- On September 4, 2020 at 0616 hours NFD units were dispatched to 154 S. 6th Street for report of a house fire. While responding the dispatcher advised they were receiving additional calls reporting a working fire.
This house was located in an old section of town where houses are built behind other houses making access to it somewhat difficult.
The following equipment was on the initial assignment:
Battalion-1 with a crew of 1 (Me)
Rescue-1 (engine/rescue) with a crew of 4
Tower-1 (105 ft platform) with a crew of 4
Ladder-3 (100 ft ladder) with a crew of 4
Medic-3 with a crew of 2
Engine-52 (Heath FD) with a crew of 2
Engine-2 and Medic-2 were tied up at an auto accident when this fire was dispatched.
The working fire announcement brought an additional 2 engines and 1 medic
Rescue-51 (Heath FD-engine/rescue) with a crew of 3
Rescue-201 (Granville FD) with a crew of 4
Medic-201 (Granville FD) with a crew of 3
Upon arrival a 360 of the building revealed the home was a duplex with 1 apartment upstairs and 1 apartment downstairs. Both were vacant and in the process of being remodeled. There was fire showing on Delta side from the ground extending to the roof line with extension into the second floor. The initial attack crew had to enter the rear door to gain access to the 2nd floor apartment. A total of 3 handlines were utilized to extinguish the fire.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries at this fire.
This video was recorded with a Motorola Z Force Droid cell phone, which limits the length of each video to about 30 minutes. The PIP Helmet Cam footage was recorded with a Fire Cam 1080.

I go to work for a 24 hour shift and when I come home I notice that all of the experts and keyboard warriors have been hard at work. I'm blocking people left and right. Goodness, where is the Christmas spirit?
Why are you blocking people? Dislike comments then shut them off folks have different opinions

10:01 Chief: "i have no visible fire at this time"
10:05 Fire(in Rip Taylor's voice): "Hel-LOOOO!!!!" lol.
Merry Christmas Chief! Prayers for you, your family and department are all safe and healthy and have a great holiday season! Thanks for all your hard work!
That response was a thing of beauty. Clear comms, clear assignments, crews safety aware, no wasted effort. It's good to see professionals working effectively.
Well said. Agree wholeheartedly.
I'm always amazed at the calmness. Just another day at the office for these guys.
Agreed
I’ve never heard how firefighters are organized during a fire so it’s really interesting to hear and see everything take place. Thanks for all that you do!
Good posting. Means good command leadership
Another good training video for departments to learn from. No drama, no chaos, very well organized and well executed tactics. Good to see well-trained departments at work.
Even the occasional hiccup in comms and individual actions, but no panic.
Thank you chief for allowing us to be on scene with you all. Stay safe sir
Jeeze. Going for a promotion?? If I can get all this sticky sweet stuff off of me I can move to the next video.
@@mro4440 LMAO
Great video as always Chief! I would love to see more of the picture in picture with the helmet cam during the 360. Really gives us a good idea of what you are seeing during your size-up.
David Decker I'm curious. I've learned a lot of things fire buffing while following comms, and one thing I've learned is the more water you can put on a fire the better the result. So the question is why if you have a tower ladder available would you not use it's elevated master stream to k/d the fire? This is of course knowing that the dwelling is unoccupied.
This house was located in an narrow alley. Getting a ladder truck in position would have difficult at best. Additionally, we had to get to the second floor to search as we did not know if the second floor was occupied.
@@commandvisionfire Thank you for the information. I thought it was known before going in that both were vacant so that does explain a lot, and yes if the alley was the only real access I can see it being very difficult to position a tower ladder.
I have been watching for awhile and this may be a stupid question but what is Par when you ask for it. I am assuming it is making sure everyone is accounted for, but looking for clarification
Correct. PAR = Personnel Accountability Report. It confirms that each crew has all team members.
I'm watching from the uk love theses videos thanks and merry Christmas
You do such a good job. What kind of helmet cam do you use?
