization of Margot Robbie and the suicide squad outfit. Lots of people who like Harley Quinn now got it from Suicide squad. Which kinda irritates most comics fan.
@@BozeDoesGodsWork Truthfully Margot Robbie knew and didn't mind it cause she believed it suited Harley's character, that she be a bad bitch in any costume she wore and that costume went on to inspire a lot of her looks in the comics. I do prefer her costume in the NEW Suicide Squad movie called The Suicide Squad which was basically a redo of the first movie
That "Angry Black Girl" excerpt made my blood boil. Her education and life were jeopardized almost over night because of a drunk lunatic, and corrupt school system. I don't know her story, but I hope she got justice, and a happy ending. T_T
I'm so glad you called out the k-pop industry about their racism and culture appropriation towards the black community and the fact they just except black forgiveness meanwhile They continue to do disrespectful and offensive things to us , and then give us half ass apologizes then except us to forgive them over and over . They're not sorry for what they did , they're just sorry they got caught .
While I can’t exactly relate to the racism people face (I’m a white man), let me just say this: Nobody is obligated to like ANY character. It is 100% okay to dislike a character for whatever reason you want, and you don’t know owe anybody an explanation. That alone should suffice, but knowing that people are using this to silence POC is even worse.
Whenever there are stories that stars POC as main leads that are way more important and it's always been about their stories, people will always love white (side) characters more than the POC leads, even though those white characters may have zero character development, zero personalities, and zero significance in the POC characters' lives.
There’s definitely some racism with Pacifica’s family Like the way her father refers to dipper as “him and his kind” I know he was talking about dipper being poor, but like if Nathaniel talks like that about poor people, it’s the safe to say he’s also racist
I would love a deep dive on Teen Titans and how Robin wasn’t the best leader. Because after re-watching some episodes, I completely agree. He wasn’t a terrible leader and he clearly cared about the team but he did have a sense of superiority and was both controlling, secretive, and did not take criticism well (or get as much criticism as he deserved). Starfire liked him so didn’t call him out much, Raven didn’t seem to really care, and Beast Boy was just a goofy kid who seemed star struck by Robin (who had experience as a sidekick to Batman), but Cyborg was older, more secure in himself, and wasn’t willing to just follow Robin’s lead if he felt like he was wrong.
@@estherbalogun8092 I really hope she does this cuz the show kinda stopped calling out Robin’s less than admirable traits as time went on. Like when Beast Boy was turning into the Beast and losing control of himself, instead of trying to talk to Beast Boy and being sympathetic to what was probably a really scary and frustrating experience, all Robin did was start fights with Beast Boy and escalate the situation. He was such a bad leader in that episode and nobody really called him on it (from what I remember, it’s been a while since I watched the show).
I can’t sympathize with Bustier at all. Even if punishing Chloe would probably get Bustier fired, cuz her dad is the mayor, but she still could’ve done more to keep Chloe from traumatizing Marinette. Transfer Chloe to a different class! Hell!
I’ve seen people claim they don’t like Simone from The Good Place because she has a superiority complex. I wouldn’t call it a complex but it is understandable, and that character trait isn’t for everyone. I wasn’t necessarily mad about that But then these same people in the very next sentence talk about how Eleanor is their favorite, a White woman who is known for having the biggest superiority complex in the show. They are just so open about this Also these fans were upset that a racist, misogynist , bigoted man wasn’t considered “more good” than Simone. Clownery
I know I'm late to this, but as I'm reading your comment, I looked up the character Simone from the Good Place. I watched the show a few years ago and don't really recall her character. As I'm searching her character on Google, I stumbled upon a result from reddit and literally the post was about some user despising her character. I'm just like....🤪
Also about mean girls there is a problematic moment is the scene vietnamese girl groups confessed to each other and the english subtitles were translated their words into N-word, but in fact I saw some vietnamese youtuber point out that word means “come on/ bish please”. The anti POC-solidrity message from these white creators and streaming platforms is really shady to me
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT. I feel the exact same way about characters such as Omni-man and Homelander; both characters who have done awful things and I just hate for that. Yet I know for a fact if I voiced that opinion online they’ll be white fans who’ll try and rant on why they’re good characters or how ‘I just don’t understand their character’ like no sweetie, I get their character. And it’s shitty. Like stop trying to make me like these men who have done horrible things. I know for a fact they wouldn’t have this same energy of these characters were black or poc 🤨
@@47ratsinahoodie You would think so, but the reality is a like half of the fandom seem to love him. Even if they bring up how ruthless he is, they talk about it like he’s this ‘awesome badass’ and kind of brush off that he’s a genuine asshole
It is completely valid of you to not interact with art you know will make you feel bad. Your mental health is more important than fulfilling your viewer's wishes. Also, this video is great!
I will add that if you are talking about Dick Grayson's Robin, he is actually canonically Romani on both of his parents side. That has been a part of his character for awhile now especially in the comics. He is one of the few Robins that is ethnically non-White like Damian unlike Tim and Jason who are definitely White Robins. It's frustrating how that side of him can be ignored by DC quite a bit, but he is still canonically Romani. It actually adds an extra creepy layer around his interactions with Bruce especially when he was first adopted. But I think Dick being Romani adds an interesting nuance involving his interactions with Cyborg in Teen Titans which were still sooo shitty on his part. Also, yes on everything you said!
To fact check here, his mother is Romani. Yes, originally his father was by Devin Grayson, but it was retconned to his mother’s side because of the whole New 52 and Rebirth continuity. (Maybe his relations to the Court of Owls was a part of it? Idk.) I hate that DC ignores this too, I wish they had him talk about his heritage at least once (maybe have him regret not being as connected or remembering what his mother used to practice since he’s canonically not in tuned with Roma culture and it is a closed practice) instead of “You have your mother’s beautiful Romani smile.” To address the whole “Bruce being a creep during early Robin years,” I have to disagree on that. They were firmly Father and Son back in the early days, but only called him his ward because Bruce didn’t want to replace Dick’s parents (also it was the 60s, everything was campy and for the family). Plus, back then, he wasn’t Romani. He was white. In the early 2000s, during Devin Grayson’s run, that was retconned. The problem I have with Devin Grayson’e adding of Dick’s Roma heritage is that she did it to solely sexualize him, making Bruce say discriminatory words about his heritage for “angst points.” (She also ships them. Ew. She got her writing job at DC because she wrote a fanfic and emailed them it-it wasn’t Brudick but still implies) She even changed her last name to Grayson. I wish it’s addition included nuance like what early Marvel writers and some current Marvel writers did to Wanda and Pietro Maximoff in their comics, but alas DC can’t find anyone who can do his culture justice. I hope they do someday. It’s why not many people know he’s a POC.
One thing I don't understand is why the main animation make Damian so white Bro, i understand he being more white then her mother but why the main mídia made he so similar to Bruce
@@AnimeAngel115 in the US maybe but in European countries with a high rroma population it's a completely different talk, even when they're white passing, like they are being actively segregated and persecuted and the whole thing is completely normalized, racial profiling works differently in the USA, yeah, but that isn't a reality to majority of Rroma people who mostly live in European countries, Dick Grayson being rroma in itself comes from a racist anti-rroma stereotype (that of the free spirited travelling Rroma due to his circus background, which is literally the reason Devin Grayson thought it made sense for him to be Rromani + her fetishism of rroma men) plus the comic where Dick is confirmed to be rromani literally has Batman and Batgirl calling him racial slurs I think it's safe to say it's not exactly a thing that doesn't affect him (I hope this doesn't come off as hateful or condescending or anything of the like I really don't wanna come across as that 😭)
you’re completely right but i’d like to point out that he was white at the time this animated series came out. it wasn’t until new 52 that he was established as being romani and even when he was first established as romani (his paternal grandfather was romani), the person who did it (devin grayson😒) said she still considered him white and that it wasn’t that important to his character (very yikes😬). very recently it was established that both of his parents are romani and he is now portrayed as explicitly non-white sometimes and ambiguously non-white most of the time TLDR: he has been white until pretty recently but is now portrayed as ambiguously non-white (to clarify i think dc needs to step up and make him explicitly non-white instead of leaving it ambiguous)
@@edatheowllady9518 SO TRUE! So far we have Pacifica from Gravity Falls, Amity from TOH, Sasha from Amphibia and a silver haired girl from that show of a girl and Her ghost. Originality is Dying!
