    Thanks for the video you have saved me a lot of work. Been colorgrading for a few years now, been filming with a Parrot Anafi drone, Go Pro hero 5 & 7 so used their p-log. Up graded from a Cannon 700d so the whole P1-to 10 and all their sub folders came as a shock. I will use 7 with S-log 2 which from just looking at gives you that great base to work with. The S-log 7 from some experiments filming with proper exposure, if your prepared to put the work in can give you some great images. I use Hit Film Express but bought all the color grading and enjoy applying it. I am still making mistakes but when you get it right it really gives you that pro touch

    If I just want to shoot in, for example PP4 "ungraded", If I just set it there, does it stay there even when the camera is turned off and then I later turn it on again? Will all movies I shoot afterwards be in PP4 until I go into the menu again nd change it?
    Also: On Auto, I went out in an slight overcast afternoon and made some video and all my greens were too bright and unrealistic. Will PP4 tone this down, maybe darken the greens some but maybe leave the sky a nice blue?
    In your vid, it was in a studio, what about outdoors?
    Thanks!

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  2 роки тому

      Yes, the camera will remember the picture profile setting.
      I haven't used PP4 much, other than this video. For accurate natural colours to use out of camera, I choose PP1. If I want to color grade in post Slog2.

    Very helpful video, thank you! How would you choose between cine2 and hlg/hlg3? I want to do mostly talking head videos indoors with controlled lighting like you, but not sure which one to go for. Which do you prefer and why? Thanks Roger!

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  3 роки тому +2

      I prefer HLG (HLG2 seems to strike a nice balance for me) or Slog2 because I can use Resolve's Color Management with them and work in Arri LogC color space. Currently with the a6400 I use exclusively Slog2/Sgamut unless I'm testing stuff.
      In the end it is a matter of taste, both on the results and on working method.

      @@RogerinFinland All good, thanks Roger! In this video at 6:13, it looks like the Cine2 is more sharper than all the other gamuts (do you see it? i.e. you can see more of your pores and wrinkles on your forehead with Cine2. Is this because you added sharpening for Cine2, or there's a reason why Cine2 is sharper (I have seen this in other comparison videos as well). It looked like it had a smoother highlight rolloff than HLG2 and SLOG2 as well. What do you think?
      Also, for your 'graded' SLOG2 footage here, did you use the Arri color space conversion method (like you showed in your other video), or just manually graded? (I assume the latter as it doesn't look as nice!) Thanks!

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  3 роки тому

      I used all the Picture Profiles with their default settings, and it might as well be that Cine2 does have some extra sharpening at the "0" setting compared to other profiles where you'd have to crank that up somewhere. And since you made me look at my wrinkles (geez, I'm getting old) I'll say that I do prefer the less sharpened look of Slog than Cine2. And I do make a distinction between sharp and sharpened if you know what I mean.
      The grades were done with CST for Slog and HLG, but very very quickly. Even so, I do prefer the look of it, especially the skin tones where I found Cine2 to have some orange and yellow blotching.
      And about the highlight rolloff, you might be right and I will 100% blame here too fast turnaround and effort. I still prefer the Slog2 look, and having worked with it (and tried to grade Cine2), there's more room to operate and better chances to get what you want from it than with Cine2.
      And that is the biggest takeaway: with Slog (and log profiles in general) there is more room to work and get what you want/need. With other profiles, if you nail the look you want you're golden, but if not there's much less of what you can do in post to make it look different without the image breaking apart and starting to do funky stuff.

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  2 роки тому

      It was some time ago, but I mostly shoot with PP7 (Slog2/Sgamut), and then the usual for me: 4k, 25p, lens wide open, 1/50s and ISO likely at minimum (500) and adjust the light to expose for that 👍🏻

    • @RogerinFinland

      The safest way is restore factory settings.
      Otherwise PP7 is Slog2 and Sgamut, and most stuff at 0 or in the middle.

    This was very helpful, thank you! As I understood, Logs 7-8-9 are equally good for editing in post, and the PP10 is the best, or are 6-10 all about the same in quality, and just depend on preference?

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  Рік тому +2

      It vastly depends on preference for sure.
      PP7 is Slog2, less dynamic range than Slog3 (PP8 and 9) but more forgiving with 8 bit. Since Davinci Resolve 18 also supported by ACES.
      PP8 and PP9 is Slog3 with different color gamut (Sgamut3 and Sgamut3.Cine). It gives the most dynamic range but challenging in 8bits. I'd use it only if you use a color managed workflow (either RCM or ACES).
      PP10 is HLG with Rec.2020. People like it because it looks flat enough and with manual tweaks good enough. I'd still use it with RCM. However the main use of HLG and the larger color space is for HDR output.
      Myself I have no device with an HDR display, so I quite haven't used it much.
      I hope this helps 👍🏼😊

    How do I reduce the noise once I set my camera to slog2 ?

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  2 роки тому +1

      One thing is to overexpose by about 1.5 stops, so that you need to pull down when grading.
      The other thing is that Slog2/3 aren't quite great at low light scenes as they are designed to retain highlight detail.
      And finally, noise reduction in post.

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  Рік тому +1

      Hmmm, good question. Slog2/3 are good at preserving highlights, so not the best choice.
      I'd give HLG a try, and if that doesn't work for you, I'm a fan of PP1. You need to expose well and precisely for the final image, but might work.
      Actually I'd probably go for PP1, slightly overexposed and then in post just pull the exposure a bit down to take some noise away.
      And with everything I said, test and choose something completely different if that works for you 😅

      I don't have the a6500, so I'm not sure. With the a6400 and using ACES I find it definitely worth using.
      I don't think there's a "better" picture profile. My preferences are: using ACES, Slog3; using RCM Slog2; HLG2 with RCM is OK, but I prefer Slog2/3. The rest of profiles I never use, but there's people that swear by them.
      Testing by yourself is the best way to find out what works for you though.

      Not sure I understand what you mean. There's no such thing as "best settings" it depends on a ton of factors.
      If you are asking about the fine tuning of the picture profile itself I Keep everything at zero (or the middle). If I want a softer image I might turn down the detail, but that's a matter of taste anyway.

  • @Mrav79
    @Mrav79 2 роки тому +2

    Wow, shows how much recovery you can do with not the best exposed material with those higher gamma profiles, anything below PP7 to me seems to fall apart there, while PP8 and PP9 seem best to me.

    • @RogerinFinland
      @RogerinFinland  2 роки тому

      That's a bit the point of the baked-in profiles.
      They can look good, but they need to be exposed perfectly.
