I had my Ammo in military Ammo Cans that stayed underwater for 47 days after Hurricane Katrina. All 9 Cans were dry, not a drop of water in any of them.

Ammonia as in cleaners etc.it is absolutely awful to brass. If brass is exposed to any ammonia it will penetrate through the brass and chemically weaken it. When I worked in the propane industry I found out that some dealers had been using liquid dish soap with a small amount of ammonia in it to find leaks on brass tank valves and line fittings. Ka-boom! I am sure ammo would be compromised as well. If you live on a dairy farm background ammonia levels can be very high so ammo would definitely have to be in ammo cans. Thanks for the tip I am going to get some dry dry packs. I put them with some of my camera and sensitive electronics ad well. I thought you could renew the it but that was a good tip. I was given some old pistol powder from a friend that was dealing with terminal cancer. He was in the military and retired from the police department, so I felt that he knew how to store ammo. I was given two square metal cans of Bullseye powder with a metal pop up sealable cap with a paper gasket. He dated everything, even the powder cans with a 1966 date. I thought for sure the powder was bad but at least I had two retro cans!. I gave it the smell test, smelled fresh so I loaded up some test rounds, they all shot good with the proper recoil and were grouping very well. I just finished the last of the powder, I'm not going to store this ammo but I'm having a good time shooting it up!

I stored my ammo cans of 7.62 x39 loose but i took the time to stack the rounds like shotgun shells one facing one way the next the other i got 1250 rounds of 7.62x39 in one 50 cal can , very heavy but not much room for air

No dont just stack it because you can. If you have hundreds of rounds for every gun you have, you should probably give us new gun owners a break. In any case of fighting tyranny, itd sure be nice if all us were armed to fight back. I can not find a reasonably prices gun and surely not ammo. Everyone should have at least a handgun and a couple magazines worth AT LEAST
@@Sheridantank here's the thing buddy most of us old gun owners are also new gun owners who need for more ammo. Also with limits it hard to get any substantial gains. Stay persistent and make friends with the gun store employees. Maybe bring them some doughnuts or something to butter them up a bit. Sometimes you can get the delivery schedule. Then just swing by on truck days. Stay persistent. Stay motivated. We will persist together.

If you're "stacking" your supplies you're probably not new and or probably have enough of them. I'm not talking about new gun owners buying ammo for their first guns. I'm talking about people with 10 ARs, shotguns, and handguns of all calibers and hundreds of rounds for each. If you're at that point, you should probably give it a break for a moment and let others buy.
$30 is good in my area. People want 40-50. I won’t do 40. I just got 10 boxes of 9mm for 32.50 per box out the door
Possession is critical right now. If the worst comes, it will be much more difficult for the government to take your property. That is why stocking up isn’t a bad idea to certain degree. Ammo that is lacquered and sealed is the best way to go if you can’t re-load. Also, most folks don’t realize polymer magazines are meant to be disposable. Invest in quality aluminum STANAG mags and parts to repair them.
I’ve recently got back into guns because of everything. I used to buy ammo a lot back in 2010-2012, and I never properly stored my ammo. I just went to the range last week, and everything seemed to be fine. I must have been lucky. 3000 plus 9mm and 1000 each plus of 223 and 556.. these ammo were all bought from Walmart back in the days.
I agree it is usually fine even in other than ideal conditions. But like the couple examples I showed in this video....not always. With how much it is currently worth, I'm paying a lot more attention to how I store it nowadays.
Bobby Herr Thats cool. It will prob be fine. but the better you store it, the longer it will last. And lessen the chances of something stupid happening to it.
That is good advice leaving it in the box for the next person your family or your loved ones whatever if it's in the box they know what it is if it's loose they don't know how it's stored what it is it's not near as good loose in a can as it is in the box stored properly any of us don't know if we'll be alive tomorrow I would like to think that whatever I have can be used by someone else if I was to leave this world today!
Hell, years ago I bought 250 rounds of corrosive 30.06 for next to nothing, headstamp says 1942. Haven’t had a misfire yet. Just stored it heel to toe in a 30cal ammo can.
Airlines allow 11 pounds of ammunition per Gauge or caliber in original box. Still check before you fly.
MTM is my favorite brand for the plastic ones. They sometimes go for under $10 online for the 50cal cans.

If you loose pack ammo in a can, fold one of the boxes flat and throw it in the box along with your dessicant.
I've been vacuum sealing my ammo in there original boxes since 2010 and putting them in both polymer and metal ammo cans. I use a food saver with food saver bags. Never a problem. If I have loose ammo, I double bag them. I tested vacuum sealing a rifle. Gun socked it after a good cleaning them vacuum sealed it. Four years later, still holding the seal.