@@otakutoongamer5616 Yeah, but tbf Sasha was (apparently, haven't finished Amphibia myself yet) done well and Amity imo, wasn't really redeemed cause aside from not stopping Bump from dissecting Luz, she didn't really do anything wrong and genuinely thought Luz was a bully (but she also didn't see things from Luz's perspective so no shit she thought Luz was a bully). Andrea? No excuses for her, I think even TG&MMG fans hated that.
White characters that do wrong are always given grace but let them be brown (Or black especially) and then the hatred is amplified x10 even if they also end up redeeming themselves. Just ain’t right, I tell ya.
the amount of times i’ve seen mean white characters do the cruelest ish just to face no repercussions for their actions after they’ve changed is crazy 😭 100% agree !
Still not sorry for many comments! But I wish TT 2003 Robin was explicitly Romani and he and Cy could bond over their experiences with racism. When they whitewash Dick Grayson’s identity, they also make Cyborg the token Human of Color.
this is so true!! and really heavy on dick Grayson's identity they also whitewash Damian way too many times too when you wrote about robin and cyborg bonding over experiences of racism, I would love that too but there was a scene where star fire and cyborg did that instead, but it was just heavily implied
27:26 the idea of people expecting forgiveness from a mother who lost her son is heartbreaking. She has to live with that loss everyday. Of course she wouldn’t forgive his killer. Who would?
The part when you brought up kpop is sooo true! As someone who listens to kpop, I hate when kpop stans who are nonblack tell black kpop fans how to feel whenever a kpop star (idol) does something racist towards the black community. That’s why I completely understand why black people choose to not be apart of the kpop fandom because kpop stans are so nasty towards black kpop stans and it’s just so disgusting.
@@tpgamble depends, a lot of the time they'll code someone marginalized who was right and stuck to their deals genuinely and make them the villian. Anyone like Gaston or the rude stepmother trope or anyone terrible nah. Megamind was cool tho
@@tpgamble I think villains are another story like you love to hate them or like watching them because they’re entertaining but like if you were in the story yourself obviously you’d hate them. That’s kinda how I see it, like I like Zuko because we see his redemption arc but if I was on team Avatar it would take me a LONG time before I like or trusted him and I’d probably still have issues with him years later
Well you can like a character on screen but not want to be friends with them irl. Character's aren't, well to me, aren't meant to be likable. At least they don't have to be. Although I can only stand them for so long. Character's are meant to move the story along, be interesting and entertaining. If they meet all those criteria's I don't care how mean they are. Just because I like them AS A CHARACTER, doesn't mean I like them as a person. The problem is, when there's no boundary line between a character and a person (*cough* all those people who like male serial killers and want to be them like Joe from You). Maybe very little people can tolerant a mean character on screen because they think about the irl mean people. That's valid and that's okay. I just have a different opinion about how I view characters on screen.
I mean that's exactly what bias is. Bias influences how we view characters and no one can tell you that you're wrong for how you interpret a character unless you're straight up remixing the character's very existing canon personality and actions (for example people who try to say that Billy from ST wasn't racist when he straight up said that Max shouldn't hang out with Lucas because he was black). I don't like a lot of characters that other people like and that doesn't make me or the other people wrong and I think that there's this huge problem in fandoms with this whole idea of if I don't like this certain media therefore it is fundamentally bad instead of the idea of maybe it's just not for me. A lot of these subjects are nuanced and I like that this topic addresses that not all main characters are going to resonate with everyone. And you don't have to force someone to like your fav character because there are a lot of reasons why someone could dislike someone even in fiction and sometimes you just have to move on. But yeah there's this weird trend of white people being so bold with hating on black characters and straight up admitting to hating them just for being black. Racists are far too comfortable being openly racists and I hate it.
I really REALLY hate that they made Bonnie the token black girl in TVD and treated her like absolute garbage as an actress, even tho she carried the fucking show ENTIRELY at a point. We argued over Stelena vs Delena all day in the cafeteria, but we all agreed that Bonnie carried the show. And the author did that stupid desensitized black woman saves the day ass shit on purpose. It's ridiculous af. Why did Damon get away with literal murder but Bonnie's character was endlessly punished for existing. Bonnie was White in the books and As soon as I realized they made her black in the show I felt like they gave us a token black woman thinking it was gonna placate black people ☠️ Same problem with The Originals, and that show is just theatrical GOLD to me...has a special ass place in my heart but midway through watching it with an ex I realized exactly what I hate about the plot--WHY was Marcel EVER subservient to Klaus after all that went down??? Stockholm syndrome much? Like...😭 and the backstory just---it started rubbing me the entirely wrong way immediately. I couldn't finish rewatching it and I haven't gone back to it since. It really started to upset my mental health that something I thoroughly enjoy also has connotations of hate weaved into the plot. I wish tokenism would just not be a thing. It's why i wish black peoples would just create their own theater and production companies to bring control and structure to OUR media and OUR impact instead of trying to blackwash characters not meant to make black people feel good/respected.
Or how fans attacked Tyler(Hispanic)for trying to get revenge on Klaus after he literally MURDERED his family, and would say Tyler had anger issues but would turn around and ship klaus and Caroline.
When I started watching Invincible on Amazon, I couldn't understand why the same people who were hating on Amber for being kind of petty and self centered were praising Omni Man who is a murderous sociopath. And when I made a post on Reddit explaining all my reasons why I hate Omni Man, several people jumped to his defense.
Many people like Harley Quinn because she is an abuse survivor who became her own person independantly from the Joker. In some games like Injustice 2, she's pretty much a good guy. It's pretty reductive to declare people like her only because she's violent.
What’s funny about Teen Titans is I barely remember Robin’s Character. Raven and Starfire’s stories and episodes were so much more interesting. Edit: I can’t believe that people are expecting a Mother to forgive her child’s killer like wtf is wrong with people?
The Harley example was a bit odd because you rarely see a female villian white or POC get demonize for playing their roles. Plus there many poc villains who are popular and got praised for some of the same things. Lady Shiva, Uma, Catwoman, Blackfire to name a few. Also Satana Lopez from Glee gets praised for doing the same thing Jade West does.
I don’t think Catwoman is on the same level as Harley tho, like Catwoman isn’t really portrayed as a homicidal maniac who finds joy in killing people like Harley Quinn is. She rarely uses lethal force and when she does it’s usually for a good reason. Her biggest problem is thievery (but can you even steal wealth that was stolen to begin with) but overall I think she’s kind of a chaotic good character, especially recently. She often occupies an anti-hero role and fights for the downtrodden and for animal rights and sex workers etc. I honestly think she’s a better person than batman lol
The bojack thing is funny because it’s so clear you’re not supposed to like or root for him and some people still act obtuse about it. Like the show literally has an episode commenting that you idolize characters like Bojack and people STILL idolize him 💀 Yet those same men will always come for Diane, they aren’t even subtle
❤whenever you release a video essay, you always drops facts. FORCED black forgiveness is a topic that isn't really talked about. Thank you for posting this
27:29 Grorge Zimmerman was also a creep. He shouldn't have been following a teen around and being a vigilante when the operator on the phone told him to knock that shit off.
