Much of what 291 is known for is their use of Aspen staves. The Aspen trees in Colorado are famous and you will never find a more amazing display of color than watching the Aspens change in the fall.
Great review. Glad you got a chance to try the Catoctin Creek. Their distillery is less than an hours drive from me. I particularly enjoy their barrel proof offerings. If I can’t find their products at our ABC here in VA, I just drive to theie place. They give a nice tour too of their facility as it’s not a huge spot. I’ll also keep an eye out for the others you reviewed.
I have multiple bottles of both Milam & Greene and 291. The M&G Rye is really fantastic. And 291 is putting out bangers left and right! Been to the distillery multiple times. They are good people!
I got to meet Marlene Holmes at a Milan & Greene tasting at Benash a couple months back. I have a signed bottle from her as well. I was a big fan of the rye and very small batch. But that rye finished in maple syrup barrels sounds like a winner all day. Cheers Judge
Some great reviews today! I've never had 291 so will have to check them out sometime. As for Milam & Greene, all I've had of theirs is their Unabridged Vol.1 which is fantastic stuff. Catoctin Creek is an interesting one. It's a tasty rye, but very expensive, especially for only being 2 years old (plus finishing time)! That maple syrup finished rye is at least $90 in DC and released at some places for $100. I have a bunch of their older single barrel finished releases which I got for cheaper than the current rates. The one I definitely recommend checking out is their Hickory Syrup finish.
Catoctin Creek was my first ever rye. They have some great options - I have owned the Distiller's Edition and I currently am drinking their Stout Cask. I've tried a bunch of their specialised options at a local tasting with the Founders/Chief Distiller, the Harris family (who, by the way, are lovely - if you can go to their Distillery, I think you'd enjoy talking to them). 291 also has a great owner/distiller. He's a hoot and very good at selling his whiskey.
I have tried most of the 291s and have been to the distillery for a tasting. I was underwhelmed by the bourbon at those elevated price points but the ryes blew me away. I was introduced to 291 by a bartender who gave me a sample of the barrel proof to try after I tasted a MacAllan Edition No. 2. The aspen staves give the whiskey a taste that makes one feel like he is standing in a dense aspen grove with the smells and sounds and dankness of wet leaves and bark. It is one of the best whiskeys I have ever tasted and always make sure to have a bottle on hand.
Nice reviews Judge. Been seeing more and more of Milam and Greene, but did not know much about them. Also do not know much about 291 and Cactocin Creek. Glad you are reviewing.
Have heard good things about the M&G and how good their bourbon is. Haven’t heard anything about the 291 but certainly would get it if I see it. And the last one being a rye I’m all over that. I enjoy all bourbon whiskey and rye’s are very good. Currently drinking the KC 7 rye and it’s fantastic. Great review and thanks for sharing these newer brands!! Enjoy!!
Nice review. It is always nice to support those craft distillories. I have been enjoying Milan & Greene for some time now. I think you should check out Saints Alley out of Waco Texas and The Prideful Goat. Both producing some great whiskey. Also, don't forget ASW out of Georgia and Widow Jane out of New York. These are some delicious whiskeys.

I need to get there one day soon.

Been drinking M & G for a year now. Just stumbled across them and enjoyed their juice. It's another one of those underrated bottles.

I heard that she was there. I missed it myself. Sounds like it was an excellent event.

I think the 291 finish with aspen
Thanks for the heads up on Milam & Greene Judge! Been walking past that bottle for a while but will pick one up now.
Cheers Ben

I've seen that 291 in my area, definitely going to try it, Cheers 🍻
On second thought it's $135 at kroger definitely rethinking this bottle. Do you think it's worth $135
Great reviews! I’m interested in Milan and Green. Especially since it doesn’t take like Garrison Brothers lol
😂

Great reviews Judge. I’ll have to keep my eyes open. They all sound amazing.
Thanks Robert
Judge I would love to send you some samples of a few whiskeys that I have. The JT Meleck Cask Strength made from rice.
As a Texan your way of pronouncing making me chuckle
Lol
I have a bottle of 291 barrel proof. I really don't care for it at all.