Yep. Good info. I use that exact dessicant bought in bulk, cheap on Amazon. Grab a can of Ballistol while you're at it. Use it on the seals of those cans. Not only will it work perfect for them, but it's an excellent gun cleaner, lube, and protectant. It will even neutralize the dreaded corrosive primer residue from surplus rounds.
I live on the east coast and I keep my ammo inside an ammo can inside my gun safe. Inside the safe I have a dehumidifier that you have to plug in about once a month to recharge. Dry and cool is the key.

A light coat of silicon based lube on the seals keeps them soft and they don't stick to the metal sides. I store it at 74 degrees in my home. My reloading shop is also at the same temp. Excellent video. I know there are some shooters that will get real use from the video. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Found a nice one at the pawn shop for 5 bucks the other day took it home cleaned it up and oiled it the seal was still mint metal cans are great.

I use Stack-On gun cabinets for ammo and some firearms. For the price they work very well for me. Put them in the closets and bolt them in.

I’ve dumped the metal ammo cans and replaced them with Igloo coolers, they are air tight and will hold about 12 ammo cans worth of ammo. My cans cost $8-12 ea. One igloo cooler was $18. I sold most of the cans and only use them to transport when I’m going to shoot
If you aren't moving it around that is an ok idea. I wouldn't even try to pick that up and move it....lol
@@2aEdu LOL, no way am I moving it and neither is anyone else. I’m an ok, competitive shooter and have always had a minimum reserve of 15,000 rounds of 9mm range ammo and 2000 rounds of competition ammo. It makes sense to keep the ammo in the original factory box Incase I have issues with a certain lot, which has happened. I for most people who don’t shoot a lot ammo cans are the way to go.

@@9770G Walmart sells a Igloo 48 qt. Laguna Ice Chest Cooler for $25 which is smaller and more expensive than what I paid. Thanks Braindead Joe! Timing is everything, I bought mine before Covid was created. I sure as hell would not spend $200 for any cooler!
Usually I load up all my .50&.30 cal cans then w/dessicant packets. Once those are filled, move to plastic storage containers w/dessicant packets too. Not worried about all my 7N6 spam cans, they are still sealed. But now that I've stockpiled a good amount over the years, it's literally stashed everywhere, gun cabinets, gun lockers, closets, etc(no basements). I've gotten real lazy too and just store in the boxes they come in. But at least I'm comfortable enough to admit(which no one really ever admits to) I have what I need to last me a good long while.

My local Runnings store has metal ammo cans, olive green (looks like military surplus but new), rubber seal and a desiccant packet inside for between $13-$20. They look awesome and you can stack em!

I know some people for long term storage they use gloves when handling rounds but you don’t need to if you leave it in the package
I just got a kit from Temu for $4 and change that is a lock stud kit. It requires a drill to install but it works great.
You are right about where you live.A good friend went hunting in South Dakota and he went in a gun store.He saw a lot of ammo and even some real hard to find 300 WSM down here in TX.He asked how much could he buy.Man said the depends on how deep your pockets are..Long story short..there was no limit and no short supply

nice job but I can tell you this much my dad had 12ga and 22 in the Garage for a long time if i had to say about 40 years and it still shouts and still good so its a 50/50 that it my may not work
What I did was ziploc ammo (quart freezer double zipper) depending how much you put in a 50 cal can I do 8 ziploc freezer bags of 100 rds of 223 each 800 rds a can put a dry pac in each one then add another 2 dry packs in the can and boom done. Boxes hold moisture

No, I don't plan on knowing what it is in X time when I go back into that box. That's why I cut one of the boxes and tuck it up under the handle (between the ears) so I can see what it is.
I also writ in sharpie how many rounds are put in the box. If I take any out, I cross that out and write the new total.
Some people know what it is. Some forget. Sounds like you have a good plan. If you have sell it, it is still worth more in the boxes. So like I was saying......there is always a trade off.
I use ammo cans for remanufactured ammo and put the tag from the box to ID where I got it. I bag them in 50rd zip locks. I put boxes in ammo cans too. I have the MTM flat boxes with o-ring that hold 20 shotgun boxes.
My parents have a beach house in Galveston Texas and it’s insane how fast everything down there rusts

I have some 9mm that I've done in 100 and 200 rounds and used a vacuum sealer with and o2 absorber and those are stored in the ground in PVC sealed 4inc pipe with an extra knife food socks first aid kit and extra mags along with a 9mm G2C.
Marvelously educational video about sound storage practices. Now I know a good way to store toilet paper is to place it in a 50 cal ammo can and throw a 5 g packet of silica gel in there. Humidity is bad for toilet paper. You can lose hundreds of dollars of toilet paper if detergent gets into it. More if you count the shipping and taxes.