I'm a White dude who loved the living snot out of Teen Titans as a kid, and even then I did not like Robin. He was the only one of the titans I kinda hated. He was just such a jerk to the others and for much of the reasons you stated; he often bullied them, acted like he was always right, and was constantly breaking promises he's made with them. He was just overall not a decent human being, and as somebody with autism, seeing him get angry a lot of the time was very triggering for me.
I didn't hate him that much I just preferred everyone else like they all were more interesting plus at times Starfire had an unbearable crush on him which made me sometimes question the writing
You're right about how people of color don't have to like and don't care about mean white characters. But what if POC (like me, a Latina) don't care about white characters at all?? Depends on which white characters we personally don't give a fuck about. One example I can only think of is Life is Strange 2. Sean and Daniel are two Mexican brothers that faced a lot of racism and threats throughout their journey, but many of these white streamers on UA-cam or twitch dismisses their trauma, make fun of the social issues presented in the game like the racist characters and only care more about the white characters with less minutes of screentime, equalling zero personalities and zero character development like Brody, Finn, Cassidy, Chris Eriksen, the Reynolds (the brothers' racist grandparents), Karen (the brothers' mom) and whoever the brothers have met on the road. Many people easily forgave Karen, a white mother - who abandoned her own children and cut them off in their gameplay but had she been a woman of color, she would easily received mix reactions either sympathy or hate - because we know how double standards played when it comes to divorce mothers and fathers, but I think people will still hate her regardless if she were a Mexican mother instead of a Irish mother. People who easily forgiven her doesn't even know what it's like to have parental abandonment issues and lose a parent. I'm sorry, but I'll never forgive her at all, mainly because I have divorced parents and my dad left me when I was 11, so I know what it's like to easily not forgive your parents. And her parents Claire and Stephen (Sean and Daniel's white grandparents and Karen's parents) have always been racist towards/about Esteban (Sean and Daniel's Mexican father), and they said shit about him and his homeland Puerto Lobos even after he died from getting shot by a racist white police officer and he has every right to cut off their racist trump supporting grandparents out of their lives due to familial reasons. POC characters like Sean has every right not to forgive her, same goes for Finn, who's responsible for using a nine year old kid and his power, and being the reasons Sean lost his left eye. I'll never forgive Finn at all, and people who do are likely to because he's white and pan, and you also just invalid a boy of color's feelings. At first, I wanted to kill him off but I couldn't do it because of Daniel, who likes Finn, while Sean canonically doesn't like their friendship. They also could've made Penny, a proud pansexual black boy as Sean's love interest (and age him down to be the same age as Sean), but instead, Sean's love interest are two ugly white hippies with dreadlocks, no canon ages (they're obviously in their 20s and Sinn and Sassidy are pedophilic ships ), and you're not gonna believe how many misogyny tweets the character Cassidy get on Twitter and people love Finn way more but are willing to forgive him for the heist and using Daniel's power so quickly because he was "doing it out of genuine care" but he's actually an unhealthy love interest and manipulative person. It's obvious they're willing to forgive him because he's a white pansexual guy. There's also another white character named Jacob that the fandom thinks he could've been Sean's love interest (and age him down too) but why do they want a young adult white man who's still questioning and confused about his sexual orientation while he's still suffering from a religious trauma from his hometown, and possibly not looking forward to be in a relationship with anyone at the moment because of trauma as Sean's love interest?? Penny is right there, who's out and proud.😭💀 And many white gamers always go for the either of the two U.S. endings just to see their boring, irrelevant white side characters, not caring that they put both Mexican brothers or one of them back in the U.S. still dealing with racism, prison, police brutality, and whatever problems they have to face in the states on a everyday basis. I've always go for the Blood Brothers ending, because as a Mexican girl, I only care about Sean Daniel because they're my priority, the game has always been about their stories, no one else's and idgaf about any of the other side characters in the game.
this is the exact reason i only watched berleezy's playthrough. he defended the brothers and didn't shy away from talking about the active racism they endured.
I know exactly what you are talking about as I used to talk about it on tumblr but I was consistently told that I was making everything about race when for me the fandom doesn't value poc or at least half the fandom doesn't care about poc stories unless it is attached to a sapphic identity. If Max and Chloe were poc and weren't sapphic, shit Life Is Strange would've been left in the dust and that's really fucking disappointing. As someone who likes Karen, Sean and Daniel's mom it's important to not forget the fucking impact she had on her kids and that what she did was fucking hurtful and painful regardless, that it was a somewhat selfish choice she made and that regardless she hurt her kids and that Sean and Daniel do NOT have to forgive her for anything. I personally feel that with Finn, he made a fucked up choice that despite having bad consequences he had good and selfless intentions but even then Sean is allowed to dislike him or hold a grudge because he lost his eye because of the incident and caused more crap to happen. What he did was stupid as hell but he didn't have mean or selfish intentions but honestly it's up to you as the player whether you can find it in you to forgive him. Same with Karen, I personally forgave Karen as I couldn't hate her but if a lot of people didn't they shouldn't be shamed or criticized and we should be allowed to dislike any of these white characters for whatever reasons we want to. I do wish Penny was a romance option and I feel that the rest of the group outside of Cassidy and Finn barely got any attention but some people straight up believe that romance wasn't needed which I kind of agree with. I personally don't like Cassidy because she was set up to be the choice you should go for, the game pushes you onto her consistently to the point in which if you reject her advances or even sex from her she gets pissy and mean about things and that rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not saying Finn is any better but still found that to be gross behavior from her. What irritates me is how people weren't even excited to play for Sean and Daniel's journey, people were excited to see Max and Chloe again and as a result they got more attention than Sean and Daniel the actual protagonists of Life Is Strange 2. Not to mention, it's the fact that people can love someone like Victoria or Chloe but Daniel is too damn annoying for them? Also, I personally blame a lot of the writers and the team in general, as much as I love them their representation for poc has been very wishy-washy, their black characters are often dumbed down, mean, or drug addicts. As well the fact that they will consistently ignore their poc protagonists often in favor of the white sapphic protagonists. Like Alex Chen's love interest is getting more attention tha her, Steph imo shouldn't be getting comics, games, and more attention when Alex hasn't gotten that by herself but DontNod does what makes them money and what pleases the fans. I like them but they will ignore poc and their fans will do nothing but claim you are making everything about race when they will ignore it outright, like Alex is not just a sapphic and her being an asian-american woman should be considered rather than just her sexual identity. Also, the fans will go to bat for Chloe which she wasn't that bad but like I can understand why some people may dislike her and it completely drives me mad that Victoria and Nathan get so much attention, love, and fanart but Sean and Daniel are too boring for them. Sean and Daniel will always have a special place in my heart.
Personally as a Latino as well idc dislike white characters but what I do have a problem with is how people romanticize them and then belittle a poc character and try and pit that character against their white fav just because they can it's like a Poc character has to do twice as much to not be a "bitch" or "brat"
aww I'm so glad to see someone address this! it was always so odd to me that LIS 2 was the least favourite game for a lot of people in the LIS fandom when it had proper consequences for choices you made and a grittier, more compelling story. You perfectly explained the visceral racist attitudes that so many gamers had towards this game, to the point where a lot of white gamers were calling the police brutality 'unrealistic' and getting fragile that the game decided to 'go there' with the Border wall/immigration subtext
I’m saying this as partly Asian myself, I think the reception to Chloe, and Master Fu, is based on how the show itself frames them. Chloe is apparently supposed to be an irredeemable character that the shows creator has a hate boner for, yet she shows signs of a possible redemption arc that they just completely forget about. While Master Fu has a great character, and arc in concept, he comes off as more selfish, and he doesn’t seem to get much development either.