Thank you
Chief I am in process for becoming a professional firefighter thank for your service
Chief Decker, great videos !! Your calm, clear, polite and well spoken approach is an asset to your department. You should be proud ! I do have one question for you.....what do you mean when you asked all units if they had "par" ?
He is asking for a Personnel Accountability Report just making sure all are accounted for.
Well done Newark FD. Good thoughtful attack and rapidly out!
Looking forward to it!!
Dave your guys done a quick knock down that is great to see
Wow, this is fascinating. Respect for the upload.
We’re you able to determine the cause of the fire?
I still don't understand why the engineer isn't charging the line immediately after going on scene
It is much easier and quicker to pull a dry line into position and then charge it when ready.
We have four worthless irresponsible chiefs in our local department. I would work for Chief Decker in a heart beat.
Enjoyed listening to you run command Chief I actually took some keys from listening!
Thanks to all who serve. Nice job all 👊🏼 🚒
When the man showed up I laughed so hard 🤣
What does a typical day look like at work for you as a chief
I like how the extra what looks like Driver/ Engineers put up green cones under the power line. Without being told by command
We have policy to mark electrical hazards with green cones.
I like that idea I have seen it on construction sites makes perfect sense for fire ground as well 👍

I have to agree
13:56 That there is a good solid door. I need to get one of those! lol
Yep.
Nice job as always. Please consider a 360 walkaround video after the fire is extinquished. Will give us a better perspective of the scene.
I never gave that a thought. That would be easy to do. Especially after the sun had come up.
I remember waking up to this about 5:30/6am and watching the newark department go to work battling the blaze from a backyard. Good job getting the fire under control. You guys do an amazing job, keep it up 💛
Thanks.
You're welcome chief
Good camera angle on this one, giving the opportunity to see several operations. I liked the helmet cam on your 360.
It's not as bad as some videos where the PASS alarms are constantly going off, nonstop! Drives me nuts!
Thanks. Sometimes I can park in a good location and sometimes it just doesn't work out.
@@ericpl7227 That is pet-peeve of mine too. I think that can make the fireground dangerous when firefighters don't pay attention to PASS alarms.
@@commandvisionfire Merry Christmas Dave. I hope you get to spend some quiet time at home with the family.
@@alaninnh Thanks. Merry Christmas to you.
For what it's worth, if you go to street view for this property, you'll see the electric meters on the house where the fire started.
My first thought too - but in the video, the female witness says she saw men start the fire.
(But now that I think of it - could have been a copper theft attempt gone awry.)
Just want to say that you guys do an amazing job and that I truly appreciate you for all that you do. You are all heroes. Thank you!! GREAT JOB
Conmand definitely had it organized, he wasn’t loud he was calm giving assignments, and furthermore the job got done! Salute my fire fighter brothers from battalion chief!!
Chief Decker & Crew Awesome Job.Chief The Split Screen with the Helmet Cam & Dash Cam was a great pov, hope we can see more of that. Keep up the great work & stay safe. 5****" I'm out of popcorn 🍿 already lol
Just curious was there any fire in the Dumpster? In video Looks like it's next to the dumpster.
Looks like fire started outside. Dumpster outside the house indicating renovations. I was suspecting arson before the lady said what she said.
Did they find out what caused it. I see the electric feed is in the back wonder if it was electrical in nature. You and your crew do a great job keeping Newark safe, stay safe from Corona and unsafe structures Merry Christmas to you and your crew from Jackson county Ohio
Chief Decker you and your department do a wonderful job under extreme conditions to keep us all informed, and we thank you. Unfortunately some people on here don't show respect towards others and need to be blocked. I know you and most of the serious viewers watching welcome good open discussions without hearing unwarranted statements. As a former line officer and firefighter I really enjoy the professionalism and dedication you and your department bring to each and every video.
Good control from start to finish. Very professional, and a great use of resources. I appreciate the ability to use your incidents for training. It is invaluable to those of us who do not see the volume of other departments. Stay safe.
