I heard about this else where. In theory it makes sense when you think about it. I’m gonna try it. So interesting, it’s opposite of what log style profiles preach. However, with 8 bit we are talking about something different here. If some one makes a video of trying to prove this theory to us, that would rock.

Recording externally will automatically solve like 85% of the issues people face while grading 8bit log footage. I'm assuming you anyways use your atomos to record prores 4:2:2 which is a much more forgiving codec compared to the shitty 100mbps h.264 codec, which is pretty much unusable for scenes that actually require s-log 2 DR.

As I said in the video - it does, if you expose correctly, but in general the dynamic range at night isn’t that big and important and you’ll be okay with using something like Movie Color and Movie Gamma if you’re afraid of messing up the exposure in Slog2

I understand the dynamic range is great with S-Log2. But the shadows can hardly be used because of the low bitrate. So you have to expose to the right and never use the recorded shadows wich costs some of the 256 steps. But not overexpose too much because of the lacking tonal precision of 8bit and often the bad sensor dynamic range. Which costs another part of the 256 steps. All in all there is less usable dynamic range and more noise than with a linear profile like Cine2, right?

    • @NOlimitsON

Not exactly) I found slog2 to be the best in terms of color reproduction and usable dynamic range on 8-bit camera. Yes, it takes some skills and effort to film and process it correctly, but it works very good when you nail it
