hi, so i see some of yall are upset about the poll. i put 3 shows against the proud family because i am aware that those shows had big white audiences. i know not everyone watching all 3, but knowing that many of you have seen at least one of them is why i put them there. there isn't much to choose from when it comes to black children's cartoons. the proud family is the most popular one out of them all, that's why it was stand alone. i already know white people have not seen many other black cartoons so i didn't see the point in adding more. i just went with the one that is the most well known
(btw craig of the creek is created by white people, thats why i didnt bother to add it)

      1. Shout out from South Africa! I actually thought the Blood & Water star would've been a nice Shuri in Black Panther.
      2. I actually chose to pay for Amazon because of Sela And The Spades. I didn't have it before.
      3. I have to disagree. Annabeth was WHITE in the books. Authors must learn to write minorities in their books and not let this awkward situations happen in adaptations. Rue was BLACK in Hunger Games so author was ahead of her time.
      4. CW Naomi disappointed me. Will you review it?

@@suzygirl1843 I agree with your point on writing minorities into books. One of my favorite book series, The School for Good and Evil, is getting a movie adaptation. There's one casting moment that really pissed me off, and that's when they hired a dark-skinned black girl to play a character that was written as albino, with stark white hair, white skin, and red eyes, to my recollection (since she's supposed to match the albino rats she keeps as her villainous animal sidekicks). I'm sure the actress is amazing, but really? This happened with a lot of other characters who were written as white as well. The two main characters were cast as the complete opposites of each other. Their roles really should be switched, but it's most likely too late for that.
It's just annoying, because when it comes to book-to-movie adaptations, most people want the movie to be done so it brings the book to life - not change a bunch of things from the book so the movie will be different. I will admit that there are people who are racist and just don't want black people to play white characters, and yet say nothing in the face of the reverse happening, or like what happened with Clawdine. But in this case, I think physical casting matters because appearances mean a lot in this stereotypical fairy tale setting where everyone is judged based on how they look. You can tell by how attractive the kids from The School for Good are described as compared to how unattractive or straight-up ugly the kids from The School for Evil are described as. And most of the white roles that are going to black actors are from...The School for Evil. Among other things, it just seems like an insult to hire so many black people to play originally white characters who were described as unattractive. I appreciate what they're trying to do, but maybe the author should have thought of that in the first place? You know, before he made everyone's appearances such important parts of their characters and the story itself?

I find it such a problem in the media landscape that those of the majority in any way tend to care less about the stories that represent the minority of people. They feel as if there's a berrier to entry when that simply isn't the case. People of the majority tend to gravitate towards what they think of as relatable and judge others on a barrier for entry when inevitably contributing to how the media industry continues to discriminate against minority voices.

At this point nothing will change! There will always be racist or ignorant people. Even if a actress who’s black wins a role by her natural effort, people will hate her if she is having a role of a white character. The same if we get a black female lead in a cartoon, or a black male lead. No one watches or promotes it. Only a small minority.
But white and Asian characters get hyped and pushed to the core. We are the problem and the racists. There needs to be support for original black cartoon characters that are written well, and also support for actress who are black that win leading roles in huge franchises.
Original stories in cartoons of black characters need to be popular and famous. I’m tired of having black actresses only replace characters who are white, they deserve there own stories to be celebrated too. Give them there own stories.

Speaking on the whole "people getting angry that their childhood fave is black now" from something more personal to me, April O'Neil from Rise of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We get one version of the character who's not white and still has red hair like her previous counterparts, and the grown cis men who had big crushes on the white versions when they were kids lose their minds. Rise gets a lot of hate in general, but the way some people will link one of the reasons they dislike it to the fact that one of the main characters is black now is way too common and gross. April's voice actress Kat Graham said multiple times she loved getting to play the strong and funny black girl she always wanted to see in shows when she was younger, which encapsulates what me and so many other black girls who grew up with TMNT feel about this version. So naturally she's the most hated simply because of the color of her skin, it's sick.
Also ik this is more coincidence than anything but I do find it very ironic that the most hated version of TMNT is the one with the most diverse main cast amongst the voice actors (2 of the 4 turtles are voiced by black people + April, the main female lead), and the most black-coded versions of the characters amongst the many iterations over the years. Whenever I see human au fanart for the Rise turtles they are always drawn as poc and it's usually it's Raph and Mikey as black, Leo as asian or blasian and Donnie as blasian or white but tan in terms of skin tone (though I have seen them all be black too so it's mainly up to artist interpretation). It's basically an unspoken and (from what I've seen) unanimously agreed upon rule in the fandom that the Rise boys are not white, and as someone who grew up looking at TMNT fanart I can tell you I never saw the previous iterations depicted as black by fans when shown as human, they were always white or a vauge paleness associated with whiteness