Congratulations on 32k subscribers, Chief. Be safe out there.
Thanks.
Another great video Chief! I’m not a firefighter but to me you provide the clearest guidance for your teams and they respond better, faster and more professionally than any others that I’ve seen in videos. You are without a doubt very experienced and knowledgeable and obviously train your firefighters very well. Your community must feel very safe. Well done!
Thanks.
As usual, good job chief. I’ve seen others that could learn much for you. As an old smokeater, I appreciate how you control your operations and how good a job you do on commas.
What I found interesting was that it got lighter outside during this fire. Many of these videos are in the dead of night, or start at dusk and get darker.
At the start of the video it said call received at 0616 which is 6:16am. I heard a ladies voice tell command she saw people around the duplex with torches then later saw the fire. Very suspicious.
Not that I want you to have more fires, but I do miss learning from your vids. Rest assure that was not a door from Lowe’s on the Alfa side.
Question for those watching, when the chief calls each unit for PAR, what exactly does that mean? Great teamwork for all! Please stay safe out there!
PAR stands for Personnel Accountability Report - they are asking each unit if all of their guys are accounted for.
Does your department do a debrief, critique, or some kind of lessens learned after an incident? If not, it might be a good way to go over what went well and what didn't. (Like the roof team stealing the egress ladder for division 2).
I love it that lady telling you i seen people with flashlights over there and then i saw fire yeah for us arson guys again another great command video Dave
Chief thank you for your service and for providing us with these videos.
God bless you and your men
A job well done Chief your men got there and did a good job on getting the fire out quick and safely,
Hope that you and your family and all of your firefighters and their families have a very Merry Christmas
Hi Chief, we’re you seeing anything particular during your 360 that made you order your 1st line to the interior and had the 2nd line pulled to knockdown the exterior fire? Thanks for providing these uploads!
Can't wait, always love to see your videos chief
Great command and control of resources. Department appears to have good teamwork - got the job done efficiently. My one observation and comment is the ground ladder on Side A. Good initial placement for Division 2 egress in emergency, then roof crew moved it to access the roof’ and then never replaced it. Should never move a ladder placed for emergency egress while crews are in the building. Ladder company should have placed another ladder for roof access.
Thanks for another great video Chief. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!
As a retired firefighter, I am so proud of these guy's. "What an outstanding job". Everyone has their act together , the community and the department should be so ever proud.
Because of the internet, these videos are excellent learning tool for millions on how the job is really done as opposed to Hollywood's version. ,
I'm loving the helmet cam! Question for you Chief. When you have ordinary citizens come up to you vehicle window, and start a random conversation that you notice has nothing of major importance to the current situation, how important is it, and how are you able to get them to essentially leave you alone to properly conduct your job?
I understand how this my sound harsh, but I'm meaning for this to be a completely serious question.
That is a very legit question. I usually say something like "let me get back with you". I want my full attention on the scene and the radio. But on more that one occasion I have rolled up the window and locked the door on people that just don't get the hint. Sometimes it makes people mad, but my priority is the scene and the firefighters inside the hazard zone.
A crane operator at work has a “Do Not Disturb” sign on his door...you should get one made.
Another perfectly executed and managed scene. Great job NFD!
I was holding my breath as I watched two firemen on that bowed ladder with no ground support. I've seen two firemen fall with broken backs and other injuries, so I'm really sensitive about ladder usage.
I hope those ladders are a bit sturdier than the ones you buy at home depot, especially with the angle they laid it at. I was always taught to stand with the base of the ladder at your feet, and extend your arm forward and you should be able to grab a rung with out leaning or bending your elbow, then you know its the right angle.
@@Jarl_Thidrandi No one does that arm rung fire 1 and 2 crap, try rescuing someone and trying to go down a ladder with that steep of an angle. They do it at that angle so its much easier to bring a victim down. As for why they did it for climbing the roof, your guess is as good as mine
First off the foot of the ladder is definitely in the grass/dirt thus dug in. The ladders firefighters use are some of the strongest out there and the rungs are overlapped adequately and I see nothing wrong with the angle. This was perfect example of ladder ops with out the truck ie main ladders.