Don't make me tap the sign: "You are not owed forgiveness, work on yourself for you being better" Also: "If you earn forgiveness, don't expect things to be buddy-buddy, that person will let you in when they want"
Like for example in a clip of bojack horseman, bojack expects to be forgiven or apologizes with the 'expectations that the person he hospitalized will automatically forgive him because he said sorry and when the guy doesn't forgive him, he gets all shocked. You apologize with the intent to not repeat that same mistake and learn from it and improve NOT with the expectation that you will be forgiven. Forgiveness isn't like candy where you hand it out to anyone for free. There is a cost to everything, it is earned through trust.
Bonnie from Kim possible is a mean white girl (with a fake tan) who has received some sympathy from fans because she was bullied by her two older sisters (who are white ladies with fake tans). Haven't seen people try to defend Bonnie and ridicule Kim (because the show consistently shows how mean Bonnie is) yet (that aren't bonnie fanboys), but I am sure there is someone out there doing that.
@@meyeow7060 I know but you never know. Bonnie is written very similarly to some of the mean white characters that get idolized by loads of people. Maybe it is because Kim possible is white and/or because of how the show written and treated the characters, but Bonnie would have been treated similarly to sharpay and Kim Kardashian if the show premiered later or showed Bonnie a lot more often.
I don't comment often and I'm still watching this video, in fact I have a playlist of your videos and new Khadija videos to watch as well, but I would like to say, I appreciate you and absolutely love your content. You articulate several things very well, especially in regard to poc and black females. Your uploads make my day, and I just wanted to mention that. Also, I think you're gorgeous on top of being well spoken, I'm sorry about the difficult time regarding your eczema, my younger sister experiences that as well, I know it's very painful. Keep up the quality content! 👏🏾👏🏾
Speaking of the poor treatment of Cyborg in the Teen Titans cartoon, have you ever seen Batman: The Brave and the Bold? Their adaptation of Black Lightning was done very badly. The only two episodes where he has a tangible role ("Enter The Outsiders!" and "Inside the Outsiders!") consist of making him an irrationally angry black kid that has to be talked down to by Wildcat and Batman, two older white superheroes. I can't say that I've read a lot of Black Lightning comics, but the issue of "The Other History of the DC Universe" focusing on his lifestory was a great introduction to his character and makes me hate how they wrote for him in TB&TB.
another great video! i always love to hear your perspective and analysis on racist behaviors, especially things that take place in the fandom sphere, because it's a topic that doesn't get touched on enough! though, it's also interesting how the things that are done in fandom can often be a microcosm of racist things that are done by those outside of the sphere as well-- like how in this video you pointed out that white people getting upset and arguing when a person of color dislikes a mean white character is reflective of the overall expectation of black forgiveness for white people in real life that have done racist things.
Reminds me of how in AtLA and tLoK people always praised Toph for being arrogant and powerful and super funny but then turn around and shame Korra for those same exact things
You're thinking about race too much. Toph isn't liked just because she's white. She's liked because she has a more sympathetic backstory than Korra, while also being a badass regardless when people doubt her due to her blindness. Korra on the other hand, has a less intriguing backstory, and her arrogance isn't balanced as well with good-nature and humour like Toph was. I understand people can have racial biases (and that's fvcking disgusting), but not EVERYTHING is related to race. There are plenty of other factors that can affect why people like or dislike a character other than their skin.
@@meyeow7060 Korra literally opened a spirit portal, survived having more metal in her body than blood for three years, had access to three of the four elements by like, age FIVE, and tamed a polar bear dog. AND out of the last five avatars, she's the only one to have actually been an avatar to BOTH humans and spirits. Korra can back up her arrogance.
@@69Satan69 1) Toph isn't even white. Everyone in ATLA is Asian. 2) And once again- Korra was bending 3/4 elements by four or five, she literally overpowered BLOOD BENDING by sheer force of will, she brought back AIR BENDERS Korra can back up her arrogance
What people don't understand is that in the same way we have comfort characters who we can relate to (ex: I relate to Sailor Venus) or who remind us of people who had a positive impact on our lives (ex: Tamaki from Ouran reminds me of the first boy who treated me like an actual person), we have characters we dislike. I don't like Lila Rossi at ALL because she reminds me of my high school bully, a girl who lied and manipulated things to get her way. However, I wouldn't get mad if someone DID like her because at the end of the day, she's just a fictional character. Using Miraculous as an example again, I understand characters like Chloe were subject to bad writing, I also understand that some of said bad writing was VERY racist and don't expect people of color to like her. I wouldn't want someone to try to change my mind about Lila so I wouldn't change someone's mind about Chloe because it would be hypocritical of me. Fandoms are supposed to provide an escape from reality and trying to force a person to like a character who reminds them of someone who traumatized them or a character who is just downright unlikeable is wrong.
Why do white people get so defensive over problematic white characters? There’s so much representation, so much over representation. It’s not like poc where we have to stand by trash characters because they are the only rep. There are so many trashy white characters, why do you want people to love yours in particular? Why is it so personal?
You......you dont have to stand by trashy poc characters even if that are rep. And ig if I'm gonna steelman, usually when people defend those types of characters, it isn't them defending their actions but explaining WHY they do the things they do or why what they do is important for the story being told
Honorable mention: heather from tdi, ik she’s wasian but she’s racist. And ppl always blow it off as, she slays tho and carry’s the show. Yes she can be a good written character, don’t mean that I have to like her.. anyways leshawna on top
People been praising white characters for being the standards of beauty since the dawn of time and for doing the bare minimum but they spread hate to poc characters for no reason.
Existing on fandom Tumblr was always annoying because people's racism was so blatant in the way they treated POC characters vs white characters, while portraying themselves as SJW. Going from only Latin-American fan blogs to a site that was mostly populated by Americans really taught me about how different fandom culture was. Don't take me wrong, racism exists everywhere, and it was present in some of the blogs I frequented as a tween. However, when I joined Tumblr, I saw a kind of hypocrisy that was never as blatant in the Latin-American forums I originally participated in. Now that I'm older, I see white youtubers/bloggers have a nostalgia glasses when it comes to early 2010s Tumblr, completely ignoring or omitting how racist some of the fandoms/discussions were. Thus, fan spaces continue festering the same hateful treatment of POC fans and characters without an inch of self-awareness. The same bland call out culture I saw on Tumblr is alive now on twitter and Tik Tok, but far more vicious and with more doxxing involved.
Thank you SO much for this. I recently felt so guilty about being unable to watch Dead Poets Society, but something about it reminded me intensely of the racist bullying i've been through so it was totally unwatchable. All the characters looked exactly like the people who did it. It feels validating to know I'm not alone and to see someone stand up for those of us who feel this way.