I use the 50cal ammo boxes with rubber seals on stripper clips and in banndalers 840 rounds per can. And 2 can in each wooden crate with fold out secure clips that when open will break down the wooden crate!
Did my annual check and my crate of 762 got wet I opened it all the boxes were dry but the bag of rice I had inside was the color of a rainbow. It did stop all the moisture no rust or any damage to the ammo.
Good idea to check on it. Keep that ammo nice, because it is expensive nowadays!

Just got 2 of these with lock and ordered some silica x200, even though I have been saving silica from everything that comes with it. I have all different size (used) silica packets in my plastic ammo can. Cant wait for the metal tanks to come in. Amazon is a love/hate relationship. Hope you got your piece of the pie, always wondered if I actually had to add to cart after using your link or if I could just fill the cart then click your link and order. I have been lazy and done this a few times.
In SE TX, hot and humid, well, except a couple of weeks ago. All ammo stored in closets in the house, in ammo cans, and with desiccants inside.

Keep in mind that the Plano brand type ammo cans that you see at sporting good stores, do not all have gaskets. Some of their models do, but most do not. So make sure you look when you buy those.

It gets humid where I live in the summer. I have an old childhood rifle that i clean before and after each summer. More just run an old rag on it. Just to keep it like new.
But the idea is great. Run a reference to an old video. And pop the ammo crate open. Maybe do one to fail on purpose.

Most of my ammo is between 6-10 years old.The first few years they were stored on a shelf in my bedroom closet, after that they were transferred to metal ammo cans with more silica gel packs than I really need (2-3 50 gram packs per can). Recently I moved all my ammo to the basement on a shelf I bought specifically for the purpose of storing ammo (it'll hold 4500 lbs). All my ammo still looks as new and fresh as the day I bought it.
I have left some of my magazines loaded for years without rotating out the old for new. All of it has fired without issue, but they were a little discolored.
All of those Silicone packets I threw away .. I should have put them in a small air tight container and saved them until I got some metal Military ammo cans..
I have like 3 military ammo cans I use at tool boxes..

Yeah, and if they are the paper packet type, you can recharge them in the oven on low or microwave like I was talking about. They are a great little bit of cheap insurance for ammo storage. Thats for sure.
I put my ammo in little baggies so I know how much off the bat with a couple 1g silicone packs, rip a side of the ammo box, and put that in the bag so I know what it is… put those bags in an ammo can with a couple more silicone packs
I recommend the Harbor Freight cans if you can get them for $10 and under. They have held up well for me so far, and better than the Walmart cans 4 sure! Gotta keep that ammo in tip-top shape, especially nowadays! Also, I buy the Dry & Dry as well, but I buy them in crystal form and put them in coffee filters with zip ties to keep them sealed. It all works great!
Nothing beats real surplus ammo cans, do not trust the look a like cans sold at sporting goods stores. I have some that are over 60 years old and still working great.
I agree. A good condition surplus is the gold standard.
You can save your Silica packets from other stuff. Put them in the oven at 220 for an hour or so and re-use them. I have some really old ammo that still fires. I have some 303 British Surplus from 1943 that still fires. I have some 22's that I bought as far back as 1991. I broke out a brick of them the other day. It said $7.99 on the price tag :( They all still fired.
Yep. good idea. I have some old ammo that shoots great too. And unfortunately some that does not. I remember when .22 was a penny a round. It sucks to even think about it....lol
Rural King sells 50 cal cans also, best price I've seen so far. I buy what I can afford, mil grade they can keep.
I have three that I picked up from a buddy for 5 bucks. I use 1 for my 35mm camera and accessories and 1 i use for my computer tools.
I use the dollar tree moisture absorbers in all my stockpile and gun cabinets, they last about 6 months and that isn't bad for a buck each. I also use the ammo cans from Harbor freight, mostly the smaller plastic ones because they are easier to grab and carry if SHTF.

Cool deal! That's exactly how I store mine too. Ammo in the original box put into a genuine military 50 cal, metal ammo can. Then, I've been putting my ammo cans in a medium to large plastic tub you can buy at Lowes' or Home Depot. I'm gonna buy those 5g packets I did learn that watching this though. Great idea, thanks.

I use plastic and metal with silica in them, Most my main rifle ammo is in mags in the boxes have been for over a decade now, i check em every once in a while but holding up just fine, great info and video man ! I rusted a ton of 762x39 back in the day storing incorrectly! Haha and man i hope your right about ammo coming down, eventually , Damn. I been thru this ammo sh!t 3 diff times now, Irs ridicoulous how it can even happen, Further gun control should not be a legal option, Shall not be infringed. No compromise we already deal with enough infringement as it is!