I will say that they should have put on the air (radio) that the 2nd floor access on the A (Alpha) side via ladder was gone and moved for roof ops.
BR549 watching it I was a bit concerned too, but then my viewing “angle” wasn’t very clear-maybe even a little deceiving. However, my eyes thought I saw some twist toward the right side, and then when I saw more than one person on it, I thought it might give way. I believe it was more illusion for me as these guys are good at what they do (that doesn’t mean pros don’t make mistakes) and were on their game. Still...made me hold breath too...😉
Another great video of a great job done. I see people questioning how the initial attack was handled BUT only you did the initial 360. The helmet cam didn't catch all your observations, so..... Glad everyone is safe. Happy Holidays to all y'all in Ohio from us here in Western New York State!!
Favourite benchmarks
1:04 - Upgrade
1:26 - Size Up! / Found it!
2:09 - Out for 360! It’s a worker
14:17 - Neighbours waking up wondering what the noises are this early in the morning look outside to a house on fire.
29:53 - Agent applied on the hot spots. Careful nearly got the chiefs car wet that would have been funny.
My only question is when the chief updated with fire on second floor and roof why didn’t the first engine drop a supply line then instead of waiting for the second engine to do it. What if the second engine was delayed. You have ppl inside without a water supply.
Everybody does things a little bit different. Our trucks have 750 gallons of water, and we have a pretty strong automatic aid policy. It is rare that the first truck would lay in. I'm not saying that I'm right or that you are wrong.
13:57 6 heavy blows, and it's still closed... DANG, I want one of those doors!
I heard that activity before I saw them, and I thought "Lord, I hope he tried turning the door knob first!"
Carry some c4 and detcord on the fire trucks. Good for breaching 😂
I hear you knockin' but you can't come in!
Hey Chief, is there a reason the first line didn't do an initial knockdown on the exterior CD corner?
I believe it was the first line, due to where the power line was attached to the house that was a dangerous route to run the line and work on the knock down.
Good question. I struggled with the initial line hitting the fire on the CD corner first. I had Ladder-1 pulling a second line to hit that fire but the line was a little delayed getting charged. So my top priority was to get a line to the second floor apartment to stop the spread of fire and try to get a quick search for occupants. You or I wouldn't be wrong to hit the exterior fire first and knock it down. I was thinking I could accomplish both simultaneously with two lines. I hope that makes sense.
@@commandvisionfire a delayed line, trouble with water supply, structure full of junk, ya never know and it never goes exactly as planed. Good call and good explanation. Woulda went the same way myself.
For the people that's criticizing, how long have yall worked for the UA-cam Fire Department🤔🤔🤣🤣
Chief, recommend having meetings with mayor. Requesting check on ALL MAINS IN YOUR LOCAL
Having never really seen a fire department respond to a structure, I wonder how long do you hang out after the "apparent" fire is extinguished? I imagine certain situations smoke for hours and even days but what is the criteria for heading out?
I respect you guy's, but why taking so long to put water on the fire, in the Netherlands we have the first attack line straight away when they arrive....
Maybe its the different between the country's?
Great camera position with a view of a lot of action. Good call moving those guys out from under the electric lines. Eagle eye on the scene. :-)
He even called out the impingement on the wires when he got on scene... must be those guys didn't hear it....
Excellent job by all. Clear instructions, crews working effectively and effective. I plan on sharing with my department as a great training opportunity.
I do have a question for you.
What kind of command board or aids are you using to be so organized and on top of the scene?
Thank you for your service.
There's one way to start your morning at 6:35am
what that lady said makes it sound like Arson...."people with flashlights at night around the house"....sounds a little fishy doesn't it chief
What dose he mean when he is asking the crews if they have par?