In my country it's kinda the norm you can't compline about raceism because you get there's no raceism in Islam yet there isn't a day were I didn't face racism and I have no choice but to take it,a kid broke my arm once and my teacher forced us to apologize to echother in class even tho I did not worng other then being black and starting to actually make friends, and the worse part I was forced to move class rooms and teachers and all of them were racist trash bags and my class we're no better and he got to stay in my classroom and it's not even the worse thing that happend to me I was once almost branded by a bunch of white supremacists
Robin is only mean in Teen Titans, which is weird because he’s basically an over-excited little kid in everything else. I guess living with Batman must’ve rubbed off on him once he moved out lmfao
@@meyeow7060 Dick Grayson/Nightwing is usually the most positive and friendly robin of all of them tho. Whereas Damien Wayne is usually the most abrasive one (tho this has been changing recently). His characterization in Teen Titans is unlike any other depiction in the rest of Batman affiliated media
@@meyeow7060 yeah I’m aware, I was mainly thinking of older Batman stuff with Dick Grayson where he wasn’t Nightwing yet (which is most of them cause the other Robins weren’t introduced until the late 80s/early 90s)
Robin acted "mean" because even though he wanted to step out of Bruce's shadow, he still kept some of Batman's negative attributes. And it's a constant thing to remind yourself not to fall in the same pitfalls as your parents/guardians but still do so at the end of the day.
Bojack isn’t exactly a likable character and he might be considered entertaining for some people but the show portrays him as a very bad person and there are consequences in the show
Forgiveness is not for the victim its for the perpetrator. People want to be forgiven for their own conscious. Forgiveness is a commodity, its not guaranteed it is not mandatory. You are never obligated to accept an apology, whether they have changed, grown, "made it up to you" etc. Forgiveness will not heal the victim it will heal the person who did wrong
There's a reason I side eye white creators critiquing black characters. They like to always preface their critiqued with "I'm not racist just because I don't like this black character" Which is fair on surface (You don't have to like a character esp if they are written to be awful and you are allowed to critique them) HOWEVER a lot of white people don't understand their underlying biases. They'll like a white character for the same personality but when a black character has it all of a sudden that personality is crap and the black character is awful. It's frustrating that because a character has darker skin they aren't allowed to get away with nearly as much as white characters can and the entire fandom will just dog pile them.
While I at 1 point did hated Regina George when I was younger. From things like how she did spread a rumors about Janis, stole Aaron, abused Gretchen in the worst way etc. I found myself relating to her as I got older and the whole point of the movie was to show we all have a mean side because aren't just sugar spice and everything nice. Plus Regina did have some justifiable moments like who wouldn't scream at being duped on watching unhealthy things, who doesn't have a slightly possessive side (we all do don't try to act like you don't) Plus Aaron wasn't worth flunking your grade and Jason didn't deserve Gretchen. Sure Regina learned her lesson in a deleted scene but the whole point that I learned was we are all mean
In most of the MLB fandom, they would blame Alya for "pushing Marinette to Adrien/Luka" literally like she did treason or when she kicked Chat noir to defend herself from being cataclysmed to death but when Chloe does something wrong, they just blame it on "UwU her mother neglects her so that's why she's mean." She hurt so many people, put Paris in danger in this process several times (almost crashed a train), forces her only best friend to run behind her limo like a dog and trap her in a closet to do homework for who knows how long without light or maybe even food/water (slavery), treats her father like a dog, selfishly took her sister who just wanted to protect her go down with her when she was disintegrated by Style queen, almost crushed her classmates to death in that football game but she resisted an akuma, prevented Mayura from taking her miraculous and her mother doesn't like her (she apparently does now in S4 but she hates Zoe) which totally excuses all of her actions and makes her a "girlboss" while they treat Alya, Zoe and Marinette like criminals for the simplest things. This privilege applies to Adrien too but I find him tolerable than Chloe.
Alya deserves more respect among the fan base because she really holds everything together and as much as I like Chloe’s character I wish she was written out of the show in S3 because how the show treats her onwards is really gross. Thomas really needed to push his victim blaming narrative onto a character instead of just getting rid of her like most people would’ve wanted, like, Chloe hardly serves a purpose at this point and her sister only exist to replace her ( which could’ve been a really interesting idea but Zoe is so boring that it drags ). I hope something happens in the movie where she gets better or leaves
Me, who likes Chloe, Robin, and Harley: *inconspicuous whispering* But seriously tho, I get your points. I don't like those guys cause I feel forced to, I just genuinely like them for certain reasons :) but even then, my two most favorite characters right now are Raine Whispers from The Owl House, a badass, handsome yet adorable brown skinned enby, and Stolas of the Ars Goetia from Helluva Boss, an adorable owl (barn or white faced scops who knows) with trauma for days and even _then,_ I don't like them solely because they're not white. I guess my point is, I just like characters, I don't really give a shit about the color of their skin if there's nothing messed up surrounding that fact (eg this character is white because the creator is racist not because it's just a character who happens to be white).
16:59 THIS!! That's exactly how I feel about Jennifer Check from Jennifer's Body. I sympathize with what happened to her in the film but I still don't like her and how she treated Needy
Bruh you have to be one of my fav youtubers like EVER!! Every point you made was extremely valid. What you said near at 7:43 reminded me so much of a game called genshin impact. There is this character named Eula and shes from a family that owned slaves. Although she cut off her family and believes in vengeance or whatever, the way her story is told makes it seem like this weird white guilt thing. The black genshin community expressed how this made us uncomfortable and we were all bashed and gaslit. Yet there is this Black character named Xinyan (who herself harborsblack stereotypes) and she is SUCH A SWEET CHARACTER yet so many people hate her for unspecified reasons. I am honestly so happy you discussed. Im glad to know i wasnt just over thinking 😂
I really enjoyed this video and it made me think about different white mean girls I’ve seen on screen such as Cassie from Euphoria or Katherine from TVD, while their personalities are different, both characters have fanbases that love these characters, seeing this video made me realize that just because you relate to her doesn’t mean I have to like her, there are even edits praising her behavior which shouldn’t be celebrated, she shouldn’t have to change for a guy, her ex’s abusive boyfriend at that. And as for Katherine, while her backstory is sad and I can empathize with her for that. That doesn’t excuse her for stringing Damon & Stefan along, & I was just watching this video comparing Katherine & Elena, and she made a great point on how she basically assaulted Stefan by compelling him to have s*x with her, giving him no free will, and throughout the seasons she definitely comes off as the crazy ex constantly coming between Stefan & Elena, because he’s found someone else & moved on. Like the movie Not Okay for instance has an unlikeable female protagonist, the movie even throws that in the beginning as a content warning and yet people who are white become angry with those who don’t like her character and say she deserved better, which if you watched the movie, no she doesn’t her sole purpose is to be disliked.
This video hits different it really does. To this day I have beef with several white characters for this reason. Like you can have a personality outside of being mean person.
Hang in there Harriyana. Storms can last a long time, but there's one thing all storms have in common: at some point, they all end. As for your content, I love how you stand up against prejudice in all its many forms. And your knowledge of different past shows such as just jordan, jump in, and ned's declassified. Not many people remember those shows, so I was very shocked that you did. Your reviews are always thorough, deep, and entertaining. And your witty sense of humor makes it even more enjoyable. Furthermore, I'd like to suggest a possible review on Disney's Filmore, Josie & The Pussycats, & Sister Sister? (If you enjoyed/enjoy these shows enough to rewatch them)
This low key reminds me of the summer I turned pretty fandom. When I watched the summer I turned pretty, I hated Taylor. She got upset at belly for getting attention and having other friends outside of her on belly’s birthday. And then Taylor had the nerve to make out with Steven on belly’s birthday (and yes it was Steven’s fault too) but people continue to praise Taylor despite her getting mad at her poc friend having the spotlight on her freaking birthday
I’ll take it a step further and say black people don’t even need a justification for why they don’t like a character. Even if the character is an amazing ally, that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily likable to everyone. Some people are going to have personalities that they don’t like for whatever reason, even if that character is “unproblematic.” I feel like Black people are expected to justify their dislike of someone with a dissertation and a 2 hour slide show when they shouldn’t have to.