The creators themselves have two separate answers, Kevin Eastman says she was mixed like the woman she got her name and appearance from while Peter Laird always saw her as white.
Really it's up in the air and up to fan interpretation since it is a black and white comic aside from that one color image, but once she got the red hair her overall traits and ethnicity were basically set in stone for years to come. Everything else you said is spot on though!

She had straight blond hair and grey eyes, and the official art (both versions) was of a white girl. So she is a canonically white character, but the only important part of that was her being blond to combat the dumb blond stereotype. All they have to do is… dye her hair blond😭😭 But blond stereotypes are not nearly as prevalent as stereotypes/racism about black girls. Having a black girl as Annabeth will be amazing, especially because her story will have even more layers with a black girl at the face of it. Being underestimated because of appearance? Being treated badly by her stepmother for something she doesn’t control? Learning to balance emotion and logic because of the way people view her? Always expecting herself to be strong? Viewing readings as escapism and feeling like she can’t rely on anyone else??? Hello??? These will have so many more layers with a black girl representing them.

It is weird for me nowadays to be on the discussion of cartoons and stuff cuz I mostly consume music and barely watch stuff, but this discussion goes outside of cartoons because you're right. I think the biggest example i can give of how bad racism and white favoritism over the black stories is shows in the Owl House, because Dana Terrace and the everyone with power over what happens in that show really show their white favoritism. Despite Luz being the main character in her own show, she has been getting shunted aside from her personal problems by Hunter, the white angsty boy, and not only its the creators on this shit, but the fandom at large. The amount of stories I have heard and seen of racism against people that bring this up is infiruating (all the way up there with the time the Encanto fandom caused a person to commit suicide).
Y'all can literally do better by just consuming more media ANYWHERE that is centered around non-white, black casts because lemme tell you, it aint that hard unless you are the one with the bigoted mindset. I am not even black, but even when I am a Latino person on the internet, all it takes is to care. So with that out in mind, here's a good list of music by black artists that you should go check out:
-Yola and like all her music, cuz she's an amazing country singer
-Shamir because his musical development over the years has been bonkers and his latest album, "Heterosexuality" is the best album of 2022 so far. If you like your genre dish to be super freaking diverse, here's your first stop.
-McKinley Dixon, if you are fan of Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" or jazz-influxed hip hop then you should definetly check him out.
-BACKXWASH because "I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES" is the best album of 2021 and probably my favorite hip hop album period.
-Janelle Monae, cuz I'm legally obligated by myself to shout her out.
-Algiers, if you are fan of both punk and industrial inflicted soul music. Seriously the go so fucking hard.
-Asiahn, for some BEAUTIFUL sapphic RnB. Everyone can enjoy this music because she's just an incredible artist and her Orchestral version of her 2021 EP is so delightful.

In reponse to the lack of fanart for POC characters, speaking for myself: I'm a digital artist and I like drawing characters of all backgrounds. What I have noticed when sharing my art is that most people graviate to light skin/white characters. When you are trying to build an audience, especially in the art community, you have to follow the trend. My best performing character art is the Dream SMP boys, specifically Slimsicle for some reason. But when I drew Ponk, a POC SMP member, his art didn't get nearly as much attention/engagment as the other players. What I learned is that POC characters don't get that much engagment and thus many just don't share their art because there's no gain for doing so. I draw POC characters because I am a POC, but I don't always share them cause that's not what my audience is looking for. Do I post them to my Artstation? Hell yes as it shows my character range. But do I post them to TikTok or Instagram as frequently? No cause the algorithm and audience on those plateforms don't favor POC creators or characters.
I would also say that the lack of POC fanart can also be due to lack of exposure. You say to go out and find these media, but the sad fact is that most wouldn't know where to look for good quality POC media/stories. Most media that get's advertise is geared towards a white audience, where a POC is just there to add drama or "wisdom". The backlash Amber got from Amazon's Invicible was harsh, but would she had faced the same backlash if they had kept her white like in the comics? Anyone that would have drew or cosplayed as her would have dealt with some level of hate, so they just didn't. But you can find plenty of Fanart for Eve and Mark no problem.
The only recent POC fanart I can think of that was postivly accepted was Garnet from Steven Universe. We all knew that Garnet was Black coded, but many used the argument that "She's not human, she's a gem/alien so race doesn't apply to her." But to me, Garnet was a character I could look up to, both cause Garnet is my birthstone and because she reminded me of my late mother, a strong but caring black woman who put her family first. And ever since I have tried to find characters that resonate with me like she does, but they are hard to find. Just my two cents, sorry if I rambled.