PAR is personnel accountability report. It confirms that all crews are together and they have their people And nobody is missing.
@@commandvisionfire TY for the explanation, I was wondering the same thing
Please keep these coming. I use them to learn. Thank you, and stay safe.
Great job. I am a firefighter in Wisconsin. Love your style of command!
Terrific job chief. Very organized scene.
Hey, Chief, I think I've seen that guy in white that you chased off at 8:25 in several of your videos.
Very good job of scene controlled fire extinguishment. The only observation that I have an issue with is when, at approximately 12:30 minutes, the ventilation crew removed the ladder from the second story window and used it for roof access. In my opinion, another ladder should have been used. Otherwise, a very well run fire scene.
I agree. The roof team should always bring their own ladders.
Seems like it took a long time to put any water on the fire. Why dont you put water on the fire from the outside when you first arrived?
I have watched alot of these videos... This DEPT has their shit together... Chief very good at directing different units.. GREAT JOB NEWARK
Chief, you directed Ladder 3 to bring extension ladders to the alley and proceed to the roof to make an inspection hole. The video shows a crew taking the egress ladder from the Alpha side and re-purposing it for their ascent to the roof. Was there a mix-up?
I saw that too. Took their egress point away
This may sound strange. what are the green cones for? I hope nobody was hurt and that everyone got out, God bless firefighters,
We use green traffic cones to mark electrical hazards such as a powerline down. And no injuries at this fire.
Excellent response Chief Decker! You really knocked that sucker down quick very impressed! Bless you all! Stay safe out there
This chief is probably one of the best in the country. He’s very good. I subscribe and watch every single video. F-ing love it.
Good to see the BOSS being looked after, got to keep hydrated.
Great job chief as usual. Give em a little more forcible entry training. Just an observation, not a criticism,
Thanks. I have to say the doors on this house were not what you normally see. They were rock solid doors with the deadbolt set deep into the 2x4.
That is how a fire should be dealt with. Good job Newark F. D.
I am a training officer and using your videos tonight for recruit training. Its so valuable to have resources like this available.
I’m shocked that you’re ladder safety is poor in the us I rarely see a ladder footed by anyone, and two fire fighters up the same ladder with it not secured?

We did. Looks like about 5 inches. School is cancelled today. I've always said if it's going to be cold it might as well snow.

@@commandvisionfire 5 inches.... baaaaah that's just a dusting lol ( canadian lad here lol) good job on knock down
@@protectoroffaith same here in NH we actually don't have snow on the ground yet!
Wondering why no blitz on the outside to knock down the bulk of the fire? The length of time it is allowed to free burn until interior crew gets to it is excessive. It would reduce spread to the interior. Just my opinion, after 35 years of experience. Excellent work of command and communications!
I was wondering that myself. Appeared to have 2 lines at the same time. Why not knock down visible fire as the interior line is gaining access?

Hey chief you ever thought about making a video on how you became a chief?
I could probably do that. I'm not sure how many people would be interested, but I might give that a go.
Very interested.👍
Hey chief! Love your videos! You guys in Newark are doing great. Don’t know if you’ve seen it, how do you feel about the Milwaukee method for vertical ventilation on a peak roof? It appears that maybe you operate your ladder companies with a crew of 3. I think you guys would greatly benefit from using this method. The only thing I noticed was the ladder crew removing the division 2 egress ladder to use for venting. Other than that, great job! Keep it up!
We don't regularly go to the roof on an ordinary private dwelling. Usually it is easier to take some glass for horizontal ventilation, but yes the Milwaukee cut is very effective. And you are correct, usually 3 on our engines and ladders. 4 if we are lucky.
I am curious if the ladders you use have a heavier rating than the ladders you get at lowes or home depot which usually have a 250-300 lb rating.
Yes. The ladders that we use have a duty rating of 750 pounds at a 75 degree angle. They are tested annually. The requires that the ladders be fully extended and placed horizontally with a 750 pound load placed on them.