The exaggeration was very unnecessary but tbh people need to put thought and effort in their opinion if they want it to be respected, if you don't put effort into it and thought then you can't really expect other ppl to do that when you yourself don't, everybody should justify their believes and everyone should complain about bad reasoning or lack of reasoning, its bad criticism, which should be addressed.
I grew up around rich white people my entire life, I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where there was a majority of black people in the classroom I was in. One character I cannot stand is the main character from Catcher in the Rye . He was like the worst traits of my most privileged and white classmates condensed into one person. I do not understand why so many people defend his character, he has flaws that you aren’t supposed to ignore. And yet people will read it and say that he’s done nothing wrong partially because he’s white and rich. I wonder if holden was a person of color would he’s character be praised to the same degree or would be hated? It’s praised as being relatable but it only includes a small subset of (white) people in that definition. A lot the problems you discussed about film and TV is present in print media as well.
This is why I always say there is a huge different between being entitled to your opinion and peeps just having they own opinion. Like I can't stand characters like Harley Quinn or another example for issues like I'm not really into Enimen's music because the way he sounds just isn't for me. Anytime I tell someone I dislike it, they'd for some reason think I'm being racist. Like why anytime I state an opinion, I end up being called racist? Everyone has they own opinions, dislikes and likes and no one should have to make an explanation for anyone for why they don't like something. Nice video!!!
Originally Harley Quinn appeared in the Batman animated series not in the comics and from my experience with the comic she didn't become popular just because she's hot she became popular because of her personality sure to summit may seem that way but back then her main quality wasn't being hot
This reminds me of how people were shitting on Chloe Price and Rachel Amber from Life is Strange and were attacking anyone that rightfully calls out David Madsen’s abusive behavior and they keep saying that Chloe was a user and that she didn’t love Max or care about her and that Rachel was a user and that she didn’t love Chloe or care about her and they act like David was right to mistreat Chloe. It also reminds me of how people were shitting on Kenny from Telltale’s The Walking Dead and were attacking anyone that defends him and calls out Jane’s abusive behavior by saying that Kenny was a monster and that he didn’t love Clementine or cared about her.
The Kenny is worse than Jane argument is so dumb to me. Kenny is unstable and has done horrible things, I am not denying this. But he actually cared about Clementine and AJ and was willing to sacrifice a lot for them. Jane mostly saw Clementine as a replacement for her little sister. Her plan to bait the mentally ill man into violence to try to get a little girl who cares about him to kill him is just evil. Jane is awful. I don’t know how people think she’s better than Kenny
Personally I feel that people had a lot of misgony towards Jane and people consistently praise Kenny despite his flaws and anything that they'd dislike in other characters especially poc characters. Like David from The New Frontier, he was an asshole of course but I can see the similarities between him and Kenny, both always wanna have control over something and always wanna be the leader, they often treat those around them not like equals, and consistently undermine the women in their lives. I like Kenny, he's flawed fucking person but that doesn't mean I have to like how he acts towards people especially Clementine, he essentially put his mental well-being on Clementine's shoulders, she was the one who often had to take care of him, yes she called him out here and there, but as I got older I somewhat got uncomfortable with how he treated Clementine. I don't think he's worse than Jane and I don't believe Jane is worse than Kenny, honestly it's all about what you are willing to put up with or handle, personally I don't like that we brush over Kenny's racist comments and abusive behavior. They both cared about Clementine but I would say in some in unhealthy ways, I prefer Jane as Kenny has a lot of flaws that irritate me more than Jane's, but even then Kenny stans for me have always been more annoying than fucking Jane stans which are almost gone at this point. I'm not saying you can't like Kenny, I just see the man as flawed and find of fucked up, he annoyed me and irritated me with his "my way or the highway" bullshit. What irritated me even more was how people had so much hatred towards poc characters and the female characters and will consistently love and praise Kenny, Kenny and David Madsen are too similar for me and I personally don't like that. Also, people will hate characters like Tenn, Sarah, and Gabe but will gloss over Kenny's racist statement towards Lee as well as his xenophobia towards Arvo. I love Kenny because I view him as a flawed and realistic character but some of fans act like he's this good guy who can do no wrong. I personally don't like how the fandom loves to see both Kenny and Jane as a black and white rather than seeing their nuances and allowing people to like or prefer whoever, both have their problems and Kenny's shouldn't be glossed over because he was given time to be fleshed out. David Madsen is an abusive dickhead who doesn't understand boundaries at all and consistently treats Chloe and other young women like crap, he bullies them and harrassed them and people were fine with it because he saved Max once which is fucking weird. One good choice doesn't absolve you from a lifetime of shit choices, I don't like and fuck with David Madsen and he was a straight up controlling dickhead who Joyce let walk all over her and her daughter. Which is gross. Chloe didn't have great parents at all besides maybe William.
I feel people really love Chloe, not saying she doesn't get critique or hate that she's undeserving of but like people hated on Rachel for basically having a life outside of Chloe and for revolving her entire identity outside of Chloe. Rachel wasn't a perfect person, she was flawed as fuck, and it was seemingly mean that she considered leaving Chloe behind but even then she had to think about herself and what she wanted and if she would achieve her dreams on her own then she would. Rachel and Chloe most of time aren't treated as nuanced people and don't treat them as teen girls still dealing with shit, I used to be someone who hated Chloe and I used to criticize her a lot without seeing the nuance in her. I understand her more now and imo both don't deserve death or are as a bad as some people made them out to be especially when you consider the adults they were around. Like Rachel did not cheat on Chloe, they were not in a relationship and I feel that people ignore that Frank was a grown ass man like in his 30's with an obsession with a teenage fucking girl and people wanna blame Rachel when Frank was the fucking weird one. I am personally uncomfortable with the writers making a potential groomer softer or showing that he's not that bad when he's fucking obsessed with a teenage girl and likely was grooming said teenage girl. People don't like seeing women and poc as flawed people and they often have to be more likable than a cis white man who is given more grace and forgiveness than women and poc.
I just wanted to ask, why did you add Harry Potter in the thumbnail? Is it because of Cho? I really hate how her actress was treated during the making of the movies and how Cho was kind off dismissed in the books Literally she just gets forgotten because she was “too emotional”, her boyfriend died like mere months ago, ofcourse she’s going to be emotional And the fact that her name is so stereotypical proves that jk Rowling had no idea what she was doing
She also named a jewish character “Goldstien” and a black character “shacklebolt” as well if im not mistaken. Also I think theres a video when the actress who played Cho also called Jkr out
not to be rude, but robin isn't a white character, he's more of white-passing, he's actually romani which is an ethnicity that isn't really common nor has good representation in the media, ty!
When it comes to Regina George and mean girls, I like the musical more than the movie especially because there are a lot of black women and women of color who have played Regina and I fell in love with Mean Girls on Broadway than it’s movie counterpart
What happened with Birth of a Nation's release was far worse in that there was a "sequel" of sorts known as Intolerance. Intolerance was made by D.W. Griffith as a reaction to the public backlash against Birth of a Nation. As someone who has seen Intolerance (TCM aired the movie a while back) I can say that Intolerance was an over 4 hour long woe is me pity party for white people with what might have been either an all white cast or a cast of mostly white actors/actresses with next to no/ no credited Asian, Black, Latino/a/x, actors/actresses. I have yet to hear/ read anything negative regarding Intolerance. This is on top of Birth of a Nation being an inspiration for the return of the KKK and other white supremacist organizations.