Don't forget to talk about the fanfiction on Black characters that ARE actually written by non-Black authors, but have a heavy "blaccent", says the n-word alot (written "n-word"), and acts like an animal. Why is this character who lives in a post-apocalypse talking like that? They don't even do that in the show! It's to the point where I don't even read fanfiction for the (few) Black characters I see anymore.
And people DON'T like watching Black stories (unless it's sterotypical - everyone loves a slave). People will get mad when their favorite character is replaced by a black actor, ignoring the fact that the studios did that in the hopes they can get Black money without devoting actual time or money making a Black story. The studios don't even protect their Black actresses, who most times get death threats! People would rather get violent with a (usually young), Black woman, then be mad at the head of a studio (usually an old white man), who's so lazy and so money-hungry that he resorts to these "Black-washing" tactics. It's ridiculous!

There's a lot of times nowadays that I don't watch primarily black shows mainly because a lot of primarily black cast shows fall into the trap that they have to be a program that teaches white people about racism. Now I'm fine with that type of story, even I write storylines about racial issues. But it seems like if there's a black majority we must talk about how racist everything is, and it gets tiring. That's why I prefer to watch 90's and 80's black shows like, living single, fresh prince, martin, ect because they were just allowed to be black with the occasional political issue. I just don't feel like poc, but especially black people get to be that anymore. But if you need a good show with black characters I recommend Craig Of The Creak, it's really diverse, creative, and centers and black boy. I couldn't recommend it more.

I was happy for Annabeth and Grover's actors, excited to see the diversity that generally lacked in the PJO series, but also felt EXTREMELY scared for these two kids *especially* Leah because I remembered the controversy around the Little Mermaid live action casting. I also knew there was racism in the PJO fandom and white favortism.

The Kane Chronicles is an _amazing_ book series (I haven't read the final book tho I still needa find it) but very few people pay attention to it unlike how they do for Percy Jackson, a character written as white (I still like to hc book Percy as Latino tho-), or Magnus Chase, who is also white, or Apollo again white. And then Heroes of Olympus where the fandom centers around Percy, Annabeth, and Nico and plus Leo, who's Latino but written with stereotypes (I still love him tho) and maybe a comment about Reyna's strength here and there or her being shipped with Thalia (white character) who swore herself to maidenhood and then Frank and Hazel are completely forgotten while most of the Piper art I've seen is of her being shipped with Jason or Annabeth. Oh and also the eurocrentricity of Piper's, an Indigenous American person, features.
TL;DR - I saw the unfortunate racism that the PJO TV cast would face - especially Leah - from almost a mile away.

What gets me upset is that the same people that complain about making white characters black in artwork won't give that same time of day to original and established black characters and their stories created by the same people that make that artwork in the first place. Basically.
Black artist: *Makes their favorite character black for representation*
Racist: That's blackwashing, why can't y'all make your own stories?? If you can do that, why can't I whitewash black characters? This is hypocrisy!!!

The lack of diversity is more symptomatic of the source material and the fact that a third of the characters have green or grey skin color and I think the show made a considerable effort to reconcile with some of the more problematic aspects of it. I liked Bumblebee too; she didn't get the royal treatment or anything but I don't think she was treated unfairly.