This is probably the best ammo storage video I've seen. Overall your information is accurate and well founded, right down to the use of silicone grease and warning not to use petroleum based products on your ammo can gaskets. Same with the all-important use of desiccant packs.
The only thing I disagree with is the use of plastic/polymer ammo cans. Most are flexible and have thin gaskets with very little surface area, and there's plenty of evidence to show you can't rely on them to be airtight. Quite honestly, I would take your coffee jar suggestion over them.
Also, I never store my ammo loose. Yes they take up more space in boxes or plastic ammo containers, but I can date each box box and use the older stuff up first. There's certainly nothing wrong with storing it loose, but it's just not for me.
I have about 15 calibers/gauges and with little exception have thousands of rounds of each, so keeping it well managed is pretty important.

I always use repack kits to keep my 556 ammo on their stripper clips, cardboards, bandoliers and the thing that allows the stripper clips to be quickly loaded into the mags. I also add a few desiccant packs as well.

I broke open a spam can of 7.62×39 from 1951 a couple months ago still looks brand new and haven't had a single round not go off or act odd. Its corrosive but after running it just run clean water down the bore and gas block then clean it like normal when you get home.
I have one I have never opened.
Windex works well to clean after shooting corrosive ammo

Blue crystal cat litter is sold loose in 3.5 to 15 lb bags for about 15 bucks. It's pure silica gel. Ive used it for a while. i just sprinkle a couple tablespoons into the top of whatever container and let it settle into the voids. it also changes color depending on saturation level, and has never failed me so far for my " loosely" stored ammo. I also use a Dazey Seal-A-Meal and and semi-vacuum seal my ammo into 50 rd bricks with a few grains of desiccant just in case.

I personally vaccum seal in the box and put it in ammo cans.
Poly cans re lighter but steel cans will probably last a lifetime. I have both. Big "Tupperware " style boxes seal tight and work well too. Pretty much any container that seals air tight will work. For very long term I would put some extra sealer around the rubber gasket on an ammo can. Use you imagination.

I've got some 7.62x51 from the 60s that shoots great. I've also got some from the 80's that is very unreliable. The 80s stuff was free, because it hasn't been stored properly. I'm pulling the bullets and using the brass. I'll keep the bullets too, just incase I ever get desperate enough to reload using those. Not that I'll have primers for that at this rate....
Mineral based oils will break down rubber but using silicone oil works wonders since it soaks into the rubber and makes it swell a bit ensuring a better seal and preventing any cracking or rot. Silicone grease works good too but it wont absorb into the rubber as well. Also unless ur keeping the can closed for years straight(not opening it at all) the silica gel will eventually get spent and will stop obsorbing moisture if you open the can even like once a month so an indicating/rechargable silica gel pack will do you wonders. I usually hit the range as much as twice a week at most or 1-2 times per month at the least and i noticed the silica gel will be pretty much completely spent from just opening and closing the can indoors(humidity usually around 50%) after only a month or 2. Also if you notice your can isnt sealing properly silicone gasket paste works wonders. Oh and for 5.56 get some milspec stripper clips, makes loading mags super quick and very easy in a stressful situation
Also after 2 years ammo is still relatively expensive "cheap" m193 ball is like 45 cpr after shipping and tax, sometimes down to 42cpr after tax and shipping but pretty rare. I cry everytime i need to buy ammo ;(
Light soft wire brush to get rid of the surface rust and run it. Let your friends shoot it.

I like using the ZCORR anti corrosion bags for really long term storage. They make them to fit .50 and .30 cal cans.
Ammo prices are so high I have no problem storing my ammo. 15 rounds are stored in each of my 7 magazines. No need for a safe for ammo storage. 🤣
I would never take it out of the box to store it unless I was going to vacuum seal it in mylar bag. And then I would still store it in a larger box or even an ammo box. Put one of the boxes folded flat in the container and do not mix ammo.

i bought a military surplus a PA-120 40mm grenade ammo can i love it i can hold 5 20round military surplus mags standing side by side 12 30 round surplus mags a 40 round pro mag laying in between them with 250 rounds in the box and i stiil have room. you can get it from Sportsman's Guide

my empty ammo cans are holding my ammo
50cal ammo box. A few Smaller. Filled with the Brown Bag Desicant packs from when I was working in Mortar fuse work. Best bet EVEN dad has a Big Box store safe and A bunch of them and Everything has Been gold.. don't Touch ammo if it's for long term.. oil on skin

I have 7.62x54R ammo from 1945 that was still in the Spam can. Shoots like new ammo. Just have to deal with the corrosive primers.

I cut the box tops from the 150 & 200 round bulk packs and put them in with the ammo it has the lot number and what it is