Personally, I like more immoral characters in media as a character that is written well into the story, but not really as a person. In the sense that they are supposed to be a villain, even if they are considered the main character (Ex. Light from Death Note). As long as the story treats them as actual villains who get realistic consequences along the way, it's not frustrating. Though I understand completely why people would hate a character. I'd like to be interested in just analyzing them in a literary English class way from afar, but if I met them in real life, I wouldn't actually want to be friends with them. People who like a character like that in a way that they would actively support them or even talk to them if they ever existed in real life is just strange. People seem to romanticize violence, abuse, toxicity, rudeness and cruelty as "cool," "strong" or "sexy," even. Maybe it's just because I'm on the spectrum, but I've always seen things in a very direct straightforward way. If someone acts consistently nice without constantly contradicting that in action and words, then they're nice. If someone acts openly cruel, not so subtly manipulative or find a lot of pride in being an asshole, then bad actions means a bad person. I don't try to look within for a "nicer guy" inside the bad boy, or the "bad boy" inside the responsible and polite A+ kid. It doesn't matter what the intentions are. Good actions = Good person. Bad actions = Bad person. People have a mix of both, yes, but people clearly have a leaning to one or the other. Why don't people just think straightforwardly this way? I don't get it, but it's why I tend to watch cultural analysis videos of pop culture, classic literature, internet culture, or anything similar to see how this works.
Iv been saying this about rwby and some animes for years People will tell me I only like the character I mainly like over the main characters who passes white or who are white even though some of them are Asian or Asian coded and I forget that especially with shows rwby And they'll say I only like certain characters Oscar ,ozma and a few other characters of color because I like that character because they're a character I can relate to because they're a color character but that's not it sometimes when we have like main characters who are white or white passing like I said they don't always get the best writing like some of my favorite characters in Ruby they're racist side they have better writing than the main characters do and that's not the characters fault it's the writer's fault like the main key to the main plot of the story rwby isn't even the main character Ruby Rose herself is another character Oscar don't get me wrong I like Ruby she's one of my favorite characters but Oscar is more tied to the plot that I want to see and the plot that I want to actually explore More of when watching the show it just never gets brought up a lot and when it does I rather focus on the parts that I wanted to see and I wish people would get that
oh, wow! i never thought abt it like that. i always saw white mean characters on screen that i got so used to it. (it's like if it was rubbing onto me to like them :/) lol
I am glad that you have said this as I personally don't have felt isolated because I don't like characters like Jade West or hell from TD Heather I personally couldn't like her as she was totally racist towards Lashawna. It irritates me how these often white mean characters are given time to change, chances to be better, they're given empathy and understanding that often people will not afford to poc characters. I literally rarely see poc characters that are mean and morally grey given the same empathy and chances to change, it especially irritates me with white men often racist or bland white men who people will do everything in the world to convince themselves he's nuanced and flawed because he has a pretty face. For me, black characters and poc are rarely allowed to be morally grey, flawed, and allowed to be dickheads like their white faves, they will be criticized and disliked to hell. Like honestly I am tired I just want shit to be equal, I want people to stop pushing people to like mean ass characters like Jade West or Heather from TD when we should as poc be allowed to dislike them.
Oh no I hope your eczema gets better? Sorry ya gotta deal with that oof Edit: On that note I gotta disagree on the Harley Quinn bit, at least for the animated show. The entire point is that she's a villain and EVERYONE in the show is one, and the villains are the focus, as opposed to the DC heroes. Of course when it comes to comic books universe you got so many different versions and takes, and I'm sure some versions of Quinn applies to this, but it kinda feels unfair or missing the point to say people like her and let her get away with stuff because she's white when the entire show revolves around villain characters and their stories and lives. You don't have to like her, very fair, but the point is we like her AS a villain, because that is what she is, the Harley Quinn show shows her, and all the rest of the main cast, as such.
I know she’s a villain and kind of terrible but, I still enjoy reading about the character. You’re right she has varying degrees of villainy and antiheroine-ness. So it does depend on the run or show your watching.
Never liked her as a kid still don't like her now. I swear she wants to be Regina from mean girls so bad
@@edatheowllady9518 lilo and stitch came out before mean girls.
How To Train Your Dragon(2010) is better than Lilo and Stitch(2002) sorry not sorry
Mertle is the literal definition of fatherless behaviour
I don’t interact with the Stranger Things fandom. Are they really hating on Lucas and Erica? 🤦
I've never seen people ever blame Erica but I guess you are true. I really don't like Billy except for the sacrifice part since he was abusive and probably racist and he does represent like the ideal buff male toxic stereotype which fits in theme with the 80s/90s smth
I have never seen people hating on Lucas and Erica??? They do that???
I totally agree! I never understood why so many people loved Billy since he was horribly abusive to max and racist to Lucas. Yeah, he had a rough childhood, but that doesn’t excuse his actions at all. In the end, I feel like the only reason people defend him is because they think he’s attractive
This is how I feel about Jade from Victorious, she's awful and mean to literally everyone who breaths near her and people act like she's the best in the show cause she has some funny lines every now and there
I personally think jade west is one of the best characters but it your opinion

@@pancakebears probably because she’s attractive
Precisely, this is why I abhor the "Black Best Friend" trope. Their sole purpose for existing is to prop up their (usually) white best friend, yet we get no insight into their own lives and aspirations. Otis and Eric from "Sex Education" are probably one of the only exceptions to this, in that Eric receives just as much plot relevance and growth outside of his friendship with Otis.
people fail to realize that tokenism is not ok and isn't needed in our media anymore.
And part of Otis' arc is learning to appreciate and value Eric as his own person. Not a perfect pair but it was cool to watch
All of thisssss
Still want more Alya episodes from Miraculous (but tbf I want more side character episodes in general, I just want Alya more cause she's such a significant character now [well not now now but In S4 now])
"Just because it's a good character doesn't mean you have to like them"
The very fact you have to mention is stupid.
I know right Kokichi is the type of person who would stab you in the back anytime he had the chance, I can't stand him
I relate to this a ton; I'm not sure why we have to fully explain ourselves when we don't like fictional characters. If we don't like them, we don't like them; it can be that simple. Especially when it comes to white characters that intro hit HARD, I have dealt with teachers like Mrs. Bustier in Elementary school. Amazing video as always Captain :).
hi basic boi !!
Honestly when I was a kid never really liked her,it's just when I grew up apparently that I started to like her
Plus they’re fictional characters, something a lot of people physically can’t grasp.
Trueee
Kinda ironic how the relationship to the character associated with poison isn’t the toxic one
I still don't the sexualization on Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, sh knew while she was playing the role anyway.
THANK YOUUU. I’ve seen Most People always love to think us poc “hate a white character solely because their white” and it’s so annoying 🙄✋
They're telling on themselves....
People actully think that?
I'm so glad you called out the k-pop industry about their racism and culture appropriation towards the black community and the fact they just except black forgiveness meanwhile They continue to do disrespectful and offensive things to us , and then give us half ass apologizes then except us to forgive them over and over . They're not sorry for what they did , they're just sorry they got caught .
While I can’t exactly relate to the racism people face (I’m a white man), let me just say this:
Nobody is obligated to like ANY character.

I agree! Some very good points you made!

I’ve seen people claim they don’t like Simone from The Good Place because she has a superiority complex. I wouldn’t call it a complex but it is understandable, and that character trait isn’t for everyone. I wasn’t necessarily mad about that

Also, yes on everything you said!
i dont think it adds anything to his charater when hes white passing anyways
To fact check here, his mother is Romani. Yes, originally his father was by Devin Grayson, but it was retconned to his mother’s side because of the whole New 52 and Rebirth continuity. (Maybe his relations to the Court of Owls was a part of it? Idk.)
I hate that DC ignores this too, I wish they had him talk about his heritage at least once (maybe have him regret not being as connected or remembering what his mother used to practice since he’s canonically not in tuned with Roma culture and it is a closed practice) instead of “You have your mother’s beautiful Romani smile.”