I hate it when people completely misuse relatability and representation when it applies to diversity in media.
When; minorities say they would like a cast to be more diverse, when they add a character of color to a pre existing property, or when a big company puts out work with a majority poc cast- the response "i feel represented by characters I can relate to (i have seen this be said and i wanted to break my phone), this is sjw shit, why do they always have to bring politics into this, i can't relate to this character because A B C and D."
Like...nothing is stopping you from relating to ANY character, media about animals literally never get this type of conversation because nobody is an animal watching this stuff, but everyone can relate to squidward spongebob or Patrick. So why is that when pixar comes out with an movie about a 13 year old Asian canadian girl nobody remembers what it's like to be a teenager👀😤 why is it that when Disney chooses to let the race of a character not matter on the big screen it's a crime against their childhood (when the original movie still exist and is easily accessible), why is it that when we wanna call people out for black washing characters (not them saying that they're fixing anything cuz that's bad but straight up just making an interpretation of a character they like and honestly just giving inspiration to black cosplayers to just do whatever they want) the conversation is "this is bad don't do this if you want more black characters go make your own" but then don't plug independent artist or black media(that last point may or may not have been relevant to my original point👀)
BASICALLY to sum it up with this example, I love winx club, my favorite fairy is flora, i relate to Flora, TECHNICALLY i am represented by Aisha, because SHE'S the black fairy and Flora is technically the Hispanic/Latina fairy (Flora being modeled after Jennifer Lopez and Aisha being modeled after Beyonce). There is a difference and the only situations where people try to act like there is no difference is when they want to be open about being a bigot without saying it.
Thank you for reading my rant😁💖

I'm black and since I was little I wanted to see characters like me on screen. My white friends always got represented and every single time I said I want to cosplay a character they would go like "No but the character is white so you can't cosplay them". Since I watch a lot of anime that was always a problem. So I'm used to seek for characters who I can relate and not only on the personality. I'm always happy when I'm watching/reading something and there's a black character on it.
Yet, things like the cast of anabeth makes me sad and kind of... Don't wanting representativeness... If that's make sense. I mean, I saw the lord of rings fanbase go all on rage and hate bc there was two minor roles on the new amazon prime tv shows played by black people. The whole fandom was explicitly racist and there's no one saying a thing about it. So before the announcement of Leah's casting I was hoping they won't cast a black girl as Anabeth. Not bc I didn't want to see a mainstream important character as a poc, neither bc I didn't knew the importance of being represented. But I was so afraid that a 12 years old child would have to go over such hate as went with lotr.
And so she was. It didn't take a day for the so called representative fanbase of poj to take down her accounts and give hate for the actress. Thankfully she seems to be dealing fine with this, I suppose she already expected. But no one should experience things like this, specially not a little girl. And for what sake? Anyway, I wish these people could understand there's no difference on anabeth skin's color...

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR TALKING ABOUT LUZ! It's always been a shh shh topic for me because TOH fans get SUPER defensive, but her ethic representation in general is sooo badly done (coming from a white half-dominican). I can't speak about her blackness, but from my experience growing up in Latin America she doesn't look like an afro-latina, much less an afro-caribbean. For her hair I do think it could be explained by the plain racism in Dominican Republic (EVERYONE straightens their hair since curly hair is called “cabello malo”-literally “bad hair”), but they didn't include anything afro-latina looking in her design. Furthermore, the latina representation in the show is so surface level, it could be removed completely and the plot wouldn't even change. Luz wasn't created being thought of as an afro-latina character, and that is an actual fact you can look up. And it is such a shame

I'm back after watching the full video.
I still love Luz's design. She looks just like my younger sister. But also I think you might have over looked the fact that black is not a universal type of person. Luz is closer to me than she is to my younger sister in terms of who is as a character. My black experience is not the same as yours and vice versa. Your criticisms of Luz design and actions are both valid and reasonable. However, from my point of view Luz is perfect the way she is and doesn't need to "be fixed."
On a side note on this topic about character design for black characters. I don't have most black features and I'm a black man. It is entirely possible for a person like Luz to exist. The implications of saying her design is "lackluster" to your standards of blackness can cause the argument of the slippery slope fallacy. Just because her design is the way it is that doesn't mean she's not black enough. Thus my point in this, can you not say that someone isn't black enough in terms of designs?

I didn't think Luz was afro latina, I did assume latina bc of my own experience in cartoons.
Tan, lighter brown skin always translated to Hispanic for me, and Hispanics can have straight hair, but mostly I see wavy or curly hair.
Her hair is short, but at that length, many of my family would have some curls.
My children are Hispanic on one side and black on the other, and they do have straight hair if its close to their head (haven't seen it since they were babies), but if it was a long as Luz's (her hair seems to jaw-length), there would be curls at the top and bottom, unless its done to be like that.
What's funny is that all their hair is different. Their hair is kinda straighter when wet and detangle process, but curls up as it dries.
It would be nest to see that amount of detail in animation for Luz. And I think that's good criticism bc without that detail its ambiguous what her ethnicity is bc of the nature of abstract art styles. You can maybe argue she's anything that isn't pale white, but my experience and name made me think Hispanic naturally lol.
