In the last days of steam on the Southern some drivers would unofficially whip the Bulleids up to 100mph on certain sections. We used to wait at the Moreton level crossing between Dorchester and Wool and the memory of sensation as they sped pass will never leave me. Not sure of the speed but certainly in excess of 80mph.
Well, that sure got my shovelling muscles twitching! (I had nine lovely years (1954 to '63) working on steam locomotives out of Kings Cross)
Lovely engine, will be watching from the platform at Gomshall for the first Belmond British Pullman of the year tomorrow!
Frigging awesome footage 👍
"THE SPEED!" by Jeremy Clarkson
WOW THAT'S AN AWESOME VIDEO
Fantastic to watch. A steam locomotive doing its thing....
What a machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant!!!
2018...any guess at the date...?
How fast is that
Based on the frames per wheel rotation, driver wheel diameter, and frames per second of the footage I calculate a cool 70mph
Capable of a lot more than 70mph but limited to 75mph