To address the whole “Bruce being a creep during early Robin years,” I have to disagree on that.
One thing I don't understand is why the main animation make Damian so white
Bro, i understand he being more white then her mother but why the main mídia made he so similar to Bruce
@@AnimeAngel115 in the US maybe but in European countries with a high rroma population it's a completely different talk, even when they're white passing, like they are being actively segregated and persecuted and the whole thing is completely normalized, racial profiling works differently in the USA, yeah, but that isn't a reality to majority of Rroma people who mostly live in European countries, Dick Grayson being rroma in itself comes from a racist anti-rroma stereotype (that of the free spirited travelling Rroma due to his circus background, which is literally the reason Devin Grayson thought it made sense for him to be Rromani + her fetishism of rroma men) plus the comic where Dick is confirmed to be rromani literally has Batman and Batgirl calling him racial slurs I think it's safe to say it's not exactly a thing that doesn't affect him (I hope this doesn't come off as hateful or condescending or anything of the like I really don't wanna come across as that 😭)
you’re completely right but i’d like to point out that he was white at the time this animated series came out. it wasn’t until new 52 that he was established as being romani and even when he was first established as romani (his paternal grandfather was romani), the person who did it (devin grayson😒) said she still considered him white and that it wasn’t that important to his character (very yikes😬). very recently it was established that both of his parents are romani and he is now portrayed as explicitly non-white sometimes and ambiguously non-white most of the time
TLDR: he has been white until pretty recently but is now portrayed as ambiguously non-white
(to clarify i think dc needs to step up and make him explicitly non-white instead of leaving it ambiguous)
Its so weird when the writers try to "redeem" them even with messed uo stuff they do idk

Angelica from Rugrats was so evil but Susie would always set her straight
They gave Susie a little background which i appreciate (like that holiday episode) but unfortunately she's still a token black friend unfortunately. 😥

@@solarmoth4628 my favorite thing about robin is that he is a romani man(a brown man)much like all of the teen titans he was always a moc
As someone who's watched glee I always wonder why I go back and forth from hating and loving Santana

Okay beanie
aww I'm so glad to see someone address this! it was always so odd to me that LIS 2 was the least favourite game for a lot of people in the LIS fandom when it had proper consequences for choices you made and a grittier, more compelling story.
Cloe to me is a badly written mean rich white girl as well!!!
She is so generic to me
@@KittyKat-di6us i never understood why she's loved by the fandom

Don't make me tap the sign:
"You are not owed forgiveness, work on yourself for you being better"
Also: "If you earn forgiveness, don't expect things to be buddy-buddy, that person will let you in when they want"
Say it louder for the people in the back
Like for example in a clip of bojack horseman, bojack expects to be forgiven or apologizes with the 'expectations that the person he hospitalized will automatically forgive him because he said sorry and when the guy doesn't forgive him, he gets all shocked.
your comment made my day. deal with eczema is so hard especially when your appearance has to do with your livelihood. thank you so much.
Great video! Damn I didn’t even realize how weird Robin was to Cyborg during that argument about his leadership.
Surprised people get mad at not liking Bojack. The show never pretends he isn't kind of a trash person.
I love your thoughtful perspective on these painful topics
Finally someone said it!
That was my reaction to seeing this video
I thought it was Tim drake in teen titans.
@@medtle1 yeah the costume he wears is very similar to Tim Drake’s in the older comics so I can see that
Robin acted "mean" because even though he wanted to step out of Bruce's shadow, he still kept some of Batman's negative attributes. And it's a constant thing to remind yourself not to fall in the same pitfalls as your parents/guardians but still do so at the end of the day.
Bojack isn’t exactly a likable character and he might be considered entertaining for some people but the show portrays him as a very bad person and there are consequences in the show
i’m so glad I found your channel, this is a great video and more people need to see it
Forgiveness is not for the victim its for the perpetrator. People want to be forgiven for their own conscious. Forgiveness is a commodity, its not guaranteed it is not mandatory. You are never obligated to accept an apology, whether they have changed, grown, "made it up to you" etc. Forgiveness will not heal the victim it will heal the person who did wrong
Telenovelas also the racism is not subtle and there’s no even apology but we beg to forget about it and just forgive.
Haven’t finished the video yet but I’m commenting for the algorithm! I love your videos
We literally don't !
There's a reason I side eye white creators critiquing black characters.
They like to always preface their critiqued with "I'm not racist just because I don't like this black character"
Which is fair on surface (You don't have to like a character esp if they are written to be awful and you are allowed to critique them)
HOWEVER a lot of white people don't understand their underlying biases.
Plus Regina did have some justifiable moments like who wouldn't scream at being duped on watching unhealthy things, who doesn't have a slightly possessive side (we all do don't try to act like you don't)
Plus Aaron wasn't worth flunking your grade and Jason didn't deserve Gretchen.
ONGGGGG
Alya deserves more respect among the fan base because she really holds everything together and as much as I like Chloe’s character I wish she was written out of the show in S3 because how the show treats her onwards is really gross. Thomas really needed to push his victim blaming narrative onto a character instead of just getting rid of her like most people would’ve wanted, like, Chloe hardly serves a purpose at this point and her sister only exist to replace her ( which could’ve been a really interesting idea but Zoe is so boring that it drags ). I hope something happens in the movie where she gets better or leaves
Ikr!
Me, who likes Chloe, Robin, and Harley: *inconspicuous whispering*
But seriously tho, I get your points.
Nice video!!!
love the 'shut up and listen'
Excellent video that more fandoms need to watch and take consideration of
Thanks for the video captain!
I really hate how her actress was treated during the making of the movies and how Cho was kind off dismissed in the books
Literally she just gets forgotten because she was “too emotional”, her boyfriend died like mere months ago, ofcourse she’s going to be emotional
And the fact that her name is so stereotypical proves that jk Rowling had no idea what she was doing
She also named a jewish character “Goldstien” and a black character “shacklebolt” as well if im not mistaken. Also I think theres a video when the actress who played Cho also called Jkr out

Facts Harriyanna on the “Do your fuckin’ research!” I agree with you and like how put in instrumentals of throwback songs🥲🤘🏾!
Iv been saying this about rwby and some animes for years
People will tell me I only like the character I mainly like over the main characters who passes white or who are white even though some of them are Asian or Asian coded and I forget that especially with shows rwby
And they'll say I only like certain characters Oscar ,ozma and a few other characters of color because I like that character because they're a character I can relate to because they're a color character but that's not it sometimes when we have like main characters who are white or white passing like I said they don't always get the best writing like some of my favorite characters in Ruby they're racist side they have better writing than the main characters do and that's not the characters fault it's the writer's fault like the main key to the main plot of the story rwby isn't even the main character Ruby Rose herself is another character Oscar don't get me wrong I like Ruby she's one of my favorite characters but Oscar is more tied to the plot that I want to see and the plot that I want to actually explore More of when watching the show it just never gets brought up a lot and when it does I rather focus on the parts that I wanted to see and I wish people would get that
stranger things and mcu fandom need to hear this. cool video :D
oh, wow! i never thought abt it like that. i always saw white mean characters on screen that i got so used to it. (it's like if it was rubbing onto me to like them :/) lol
Honestly I just saw mean characters as mean characters I never associated their race with it
I am glad that you have said this as I personally don't have felt isolated because I don't like characters like Jade West or hell from TD Heather I personally couldn't like her as she was totally racist towards Lashawna.
Agree
Oh no I hope your eczema gets better? Sorry ya gotta deal with that oof
Edit: On that note I gotta disagree on the Harley Quinn bit, at least for the animated show.
